The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Can I join you all? You are all doing so well. I fasted Monday and yesterday and found that very easy, eating days have been okay and I have lost 5lbs (need to lose 4st!). I find breaking the fast hard as I feel dizzy when I wake up in the morning after a fast. Is this normal and does it become regulated? I appreciate we are all different but just wondered if anybody else had experienced this. I saw Mimi Spencer (in passing, she is not my mate or anything!) and she really does look amazing.

INeedThatForkOff · 17/05/2013 09:50

FIFI, I felt awful the morning after my first fast (nauseous, weak) but this time I feel really clear headed. I reckon it'll pass.

akarucker · 17/05/2013 10:02

BVB YIPIEE! Well done!

MelanieCheeks · 17/05/2013 10:19

Had a lovely normal eating day yesterday - was with my sister at the Balmoral Show. Her family breeds goats, so we had fun chatting to the producers of goats milk cheese and fudge, as well as an enterprising chap who uses the otherwise surplus male kids to make burgers, meatballs and fajitas. Over the Womens Institute tea'n'buns, she was asking me how I managed to look so well, so I told her about 5:2 and she's thinking of starting next week.

Then we went shappin', and I bought a size 8 M&S Twiggy jacket (an 8! Yippeee!), and I also passed on to sis a lovely jacket that I'd bought in Australia a few years ago, but which is just too baggy on me now. So, one out one in (in case DH is reading this and ensuring I'm sticking to my clothes-and-shoes buying policy)

Welcome new arrivals, well done to all those succesful losers this week, and hang in there those stuck on the plateaux (is that spelled right?)

Yes it was me who said "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". One of my most oft-quoted mantras, both at work and at home.

NoForkNKnife · 17/05/2013 10:43

A loss! 2.5lbs in a week (but I actually went up another 2lbs over weekend so possibly more?).
Very happy. Just what I needed.

And for the first time on a 'diet' I can forget about it for the weekend and not feel guilty.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/05/2013 10:57

Hurrah NoFork! Doris, 9lb in two weeks? That's an amazing loss, and here I am chuffed about my 5 in 3. Very encouraging to read all these.

Measured waist today. I think I've lost an inch, although so saggy post baby I neveR quite know whether I'm measuring right.

mam29 · 17/05/2013 11:18

I do take on board everyones advice and

started diet monday

but dident keep to 500
tried again tusday dident keep to 500.

so felt like failed a bit know I shouldent just found it harder than I thourght.

wed was normal days eating I estimate 1500 cals but in reality could have been higher as had

1 bottle beer
2bowls cereal.
cheese sandwich.
few biscuits
and one of 2 gu choc desserts at 199 cals each they were tiny but tasty.
1pack of crisps.

I dident actually weigh myself until thur.

Thiking scales outside house maybe better as have to walk there and wont obsessivly check as boots scales measures bmi as well as weight.

Had good fast day yesterday providing bananas did not push me over.

was planning another fast day today as then have 2true fast days.

but weekend off no calorie counting and few treats:)

was planning on doing 4,3 so next week will have 3fast days probably mon, wed and friday and 4days off.

I do think if i say overindulged too much on non fast days I would probably decrease the weekly carorie defecit.

are most of you eating 2000cals on days off or not counting?

just been learning curve for me this week and next week feel more confident get it a bit better.

Im not planning on living on 500cals for every day of week.

I guess will know next week if it works and will adjust accordingly so if to eat more on non fast days will do that.

I am just trying to make healthier choices so

less binging on choc
eat more fruit and veg
drink more water
cut down on coffee.

Had 1peice toast today and 2coffees.
thinking might come off fast today and treat myself for lunch but still eat moderatly and not overdo it but only managed 500cal fast day this week which was yesterday as mon and tue were over.

Well done on everyones losses.

ElizaCBennett · 17/05/2013 11:21

No loss for me today Sad despite two 36 liquid only fasts! My clothes are definitely looser though, and am getting lots of complimentary comments.

Oh well, next fast is Monday so will enjoy the weekend, good luck to those fasting today

mam29 · 17/05/2013 11:28

well done eliza think inches maybe better measure than weight as thats determines how clothes fit.For me I hate my pot belly tummy the rest of me not too bad as boobs shrunk since gave up breastfeeding.

LickTheSpoon · 17/05/2013 11:55

Amazing results Betsy Prawn Doris & Southeast - and any other losers I missed! Well done.

While i sometimes think it's a good thing that I have no scales here (no obsessive weighing, no down days if I have gains or plateaus), on the other hand I want to be able to report awesome losses like you guys (or at least it would be reassuring to have proof of whether it is working!) But waistbands are feeling a little looser after just two weeks.

Enjoying fast day here bizarrely. That sounds weird to be saying...

Have a fab weekend everyone!

ELR · 17/05/2013 12:18

Morning all, well done everyone and yay betsy for getting to the 9's was hoping to join you but sadly gained 2lbs this week!!
I feel thinner though and have lost another 1/2 inch of my waist, hips and each thigh so not sure what's going on with the weigh in! So now up to 10st3!!

akarucker · 17/05/2013 12:18

There are some days that fast days just ain't gonna happen...she says whilst brushing the biscuit crumbs off her clothes

akarucker · 17/05/2013 12:19

What happened to my delete?? I think you get the picture...

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 12:26

aka, I also took a late decision to make today an NFD instead of the fast day it was supposed to be. No biscuits though, but a nice brekkie of scrambled eggs, ham and strawberries.

I'm determined to hold off on the 'treats' though until the weekend.

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 12:26

Weekend starts at 5 today right? Wink

DorisShutt · 17/05/2013 12:32

Quick! Slim-a-soup for lunch or not?

I haven't had food since 8pm last night (so 16 hour fast so far) and have dinner planned for 7.30pm tonight.

I'm wondering if grabbing a slim-a-soup would possibly reduce the desire to gorge tonight?

Thoughts? Not planning to have it or not! until near 1pm so opinions appreciated!

ElizaCBennett · 17/05/2013 12:40

doris how about a hot Bovril? Only about 15 cals (?) might need to check but quite low anyway and very satisfying

ElizaCBennett · 17/05/2013 12:42

Wow, apparently Bovril cube is only 2cals!

DorisShutt · 17/05/2013 12:51

I don't know if I like Bovril! Blush

Don't have it in the house - lowest calorie thing is the soup...

akarucker · 17/05/2013 12:58

itsa now I feel guilty! Your fast fail sounds much nicer than mine. I shouldn't have caved to biscuits...they weren't even nice ones!!

erikab922 · 17/05/2013 12:58

Well my DH and I have survived our first week of 5:2 and I am kicking myself that I didn't start it sooner. As my husband said last night, on your NFD you don't pig out on crap like you'd have thought you would because you don't want to undo all the good work you did on your fast day.

I weighed myself on Sunday and just for fun I weighed myself this morning (Friday) just to see if anything was happening. Crikey I'm down 6 pounds! I've had a terrible cold this week and Tuesday I ate a whole chocolate bar and an ice cream sandwich so it is possible to lose weight but not completely deprive yourself.

I think my goal of losing 49lbs (sounds so much less daunting than 50lbs) by April of next year is in reach for the first time in 20 years!

Moominlandmidwinter · 17/05/2013 13:02

Hi all, mam, I'm also concerned about you. Please don't feel that we are ganging up on you though! It does sound as though you are trying to do a VLCD, as others have said. I have tried to do these before, and make me feel very miserable! It is easy to see quick results, initially, but very hard to sustain in the long-run, and in my experience, the weight goes back on. I'm doing two days of 500 kcal, the rest of the time, I'm trying to stick to around 1800-2000kcal. I have told myself, that if I have a bad fast day, and go over by a couple of hundred Kcal, I won't beat myself up, but have my NFD as normal on the ensuing days, and come the next fast day, I will try to stick to the 500kcal. It's not a race, nobody is making me do this and setting time limits. Please be kind to yourself and not beat yourself up when you have a 'bad' fast day.

I've ended up doing a mini-fast today. I didn't fancy breakfast this morning, and as I knew that I would be out all morning (had to nip into work, am returning after maternity leave in 4.5 weeks!), decided that I would start the day with lunch instead. I had quite an indulgent NFD yesterday- delicious lunch at the spa, wine, meal and dessert prepared by DH when I got home, plus some chocolate from the DDs Smile. We will probably be having a takeaway tonight, and I want to be able to enjoy that, guilt-free. I'm finding that I'm actually enjoying my meals properly now, rather than grazing all day, and not even really tasting what I was eating.

PearlyGrey · 17/05/2013 13:19

Hello everyone - first time I've ever picked up the guts to post!

I'm on my first week of 5:2, and my second fast day. So far have been finding it fairly easy to stick to 500, been keeping busy and coming up with lots of small, interesting meals with 'treat' ingredients (like prawns etc).

I'm a bit worried I may not be eating enough in between though, probably about 1200-1600 depending if it's a gym day or not. Should I up that? My initial plan was to aim around 1200/1500 on the weekdays when I'm not fasting, 500 on the fast days then whatever I fancy on the weekends. Is that going to be enough though?

By the way, there's so much good advice on here, it's really inspirational Smile

Talkinpeace · 17/05/2013 13:21

Pearlygrey
Welcome.
Non fast days : work out your TDEE from the link in Greeneggs opening post and try to stick to that.
OR do what many of us end up doing which is eat a bit under TDEE in the week to leave space for Wine at weekends.

DorisShutt · 17/05/2013 13:22

Just caught up with mam. While I have no clue what the diet you are attempting will do; I can say that I'm losing weight even though I've gone over on my FD's this week by a few hundred calories. (Only a pound but still!)

The one thing that I think that I've picked up is that your body thinks you are in a famine situation so it burns some fat to help; then eating your TDEE stops the process and maintains the loss, hence the reason that it needs to be non-consecutive days. Otherwise you end up with your body permanently going into conservation mode and potentially burning off muscle; then trying to restore the fat when you do eat.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a dietician so the above could be utter tripe!
