Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

second fast of the week done. Fasted all day and for dinner I had a chicken breast cooked in the george foreman ,topped with harrissa paste and a tablespoon of grated parmesan ( which was flashed under grill for last 5 mins until it went melty / bubbly mmmm..) with a mountain of roasted meditteranean veg. and 1 square of very dark chocolate with my coffee.(350 cals for that lot or thereabouts)
Todays fast was a bit harder than usual because I was at home on a day off( find I sail through the fast days at work).
Will WI in morning.. Ive resisted the scales this week as well( usually an obsessive daily weigher) but decided not to look for a week !
Looking forward to putting on my new smaller sized dress for a charity dinner tomorrow evening ..there will be 3 courses and lots of wine!
Have a great weekend all

Itsaboatjack · 16/05/2013 23:46

Well done all today's fasters.

I've been on an NFD, which I actually tend to struggle with more than the fast days, so this week I have been focusing on those a bit more. So I managed another successful NFD today, 3 healthy meals, no snacks, and I even forgot to have the glass of wine I had allowed myself for this evening.

Another fast day planned for tomorrow and then I will allow myself some 'treats' at the weekend.

On another note, I just saw an advert on tv for a programme next Thurs night about the fat gene and whether it relly exists. On ch4 if anyone's interested.

LickTheSpoon · 17/05/2013 00:29

Spacegirl I am in a similar place to you 6 and a half month DS, BFing but started solids. Have only been trying this WOE for 2 weeks but good news is I haven't noticed any drop in milk supply - if anything I think I've been able to express more!! I think key is drinking lots (water not gin!) and being sensible - if I felt terrible/faint on a FD I would just have something extra. But that hasn't happened yet.

Read somewhere that it takes 26 calls to produce every ounce of milk. I enjoy thinking of that stat when I'm expressing/feeding!!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/05/2013 00:30

Southeast, I suppose we notice the people who differ from us more than those who match.

Mam, are you having some normal eating days in between fasts? It reads like you're trying to stick to very low cals every day?

frenchfancy · 17/05/2013 06:41

I second tortoises concerns mam. What you are doing is a VLC diet non intermittent fasting. The important word is intermittent, you need to have some normal eating days. I have no doubt that you will lose weight doing what you are doing, but it is not sustainable in the same way IF is and it is very likely to make you miserable.

INeedThatForkOff · 17/05/2013 07:03

mam, your posts are frustrating as you don't seem to be raking anyone's advice. Please just eat 2000 cals today. You haven't got the hang of 5:2 but you must have a calorie deficit. Why don't you just try again next week?

INeedThatForkOff · 17/05/2013 07:04

Raking? Bloody phone!

Southeastdweller · 17/05/2013 07:11

Morning everyone.

I've lost 2 and a half pounds this week so now my total loss is 21lbs over fifteen weeks. Feels like I've done it by barely trying! I love how easy this WOL is.

I'm thrilled because I've hardly done any exercise due to being exhausted from work, plus on my second fast I ate alot of biscuits, probably going near 1,000 calories that day.

More clothes are getting looser so I think another jaunt to Westfield is on the cards for next week Smile.

Enjoy your weekends all!

DorisShutt · 17/05/2013 07:14

Only 1lb lost today, but it's still coming off - despite high calorie intake on fasting days due to guests and hunger, so I'm actually quite pleased. I'm also a bit bloated due to that time of the month coming up.

But I'm not discouraged actually - it's still 9lbs in two weeks which is a solid loss.

Doing my third fast of the week today to try to compensate for tomorrow night and our planned Eurovison blowout and going to try to stick more rigidly to calories on fast days - I think I don't get as hungry if I don't eat carbs on fast days so going to try that tactic. It will be really hard though as I adore carbs, but I can eat them every other day so it's not terrible!

INeedThatForkOff · 17/05/2013 07:19

Well done Southeast and Doris.

Fast two over for me and I feel fine, none of the nausea I had last time. I admit I've been weighing every day to try and get a feel for the bounces (which have happened) but am confident I can report a good loss tomorrow Smile

Prawntoast · 17/05/2013 07:37

Morning all, just over a pound and a half off, I'm within 200gs of the 9's, so near and yet so far, next week! Made it through the night so did do my first ever 36 hour fast. Don't think I'd do one again as found it quite difficult to get to sleep but at least now know that exercise is perfectly doable on a fast day.

Have a good weekend all!

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 08:09

Good morning! Today's the day for a fleeting glimpse of single figures on the scales! 9st13.4! Grin Grin

I know it won't be there again for a while but it's there now!

(Well not now because I've had breakfast)

postmanpatscat · 17/05/2013 08:13

Well done betsy prawn doris and southeast Grin

betsy it will be back!

Burnt my tongue on the chocolate in my pain au chocolat this morning, that will teach me!!

monster54 · 17/05/2013 08:14

Well just what I knew...

Back down to where I was 2 weeks ago 11st 3lbs. Urggghhh frustrating!!!

I even did 4:3 this week. Just need to suck it up and hope it moves again soon. How long did people find that plateaus lasted? Its funny cos my cloothes feel different!!

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 08:16

Adding myself to the list of people concerned about mam's approach. I hope you'll listen to us on here - we want you to succeed but you need to take the advice given. Please don't fast today - you had a successful fast yesterday but a low calorie day every day this week. Normal eating - somewhere around 2000 calories - until Monday please.

ChesterDrawers · 17/05/2013 08:21

Fasting again today - last one til Wednesday. Feeling fine at the minute. Got quorn chilli in slow cooker for tea so won't need to think about that. Only stumbling block is I am out at soft play this morning and will be tough to stick to black coffee!

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 08:24

Thank you PPC - may actually try to not weigh myself for a week. [laughs at self, already know that's not going to happen!]

Whoop - well done Prawn, Doris & Southeast Flowers for us all :D

monster Mid March to mid April was pretty much a plateau for me - lost less than a lb overall. However, since then, weight's been dropping off again (y'know via some good 5:2 and a fair bit of exercise! No 4:3 or zero fasts for me though). But I did lose inches - which is better really isn't it.

Itsaboatjack · 17/05/2013 08:25

mam I think maybe decide for next week which days your fast days are going to be. Plan these days and work out the calories in advance so you know what you can have for your 500 cals. If you go over that's ok, just try and hit your 500 on your next fast day, but eat normaly the next day. You seem to be disappointed in not being perfect. Someone put a quote up earlier up thread, it went something like 'don't let being perfect be the enemy of being good'.

You really need to go easier on yourself and look at what you have done well and not focus so much on what went wrong.

Enjoy your weekend.

monster54 · 17/05/2013 08:34

Thanks besty so poss another couple of weeks bouncing around to do yet!

Well done on seeing those 9's...I'm absolutely desperate to see the 10's and is just making this stall even more painful as I'm so close.....sad face!

BetsyBell · 17/05/2013 08:37

monster but when you get there you'll never look back :) And you'll forget the pain of this bit!

Dotty342kids · 17/05/2013 09:06

Yay Betsy that's brilliant! I felt just the same when I got into the 10's finally. Today I glimpsed 10st 10, although scales eventually settled at 10st 11 but still, it's those glimpses that keep us going!

Off to shops today to spend a nice Monsoon voucher that I've had hanging around for a while. Don't know whether to be brave and try on some size 12 bottoms or not to do that in case they don't fit and it depresses me!

EagleRiderDirk · 17/05/2013 09:10

Today is a planned fast day, which is lucky as I'm so ill that it would be a fast day regardless. Explains the random shakiness I had yesterday. Weighed in this am, but am unsure how much of the lost weight is illness related. Expecting a plateau next week. And I've decided I wont be disappointed by that (yes I'm trying to convince myself Wink)

mam I agree with the others on here, you're going too hard at yourself. Please have a few normal eating days and try again next week.

Emilythornesbff · 17/05/2013 09:12

Just had two failed postings.
Basically failed at fasting yesterday.

Better planning was required. My NFD really should be a NFD IYSWIM.
I also think 5:2 is better than 4:3 for me (a bit obvious perhaps).

So NFD today and a possible fast tomorrow.

NoForkNKnife · 17/05/2013 09:39

Wow! Congrats betsy prawn doris and southeast! I'm not at all Envy!

The headaches yesterday have given way to a horrible sore throat. Haven't been ill with the baby yet and am no petrified of giving it to her (10 weeks old today-but 39 weeks gest).

Haven't weighed myself yet (need to express first!) and in actually really really scared. What if I don't see a loss?! I NEED to see a loss today.

Mam we started this about the same time. After 3 fasts, I have not hit 500cals or under. 2 came out around 600 and yesterday was more like 800 by the time I finished. Every other day I've been sticking to around 1600. I think for most of us it's hard to hit 500 and takes a whole to get used to it. But if you don't eat normally inbetween FD then it defeats the object of this diet. Good luck x

INeedThatForkOff · 17/05/2013 09:47

I have just relished a bacon and egg muffin and a hash brown completely guilt free for the first time ever Smile. I know I can have a light lunch to balance it, then eat normally this evening, and be well within my TDEE. I love this WOE!
