Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Booster - wish I'd bought them at the supermarket this morning, rather than a 6-pack of Muller Rices. It says low-fat on them, and stupid me I didn't look at the calories... 211 calories for one pot!!!!! It was v nice and all, but... 211!!!! Shock

AND it used up 25 of my 26 daily grammes of sugar on MFP. ShockShock That'll learn me - I'm usually pretty good at looking at sugar content of stuff, eg would rather buy full-fat mayo than the lighter version with all the added sugars and grim-sounding stuff in it. Will be staying away from these little pots in future. hope DS1 likes them...

swallowedAfly · 14/05/2013 15:03

chocupid go easy on yourself. if you've been losing weight anyway from not eating with all the hurt and stress then i don't think you need to undertake zero fasts right now. instinct tells me it's a bad idea to get too controlling around food and weight at such a vulnerable time.

EagleRiderDirk · 14/05/2013 16:25

So my friday plans are off now - DD has picked up chicken pox. At least my fasting routine is going to stay the same.

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 16:53

On the way home from work and struggling a bit now - I'm going to find the evening really hard I can tell Sad Sad

silverbeetle · 14/05/2013 17:26

FrozenFlowers the first one is the worst. Every time you feel hungry try and have a glass of water or cup of tea/coffee. A large glass of water before my evening meal often helps me to feel nice and full. Then keep busy, have a nice bath, read a book, paint your nails etc.
Then before you know it, it will be time to go to bed.
Think of all the nice things you can eat tomorrow.
Good luck Smile

Dotty342kids · 14/05/2013 17:36

Agree with bath option as a good distraction on fast day evenings, especially on horrid nights like this! Bath, exfoliate, moisturise all over, paint nails etc etc. Good way to spend the time and it'll make you feel good about yourself too Smile before you go flashing the new and improved you about in the summer!

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 17:55

A bath sounds like a good idea - think I will definitely have one later on!

I've got my chicken breast marinating in some herbs and lemon waiting for dinner. DH is a vegetarian and I don't usually eat much meat at home (a lot of cheese - the weight gain isn't much a mystery really!) so it is a bit of a treat to have it which is helping.

I am having a cup of tea now. I'm lucky that I already take my tea black, so no milk and sugar doesn't feel like a deprivation! I would normally be having a biscuit as well, and I am missing that. But I'm trying to remember that I don't NEED that biscuit, and all that grazing is the type of bad habit that has led to this in the first place!

I'm really hoping that this diet will help me to reset some of my bad food habits, and to think about why I have such a poor relationship with food generally.

INeedThatForkOff · 14/05/2013 19:07

Frozen, yesterday I found the evening meal made all the difference. I was fine afterwards.

Strangely my milk supply has improved. Normally if I'm 'good' on Weight Watchers it dwindles. Will watch with interest. I've gone quite a bit over TDEE today, so am going to plan tomorrow's eating now. I'll also be making some lentil and tomato soup for Thursday's fast.

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 19:27

I hope it does - I can smell it in the oven and I have warned DH that if he comes too close there is a serious risk that I will try to eat him.

ChesterDrawers · 14/05/2013 20:01

Just finished tea and having a peppermint tea before I embark on my second 36 hour fast of the week.

I will no doubt need a cup of black coffee at some point tomorrow but other than that I am aiming for just water, water, water.

Am feeling hungry tonight though, even though I've eaten so hoping that's not a bad sign!

ponygirlcurtis · 14/05/2013 20:12

frozenflowers I've found that I've been hungry in the afternoon/early evening, it's almost as if I forget that I've still got dinner to come! So I think once you've had dinner, you'll feel able to make it to bedtime no problem (or with a wee cuppa if necessary).

Eagle sorry about DD, chickenpox is rubbish! Hope she's ok with it and doesn't have it too bad.

Bramblesinafield · 14/05/2013 20:25

Definitely a bath as a distraction. And a treat. Look Down and see your tum shrinking.

I find now that I don't eat until about 5.30, eating unlocks my hunger and I save my calories for th evening.

Lower again today. Makes the hard work worth it!

postmanpatscat · 14/05/2013 20:44

well done brambles on your loss and chester on your determination!

PoshVoice · 14/05/2013 21:11

First fast day of the week for me today, in the bag.

I have been experimenting with having just one meal on fast days at 2000 but I've decided not to carry on that way, once I had my meal at 2000 I became even more hungry afterwards and ended up eating loads. So it's back to a boiled egg at lunchtime and then my main meal in the evening. Anyone else had something similar?

Good to see all the new 5:2ers, it gets very easy after your first few so hang on in there.

Weigh day on Friday and I'm hoping this week will be the week I break through the 25 bmi barrier to become officially no longer overweight for first time in five years Smile

peachypips · 14/05/2013 21:32

I just need to know if you have all lost weight? Before I embark I want to have some hope !

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 21:34

I had a bath - it was indeed a good distraction!

I saved my last calories for 250ml skimmed milk and 130g strawberries. I made a sort of smoothie by whipping the milk up with my bamix hand blender and mashing the strawberries in to it. It was quite successful, but to be honest it was too much! I would repeat with less milk and the same amount of fruit for more intense flavour. It was basically just eating some pink foam!

I think I've made it as I am going to go to bed fairly soon. I have appreciated having you all on this thread. I haven't told my colleagues about this so it's great to have somewhere to bang on about it! DH is being very supportive but he isn't joining in (he's as thin as a rail already).

WipsGlitter · 14/05/2013 21:44

I've lost 7lbs in five weeks and am really pleased. My weight fluctuates a lot but its generally a downward trend.

Curlylox · 14/05/2013 21:55

Erm what's the squat challenge, where can I find, how do you do it, tell me tell me tell me PLEASE?????

postmanpatscat · 14/05/2013 22:05

peachy will 21lbs in 12 weeks do for you? Grin

Well done wips too!

Itsaboatjack · 14/05/2013 22:06

This

Hope it works

MelanieCheeks · 14/05/2013 22:12

Peachy the vast majority of people I've come across using this method- on here, on mfp, on Facebook, and on the fast diet forum- have all lost weight. Some faster than others, rough average about a pound a week, but with lots of variations and plateaus because we are all individuals. For one or two people, it doesn't work out for whatever reason. Give it a go for 4 weeks and then assess how it's working for you ( that was my initial approach anyway )

Bramblesinafield · 14/05/2013 22:28

I've lost a stone since the start of feb peachy.

Talkinpeace · 14/05/2013 22:38

(((Chocupid)))
THe stress of your DH leaving, regardless of the background will make you lose around 15% of your bodyweight (for most women around 1.5 stones)
so DO use fasting to give yourself a few hours of control in the day
BUT if you feel the need to eat, do so as you need to keep your blood chemistry healthy.

On the other hand you have come to the right place for cheery mindless non judgemental support and motivation to get through each week.

Talkinpeace · 14/05/2013 22:39

Peachypips
I lost a stone in a term and have stayed at BMI of under 21 since before Christmas. 5:2 works. It just does.

INeedThatForkOff · 14/05/2013 22:41

How many cals in your smoothie, FrozenFlowers?
