The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done poshvoice and inlovewithchocolate (or should that be inlovewithdrm ) ?!

Tried to have a look at the TDEE calculator in greenegg's post, but cannot as my TalkTalk homesafe settings do not allow me to access pornographic websites Confused What's all that about?

postmanpatscat · 17/05/2013 19:05

TOTM has arrived and I've just eaten SIX jaffa cakes in quick succession...off to the gym to undo the damage now!

Emilythornesbff · 17/05/2013 19:10

Well done poshvoice and inlovewithchocolate

PoshVoice · 17/05/2013 19:20

Hhhhmmmm Jaffa cakes ::drool::

Inlovewithchocolate · 17/05/2013 19:25

Thank you everyone... It's so exciting and motivating. I can imagine the last 5lbs are going to be tough but hey what's the rush. I've learnt so much about healthy eating on this journey and I can't see myself eating any other way. I love this thread I feel like I'm having some sort of an affair as I'm always reading everyone's inspirational threads on here Thanks

Inlovewithchocolate · 17/05/2013 19:32

Inlovewithdrm I like it postman

frenchfancy · 17/05/2013 19:53

Well done PV just think you.are now officially a healthy weight.

ponygirlcurtis · 17/05/2013 20:03

Wow, PV and Inlove - that's so inspirational! Am sitting here finishing off FD4 with my dinner - pasta, chicken, tomatoey sauce and loads of veg. I'm going to make it last me a while, am eating the veg with my fingers, I find that fills me up more. I've been hungry today, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't do it - it's a real revelation to learn that being hungry isn't something to be scared of! Still don't think I could do a full 24hrs though...

PoshVoice · 17/05/2013 20:24

Thanks all, it feels good to be healthy again!

I still have a way to go before I'm an ideal weight but its a marathon and not a sprint.

All my clothes are baggy these days (Madchester style) and I'm really looking forward to having a good splurge clothes shopping in a few weeks

fluffypillow · 17/05/2013 20:45

Well done on all those losses, really amazing Smile

I had 2 successful fasts again this week, thats 8 fasts in total (not that I'm counting Blush ) .
The Tuesday one was the hardest, as it is TOM, and I was sooooooo grouchy, and was wanting something sweet . I stuck to the fast though, and did the 8pm Monday 'til dinner time Tuesday, and felt great the next day.

The numbers keep dropping on the scales daily, which is so encouraging (and bloomin' exciting Grin ) but I won't record my weight loss until Tuesday, which I do each week, incase I bounce!

Great feeling yesterday when a lady who works in my local shop said 'gosh have you lost weight?' I was over the moon! All the diets I have tried over the years, I have had to stick to for months to get comments like that, and I've only been doing 5:2 for just over 3 weeks Grin

I can see in myself I have lost weight, I feel so much lighter. I can do my belt up an extra notch (in fact it could go tighter, but I've run out of holes!) My rings are getting loose too.

I've enjoyed some lovely food today after my fast day yesterday. We had a fresh veggie pizza for dinner , followed by a chocolate pudding! Lunch was a gorgeous piece of stilton and crackers, followed by a chunk of swiss roll. What diet? I'm on the 5:2!!!!!!

I thought when I started this that I don't want to be 'fat and Forty' as I hit the 'big 40' in December. I now feel confident that I can achieve that. In fact, I don't think I could give up on 5:2 now even if I wanted to, as I'm finding it really addictive Blush It's not boring like so many diets I have tried.

Have a good weekend everyone x

fluffypillow · 17/05/2013 20:47

Oh, forgot to add, DH started the same time as me, and had lost a staggering 1 stone, 4lbs!!!!! He has a really physical job, which has helped, but wow!

ceebeegeebies · 17/05/2013 21:08

Well done everyone Smile some really inspirational posts today - both scale and NSV

I am over 2 and a half stone away from having a healthy BMI Sad but as another poster has said 'rome wasn't built in a day'.

anyway dilemma for you all...I am going abroad for the first time in 8 years this summer. Have been buying holiday clothes to try and spread the cost out but am now suddenly faced with the possibility that everything I have bought is going to be too big but I don't want to leave it to the last minute to buy stuff as the shops move to winter stuff by the end of august...what to do???

mttum · 17/05/2013 21:10

Snacks are the devil's work! Angry
One slice home made cake, one jam sandwich, two ginger nuts and two TINY boxes of snack raisins consumed in the car while on longish journey - 753 cals!! Luckily it's NFD today (relieved sigh)

Talkinpeace · 17/05/2013 21:36

ceebee
when your size is changing, charity shops are your friend
you can buy several sizes and styles all for the price of one piece of dodgy stuff from Bangladesh

mttum
too right.
other long standing posters will tell you that I have a zero tolerance to snacks!!!

mttum · 17/05/2013 21:54

In my defence it was gone 6 and I was over two hours from home and supper. Still managed to go over TDEE by only 28 cals tho so could have been worse. Sorry tip, I won't do it again Blush

mttum · 17/05/2013 21:56

And I agree about the charity shops; everyone wins except the clothes retailers - result!

peplum41 · 17/05/2013 22:05

Hi all, still here. Had a week off because mum was visiting and she is one of these types to not "get" fasting, so left it be. Got a weeks worth of thread to plough through but enjoying it! What is this squat challenge? Why are full body massages busting through plateaus? Why is Postmanpat'scat still losing weight? Did ELR get that job? Are biscuits the work of the devil himself? (remember,Jaffa cakes are not biscuits)
Has Peplum been at the Wineagain?

Today was an attempt to fast and I lasted out until 6pm when talked myself into a minifast. It was a hard fast. Lots of sickly hunger pangs but you've got to take the rough with the smooth.

ponygirlcurtis Flowers on the years anniversary re the sod you escaped from. Hope you feel safe now. One day in the future, you will be strolling down the street with your strapping boys and see that pathetic old creature and think "hah"loser!

postmanpatscat · 17/05/2013 22:06

ceebee can you buy stretchy stuff? Jersey shorts, vest tops, maxi dresses with elastic in the back etc? I find summer holiday clothes get so little wear that they last years, even though I'll be a stone lighter this summer than I was last year (notwithstanding jaffa cake consumption Blush )

Barbie1 · 17/05/2013 22:16

First week of attempting 4:3 and I have to admit to enjoying it!

My period is due and I always add a few lb's so I doubt I will lose much but I feel so much better.

I fasted today but still managed my daily 2 like run and did it faster than ever.

I enjoy this way of eating Smile

Just 500g short of being into the 8's which I have been aiming for.

In total I have been bouncing around losing and gaining 4lbs since starting this 3 weeks ago, but that's ok...I just feel happier (probably due to less sugar!) so that's a good reason to carry on.

Happy weekend everyone

mttum · 17/05/2013 22:17

Are Jaffa cakes one of the 5 a day?

Barbie1 · 17/05/2013 22:17

2 like? Hmm clearly that should say 2 mile

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 22:17

Getting the munchies really badly. I'm not even remotely hungry as dinner wasn't even that long ago. I just want to eat something!

But I shan't. Thank you mttum for your warning story Grin

Barbie1 · 17/05/2013 22:18

Of course Jaffa cakes are, they have orange in them don't they? Wink

Talkinpeace · 17/05/2013 22:25

OMG
DH and DS out this evening watching Star Trek, DD out doing DofE
so I did a bundle of tax and CT returns this evening
BUT
have utterly stuffed my face with nom nom Punjabi takeaway : may have to undo a button on my jeans.
BUT that is why I eat little all week so I get to enjoy the weekend
which is why this WOE works.

ponygirl
just so you know : the relationships board is one of the most poisonous places I've ever seen. If you and your kids want to walk heads held high ASAP, this board and the work / freelance boards are the place to be to let off steam.

Inlovewithchocolate · 18/05/2013 07:18

My shoes are to big for. Can you really lose weight from your feet Confused. Another 1lb down really? I don't lose for weeks and then I seem to be losing on a daily basis... 4lbs to go.....have a great weekend everyone.
