The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks Talkinpeace - I find my TDEE is really quite a lot, reckon I'll go the wine (and cake) route at the weekends!

Talkinpeace · 17/05/2013 13:46

mam29
I've just skim read back through the recent bits of the thread.
May I suggest a change in approach?

Try a no sugar week.
so NOTHING with sugar in the ingredients, and no booze Monday to Friday.
Then do a no snacking week.
Breakfast : something small and high protein
Lunch : soup or salad or a healthy sarnie - NO CRISPS
Supper : something high protein - NO BOOZE, NO SNACKS
Then do a 5:2 week
But again, restrict alcohol to the weekend and give up snacks for ever

because
you do not seem to be giving your digestion a break.

One of the reasons that fasting (all variants) is good for your health is that the breaks in eating give your digestive tract time to vacuum into the corners and that makes it work better.

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 13:46

aka I know that feeling when you cave and have something and then after you know it so wasn't worth it.

Dotty342kids · 17/05/2013 14:31

ooooh, have to share something marvellous with you all Smile
So, as stated up thread I went to Monsoon with some vouchers today. Normally a 12 top and a 14 bottom. Picked up some things to try on in those sizes.
Size 14 bottoms literally fell off me! Asked assistant to get the 12's. None on the shop floor so she brought me the 10's as she said they were quite generously sized. They fitted!!! However, were overly snug on my chubby thighs. When she found me a pair of 12's in the storeroom they fit comfortably on the legs and will be fine on waist with a belt Smile
Similar story on top half... tried on the 12, felt it was a bit shapeless / big so ended up with the 10.
10!!! I cannot tell you how long it's been since I've been in a 10 for anything.......
So then I celebrated with a nice cheese n onion pasty and a Mars Bar ice cream Grin

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 14:46

Nice one Dotty I bet that felt great :)

obrigada · 17/05/2013 15:00

Just marking my place, aiming to fast Tuesday and Thursday next week, total newbie here so be patient with me:) My plan is to count 16 hours from my last food on Monday evening before I have my "brekkie" and then stick to 500 cals if possible on Tuesday. Have a feeling I might have to adjust the figure of 500 upwards to start off and work my way down over the weeks. Does this sound ok?

ponygirlcurtis · 17/05/2013 15:00

Hello all - well done to everyone on their losses! I haven't weighed myself yet, having been doing this for about 10/11 days now but have no scales in the house. But I do feel like I've lost something, so am desperate to find out!

Fourth fast day today, was struggling a bit and nearly had my soup at 12pm. But then a friend called, and we chatted for ages, so got handily distracted. Had it at 2.15pm instead. With my dinner, I'll be on about 380cals, so enough left to add extra veg with dinner, a couple of cups of tea with milk, and maybe even a wee handful of popcorn later.

I was also going to ask the question the Pearly asked, I seem to be averaging between 1400-1600cals on NFD, although my TDEE is around 1750. Even on weekend days, with wine, ice cream, etc, I'm not reaching 1750 (so far). I worry that I'm not eating enough - I know myself, and my temptation is to go lower-cal on NFD's too, and I am trying to watch what I eat on these days. But I'm also trying to curb my emotional eating, so that's part of it too, being more controlled generally and not snacking like it's going out of fashion. Today is one year since I did a midday flit to leave my abusive husband, with my two boys in tow, so I know my emotional eating has gotten out of hand. I was liking the fact that I seem to be more in control of it now, but should I be eating more?Am I going to come a cropper doing this? I am enjoying this WOE so far, and don't want to ruin it for myself.

Hope everyone has a good Friday.

EagleRiderDirk · 17/05/2013 15:27

Great nsv dotty

I struggle to eat up to tree now I've switched to more healthier living. I was worried to start with but I've realised that it'll change week to week depending which meat were having (we do the buy a big joint and spread it through the week thing). Ive just decided that all it means is I can have wine when I like and occasional choccie bars

EagleRiderDirk · 17/05/2013 15:28

Tdee even

frenchfancy · 17/05/2013 15:58

Hi mam so it sounds like you are so determined to get down to 500 cals that if you fail you try again next day.

My advice is not to. So if you decide to fast say Monday, Wednesday, Friday next week, but on Monday you end up at 800 cals, don't worry. Eat normally on Tuesday then try again on Wednesday. Many people take a few weeks to get down to 500 cals on fast days. It does not mean you have failed.

Have a good weekend and enjoy some guilt free eating until Monday.

mam29 · 17/05/2013 16:07

Thanks french fancy and everyone else who offered advice.
had sucessful day yesterday so decided to break todays fast day

will eat normally over weekend.

got confused as others said they were doing consecutive fast days dident realise they had to be spaced out.

yes was hard on myself monday as really struggled but was day 1.

I dont think i could do zero fasts.

will keep trying wih it next week and expect it get easier.

wondering what to treat myself for tea tonight?

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 16:15

dotty when you said about thinking about trying on 12s I thought to myself "I'll bet the 12s are fine and maybe too big" - you've done so much better than you thought Grin and really goes to show that you've got to look a whole lot further than the scales to see how far you've come. Fan-bloody-tastic stuff!

If you're struggling to eat up to TDEE and find that you need to eat a bit more, nuts (preferably raw if you don't want salt-bloat) are fantastically nutritious and calorie laden. Out of anything I could be eating I miss them most of all on fast days.

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 16:19

mam I don't ever do consecutive fasts and I never do zero fasts, yet I have lost loads. People going that bit further are doing it as a personal challenge having found 5:2 easy. No new starters do it that way and not everyone feels the need to change it up. Read the OP if you're not sure to remind yourself.

Emilythornesbff · 17/05/2013 16:28

mam I too struggled this week. Monday was fine but I tried to do 4:3 and caved on Wednesday, so ended up just skipping breakfast (no bad thing) and having broth for supper but my lunch would have been well over 500 cals. So I felt bad and tried again yesterday and failed. It was disheartening. Todayi am eating "normally".
Tomorrow I will fast. Then 5:2 next week.

I never count calories on a NFD because I CBA and I did one zero fast but ate all the carbs in London the next day so I won't be doing tat again. Grin

I think I saw somewhere that in a (admittedly small) study the ppl on 4:3 lost no more than those on 5:2. But I could be making that up to make myself feel better mistaken.

Emilythornesbff · 17/05/2013 16:29

Ay dotty

Talkinpeace · 17/05/2013 16:35

mam29
please remember that old hands like me have been fasting since last September and I personally was not very big to begin with : I always skip breakfast so that's 16 hours. Going the extra few was not a big jump.

For those who are learning how to eat sensibly for the first time in a long time, just stopping snacks and going from supper to lunch without food is a GREAT start.

ponygirlcurtis
an interesting thing to check is what your TDEE would be if you were totally sedentary : aim to not go below that - so if needs be have a large glass of milk here and there.
BUT
the joy of this WOE is that it gives control which works for everybody.

The other thing I love about it is that on a fast day we can all compare menus and they will be similar
newcomers
old hands
thin
larger
young
less young
so when you tell me your 500 calorie day, we are the same.
Mine is a gallon of tea, a tub of fresh soup and a piece of fruit!

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 16:37

emily That study is from the 5:2 fast diet forum

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 16:39

Hi mam I'm glad you've decided not to fast today, you should even allow yourself a treat or two over the weekend.

Plan your days for next week but try not to worry too much.

Forget about consecutive days, or zero fasts. Those few of us that have done them have done so just to mix things up a bit when we've perhaps hit a plateau or something. Certainly not something I even considered for the first few months of this woe.

Enjoy your weekend.

Dotty342kids · 17/05/2013 16:49

Thanks Betsy for your support, and everyone else on here. It's so lovely to have you all to share irritations, frustrations and successes with Smile

ponygirlcurtis · 17/05/2013 17:01

Talkinpeace - that's what my TDEE is already at!! Grin I work from home, at my laptop, so I don't move much during the day at all. The only exercise I currently get is walking the school run, but I've been avoiding even that lately because I didn't feel up to it. Blush Just too down to get out the house much. But I do feel a bit more positive now (hence starting to address my eating ishooos) so am trying to get out walking a bit more.

swallowedAfly · 17/05/2013 17:13

hello, hello.

another lovely full body massage today but it's pretty much end of term for the students so that will be the last super cheap indulgence for a while.

haven't eaten yet today but doubt i'll curtail my cals when i do eat. next week i will get back to the fasting but i hope it reassures people that i've had 2 weeks off and haven't piled weight back on. this morning i was up a bit but still below my previous sticking point that i thought i was stuck with forever. this would seem to imply the weight loss is genuine and that my body has adapted to the lower weight rather than the usual story of diets.

it is also great that i haven't felt too stressed by the time off or like i'm doing something really naughty. the reality is that the 5:2 aspect is fairly arbitrary - if you want to do 6:1 or 4:3 or whatever else then fine if it works for you and your goals. there is no magic must obey rules a-z and the minute you don't you will lose the conditional gains you had made side to this ime.

mam - i used to live in a muslim country and was studying islam and several wise friends had the expression 'come hard to allah and allah will come hard to you'. i'm not a religious person but the sentiment is massively true ime - you come hard and rigid and overly determined to something and you'll get hard and difficult back in return. come gently and flexibly and that's what you will get back. take it easy! all it has to do is turn in the other direction and keep going that way so do the minimum required to make that turn and enjoy the gentle progress. rome wasn't built in a day and all that and extremes don't achieve much imho.

Inlovewithchocolate · 17/05/2013 18:30
