The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just been reading that some of you are experiencing similar-
I stupidly stepped on the scales this morning and I've bounced up 3lbs Shock. Sooooo disappointed. I expected a little bounce as I overindulged on pizza last night (but was very good during day). Are these bounces that people talk about, temporary? Or was the low yesterday false? I'm confused and a little depressed Sad. Im hoping you're going to say its salt bloat.
I was going to do pasta for dinner tonight but might have to have a rethink. Oh, and it the first time I've had breakfast all week and it's properly back fired.
I enjoyed the wine last night though...

INeedThatForkOff · 18/05/2013 11:07

NoFork, I've always found bounces after an indulgent weekend to be temporary. They always disappear within a couple of days of eating normally again for me (this is my experience pre-5:2). I am finding it helpful to look at and make a note of my weight every day just for now, so that I can get used to the pattern and range without getting too disheartened.

akarucker · 18/05/2013 11:12

nofork last week I took a week off from weighing myself. On the scales this morning and I show a 2lb gain. I'm not doing that again, because I was unable to see my low for the week (I hope there was a low!!), and now it's very de-motivating. So I'll be back do daily weigh ins so that I can monitor properly. I mean, what if I hit a new low this week, but never saw it...depressing!

Southeastdweller · 18/05/2013 11:44

Welcome me I suspect you're bouncing because you're under eating on some of your NFD's. There should be a consistent contrast between your NFD's and fast days.

Maybe another reason is because you may not be overweight and your body is reluctant to shed any weight now? I think it took a few months for Mimi Spencer to lose six kilos (she was never overweight - just put on half a stone or more during pregnancy that didn't shift).

meandmyfour · 18/05/2013 12:04

Thank you South - you are probably right. I'm just finding it quite hard to eat normally the day after a fast for fear of undoing the good work. It really does boil down to trusting that this works and judging by all your successes, it definitely does!
Anyway, just eaten bacon and eggs followed by tea and biscuits so don't think under eating is going to be a problem today!

postmanpatscat · 18/05/2013 12:22

Hello me It can work well for those with less to lose as well...I started at 10st (BMI 24) and lost 20lbs. Do try to eat to TDEE on NFDs (even if it means counting calories). Good luck!

Talkinpeace · 18/05/2013 12:24

Feet Shrinking
Yup they do - by quite a bit.
If you wiggle your toes, can you see each of the tendons move on the top of your feet? Is there a hollow on either side of your achilles tendon?
If not you have fat on your feet that will go as you lose weight.
Some people have dropped 2 shoe sizes.

Another thing to bear in mind is that your fingers will shrink too.
When I lost 3 stone I went down two ring sizes so DH had to buy me a ring to hold my wedding ring on!

Had not planned to fast today but woke up still feeling full from last night's curry so will wait till supper and have Pizza while watching Eurovision.

ponygirlcurtis · 18/05/2013 12:47

Thanks peplum, Talkinpeace and Emilythorne - I actually feel pretty good today.
Talk - I mostly post on a support thread in Relationships for abused partners, and have to say that's been the thing keeping me going for the last year. I know some parts of Relationships can get a bit full-on sometimes, but the women on that thread are nothing short of amazeballs. Grin

Inlovewithchocolate - I found I went up a shoe size when I was at my heaviest, so I guess you can lose weight from your feet!

INeedthatForkOff - that's fantastic!! And ceebeegeebies!

After my FD yesterday I feel all cleansed and good. Done masses of cleaning this morning, and about to head off out for a while going to slope to my parents' house and weight myself!. No counting at all for me today, going to have a day off from it - having a little Eurovision night with my bestie, with wine and pizza, and I reeeeeeeally fancy a bacon sarnie. Feel I've earned it!

Have a good day everyone.

mttum · 18/05/2013 15:48

I thought it would be a change for me to plan what I am going to have to eat on my NFD today. Wasn't especially hungry this morning, so thought I might go til supper (guests coming) and splurge then. So this is what I'm going to have:

Mushroom pâté and toast
Spag Bol (vegan) and whole wheat pasta. I have allowed for seconds!
Lemon cheesecake
Fresh fruit salad
After dinner mints
Oh and crisps and cashews beforehand. Grin

All this comes in well below my TDEE, so I've just had a bowl of porridge, so I don't go TOO mad when feeding time starts.

Roll on 7 o'clock!!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 18/05/2013 16:03

Inlaws are visiting. I'm unlikely to manage a proper day fast (might be able to on Monday or Tuesday, depends on what their plans are. They leave Weds so that'll be a proper fast for sure!) but I think I'll be able to do a stretch of 24 hours. I always tell people not to bother with these Grin and I wouldn't make them my usual fast, but if it's the only way to get a fast in, that's what I'll have to do. We had a lunch out today, and I am making a beef rendang tomorrow evening. I'll be able to avoid food until then no problem.

I'd probably not worry so much about fitting fasts in, but I've had a busy month or more, and a trip to Paris is looming on the horizon. There's very little chance I'll be fasting during THAT particular 5-day trip, so I've got to get them in and done properly beforehand.

It's great to read so many positive stories. Welcome to all the new folks! Thanks

I have a quick question for those that have been 5:2ing for a while now.

So far this week I have fasted mon, wed and fri, although cos I WI on thurs that means two fasts last week and one so far this week. I am planning to fast on wed again, day before next WI, but I am half thinking about doing another one tomorrow. Reason is I am off work mon and tues so am worried I will overeat (likely) and gain.

So that will be mon, wed, fri, sun, wed - is that too much? I feel I CAN do it but I'm worried my body might think this is normal and when I try to go back to 5:2 it will make me gain!

Any advice much appreciated.

postmanpatscat · 18/05/2013 17:02

chester your body doesn't make those sort of decisions! How about doing a mini fast tomorrow if you fancy it e.g. nothing til the evening but then have whatever you like? Or could you fit in some exercise Mon and Tues instead of extra food?!

frenchfancy · 18/05/2013 17:34

You would be doing ADF for a week basically then going back to 5:2. Nothing wrong with that. It is probably a good way to shake things up. There is no reason whatsoever that it will make you gain, quite the opposite I should think.

Dotty342kids · 18/05/2013 17:37

saf I now seem to be bouncing between 10st 11 and 10st 13 so yes, am hoping I've seen the back of the 11s too!
On Friday I briefly glimpsed 10st 10 before settling on 10st 11.
My goal is to get to 10st 8 as then I'll have lost exactly a stone and know I'll be looking nice in all my clothes again. I'll also just about be scraping into the healthy BMI range.
Not sure yet what I'll do after that (still doubting that's even possible but I'm trying to believe it is!) as any less than that has never been sustainable for me but we'll see how I feel when I get there Smile

Emilythornesbff · 18/05/2013 18:26

Oops. Just ate a pistachio nut Blush

EagleRiderDirk · 18/05/2013 18:55

Emily If you've managed to eat just one then I commend you!

My uber exciting dinner tonight is mashed potato and gravy. And there are no words for how much I'm looking forward to it!

Talkinpeace · 18/05/2013 19:58

Chester
as you get more used to it, fasting because you ate too much the day before or plan to eat too much tomorrow is dead easy

Dotty
I'll bet you a fiver that in a year you'll beaiming for a BMI if 22.5
BECAUSE
small targets are fine, but truly healthy weights are in the 19 to 23 range for the vast majority of women

Emilythornesbff · 18/05/2013 20:34

Mmm eaglerider that does indeed sound good.
I had a tea plate portion of chicken parmigiana (took the cheese off the top) with green beans, then a yogurt. I guestimated around 500 cals.
Pistachio's are good ecause they're a PITA to open Grin.

dotty well done for kicking those 11s out the door.

applegate · 18/05/2013 20:53

me I have also had really slow weight loss, I started in mid April and have only lost 3lb which considering some of the losses on here is a bit disheartening, I only want to lose about 9lb though and have wondered if that's why the loss has been slower.. I suppose it is nearly lb a week which isn't unreasonable and because this woe is so easy to incorporate into normal life its no hardship but just a bit frustrating at times when I would like to see a quicker loss!

Southeastdweller · 18/05/2013 21:20

Bit of a tough Fast day today as I got a few loud hunger pangs which I put down to overdoing it a little on two NFD's previously - I think my body wanted more of the same today. Also didn't drink quite enough water as I usually do, which reminds me that I need to get a glass of it now before bed.

Emilythornesbff · 19/05/2013 06:27

applegate I think having less to lose slows it down a bit. While I was officially overweight the Lbs seemed to drop quickly. Now my BMI is well within healthy range it's definitely slower.
But it's still moving in the right direction.

ChesterDrawers · 19/05/2013 07:07

Right am gonna try and fast today. Am feeling a bit hung over so hoping the munchies don't hit but if they do and I have to eat, so be it.

Will report back later as to how I get on.

swallowedAfly · 19/05/2013 07:12

dotty yay for 11's no more. they are gone. this morning i am 10.10.8 so still spontaneously losing at the minute. i've lost more in this 2week break than i had in the previous two weeks of fasting Confused can seriously only put it down to the massages unless i have some kind of fat melting illness i don't know about.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/05/2013 07:22

There's an article in The Sun today ( Blush yeah, I know. At least its not the Daily Mail) about the 8 hour diet. I've read it three times and its doesn't actually tell you what you're meant to do, if anyone looks at it - is it 16:8?

EagleRiderDirk · 19/05/2013 07:22

saf please pass any fat melting illness this way Wink
