The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

peachy 22 lbs lost in 3.5 months. Still losing even though have reached goal weight (68 lbs lost in total since early last year).

Southeastdweller · 14/05/2013 22:48

peachy 18lbs lost since end of January with minimal effort and I've a much healthier relationship with food. Still eat all of my fave foods but much less of them mainy due to not fancying huge amounts anymore rather than consciously denying myself. This WOL has been revolutionary and no hardship for me.

Twinmama32 · 14/05/2013 22:54

peachy I've lost 21Ibs since the beginning of feb. I haven't exercised and I've still eaten out/ had takeaways. I've just been more mindful and aware of my consumption than before.
Once you get past the first few weeks you'll barely notice you're doing it, it just becomes another day in your week!

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll do brilliantly x

virginposter · 14/05/2013 23:19

peachy 30lbs lost since this time last year (size 8/10) and now maintaining/slow loss. Not only can you lose lbs and inches and become more healthier, you can also keep the weight off Grin

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 23:23

According to MFP it was 130 calories, INeed. Would be less with less milk, which I think would be fine. I suppose without the strange thickening effect of the bamix it would be less foamy and more like strawberry milk. I'm not sure if a normal hand blender would have exactly the same effect or not? That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing mind!

Breadandwine · 15/05/2013 01:14

peachy 10kgs lost last year. Been maintaining current weight for 6 months.

This works!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/05/2013 01:31

Well done, FrozenFlowers, I hope you are now sleeping the sleep of the just and righteous.

Peachy, I'm fairly new at this, but in 2.5 weeks I've lost 4lbs.

Yesterday was a NFD, and I just ate what was convenient when it was offered to me, and even including a couple of glasses of wine (Blush) that came in under my TDEE by a couple of hundred calories. In the afternoon I had picked up my very favouritest snacks in the whole world, intending to nibble them with a glass of wine in the evening, and in the end I didn't feel hungry enough to touch them.

Today's another FD, first time I've scheduled them only one day apart. Have finally got organised enough to cook dinner ahead of time rather than scouring cookbooks and calorie counters at 5pm when I'm starving. And then, theoretically, I have FOUR whole NDFs in a row. How odd that will be.

ChesterDrawers · 15/05/2013 07:00

Eugh, not even 12 hours in and struggling already. I hardly slept again, I feel hungry and in such a bad mood. I am working from home today so good in one way as I can avoid food but not great as time will drag and food will be easy to put my hands on at all times. If I make it though today I think it will be a miracle!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/05/2013 07:05

Are you trying for zero cals, Chester?

I got so nauseated this morning - from lack of food, I presume, it's always been a symptom - that I ate a custard cream. Not even very nice, and 70 bloody calories. But I was seriously going to throw up otherwise. Since then I've managed just a low cal chicken soup thing and it's 3.30pm. I just hope that dinner will give me enough energy to go to my fencing class. If it's a toss-up between the two, fencing will win.

ChesterDrawers · 15/05/2013 07:14

That was the plan Tortoise but I'm not sure it will pan out like that. I'm not sure if Monday and Wednesday is a good idea for two zero cal fasts - not enough time in between to feed up. But they are the days that suit me, esp as I weigh in on a Thursday so like want that to be after a fast.

It's gonna be a long day. Any diversionary tactics appreciated (not a bath, I hate baths).

swallowedAfly · 15/05/2013 07:31

chesterdrawers -i don't think you need two zero fasts in a week let alone with only a day in between. how about doing one zero and one 500?

i failed again yesterday! by some miracle i'm 10.12.8 despite not having fasted for nearly 2wks now. i must manage a fast today. so far off the wagon it's silly.

well done on your loss tortoise - great start to encourage you to keep going.

rainy and cold here and i have no boiler so fasting will be accompanied by shivering today i think.

tiredemma · 15/05/2013 07:34

I let myself down last night. Did well all day - thought I had it 'nailed' at 488 calories.

At 9pm DP walks into the lounge with an ice cream (lovely cream, surrounded in dark chocolate)

It was like crack to me. I devoured one.

disappointed in myself.

MelanieCheeks · 15/05/2013 07:42

Don't be too hard on yourselves guys! Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I have an interesting day ahead of me - at lunchtime I have to call over to my old Uni, where apparently I've won an iPad! So best outfit for photos in the alumni magazine, bit of slap on, favourite Prada scent. Then after work I'm straight to a Board of Govs meeting - I'm going to try to get one of those M&S meals to have beforehand as I don't want my tummy to rumble. Plus it'll be easier to resist the choccie biccies if I'm not Hank Marvin.

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 07:52

Today is my second of 3fasts this week. Monday went well but no zero fasts. Just too hungry the next morning and overeat.

tiredmamma ice cream is my major weakness. I avoid on fasting days but I ind that a mini magnum at 120? Ish calories hits the spot.

I'm a bit worried about today as I'm meeting a friend for "lunch" which for me will have to be herbal tea. Otherwise I'll only get 2 fasts in. At least it means I won't be eating the cafe's calorific sandwiches or cakes.

Itsaboatjack · 15/05/2013 07:59

Morning all. Fasting again today, going for a liquid only one. It won't be zero cal as I'll probably have a mug or two of bouillon and some milk in my tea tonight.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 08:08

Good luck itsaboatjack

Now I'm not sure about today's fast. Aaagghhhhh! So tempting to make it a 5:2 week. 5:2 is so comfortable.

Somebody decide for me. Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 15/05/2013 08:08

peachy I've lost 15lb in just under a month on this. I was tackling this like a diet to start with, but more because I needed some motivation to curb my bad eating habits which has really helped. I'm eating healthier for most meals and slightly smaller portions. So last week I had half a medium dominos pizza and wedges for dinner one night and didn't feel guilty at all (though I'm a weirdo who doesn't like cheese so that must have helped a lot!). And I also quite often get to have some crisps, chocolate or Wine and be below TDEE. It doesn't feel like a diet anymore, just a change of lifestyle

EagleRiderDirk · 15/05/2013 08:09

Emily I'm too cowardly for 4:3 so my advice would be biased Wink

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 08:10
Grin
ChesterDrawers · 15/05/2013 08:19

I am going to see how I go as to whether today is zero cals or not. If not I'll just have my 500 and call it a normal fast day. I won't be doing this every week, way too hard, but DH is away this week so it seemed like a good idea when I planned it. Not so much now!

BetsyBell · 15/05/2013 08:19

Emily If it feels right to do 5:2 then do that :)
Y'know, you don't have to do zero fasts either...

I remembered to do my squats this morning - 1st day! It's a lot easier without the weight's a la Jillian.

mam29 · 15/05/2013 08:19

Well yesterday marinally better than monday still over 500.

more like 700.

did onion and mushroom soup with veg oxo ans really helped for tea.

Think i need to be organised.

we need to do a food shop.

does anyone recocomend soups for fast days?

I think my homemade soups

tomato and basil

carrot and coriander be quite low cal.

not sure about leek and potato due to milk.

going to try for 3rd fast day and hop get hang of it.

got eggs and asparagus so thinking omlette before tonights commitee meeting but have meeting this morning with council over preschool at chairs house so must resist the biscuits and cakes.

has anyone tried 5,2 in reverse? or would that be too bad?

im not sure could go zero calories.

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 08:27

mam soup is my fasting day food.
It's tasty, filling, nutritious, and convenient.

Oh bigger. I think this will be NFD. But I might avoid breakfast, have a reasonably "controlled" lunch at the cafe' and have my FD broth for supper instead of the risotto that ds and dh are having tonight.
A mini fast if you will.

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 08:30

I think I would derail on a 2:5 plan mam Grin
After my zero fast I overrate the next day, just couldn't control my appetite. The soup really makes the difference.
Also I don't want to jeopardise my milk.

Bet it works well if you can stick to it though. Smile

FrozenFlowers · 15/05/2013 08:34

I made it through day one! I'm quite impressed with myself - I didn't crack and eat any biscuits, and I stuck to the 500cals. I thought I'd be starving this morning but I'm not at all - I'm not normally a breakfast person so that is probably why. I think for me the key will probably be being really really organised and planning in advance exactly what I will eat on fast days - if I have to make decisions on the day I won't be able to do it!

I am awed by talk of zero fasts and 4:3 - at this point I can't imagine being able to do either of those things ever. But I suppose we will see in time.
