Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MrsArch don't feel down, there are some on here who have a lot to lose and someone who has lost 4 stone.
If you are finding the fast days easy, why not try alternate day fasting for quicker results (or 4:3)? When my weight loss slowed down after many months I switched to 4:3 and started to lose again so it does make a difference. ADF is quite popular on here too.

swallowedAfly · 16/05/2013 15:15

went for lunch with a friend - worth the calories. i may fast tomorrow or i may just leave it till next week. will see how i feel after my massage in the afternoon.

kind of hoping i get more massage induced magic weight loss.

mrsarch - i found that even a stone in my breasts hadn't lost anything at all. i think i am now beginning to notice a tiny bit of difference. we all store and lose it differently. glad you are seeing results - a new clothes size every 5wks would be great wouldn't it?

Dotty342kids · 16/05/2013 15:29

Emily I fasted on the travelling days when I want away before Easter. As it was me driving us all up to The Lake District it wasn't to hard, then had a nice healthy dinner once we'd arrived / got back home at the end.

Brambles that's excellent - bet it felt good to get there! I'm partly hoping for a dress size drop, and partly not as I've been either a comfortable or uncomfortable size 14 for years and have lots of nice clothes. I'm now at the point where they fit comfortably again, and look nice, but if I drop down a size nothing will fit and not quite sure what I'll do then Smile And no, buying an entire new wardrobe is NOT an option. I may not get there at any rate. I've been a 12/14 my whole adult life and think that's what suits my frame and look.

silverbeetle · 16/05/2013 15:57

MrsArch don't give up you are doing brilliantly. Loose clothes and a smaller bum, that's really good Smile. My friend was a size 24-26 and has lost over 2 stone on this WOL in 3 months, she looks so much better, although she says she can't see it herself. But then we are always so self critical aren't we?

I wouldn't put much faith in sizing in shops even good old M&S, I tried 3 different styles of work trousers on in Wallis yesterday and was a different size in each one. Really frustrating as you never know what size to pick up, didn't buy any in the end as I was too hot and bothered.
The real measure is how much looser your old clothes are.

Agree with SAF top half didn't change much size wise until after the first stone and a half. Now unfortunately although the back fat is disappearing so are my boobs. Hey ho, that's what padded bras are for.
Sending

BetsyBell · 16/05/2013 16:26

Lickthespoon 2 full water bottles (small ones so easy to hold!) will do. Your name is really making me think about cake mix [fast day]

MrsA Flowers Sorry you're down (with plenty good reason), still, jeans being looser shows that this WOE is working. You won't hate that person in the mirror forever I hope. I've noticed how much more critical I am of myself since I started paying attention - before I started losing weight it didn't matter what I looked like or which bits jiggled (all of it) because I didn't want to think about it and I was avoiding thinking about it. Now I'm actively working towards improvements I notice everything and question what I should be happy with. It sounds a bit contradictory (and a bit self-absorbed) but it's perhaps a necessary process to get to where we need to be?

Sorry, bit of a meander there but just trying to analyse a thought process I hadn't considered much yet!

invinoveritas51 · 16/05/2013 17:18

Have been lurking for months (since February) and have become addicted to this site - the advice and support is incredible and the weight losses truly inspirational. I started at 13.2 and am now on an 11.11-11.13 "bounce" (which is way to much for a 5'4 bod even allowing for heavy build). Like so many of you who have tried every diet in the book, I am finding this one so more user friendly - I love it's flexibility and the fact that I can still have whatever I want just not every day and in vast quantities. I have a long way to go but for the first time ever, am confident I will make it. Thanks for being there for lurkers like me!! Smile

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 17:28

Thanks dotty good idea. Although I won't be driving Smile

I have not fasted well today. Just had a handful of unsalted nuts after my broth and five oven chips!!

INeedThatForkOff · 16/05/2013 17:32

Just half an hour left until I can snaffle my 500 cals. Fast 2 nearly in the bag Smile

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 17:36

I think it's because I know ppl are coming later and also I "semi fasted" yesterday.
Might need to chuck an extra fast in this week.

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 17:38

Well done fork

Prawntoast · 16/05/2013 18:43

I would echo what others have said here MrsA, going down a size on the bottom does show it's working. I have slimmed down far more on my bottom half than top half, I have noticed that my arms are thinner and back fat is going but the boobs are still the same size, I'd quite like them to reduce a bit as I don't want to be too out of proportion.

Interestingly I'm on a fast day today and decided to go out on my bike when I came home this evening, I don't exercise on fast days as I have always thought I'd have no energy. Just got back and I am feeling less hungry than when I went out. I'm not sure why that is. I am toying with trying to go through to the morning without food, I probably crack in an hour or 2 but will be very pleased if I can manage it.

monster54 · 16/05/2013 18:45

Coming to the end of my 3rd fast this week. About to have my salad and quorn chicken....

I'm not feeling positive about official weigh in tomorro. I have had sneaky peeks and it is really sticking....urrrrggghhhh trying not to feel down as everyone has hit plateaus but I am feeling demotivated!

I've had a big drop on the chest front....poor saggy post breast feeding boobies :o( desperate need for new bras but waiting to reach goal!!

Will do my squats after dinner!

EagleRiderDirk · 16/05/2013 19:28

Squat challenge day 3 done along with some reverse crunches. I will stop looking pregnant soon.

Looking forward to tomorrows fast and break from squatting!!!!

monster you mean there's something other than sagging boobies? i'm not sure I remember that time Wink

NoForkNKnife · 16/05/2013 19:42

invino your post has really cheered me up. Your starting weight and height are the same as mine now. I'd LOVE to be 11st anything right now. Your motivated me after a difficult day.

3rd fast and I've failed a bit. Managed 600-700cals Sad. I actually wasn't hungry as such, but the headache I had early evening was crippling. I ate my dinner (over) and its all but disappeared. Think I'm coming down with something too, which hasn't helped. Hoping the headache was down to that.

So rubbish day. DMIL is really ill in hospital and DH not coping with news (not looking good), massive argument with DH this morning, feel like shit and DD1 has been bloody awful all evening (first time I've sent her to bed without a story). Not a good day to fast. But I did it! Kind of.

plecofjustice · 16/05/2013 19:56

Well Done Fork!! On a good day, it's easy to fast, but keeping at it on a bad day is a hard thing!

Speaking of which, I've failed. Was trying to do the last day of a 4:3 today, but have managed to eat 900 cals - had such a long day at work and was so hungry that I had to get something to eat on the way home, and it was all over from there really.

Still I've done 2 successful fasts this week, so that's gotta count for something, surelY!

FrozenFlowers · 16/05/2013 20:02

Fast Day number 2 is going well so far. I had the second portion of my chargrilled vegetables for lunch, and didn't enjoy them remotely. Won't be making that again. At the weekend I am going to make soup for lunches next week!

I've just had my dinner - four meatballs made with extra lean beef, some asparagus, some broccoli and a teeny bit of sweet corn. 235 calories according to MFP! I've still got some calories left for another skimmed milk and strawberry smoothie before bed.

I found it a bit harder today than I did on Tuesday, but it has been so much less difficult than I was expecting. Annoyingly the scales I bought are clearly duff - they record wildly different weights every time they are used (a stones difference!). This means that although I weighed myself the other day, I don't know if it was accurate or not. I need to take them back and get some mechanical ones I think.

BetsyBell · 16/05/2013 20:07

frozenflowers Are your scales on a hard surface? Mine don't work on carpet and they need a level bit of floor - had to try them out in different places in the house before I found consistency!

spacegirl81 · 16/05/2013 20:29

Am thinking of doing this diet to lose my baby weight. Can you do it if you are breast feeding? DS feeds 4xs a day and is on solids now too. He's 7 months Grin

Dotty342kids · 16/05/2013 20:38

fast day for me today and had some pasta with couple of vegetarian sausages and a home made tomatoey sauce. Didn't weigh out the pasta but am fairly sure (as veggie sausages only 70 cals each) that I was on or around the 500 cals. Decided that as DH away and my willpower isn't always what it should be that I'd distract myself from early evening temptation and dragged myself and the kids off to a zumba class Smile. Was just what I needed as not only do I feel virtuous for having exercised, but it's knocked any potential hunger on the head so I know I'm fine for the evening now.
Might do mini fast tomorrow but I'll see how I feel when I get up (or, to be more precise, what the scales say!)

FrozenFlowers · 16/05/2013 21:20

They were on carpet BetsyBell so maybe that was the problem. They had carpet "feet" that we're supposed to make them work on carpet, but maybe that's useless? I did try them in the bathroom and they gave different measurements in different places there as well! Our floors don't seem especially uneven, but maybe they are.

Southeastdweller · 16/05/2013 21:57

tortoise Your perception is clearly different to mine because I see most people here doing 5:2 but sometimes not fasting two days or even one for whatever reasons. Then there's a minority who've mixed it up with an extra day, zero fasts, consecutive days. I'm in the latter camp - four weeks of fifteen on 4:3 and two zero fasting days. I only calorie count on my fast days but not always. I never count on NFD's - I just can't be bothered to. Neither do I know my T.D.E.E. One reason why I embarked on this WOL is how practical and relatively easy I thought it would be and boy oh boy have my predictions been proved right. As well as being quite lazy I need variety sometimes so I just love this WOL. I doubt I've lost as much as most others within fifteen weeks on 5:2 'proper' but I don't care.

I guess the key things are sustainability and finding a way of I.F that suits you and your lifestyle.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 16/05/2013 22:06

Mine do that too, Frozen, I just picked my favourite spot in the bathroom and use them there Grin

Fast day 2 today, just having some left over curry- was ready for some food! Only finished work an hour ago, got through with a spot of soup half way through the shift. Plenty of sparkling water today, been to and from the toilet all day!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 16/05/2013 22:10

Oh, and everyone keeping their boobs- I'm very jealous! I'm pear shaped, the first place I lose weight is my waist and my boobs. It's coming off my bum and thighs now, but takes a lot longer.

postmanpatscat · 16/05/2013 22:40

Another fast day endeth...have had a few gurgles but enjoyed it after three days of unhealthy snacks between my healthy meals.

karaoke I hear you...I went down a back size first, and then a cup size too!

Pain au chocolate or yogurt for breakfast...will decide which in the morning!

mam29 · 16/05/2013 22:42
