Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

PPC I wouldn't worry, it'll be easy to pop that lb back on with a few eat days! (If you're me anyway!)

I am maintaining well - would be happy to drop another 5lbs but just as happy to stay as I am - but need to tone up. NSV yesterday was seeing some photos of myself from over the weekend and mistaking me for someone else - turns out I really am slim now! Lots of compliments too [basks in warm glow] Grin

Managed my first bit of proper exercise for ages and got out for a good run this morning. I'm on a fast day with the result that I'm now hungry and tired though - not great for 8.40 in the morning!

Coffee next then...

Lovely when the good feedback comes and the little realizations - like tightening belts, gappy trousers and, for me, realizing when having time for a rare bath not shower that I wasn't staring at a giant tummy, but a much smaller one! Certainly I can understand what people mean when they say curves are melting as the cake shelf around my middle is more like a fairy cake shelf than a muffin top now.

On my thurs fast. Missed mon due to bh, had such a busy day yesterday that it ended up being around an 800 cal day, so hopefully these two together will maintain the shift. Then no more fasting until Mon.

Well done Betsy, I am finally losing here-2lb this week! I had been reading all the posts on here from people with large initial losses and I had had just 1lb loss over 3 weeks which was a bit depressing and not hugely motivating, however that was including a birthday and wknd away so suppose its not that bad! Anyway hopefully it will pick up a bit now.
Wishing all of you fasting today a good day.

Morning everyone, fasting today and feel like I really need it. Have had a bad few days of eating not bad stuff just too much! I was having one of those starving days yesterday where no matter what I ate I still felt hungry! Went over tdee by about 300 so not terrible but if you count the massive eating weekend it's pretty bad.
Just been on a 4 mile bike ride so that may help a bit and have Pilates later too. Drank loads of water but feeling a bit hungry so think I will go and have a black coffee and then do some ironing.

brambles I loved your bath comments - I was thinking the exact same the other week. Still a good sized stomach but it's less enormous and it's sort of, softer? Less solid if you know what I mean? Anyway, it's progress! Smile

And well done applegate too, it's good to have large losses but I was never like that, but it's been slow and steady and I see no reason to stop so hopefully it'll continue to come off in 1lb or 0.5lb chunks...

Hi, been on 5-2 since August and now have perfect bmi. Found out I'm pregnant this morning and still bfing 18 m old. I don't want to stop 5-2 as prone to gest diabetes and don't want to pile on weight. Was thinking I could up cal on fast day to 600 cal.

Things to do on a fast day - go to the dentist.

I had to have an old filling replaced, so my mouth will be numb for the rest of the morning I guess.

I tried out the chilli brocoli soup that was in the Grauniad recipes last night - DH wasn't keen, but it's a nice variation from other soups. I've kept the leftovers in the freezer for next week.

NFD for me today - and I'm not hungry; I am quite thirsty though. I've done my two FD's for the week, but am seriously contemplating a third tomorrow; primarily because I know that I have a thing next weekend which will be a bit of a blow out in terms of crap food and booze.

Anyone find 4:3 doable?

Ah Congrats buntcadger,Flowers wouldn't know what to say about fasting when pregnant, leave that to some one more expert like dr m on his site.( No probably.) How much did you lose and how long did it take to get to BMI goal?

betsy cant believe you didn't recognise yourself in a photo! The last photo I saw of me was when Id just started 5:2 back in feb. Its on my friends phone, she showed it me the other week. I look like a fat witch stood next to a tree, wearing a skirt that was too tight(left zip undone a little),same skirt is now very roomy.

Any one with clothes they want to give away, if you can get to an M&S today, they will give you a £5 voucher, and the donated item goes to Oxfam. Sadly, Ive got to go to bed as at work again tonight. Attempting some sort of mini fast today, which usually involves not eating until about 3, then eating whatever I fancy for the rest of the day. Its the best I can do as cant fast again until next Thursday. I will be huge by then! aaah

Hello!
I'm back.
I started this WOL earlier in the year but lost my way. Big fail as that just sounds like a faddy diet! And I know this isn't.
So onto the scales this morning 68.5kg
(10kg more than I would like it!)
I've been to the gym for a thirty min session on the treadmill mixture of jogging and walking and now onto my fast day.
I found I better not eating until dinner time -sipping tea during the day. Partly because my pantry/fridge is never prepared for low cal breakfasts and dinners and also its easier to eat more during the day well for me anyway.
So I'm going to say today is day one and I will promise to myself and the lovely world of mn that I will make it my way of life!

No fasting while pregnant, or still growing.

The science behind fasting is that you dont want to grow new cells, you want your body to repair its existing ones.

But obviously if you're still growing, ie a child, or have a new lfie growing inside you, then making new cells is EXACTLY what you want your body to do.

I've just finished my first week (week starts Thursday for me as that's when I weigh). Did 500 call on Friday and have just broken a 36hr water (and two black coffees) fast now. Was down 2.5lbs this morning on last Thursday, which I am pleased with as I ate what I wanted over the bank hol.

Going for 500 cals on fri and two 36 hr fasts on mon and wed next week so hoping if I can curb my overeating on food days I will see a good loss.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi, I read pretty much the whole of the last thread last night which helped get me through the difficult bits.

Well did 2 rather half-hearted fasts this week, due largely to circumstances - but seem to be 4lbs down from starting weight - so 2lb a week whilst eating like a greedy piglet on NFD. It's just a weird week - loads of eating out Confused

bunt Flowers congrats!!! No advice I'm afraid though x

Normally only weigh myself on fast day mornings, but tmi alert off to get mirena inserted so wanted to know my weight in case it affects me. I've lost a stone!!!! Started 19th Apr so only 6 fasts too. I think this woe definitely works if you've a lot to lose (I'm only 15% closer to target weight). I shall celebrate with cake, or a choccie bar!

Elliiiiieeee Before starting IF I lost 2 stone over the course of 18months by gradually changing up my eating habits and doing more exercising and plateaued around 11stone. I started 5:2 mid Jan and have lost another stone including fat around my post kids tummy that I thought would never shift. I put on weight very easily so this way of eating allows me to maintain easily rather than pile it back on. Most of us find we look forward to fast days after a few days of normal eating - and it does get easier I promise!

Bunt Wow! Congratulations on pregnancy and all that weight loss - very impressive. Not sure about fasting and pregnancy - have you looked up any research into it?

peplum You just made me laugh hard with your fat witch comment Grin

FF Me too, I was just loitering near the kids - the main focus of the pictures!

applegate Just think if you hadn't be IFing through those events you'd probably be 5lbs up (I know I would be) so a loss of any kind is a fantastic achievement Smile

Brambles It's so great seeing real evidence of changes isn't it? The scales don't quite tell the whole picture do they?

Hungerpangs have been dismissed with masses of hot drinks (black coffee & herbal tea), will be peeing for England this afternoon!

Eagle Take a couple of ibuprofen before you go - it helps as can be quite painful. I've never found Mirena to have any effect on my weight at all and you don't have to suffer all that hormonal eating and bloating that periods bring - I think my periods got gradually lighter over 6 months then completely stopped. Bliss. In fact I've just realised I haven't had a period in at least 7 years Grin

Bunt congrats - but the book is very sepcific in its list of people who shouldn't fast, and if you're pregnant then it's defineitly not recommeded.

Congrats Bunt! I've just had dc2. I don't know anything about this WOE, but my gut says probably not a good idea whilst pregnant. You'd very quickly have ketones in your urine-you get them whilst pregnant even when you skip one meal. It's not great for baby.

First fd ever here. Going well so far, especially since day started at 5am! Haven't had a morsel. Is it best to fast until dinner and use the 500 cals then?

Is anyone planning their first fast for next Monday? I'm raring to go but holding off as I'm going out on Saturday night and want to make sure I can express plenty of milk before then. Hungry days tend to affect my supply and I'd rather not crack open the formula just yet.

1/2/13, 10.10
8/2/13, 10.11
15/2/13, 10.9
1/3.13, 10.6
5/3/13, 10.5
15/3/13, 10-3
15/3/13, 10.4.5
22/3/13,10.5
28/3/13, 10.5
7/4/13, 10.6
12/4/13, 10.4.5

25/4/13, 10.2.5
2/5/13, 10.3.5
9/2/13, 10.3.25

As you can see I have barely lost any weight for nine weeks. I mean I have becauseI went up a bit after Easter but. URGH, I really really want to be about 7lbs less, which would mean a comfortable size 12 (not a-can't-sit-down-in-trousers-12) and I want to be
