Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all, new here and from the US, todays my second consecutive fast. Yesterday was day one and since my TDEE is 2700 and I read for fast day I can take in 25% of tdee which for me would be about 700, so yday I took in a bit under 700 and today a bit over 500. I wasn't planning on fasting consecutively but I'm going out of town this weekend and wanted to get my fasts out the way. I'm also doing insanity, a very intense workout, and didn't want to fast until I get a week into this.

yday I ate throughout the day, it was very difficult and my blood sugar dropped low(not diabetic or have any problems, perfectly healthy) My body is just used to snacking often and so it was hard not to snack. Last night I had my last meal at 7-8pm and fasted until today at 1pm. So my first 17hr fast can't believe I did it. I was planning on making today a NFD but woke up feeling ok and not hungry so I just decided to fast.

Just have a question and warning TMI....

This was my longest fast ever, I've only fasted for 6-8 hours at most. Anyways since I've broken my fast I've had diarrhea. has this happened to anyone??

Well done, awoman! The first ones are the hardest, so doing two in a row is hardcore impressive (you know you're not supposed to do them consecutively usually, though, right?). Do you mind if I ask, are you trying to lose a lot of weight? Or are you very tall? 2700 is a high TDEE.

I'm fasting today after four days of eating normally. The good news is that yesterday morning I was still down at my lowest weight even after three days of free for all. The bad news is that I don't want to do this today. I'm a tad hungover (Eurovision), and it's cold in my office, and I want a huge bowl of spicy noodles.

SAF, I make a fasting day chicken, veg and lentil soup that sounds a lot like your butter bean one. I don't know the calorie difference between butter beans and lentils, but for mine, I do 400g chicken and 1 can brown lentils, carrots, broccoli, spices, harissa pasta, divide into four servings and that's about 220 cals a (HUGE) bowl. So if yours sounds similar, yes you can have two bowls!

Thank you tortoise, I do insanity and that plus walking about 10k steps/day puts my tdee that high, I'm 5'6 have a 33% bf and hoping to shed 15lbs of fat which would bring me to 25%bf then I would reassess. I know I can lose 25 lbs to bring me to 20% bf but I'd be too small and boney as I'm about 180 and wear my weight very well. Yea I know not to do them consecutively, and plan on doing my next week's fast on wed and fri.

Oh wow that's great I'm anxious to see if my weight stays down after the next 8 NFD Seem's like such a long time but I'm trying to put my fast days with my lower/moderate insanity workouts. Great job btw. Maybe some hot tea will warm you up? I know I always bring 2 tea bags to work as it's always cold in the office.

Also, after yday's fast I'm down 1.2 lbs. I've come into 5:2 with no expectations and just to see what happens with this new WOL. Since I have 15lbs to goal, well 14.4lbs now Grin I'm very optimistic about getting to my goal. I see a lot of people losing more than 1lb/week.

I've been on my WLJ(weight loss journey) since July 29, and I'm hoping to be at my goal weight/goal body by then. so I have 10 weeks to burn off 14.4lbs I'm ready to shift this weight out

Everyone is doing great and gives me hope!

Right right. I do 10K steps a day as well (Ode to My Fitbit: How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Steps), but maybe the insanity is the key. My TDEE is more like 1800 I think, I'm 135 and 5'4".

Had a miso soup and a skim coffee already today (this is my standard; around 100-150 cals during the day and then 350 in the evenings), but it's not working. I want ramen, dammit.

Report
awomanchanging · 20/05/2013 02:59

lol oo I see, yes I have a fitbit and love being motivated to take more steps. Yes Insanity alone burns on avg 5-600/workout and per fitbit tdee is 2700-2800, I also use a HRM for insanity.

I thought I was doing it wrong as it seemed people were fasting 24-36 hours until they ate. My first day I fasted 12 hours and then spread my meals out during the day. if I did that again is that incorrect? or is getting 16 hours minimum the key?

Report
Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/05/2013 03:09

I think some people talk about sixteen hours to let "the cells repair" although tbh I have no idea what that means. For the bare purpose of weight loss, it doesn't matter how many hours one goes zero calorie, what matters is the calorie deficit.

A lot of people go 24 hours because they find that it's easier to stay zero cal during the day and then have a heary dinner; so eat dinner at 7pm on one night, then no snacks after dinner and nothing until the next evening's dinner. 36 hours is the people who are doing zero cal fasts - so that would be eat normally on, say, Sunday, stop eating after dinner at 7pm then eat nothing at all Monday, then have breakfast at 7am Tuesday - ta da, 36 hour fast.

I do none of these, just spread out cals during the day, and I'm losing weight!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/05/2013 03:10

*hearty dinner, not heary.

Report
awomanchanging · 20/05/2013 03:31

Oh ok thanks for the clarification. I thought all that mattered was the deficit.

So nice to see more new starters, welcome toad and awoman. Impressive consecutive fast days awoman - no way could I do that!

Had quite the blow out weekend. Ate out no fewer than 4 times Blush and a friend returned from a trip to Germany with Milka chocolate for me. Get thee behind me Satan. (Or rather 'get in my mouth Milka'). Oops. But the great thing is not feeling I have 'ruined' everything with those treats. And weirdly I don't think I ate as much as I would've before on a night out. And I felt less good than after a virtuous FD. Is the reprogramming beginning? About to test the theory with some more Milka - not fasting til tues. Hehe.

Saf that butter bean and chicken stew sounds lush.

Weighed in , and I've lost another lb!

I saw 11st 11 lb ( moved up to 12lb so must be in between )

I spent the weekend eating badly as was with DD at a cheerleading and dance competition , spent a whole Sunday in a sports hall sitting watching routines ( had to eat a bar of fruit and nut and a strawberry cornetto to keep my strength up )

It should be a fast day today , but will do a soft fast ? wholemeal toast for breakfast , bowl of salad for lunch , and chicken breast with loads of veg for dinner .

Well done toad and womanchanging

Help needed please.

Fasting days are fine. I usually manage to eat nothing until a light supper of soup. Sometimes have apple and yogurt too. I get by the tough times by thinking"I can eat that tomorrow"

NFDs are more of a problem. I have better hunger awareness (is that a thing?) but I have developed a bit of "I can't eat that tomorrow (fasting day) so I'm going to east it all now" I can be mod ate with luxury treats like a couple of chocolate truffles or even a piece of lovely toast with honey, but in the evening I've recently had rubbish like extra cereal or a biscuit that I didn't really want.

So somebody please make me stop it.
I have only lost half a pound this week, which doesn't really count.

Fasting today and coping well with the magical aroma of homemad bread toasting for dh and ds.

Morning all. Fasting today, it may be a tough one after a fairly indulgent weekend with dinner out and cocktails on Saturday, and a trip to M&M world with the dc yesterday.

30 day squat challenge is still going, although I nearly forgot over the weekend and didn't do Saturday's until 10 to midnight so just scraped in. Eagle just jump straight back in with it.

Badcoc, how long have you been doing this? When I first started I would have soup for lunch (about 2pm), then some protein and veg for dinner (about5.30/6pm). Now I don't bother with lunch and just have dinner. But if you read through the threads we are all different, you have to work out what works best for you. Have you tried a marmite or boullion drink when you are struggling? I find they help a lot. Keep trying, you'll get there.

As this thread is almost full I've started a new one with links etc over here.

Just thought I'd get it done before heading out!

Again, if you've got new questions, stories to tell, comments etc, please take them to the new thread as they'll get lost at the end of this old one. Threads on Mumsnet close after 1000 post, hence our needing a new one.

See you on the new thread.

breakoutthekaraoke it's a bit of a "chuck various things in the slow cooker and see what happens" recipe but here you go!
Put following into slow cooker:
2/3 x chicken breasts (diced), 1 x chopped red pepper, 1 x chopped onion, 1 x tin chopped tomatoes plus a couple of teaspoons of garam masala, 1 x teaspoon turmeric, 1 x teaspoon coriander, half a teaspoon chilli flakes and seasoning.
Slow cook for approx 3hrs then add tin of chickpeas. Cook for further 3hrs ish then add small bag of spinach for last 30-45 mins.

By my reckoning that's about 400 cals for a portion (serves 2-3 people) so I'll have mine with a dollop of yoghurt on it and half a chapatti.

Hi all. I am really struggling to keep up with the thread as not online that much but still enjoying reading the posts than I can.

I have done a couple of weeks of 4:3 and my weight has dropped to 9st 10 so I have lost half a stone-woo hoo! Had a very social weekend and ate loads. Started a fast yesterday but had to stop as I had a pounding headache. Thought was going to be the same today but headache gone so I'm fasting.

TMI - awoman I think diarrhoea can sometimes happen until your body settles down a bit-I've had a few times when this has happened. I seem to be the other way now! Which, again, can be a side effect so I'm trying to up the fruit and fibrous foods.

emily I am the same on NFD-I seem to think I can eat whatever I want. I am more conscious of what I'm eating and don't always fancy it, but it's still not enough to stop me sometimes...

Sorry awoman, that TMI alert didnt mean that you'd posted too much-I was just warning everyone else about what I was posting! Grin
