The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I love being able to sit eating pizza and drinking beer of a night (not every night of course) and being able to turn around and say 'I'm on a diet you know'. Grin

Dotty342kids · 16/05/2013 10:57

I'm doing the Squat Challenge. Day 1 was 50 and it's gone up in 5's or 10's each day wtih a rest day every 3-4 days. Today I'm about half way through and have done 140! By the time i finish I'll be doing 250....... apparently Grin
saf well done on staying at a good weight!
I'm still dithering around 10st12-13 but have possibly overeaten on a few of my eating days over the last week so am not really surprised.
May throw in another fast day tomorrow actually. Not done any consecutive ones before but sometimes I think it's good to shock your system a bit.

For whoever was asking up thread, I've done 5:2 since mid Feb and have lost 10-11lbs in total. I've occasionally thrown a third mini fast into the equation just to mix it up a bit or to compensate for a heavy weekend. I couldn't contemplate a zero fast - and don't see the need but can understand why others who think they can cope with it, do!

INeedThatForkOff · 16/05/2013 11:32

Sipping black coffee and looking forward to my lentil soup tonight. This WOE is great for making you appreciate food.

DorisShutt · 16/05/2013 11:58

Squat challenge sounds interesting. Is it all at once per day or in little blocks (so if the target was 50 per day you could to 5 lots of 10)?

Dotty342kids · 16/05/2013 11:59

Doris entirely down to you! CAn do them in sets of 10 if you like, or all in one go. As long as you do the required amount each day Smile

Itsaboatjack · 16/05/2013 12:14

I was just thinking, I worked out I've lost 20lbs in 16 weeks, so about 4 months. I want to lose another 24lbs, so maybe at the same rate that will be 5 months. So that takes me up to mid to late October. I'm sure I'll have a couple of weeks off when on hols and probably put on a couple of pounds so let's say by mid to late Nov I hope to be maintaining.

This doesn't seem daunting at all. Can you imagine being on ww or Dukan or such like up until neatly Christmas? The thought of calorie or point counting or avoiding carbs for that long would be horrendous!

mam29 · 16/05/2013 12:36

Bit of news here.

started monday -struggled reckon 800 cals.

Tried again on tuesday again found hard 700caks

was going to do fast day yesterday but thourght sod it I need a break so must of have 1200-1500cals yesterday.

so as mon,tue were really fails thourght apply myself./.

i have not eaten anything in last 12hours

had some water and one coffee

walked a few miles pushing 2year old in buggy this morning reckon I walked least 4-5miles and still have pm schoo/nursery run 2miles.

I ventured bit further to go cheap fruit and veg shop.

have to walk 40min sto eldests school
walk her and drop her off at gym.
then pick middle child up from nursery
take middle and youngest to their preschool for books at bedtime so wont get diner until least 7pm.

I know people say 16hours fast gap is good.

so if pack few strawberries and apple in my bag to eat around 4pm I then managed 16hours is that good?

for tea in co-op yesterday in fruit ad veg section was roasted med veg in silver tray reduced in price.

says 85cals per half pack so 170 in total.

undecided if this be enough and make a bowl of broth too.

have eggs and other veg so hoping make omelette with salad tommorow.

trying to meal plan a little stop me cheating.

planning on another fast day tommorow as not counting mon/tue as went over then chill a bit on weekend.

Bad news is went to boots and weighed myself

heavier than i thourght.

gives bmi which is quite high end of range for my height.
the rage of weigh is massive 3stone which seems odd.

I want to lose least a stone. Not sure how log it take me.

Not started exercise regime yet of squat challenge, shred and running.

hubbys off tommorow so if weather ok might go run then would like to go running 2-3times aweek.

Wish I could afford gym.

need to get new batteries ad find wiii remote.

well done everyone on losses.

I would say im disordered eater as even after meal i still feel hungry and eat too much.

Itsaboatjack · 16/05/2013 12:43

Day 4 of squat challenge done. (day 4 is a rest day Grin)

postmanpatscat · 16/05/2013 12:45

mam you're doing great and you're in the right frame of mind. My gym costs only £16 a month, maybe there is one near you? Monthly rates start from £11 here . No good if you like a pool or classes really but ideal if you're after weights and cardio.

Itsa I was reading Closer yesterday, Patsy Kensit says she's on a diet for life (WW), couldn't help but feel sorry for her. She's the same age and almost same height as me, has been restricting her food for months and is still heavier than me, ha! Really dodgy airbrushed pic of Gillian Taylforth in there too!

Decided to fast today, have regained 1kg since Monday and now back to my goal weight. I achieved that by eating lots of crap so I'm ready for 500 cals of healthy food today!

Lovely and sunny here, hope it is where you are.

Itsaboatjack · 16/05/2013 12:56

Being on ww for life, perish the thought! Can you imagine trying to chose off a restaurant menu with points in your mind!

mam I read somewhere once that dog owners lose more weight than gym members, because they exercise more regularly. For me it's not worth membership as I wouldn't be able to get there enough to get my money's worth. I walk a lot, try and run a couple of times a week and have bought some hand weights and just lift them when I have 10 mins to spare at home, although if you unsure of posture it's worth looking online for some advice so you don't get an injury.

Lifting weights, even small ones is important to build muscle, which is better for fat burning.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/05/2013 13:13

Mam, I think you've spent a long time feeling out of control wrt food, and not really knowing what you eat and what you weigh - and this sounds like you are coming back into the space where you are the boss again.

Thanks everyone for the nice thoughts and data points. You are all very insightful about the dynamics involved. I have eaten/drunk probably 3000 calories today. Deliberate 'day off', but you know, it's embarrassingly close to a normal day pre 5:2. No wonder my weight was sky rocketing! I said right at the start, as long as I can stop the upward trend that's the primary goal. I didn't realise how simple that bit would be. I didn't realise how bad my diet was. But given that I just weaned, and yet my weight's down, I'm so so so happy, guys.

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 13:21

Hi
Fasting today but it's more difficult than usual.
Tiredness isn't helpin. Plus i've just spent a fortune on snacks as we have visitirs later. So i've just had a coffe with s milk and three olives and 2 tiny pieces of marinted chicken.
It will still come in

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 13:23

Who else as an aitting room?

Sitting room of course. Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 16/05/2013 13:28

Nearly ended up on a fast day accidentally today. DD released something so horrific into her nappy that I couldn't face food for quite some time!

Very oddly I'm finding myself headachy and shaky today. I have eaten (eventually), and am about to again but its weird that I don't get this on fast days but have on an nfd

mam29 · 16/05/2013 13:28

I havent weighed myself ages as scales in bathroom broke think kids killed it.

Been off sw year 1/2 slipped back into old ways and struggled with sw in the end. never did lose last 6lb to target.

Todays weight still 2stone lighter than when started sw so havet put on huge amount.

i really like idea of gym to motivate me need pro guidance.

but pure gyms city centre membership cheap but bus fare and time to get there.

surprised myself today think now more focussed and hopefully will see results.

thanks for advice and encouragement.

feel so much to learn.

I walk loads just not sure if its enough.

EagleRiderDirk · 16/05/2013 13:30

doris I'm breaking the squats into 5 blocks. Their didn't seem like any strict rules and I felt that made it a bit more achievable.

EagleRiderDirk · 16/05/2013 13:38

there even Blush

Dotty342kids · 16/05/2013 13:46

itsaboat that made me laugh! I am having to skip my "rest" days of Squat Challenge in order to complete it before going on holiday as I am not going to be doing 250 squats in 30 degrees of heat!

Emilythornesbff · 16/05/2013 13:54

Hmm, holidays. I was thinking of fasting on the travelling days.
Anyone fasted on hols?

Bramblesinafield · 16/05/2013 14:03

I tend to take the hols off, Emily.

Huge NSV today. I have finally fitted comfortably into the next size down in trousers. I know that I really have lost that stone now, I tend to think that I am a stone between each dress size. It feels good to think that I'm doing well for my long term health. And it's starting to look good too!

INeedThatForkOff · 16/05/2013 14:14

Well done Brambles, I remember that sense of achievement from when I lost weight pre-DCs.

I'm torturing motivating myself on my FD by planning what I'm going to eat tomorrow on MFP. It involves a McD's breakfast Blush Sorry if that's too much for my fellow casters, but it's keeping me going. If I give up now, I can't have it!

INeedThatForkOff · 16/05/2013 14:15

Fasters, not casters!

LickTheSpoon · 16/05/2013 14:20

Good tips on home exercising Emily. You're right - things like sit-ups etc are easy to fit in at home. Damn - there go my excuses!! Re holidays, I like the idea of fitting in a fast on the travelling day. Aeroplane food would prob be easier to resist! Am off on hol in June - might pinch that idea...

And thanks Betsy too, I've found shred part 1 on YouTube, so will be giving it a go, although I don't have any weights so will have to do without.

Fast day tomorrow. Have a soup ready and waiting in fridge...bring it on!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 16/05/2013 14:20

A bit down today ladies. It's my mum's funeral tomorrow (no sympathy please, we weren't close), so I took myself to M&S to buy an outfit. I just about squeeze into their range as I am a size 24 Blush. I've been doing this WOL since April, so about 5 weeks. My jeans are looser and I find I have gone to a size 22 bottoms but still 24 on top.

Hideously overweight and I hated myself in the mirror. I'm on a normal day today (fasted Mon and Wed), but don't feel so motivated for this WOL today. Can it really work for someone with as much to lose as I have? I know it'll take a while and I find fast days quite easy - it just seems too easy.

EagleRiderDirk · 16/05/2013 14:53

Well done brambles
