The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I think I've suffered the bounce/plateau.

Two weeks ago dropped from 11st 5lbs to 10:13 in a week. Then bounced back to 11.5, then 11.3 and stuck for a week now on 11.2.

Have been doing 30 day shred, 10000 steps and rowing plus 2 fasts. Grrh.

Feel slimmer and want to avoid the scales.

Overall down from 12st 8lb at end of January.

Prawntoast · 10/05/2013 07:41

Well done on all the losses! Lost just over 3/4lb this week, very pleased as ate out a lot over the bank holiday weekend. ELR you are the same weight at me, I'm looking forward to the 9's,haven't seen them in a very long time. Reckon another 2 weeks should get there for me.

Badvoc · 10/05/2013 07:42

I am back on the 5:2 bandwagon today!
I lost a stone last year and then due to family upheaval/illness etc I fell off the wagon...
I would like to lose another stone.
Today I am planning scrambled eggs later for brunch (300)
Then cup a soup for mid afternoon (90)
Then an apple (80)
I reckon that comes in at 500 cals.

akarucker · 10/05/2013 07:46

Smile saf

postmanpatscat · 10/05/2013 08:06

Morning all :)

Well done losers Grin

saf hope you're feeling better soon.

mttum · 10/05/2013 08:08

Good idea about the pampering melanie, thanks. I was brought up to associate treats with food. I can even remember my mum buying sweets for me as a reward for being brave while having a filling at the dentist!! Definitely some reprogramming needed...

silverbeetle · 10/05/2013 08:10

Morning all, some really inspirational losses reported- massive well done to all.

Second fast of the week for me yesterday, and it was a hard one. Felt really cold all day, haven't felt like that for ages and found myself clock watching waiting for 8pm dinnertime. However it was worth it, jumped on the scales this morning..... 9st 13.8lb!!! I can't quite believe I'm in the 9s, I know it's only marginal and I'll probably bounce up a bit before Monday (official weigh-in day) but it really is very motivating Grin. Last time I saw this weight I was in my teens, so nearly 30 years ago.
Did have a quick body check afterwards just in case a body part had dropped off in the night, but no, all present and correct - lol.
Now decided to reset my goal to 9st 7lb, can't quite believe I am typing this as I had convinced myself over the last few years that my middle age spread was just part of getting older and there was nothing I could do about it. How nice to be wrong.

Since starting this WOL, DH has also lost over a stone and DS has lost 8lb, they don't fast like me but I think it's due to cutting down on portion size, being aware of what you eat and not buying so much crap. It's been a real education to us all.

swallowedAfly · 10/05/2013 08:17

thanks Smile

treats are a great idea. i went for a hot stones massage last friday and i'm off for a swedish one this afternoon. now my mind is going ooh i wonder if that helped with the weight loss by getting my lymphatic system working.

BetsyBell · 10/05/2013 08:26

Whoop! Well done silverbeetle and all the other losers! I had a happy jump on the scales this morning too - less than half a pound from seeing a 9 Shock. It'll take me ages to actually get there and stay there but it is tantalisingly close and will definitely happen Smile.

Measured up too - in 3 months I've lost 2.5 inches off waist, 1 inch off hips, 1.5 inches off each thigh, 1 inch off each arm. Very happy with that.

For those not seeing the scale results they want, take measurements and record them on MFP so you can look at the nice downwards graphs after a few weeks.

Now to go and ruin it all with a weekend of eating (Friday's the weekend right?) Grin

postmanpatscat · 10/05/2013 08:27

silverbeetle well done on your loss :) I'm 45, at goal weight, BMI

EagleRiderDirk · 10/05/2013 08:49

FD today. DS got up on the wrong side of the cot this morning, and is already down for a nap. Found DD in bed sans nappy, thankfully hadn't peed but was trying to put her nappy onto favourite toy. Toy now in wash and DD very upset. I feel this is going to be a very long one...

Is it ok to just do 500 calories of Wine on FD Wink

Americano · 10/05/2013 08:51

Well done to all losers!

Have to admit feeling a little jealous as I still seem to be on an upward bounce. 2 pounds up from Tuesday, and 3 in total up from Saturday- which was a new low. And I fasted Monday and yesterday. Urgh knew I shouldn't have weighed today as any gains make me grumpy and more likely to sabotage. Still 3 pounds down on when I began 3 weeks ago. A NFD today so just have to concentrate on not going overboard.

Please please do let me know that these bounces do even out and turn into losses though.

mehefin · 10/05/2013 08:53

Hi peplum I am comfortable in a 14 now so a bit to go before I need a 12 but I don't want to annoy the boss by asking for new uniform too often !
Hope all is well with you

Good to hear so many positive experiences

saf While I was on holiday from work (just stayed at home) I went with the flow as far as fasting went as I knew I was mentally exhausted
No loss during that time but I ate a whole lot less than I would have a few months ago and as I said when I went back to work my trousers wouldn't stay up!

Emilythornesbff · 10/05/2013 09:05

Fasting today and I'm feeling ok. So far.

Dotty342kids · 10/05/2013 09:39

ELR and Betsy - nearly in the 9's! That's amazing! Ooh, so exciting, and will be brilliant when you get there.
And to Silverbeetle, congratulations!
I had my second fast of the week yesterday and this morning scales were showing 10st 11, which is my lowest to date. Fully expecting a bounce by Monday morning but would dearly love it to stay in the 10's. May do a mini fast on Sunday eg. nothing till teatime and then a healthy (eg. not too many roasties!) roast chicken dinner.
Good luck to all fasting today and have a lovely weekend of eating to the rest of us Smile

INeedThatForkOff · 10/05/2013 09:52

It's really inspiring to read all these successes Smile Well done 5:2ers!

And now for my next question ... (bear with me, I'm trying to be really prepared for starting on Monday)

I noticed early in the previous thread some comments about cutting out sugar for a while to deal with cravings. Is this a common approach while doing the 5:2? virginposter also referred to more obscure sugars. What kinds of foods would I need to avoid?

Flowers for continued help.

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 10/05/2013 09:57

Oh dear. Woke up this morning after my first fast day yesterday and I'm weak and shaky! Maybe I didn't consume enough calories yesterday (460). I'm ebf an almost 6 month old so maybe I need more for milk production? Has anyone else felt like this after a fast day?

BetsyBell · 10/05/2013 10:00

ForkOff That was me doing the sugar thing - I get addicted and it affects my mood if I eat sugary stuff every day and then my brain craves more and more so I try and curb it by quitting once in a while. If eating sugary things is not an issue for you then don't worry about it.

I find that fast days help keep it under control as I avoid anything highly calorific as I like to be able to eat as much as possible for my 500 calories so stick to veggies/salad and some lean proteins (egg, fish). I think I'd been on holiday so had a week off 5:2 plus eating sugar everyday so I was well hooked at that point. Now I'm fine with it, can have the odd sweet thing some days without getting the addictive behaviour but would happily drop it for a bit again if need be.

Hope that helps.

BetsyBell · 10/05/2013 10:02

theonlyway if you're ebf then you should look to be having 600 to 700 calories on a fast day perhaps? Perhaps emily has some tips for you?

wonderingagain · 10/05/2013 10:14

Marking place. Smile

mttum · 10/05/2013 10:39

A bit confused with MFP. What I have (more or less) decided to do is to enter my TDEE as calculated on fitgirls site, taking into account exercise done weekly, and aim to have about that many calories on NFDs but not enter exercise onto MFP, as I think that would be double counting the exercise.

Am I right to do this? Hmm Is anyone else doing it like this?

INeedThatForkOff · 10/05/2013 10:41

Thanks Betsy

Another one: I've just calculated my net calorie consumption on MFP which it says should be 1460 a day for a 1lb loss a week. Should I add the 1920 I don't use on a fast day and spread it over the remaining 5?

ChesterDrawers · 10/05/2013 10:50

Was going to do a fast today but after my 36 hour one on Wednesday I really had no appetite yesterday so didn't eat much at all and was a bit worried I would end up not eating enough. So today will be a pretty healthy day, although I may bake with DS this afternoon so there may be cake.

Next fast will be Monday now, aiming for 36 hours again as I really found that good last time.

Good luck to everyone who's fasting today Smile

ELR · 10/05/2013 10:50

I would say yes you are right mttum and yes you are too ineed

ElizaCBennett · 10/05/2013 11:00

Weighed this morning and am 3/4 lb down! ShockWow, am really pleased as have not fasted at all since last Wednesday, not weighed and not watched what I ate.

Will stick with just the one 36 hour fast this week (yesterday) and back to normal next week.

I will try to only weigh once a week as I usually bounce up and down all week and that really frustrates me and makes me feel this WOE is not working, when clearly it is, happy happy Grin
