Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

had thought about fasting today - low cal soup last night, no breakfast, no lunch. Decided Waitrose curry meal deal was much better! But we did get meal for three between four and are all full ...

Dotty342kids · 09/05/2013 20:21

Betsy, at least you enjoyed it! Hopefully you've got leftovers for another fast day too?

BetsyBell · 09/05/2013 20:28

Dotty No! Not even leftovers! good job or I'd be eating them right now [hungry face]

BetsyBell · 09/05/2013 20:30

Actually, if anyone's looking for something to put them off eating the Worm thread is hilarious and totally gross. You may not want to eat noodles or spagetti for a while...

BuntCadger · 09/05/2013 20:49

Goodness my spelling earlier was atrocious. I'm worried about piling weight on as bad for baby too. Fasted Tuesday (didnt know preg) and due to tomorrow. Was going to up cal to match dh as we've been doing this together. No idea about ketones in wee etc. very early days in preg, reckon due in jan.

Those of you not losing weight, there were week when I didn't lose but my shape changed.

Laska42 · 09/05/2013 21:37

hello, just to say Hi for those that remember me.. Im still around having 5:2'd since last August and maintaining since December at about 21lbs loss.

I'm usually on the maintainers board these days, but hoping to start the '2013 bikini diet' next week so planning on going back to 4:3 for a few weeks .. would like to lose another 5lbs if I can so that I can put it back on during my holiday!

This is a great WOE , I cant see me doing any other now .. reckon I'm on it for life .. Grin

bugsyburge · 09/05/2013 21:46

evening all, had a busy day today so not had time to read through yet but thought I'd report a NSV..... had a fee 'you look like you've lost weight' comments, one being from MIL to say I'm looking very skinny.... very happy with that as we go on our holidays next week for a fortnight to America so I'm sure I won't be skinny when I get back!!!!

NFD here today but I've eaten a random concoction...I was at a funeral so I haven't eaten a proper meal, just lots of nibbly bits- going to track the damage now on MFP.

fast day tomorrow, looking forward to it actually although I'm feeling hungry now so I'm not sure how well I'll get on Hmm

INeedThatForkOff · 09/05/2013 22:08

Couple more questions:

Is it really necessary to track NFDs? To me that seems to undermine the convenience of it.

Also, is anyone taking a low carb approach to their general eating? I known MM advocates low GI and wondered if this ties in with low(ish) carbs the rest of the time.

Talkinpeace · 09/05/2013 22:10

Forkoff
tracking on non fast days : no it is not necessary
UNLESS
you are currently significantly over weight
because your "normal" eating is excessive.
Once you get the hang of knowing what your TDEE calories are then you need not track any more

SlightlyJaded · 09/05/2013 22:11

Hello
I have been 5:2ing (with the odd 4:3) for about four weeks and have been lurking dipping in and out of these threads (which are brilliant by the way). I am posting mainly because then it's 'official' that I an 5:2ing and won't be able to cheat Grin

I also have one question about my NF Days (which I am sure has been answered elsewhere but there is quite a lot to trawl!). I think I am eating too few calories on my NFDs because I was so impatient keen to lose weight. So I am doing 2 days @ 500 or less cals and then around 1300 for the other 5. I am 5.6, medium build and weigh 12.5 stone (want to lose 2.5 stone) and then the plan was to continue with this WOE indefinitely but up the NFD calories.

But I am wondering if I am not helping myself by sticking to 1300 cals and should up it? And if so, to what (as in what would be the optimum amount to try and work with)

Am managing the 16 hour breaks on fasting days and was also thinking to try and incorporate that same timeframe into eating days - again not sure if this a good or bad thing.

Sorry to ask questions that I am sure have been answered

Paintingrainbowskies · 09/05/2013 22:23

Thanks Greeneggs for the new thread! (Well it's new to me but already 136 messages in!)

Fast day here and I am doing my first 36 hour total fast, so no 500 cals. I've had 2 black coffees and lots of water today but that is it till breakfast tomorrow.

I have been doing 5:2 for about 3 months, have lost 10lbs but felt I could shake things up a bit since I haven't really been losing. Read about 36 hour fasts on the fast forum.

I've felt fine all day but now I feel a bit bleugh, not hungry but my tummy feels a bit squeamish and I would be quite happy to Have my usual fast day 500 cals.

Only 10 hours till breakfast!

ElizaCBennett · 09/05/2013 22:41

Hi, have been visiting my new granddaughter (gorgeous; thank you for asking!) and have been unable to fast this week. Back now so am doing a 36 hour water fast today. Not eaten since last night and will not eat now until tomorrow.

Have been eating slightly over my TDEE while away and have not weighed so tomorrow's weigh in could be frightening!

Miffytastic · 09/05/2013 22:44

Jaded have you worked out your TDEE? I would have thought that if you stick at 1300 you'll lose quickly. I'm not sure /can't remember the science re: the alleged 'starvation mode' & eating under TDEE...

INeedThatForkOff · 09/05/2013 22:54

Thanks Talkinpeace. You've just described me so I think I'll need to MFP for a while. Once I've got the balance right and I'm no longer BFing I'm going to do 36hr fasts, but until then I'll track my whole TDEE and have a 500 cal lunch on fast days to keep the supply going. Does that sound reasonable?

peplum41 · 10/05/2013 01:18

Hi all,
mehefin how lovely to see you back here! Glad you're persevering, are you almost a size 12 now?

jaded by all means stick to 1300 while you have the willpower, but that won't last, then aim to have your TDEE amount which will be a few hundred higher. I find my willpower comes in waves, sometimes virtuous, othertimes downright gluttonous, so hopefully the former balances out the latter. I'm not as greedy as I used to be. I sometimes feel as though I've had a grastric band fitted without the gruesome op.

Emilythornesbff · 10/05/2013 01:50

Oops! I have eaten chocolate and an ice cream today (NFD). I hope i'm not undoing the good work of my fasts. I really miss my slim, toned self

Well done bugsy painting and laska .

3rd fast of the week tomorrow (my first 4:3). Must buy some different tea.
Very tired.

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 10/05/2013 04:43

Chester, I didn't mean your plan was a problem, I'm a total ignoramus newbie myself. Just impressed that you can manage that plan. Especially at first.

Emily, your dc is only three months old, don't be too harsh on yourself, a lot of that weight will come off naturally anyway.

mttum · 10/05/2013 05:54

Woohoo! Couldn't stay in bed any longer as had to get up and weigh myself this morning, and... (Roll on drums)... Down 14.5 lb, from 15st 5lb on 23 April to 14st 4.5lb today Grin Grin. I KNOW I can't keep up this rate - 3 x 36 hour total fast per week, AND watching intake on NFDs - but it sure as hell is a good start for me; feeling very motivated now to get the next stone off, even if it does come off a lot slower.

Just wondering how to reward self without going completely over the top and undoing ALL the good work (I don't mind undoing a bit of it Wink. Any ideas?

Good luck to all fasters, and all those weighing in today Smile

DorisShutt · 10/05/2013 06:55

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

First weigh in! Last Friday I was 12st 10lbs/81kg.

Today I am

12st 2lbs / 77kg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (With apologies for all the exclamations but an 8lb / 4kg loss merits it in my book!)

swallowedAfly · 10/05/2013 07:10

morning all.

despite not fasting AGAIN i'm 10.13 again. i haven't fasted all week and haven't seen 11 at all - been between 10.11.4 and 10.13.8 this week. i am a bit torn as to whether to fast today or whether to just call this a week off and let my body do whatever it's doing.

think i will start out aiming for the fast but if it really doesn't feel right i'll eat tonight.

have been paranoid that i'm going to get a killer migraine or dip into some freakish out of nowhere depression all week as i've been feeling so strange and that has made me want to listen to my body and give it what it wants and fasting hasn't felt right when i've tried. has been strange that my weight has stayed down.

right! babble over - will aim to fast today. well done to losers, hang in there to stickers and may the force be with today's fasters Smile

Southeastdweller · 10/05/2013 07:16

Morning all.

Well done to everyone who's lost this week.

This week I've lost 1 and a half lbs so my total is now 18 and a half lbs over 15 weeks and I've reached another all-time low. I haven't felt this good in years Smile

doris I've done five weeks on 4:3 and found them as manageable as 5:2 weeks. I was just careful to do them on days when I knew I'm going to be busy, like with 5:2.

ELR · 10/05/2013 07:18

Morning all, woohoo weighed this morning and down 1.75lb so am now 10st1.75 nearly in the 9's!! Also my scales show water retention and I was 52.5% usually I am 51% due on any day now so maybe even a little more to come off soon!

So pleased have been on a bit of a stall for the whole of April so just proves you need to stick with it and it will eventually shift.
Good luck all fasters today.

ELR · 10/05/2013 07:21

swallowed yes good idea to listen to your body and see how you feel today. Have a good weekend!

MelanieCheeks · 10/05/2013 07:28

saf Fasting is mental - if your head's not in the right place then it becomes very difficult if not impossible.

I had a not-great fast day yesterday - was doing fine on only tea and coffee until mid-afternoon, when a little 95 calorie Graze box called to me. I knew I could spare the calories no problem, but that started off a real sugar craving. Lesson learned!

No change on today's weigh-in, which was what I expected after a largish drop last week.

ForkOff I still watch carbs even on normal days - more because I know how my stomach and body reacts when I eat too many. Carb-sensitivity varies greatly from person to person, though.

mttum I like little pamper rewards - getting my nails done, giving myself a facial etc.

Bramblesinafield · 10/05/2013 07:36

Omg at Doris and well done keep going all.

Another lb off in a week almost a stone. I went over very slightly yesterday - that'll teach me to bake bread!- but only a teeny slice.
