Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

inlove I hope not, I can't afford to reshoe myself again.

Good morning

Finally into the 8's!

57 kg Smile

I am thrilled.

Your feet are one of the first places to lose water retention, which will make shoes feel loser. I doubt very much you will lose from the length..although I would love to have dainty feet.

ELR · 18/05/2013 07:39

Morning all, pep thanks for wondering but no I didn't get the job. It was interesting though had a group interview and a short 90 second interview. Apparently I wasn't flexible enough due to owning my own business and when they asked why I wanted the job I think I ruined it by commenting on the free family gym membership! Which is the only reason I applied to be honest. Oh well I will just have to carry on paying for someone to torture me with exercise instead!
My mum and two of my friends have now started 5:2 soon everyone will be doing it.

DorisShutt · 18/05/2013 07:44

Yay! Made my 500 calorie target yesterday - and resisted a cornetto Smile

Ended up having a slim-a-soup at about 2.30pm - so an 18 hour fast which I think I'm happy with. I do wonder if part of my over-eating on FD's is due to being at work and getting tired and stressed, then coming home, and my body just slumping, relaxing and so it demands more food.

Going to take some soups with me and then leave it as late as possible so that I get maximum benefits but don't push it too far.

akarucker · 18/05/2013 07:46

Oh dear! A week without weighing myself (I'm usually a daily weigher), and a failed fast = 2lb gain this week. Going away for three days next week on holiday so not good prospects for next week either. Bollocks! OK, today can be a 'good' day, tomorrow a FD, then three days away, & back for a fast.

postmanpatscat · 18/05/2013 07:51

aka sounds like a plan.

welcome to the 8s, barbie !

Hope you all have a good Saturday. I was wide awake before 6 despite having nothing to get up for

Emilythornesbff · 18/05/2013 08:00

Mor ing.
Fasting today.
Craving tea with honey Confused. Will not give in.

ponygirl your post made me well up. You are so brave and strong for leaving. It must have been very hard. Your boys are very fortunate to have you. Thanks

CorrieDale · 18/05/2013 08:05

I am outraged! I have been extremely 'good' this week and the weight has been sliding off. (I know it's just water and waste but it had still felt great!). Anyway last night 9st5.8. This morning 9st6. How???? And I am out at a posh do tonight in a Joan holloway style dress - I needed to be 9st5! Maybe after taekwondo this morning...

Emilythornesbff · 18/05/2013 08:10

9oz?

EagleRiderDirk · 18/05/2013 08:18

Broke my fast yesterday with some crackers. And had the same for brekkie. Think today is going to be a very under day too. Can't bear the prospect of eating. Can hardly drink. If anyone reading this post wonders if fast days are like when you're ill - they're not. Normal fast days feel a lot better than illness fast days.

May get oh to buy me some mashed potato (I'd ask him to make me some, but its not going to be worth it!).

frenchfancy · 18/05/2013 08:19

corrie 1lb really won't make a difference. I'm sure you will look fabulous.

inlovewithchocolate yes to feet shrinking. A few of us have had the same problem. New shoes to go with the new clothes Grin

INeedThatForkOff · 18/05/2013 08:20

Er ... Sorry if this sounds smug given the (temporary Grin) gains just reported, but I've just WI and lost 5 1/2 lbs in my first week of 5:2 Shock Grin Confused. I trust my scales I use the fuckers every day and they're actually saying my water level has actually slightly increased. I didn't fast yesterday so I don't think it's a particularly false low.

I'm amazed. Weight does not drop off me. Ever.

So this week I have drunk wine, eaten cake, chocolate, licorice (mmm) and biscuits, had cheese, bread and a cheeky McDonalds breakfast yesterday pasta (and some healthy stuff in case talkinpeace comes after me Wink), but all in moderation. I've done two strict 500 cal fast which were no problem because I knew that the next day I could break them, and the rest of the time I've eaten between 1900 and 2300 cals Blush tracked with MFP. I am BFing though.

Sorry for my long, emoticon-ridden, navel gazing post. I told myself I'd be happy with. 1lb loss because of the health benefits and so I could eat normally the rest of the time. I'm ecstatic.

My birthday on Weds, so 1lb would be great next week!

ceebeegeebies · 18/05/2013 08:33

just off to work but wanted to post about my fantastic NSV this morning Grin am 5 weeks in and am not weighing myself regularly so no idea what I have lost but...I have gone 2 holes down in my belt in that time Grin Grin DH had to put another hole in my belt this morning. Totally motivating!!

Emilythornesbff · 18/05/2013 08:39

ineedthatforkoff fantastic.

INeedThatForkOff · 18/05/2013 08:41

Thank you.

That's great, ceebeegeebies

CorrieDale · 18/05/2013 08:42

I know - 9oz is pathetic to be in a strop over! It's just it's the first time on 5:2 I've actually weighed more after a fast day than before! I wouldn't have thought it possible! (Still love this WOE though!)

Dotty342kids · 18/05/2013 09:11

Hurrah for ceebeegeebies and Ineedthatforkoff, amazing losses / non scale victories for you both!

I'm out tonight and intend to look fabulous!

Moominlandmidwinter · 18/05/2013 09:23

Morning all!

Had a bit of a blow-out last night (I blame DH Wink). After my mini-fast yesterday, I had toast with Philadelphia and jam, then a couple of apples. Last night, we had fish, chips and mushy peas, a couple of glasses of Yellow Tail Bubbles, then shared a whole box of chocolates with DH! Blush. I didn't even enjoy it all that much, I could really taste the grease on the fish and chips, and the chocolates tasted way too sweet. I thought that after that carb-fest, plus the indulgences the day before, I would have a weigh-in this morning, to see the damage done. I've maintained at 9:7.5. Am very happy with that, as I would have thought it would have 'bounced'.

I've decided to meal plan today, whilst I'm on a NFD, I don't want to go over my TDEE. I've had muesli with an apple, natural yogurt and a teaspoon of honey (379kcal) for breakfast, dinner will be my homemade lasagne with some salad (600kcal), and then for lunch, we've promised the DDs a McDonalds as a treat. I think that I will have a Happy Meal! According to MFP, this will be around 500kcal. Then I'll have milk in my tea, and perhaps a banana as a snack. This will bring me just under my TDEE.

I'm not sure what to do about breaking my fast on Monday. I like to save my 500kcal for my dinner, so that I feel as though I've had something substantial to eat (and I don't wake up hungry in the night!). I usually eat at around 7pm. However, I have to walk to DD1s school with all four DDs in tow, for a residential trip meeting, at 7pm. It's a 3 mile round-trip. DH works shifts, so he will have the car. I will give the girls their tea at about 5.30, but I don't want to eat so early, as I know that I will be hungry later. But I also think that I will be famished if I don't eat until 9pm! I know that others do zero fasts and manage fine, but this is too hardcore for me, especially as I'm still partially breastfeeding. I normally like to eat home-made meals, but am wondering whether to have a banana just before we leave the house, and buy a 350ish kcal ready meal that I can just bung in the microwave when we get back?

Sorry for such a long post!

postmanpatscat · 18/05/2013 09:37

moomin, the banana/ready meal combo sounds like a good plan, or maybe a quick stir fry?

BetsyBell · 18/05/2013 09:53

Forkoff ceebee WHOOP well done Grin

Friday evenings seem to have become my indulgence time - when I eat the things I've been thinking about all week! It works quite well as if I let loose a bit on Friday then I'm better behaved at the weekend. I didn't drink though as I'd bought beer and it turned out I wanted wine, I did manage to put away a rather large amount of brie and crackers and 2 mini fricking magnums though.

However, cheese & chocolate cravings sorted for another week I hope.

Bramblesinafield · 18/05/2013 10:25

Well done ceebee

I hit target yesterday and predictably have bounced up again, but I know I am nearly there! So I plan to aim for a bit under target iykwim before going to maintainance. Whatever that is?!

Went to a clothes party at a friend's last night and was nicely embarrassed by the kind comments (apart from the one from one v honest friend who said that my clothes used to hug and emphasize my stomach but now they skim. Bless her!). Can't believe the change in my figure, really can't.

swallowedAfly · 18/05/2013 10:27

morning all and happy weekend.

my bounce range without fasting now appears to be between 10.11.4 and 10.12.8 which is quite narrow for me. i'm hoping that means that when i start fasting again it won't be too long before i see 10st7 as my new low. will be nice to get into the lower tens bracket and leave the upper tens behind fingers crossed.

my ultimate aim is to be in the 9's and be able to stay there with 10st as a wake up call marker iyswim. i'd love to get back to 9st7 or less but realistically will be happy with 9.12 if i can stay there comfortably. that all still sounds a loooong way off mind.

so next week everyone please kick my arse into getting fasting again. i'm hoping that 2 weeks off without gaining weight means my body is nice and stable and settled at this weight and ready to lose again when i restart

if it works out like that then this might be a bit of a strategy for me each half stone or so to see if i can just maintain for a couple of weeks and give my body a chance to settle and accept the changes.

hope my usual fasting twins are doing ok and maintaining the ten's. anyone else feeling confident they've permanently seen the back of 11's???

Bramblesinafield · 18/05/2013 10:31

Absolutely saf. I started at 11.6 and am now bouncing to 10.6

I aim to get to a lower figure of just over ten. Otherwise my clothes won't fit!

Bramblesinafield · 18/05/2013 10:32

I Ike the idea of the wake up call marker. I think I will make that 10.6, was 10 3.5 yesterday :)

meandmyfour · 18/05/2013 10:50

Hello can I join you all? Such a lovely thread, I've been following your progress for weeks!
I started 5.2 about a month ago and would like to lose half a stone. Have managed two fast days a week for the last four weeks apart from this week when a friend staying meant lots of wine, crisps and the odd meal out. I tried to balance things out once she'd left by eating lunch only on Wednesday and Thursday, therefore having two nearly 24 fasts - not eating from 2pm each of those days. The bouncing around really is qute disheartening as last week it seemed like I'd lost about five pounds since starting but today I'm back up and just showing a two pound loss since starting in mid April.

From reading back through the threads it seems that some (me included) find it hard to trust that this WOE works... I definitely have tried to carry on eating very few calories/missing meals on NFD's and then of course can't sustain it and find myself eating everything insight.

Theres no real point to this post other than to say hi and that as from Monday I'm going to try and trust that if I just keep it simple and stick to the basic rules then it will work.

It seems so easy for some of you and that's so wonderful and encouraging to read - I guess I just need to believe that I can have the same great results.
Happy Saturday everyone xx
