Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

My lovely supportive not so D H has just made himself a bacon butty Envy

The whole house now smells of it. I am having a black coffee Sad

postmanpatscat · 19/05/2013 08:38

Stuffed myself silly yesterday, must be TOTM or something. Back on the wagon today and fasting either today or tomorrow, will decide later.

fluffypillow · 19/05/2013 08:39

chester just imagine the one you will have tomorrow, guilt free Smile

On one of my fast days last week, my mouth was watering so much everytime I smelled food! Drove me crazy Grin

Good luck for your fast today, and enjoy your NFD tomorrow

Dotty342kids · 19/05/2013 09:07

saf that's really good to hear, albeit a little weird! I daren't follow your example as don't think it would work quite the same for me although I broke out of my plateau after my very over indulgent birthday weekend so perhaps there is something in the "overeat and it'll all start falling off again" theory Grin

Lazytoad · 19/05/2013 09:17

Hello! I know I'm a bit late but Please can I join? I'm starting today and feel I might need a bit of help. I'm going to use myfitnesspal to log what I eat. Today is a fast day and so far I have had a coffee with ss milk (a must I'm afraid). I've got ideas for lunch and dinner but I have no idea what to have for breakfast, I am a big toast and cereal girl. Any suggestions? I'm not big on fruity breakfasts. Thank you!!

ChesterDrawers · 19/05/2013 09:29

Hi toad. I'm relatively new too but have found this thread to be really useful and the people friendly and knowledgable.

In terms of what to eat on a fast day, I tend not to eat til evening as I find any food tends to turn on my hunger and makes it much harder to fast.

I think eggs would be a good choice though if you feel you need to eat, the protein will help to fill you up. I would try to avoid carbs as they will just make you more hungry.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/05/2013 09:31

lazy this won't help you today but I've switched in general to weight watchers bread. Its thinner and smaller than standard but 51cals a slice. I get my toast fix whilst not wasting all my Tdee on breakfast.

Lazytoad · 19/05/2013 09:37

Thanks guys. I was going to have eggs for lunch, maybe I should change that as I've got more ideas for lunch. Good idea about the bread. I'm hopeless with diets but I like the idea of this one.

Emilythornesbff · 19/05/2013 09:48

Hi lazytoad

I can't manage if I eat breakfast on a fasting day. It wakes up the hunger. My most successful fasting days are when I eat nothing until my early supper.
I too love toast. I save it for weekend NFDs when I can enjoy a good slice of homemade bread toasted nd topped with honey [faints]
Good luck today. I fasted yesterday and felt really good this morning.
Em

Emilythornesbff · 19/05/2013 09:50

Oh eggs are good. Or meat or fish.
I think the ideal is plants and protein.

silverbeetle · 19/05/2013 09:51

Help!!
Had a bit of a euro-vision blow out last night, some deep pan pizza, chip shop chips, 4 glasses of wine and a small piece of cheesecake. This is the first time I have done something like this since starting this WOL.
Went to bed feeling like crap, stomach actually hurt so knew I'd overdone it.

Jumped on the scales this morning and I've put on 3.5lbs in a day!!!!
Going to fast today mainly because I still feel really full and uncomfortable but has anyone else experienced this massive overnight weight gain? Any advice will be gratefully received. Sad

Emilythornesbff · 19/05/2013 09:57

silverbeetle imagine if you weighed all that food. It's probably still sitting somewhere in your gut.
Just fast o
If you want to. No guilt. That's the point of 5:2 yes?

frenchfancy · 19/05/2013 09:58

Hi toad and welcome abord. If it isn't too late then I would say don't eat breakfast. Wait ad long as you can then if needs be have an early lunch. you really will find it easier than eating breakfast I promise.

mehefin · 19/05/2013 09:59

silverbeetle Don't panic ! It's not fat, think how much that food actually weighed plus water retention due to all the salt.

Eat lightly or mini fast and let it work its way through your system

mehefin · 19/05/2013 10:02

Emily xposts or great minds !

Bramblesinafield · 19/05/2013 10:02

Silverbeetle, don't worry, exactly as every one says its undigested food. I'm in the same boat, and am also comfy with the fact that its kicked my body out of fast mode, so tomorrow's fast will be nice and efficient.

It also helps me to think that since my target is 10.4, I need to get to about 10-10.2 so that my target is the upper limit of my bounce rather than the lower.

Lazytoad · 19/05/2013 10:08

Thanks Emily and French, I'm going to wait if I can. Must keep busy!! I only heard about the diet two days ago so my fridge is not really prepared. My breakfast yesterday was 500cals in itself!

silverbeetle · 19/05/2013 10:09

Thanks for the words of commonsense Emily and mehefin I didn't think about all the water retention, it was really salty, and it definitely still feels as though it's in my gut. Perhaps a sit on the loo with a good book will help Grin. The annoying thing was that I didn't even enjoy the food that much as it was so different to what I normally eat.

Really not hungry, the thought of food actually makes me feel sick. So will listen to my body today and put it down to experience.

silverbeetle · 19/05/2013 10:14

Brambles that's a good point about setting an 'upper bounce limit'.
Hopefully we'll feel much better after our normal fast tomorrow Smile

Thank goodness for all the lovely people on this thread - I find it so helpful Thanks

Southeastdweller · 19/05/2013 10:15

Welcome toad. I was also going to suggest not bothering with breakfast today. Try and drink as much zero calorie drinks as you can too.

Lazytoad · 19/05/2013 10:27

Thanks Southeast. I have a menu into mfp for the day: grilled bacon and poached egg for lunch, chicken, veg and a little rice for tea. Hopefully I can stick to it. Evenings are my weak spot, maybe I'll just have to go to bed earlier!

meandmyfour · 19/05/2013 10:33

Good to hear I'm not alone with the weekend over indulgence. Made a carrott cake yesterday, cream cheese icing...lethal.

Has anyone else noticed a er...slowing down of (TMI) bowel movements on this woe?? I used to be as regular as anything but not anymore ...Blush
Hi apple - I'm going to try really hard this week to just keep things simple, two 500 days and then 'normal'...I'm definitely overcomplicating a very simple concept. Fingers crossed I'll start properly losing...I'd be happy with a pound a week, as long as it's a genuine loss. Sigh.

ChesterDrawers · 19/05/2013 10:40

I suppose if there's less going in there's less to come out meandmyfour!?

BsshBossh · 19/05/2013 10:45

silverbeetle I put on 3 lbs overnight last week too after a very indulgent day but it was food/water weight not actual fat gain and sure enough those lbs are gone (haven't fasted, just sensible eating).

mttum · 19/05/2013 11:22

meandmy, it's true that less going in will mean less coming out. TMI ALERT! After a fast day, for me there is virtually no point in going to the loo, IYSWIM. I am trying to make sure I drink plenty (water) and get plenty of fresh fruit & veg, whole grains etc. Seems to do the trick on the days after NFDs. I don't want to get into the world of laxatives, that would be a bad sign as far as I'm concerned .
