The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi and hello to loads of new people

I weigh monthly and as predicted I plateaued this month. I wasn't surprised as I had been a bit unwell and had had some much needed time off work when I just relaxed, also I had lost about 10% of my body weight which I read was a resetting point.

However when I put my uniform on after 2 weeks the trousers were not staying up properly so same weight but different size ! Think I will make do with safety pins until I can (hopefully) ask for a size 12!

peplum my clients do not sleep well but in a building with a lot of stairs I see the constantly ringing bells as a chance for exercise.

saf out of interest I weighed myself every day for one week. I had a spread of 4lbs if I had taken the lowest weight my plateau would have been a 3lb loss

For all those starting out stick with this and changes will happen

ChesterDrawers · 09/05/2013 16:03

Tiredmamma plan is to go from 8pm-ish on Sunday til 8am on Tuesday then eat normally on Tuesday and then go without til 8am on Thursday. Just lots of water and a couple of black coffee. I did Sunday 10pm til 10am this morning and found it ok, no more difficult than a regular 500 cal fast.

akarucker · 09/05/2013 16:06

Fast fail!! Had my soup at 1pm - way too early. It awoke the hunger demon, and it was Me vs Hunger Demon. I lost...

I can probably still just write today off as a 'good day' because I'll be under TDEE (I hope - there's the evening to get through yet!), but the fast day has gone out the window.

I should know by now - WAIT UNTIL LATE to break the fast. Doing it early in the day does not work for me!!!

BetsyBell · 09/05/2013 16:19

nofork You can do it how ever works best for you - occasionally I use all the cals in one evening meal but more usually spread it out over lunch and dinner, it just depends on what I'm doing or how I feel that day. You are meant to count the milk too but you should allow yourself some extra calories for BF anyway I think.

Everyone loses differently and often, for me, it's a way to not put weight on (rather than lose) - which I do if I have 7 eating days per week generally, unless I'm very careful. But I'd rather have 2 fast days and then relax the rest of the time. Many people find that after a few fasts they can't eat as much as before anyway.

Good luck fasters! This is the hardest time of the day for me Shock, just gotta get through to 6pm...

plecofjustice · 09/05/2013 16:19

I had a fail yesterday. An extremely long day at work coupled with a bit of PMT and I ended up eating Pret chocolate rice cakes for lunch, chilli and nachos for dinner with 1/2 a bottle of wine, couple of cans of pop and some humous. Was really loooking forward to my fast today after that!

Americano · 09/05/2013 16:22

Sympathies aka that was me yesterday. Usually eat nothing or nothing till evening on a fast day and for some reason had a bowl of soup for lunch which turned on my hunger. Before I knew it, the day was a non-fast day and then a feast day Blush

Now having to fast today. It's not been my best, milky coffee and tea, a cuppa soup etc but aiming to stay well under the 500 and then I'll be back in the game... here's hoping!

INeedThatForkOff · 09/05/2013 16:23

Is there an overview of 5:2ers progress anywhere? I'm nosy looking for as much inspiration as possible before I start Smile

MelanieCheeks · 09/05/2013 16:40

To be honest, results vary. Plus what works for me might not work for you. The only way is going to be to try it for yourself.

BsshBossh · 09/05/2013 16:51

ForkOff try this thread:
www.52fastdiet.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1925

Average loss for both 5:2 and 4:3 tends to be 1 lb a week.

LadyStark · 09/05/2013 17:01

My first fast day today, had a hard boiled egg for breakfast and tuna salad for lunch, have almost 300 cals left for dinner so it's been a good first day. I am on train home and feeling hungry though!

Purplehulk · 09/05/2013 17:03

Hi Everyone, can I join in?
I've started the 5:2 today and its going much better than I possibly imagined.
Lots of water and lemon tea so far today and looking forward to a stir fry for dinner!

tiredemma · 09/05/2013 17:56

does it matter if I'm on 540 calories? I miscalculated my veg with my fish and have gone over.

don't have to fast again tomorrow do i???

virginposter · 09/05/2013 18:08

tiredemma that is classed as a fast so no, tomorrow you may eat Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 09/05/2013 18:09

virgin I read that in the style of an emperor deciding whether the gladiator shall be spared. Confused And today isn't even a fast day...

ceebeegeebies · 09/05/2013 18:15

Just a quickie before I go and catch up - quick tip, on a fasting day, do not cook garlic bread for the DC Wink My willpower has been tested to the limits today!!

NoForkNKnife · 09/05/2013 18:56

Have just added what I'm about to cook into MFP and also added in the 4 coffees and the daily total is 604 cals! Have I ruined it? Shall I rethink my dinner plans?

Maybe should just have the cod without the lentils Sad. I've been looking toward to it all day. But I don't wan to cheat and then mess up my chances of losing. How strict is everyone on 500cals?

Ellliiieee · 09/05/2013 18:57

Wow Virgin... Good for you and Thanks. Sometimes you just need to know that you are getting somewhere as gained 2lbs after my 1st NFD after 1st FD and that's enuf to send me to choc brownie blow it land!
I will check the maintainers for extra motivation and do another FD Sunday - will attempt a 24 hr- there's some steely strong girls on here!
Fat off fat!

MelanieCheeks · 09/05/2013 18:59

NoFork, I do try to plan ahead and keep under 500. But for the first few fasts, don't be too hard on yourself.

DorisShutt · 09/05/2013 19:15

Can I just do a quick Mexican wave style celebration?

Been doing this for about a week, and I've managed to be under my MFP/TDEE allocation for each day by a few calories and more importantly, I have enough spare calories from today's food to have a glass of red wine and a mini caramel cornetto!!!

I may be back depressed tomorrow after my weigh in, but tonight is all about the Wine!!!

INeedThatForkOff · 09/05/2013 19:15

BsshBossh, that forum is great. Does anyone here use it? I have to say I'm blown away by how this WOE has taken hold.

swallowedAfly · 09/05/2013 19:22

evening - i got left behind and now you're on page 5 already so no chance of catching up.

fast when by the wayside today. not one fast done this week yet. don't know what's up with me - really not feeling myself. if worst comes to worst and it's a whole week off it won't be the end of the world.

will try to keep up.

NoForkNKnife · 09/05/2013 19:22

Thanks Mel. I've re-thought dinner and knocked another 100cals off. It's adding the coffee that's grown me today. I never knew it expected a cup of coffee to be 30* calories, and I've had 4 cups today. I should go back to drinking it black.

Dotty342kids · 09/05/2013 19:45

Just had most lovely fd dinner of harissa chicken traybake with roasted squash and red onion, on a whole heap of salad. Delicious and just under 400 cals Smile. Eating day tomorrow and my mum's turned up with home made scones and some clotted cream, cannot wait!

BsshBossh · 09/05/2013 19:49

ForkOff I'm on that forum alot these days. There's also a terrific (and private) Facebook group too. Search for "5:2 Intermittent Fasting Diet" - it's very, very active and full of lovely, supportive people.

BetsyBell · 09/05/2013 19:56

Quick moan, I got a bit cross with my DH today as he said he was going to join me with fasting today so I made an effort to produce a nice meal for us both - as well as an entirely different meal for the kids. It turned out he didn't bother so I could have avoided the extra kitchen effort and had one of my meal pot soup things while he ate same as the kids. Ah well, truth is I'm very tired and grumpy this afternoon having got up at 6 to do a 40minute run. I was properly hungry too earlier - not so bad now after the, admittedly, lovely meal!

Anyway, aside from that I've had an excellent fast day and up to the point where I had to cook 2 meals I was bursting with energy post-run so it's been easy. I even got offered cake and wrapped it up to eat tomorrow [virtuous halo glint] I may eat DH's share too - that'll serve him right! Grin
