The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well day 2take 2 after day 1 bit of a disaster.

I know I said I would wait until tea.

but just done2.5mile walk on school run.
had no coffee before leaving.

came home shattered so had 1small slice toast with butter 100cals and cup coffee around 30cals.

So as long as dont crack too much later and havent awoken my hunger monster I be ok.

Planning on coffee for lunch.

then really busy afternoon, school run then brownies.

was suppost to take 3year old over ballet and additional 2mile walk but shes bit underweather and moany so may give it a miss and hope they both nap and can do shred and throw myself into housework.
upstairs needs a hoover.

Still feeling very tired but thats not the fast feel tired a lot despite younger 2 sleeping bit better through the night now.

determined to crack this.

are fast days ok to be consecutive?

was hoping to weigh myself 5today at boots not going to happen so might measure myself instead.

The french reckon measurements give better picture and for me its inches want to lose.

I read the french women dont get fat book and she sort of suggests a weekend fast with magical leek soup. dont have any leeks but have onions.

Re sweeteners I hate them have tried a few hate way drink goes too frothy, overly sweet with odd aftertaste.

ElizaCBennett · 14/05/2013 10:29

I was lying in bed this morning fantasising about getting on the scales and seeing a new low when I realised my new (self imposed) rules mean I don't weigh myself until Thursday!! Hmm

Oh well, eating today fasting tomorrow and we shall see.

silverbeetle · 14/05/2013 10:33

Like Betsy and INeedthatForkOff I often fancy something sweet the morning after a fast but breakfast cereal and toast are just too sweet and stodgy now and even my old faithful breakfast of porridge makes me feel yuk. I now have some fruit like a sliced pear, or handful or strawberries or blueberries with a couple of large dollops of greek yogurt and that does the trick nicely.

You can do it monster, one day done in reality now just half to go.

Betsy hope the redness is receding, Itsa beat me to it Grin

Tortoise don't worry words are the one thing you can eat as much as you like on FD's - lol

Hi agteacht welcome you don't need to be a mum, you'll soon start to feel better about yourself and more in control.

Fluffypillow great start well done, pleased for you Smile

Frozen great to hear you've started, the chargrilled vege salad sounds yummy. I cooked a spicy sweet potato and red lentil soup from my Fasting Day cookbook at the weekend (not that it was a fast day) and it was lovely, DH commented it was the best soup I had made even teenage DCs liked it!

Have a good day everyone.

plecofjustice · 14/05/2013 10:36

Hi Mam29

Sounds like youre off to a good start! Can I make a small suggestion though, based on nothing but my own fast experiences. I've found that bread is not a good fast day choice. It's a lot of calories for something that doesn't fill you up and isn't satisfying. I've found that skipping breakfast on a fast day works best for me, but if it really doesn't for you, consider trying something like an egg - 79 cals and much more filling, or porridge made with water.

monster54 · 14/05/2013 10:40

Thanks silver

Yes *betsy8 had horrific side effects coming off the sweetners...in hind sight I was consuming ALOT daily. They were making me feel hungry, I can only see this now after 12 weeks on this WOL.

My appetite is rebalanced and fasts are much more achieveable. I cut the sweetners about 6 weeks ago so about 6 weeks after I started 5:2

The main withdrawals I had were terrible headaches, tummy cramps, terrible diaorreha (sorry TMI)...but I am convinced they were totally screwing with my system and I would never touch one again if you paid me!!!

I have nothing in my hot drinks now and if I fancy a little something sweet I have a spoonful of sugar and account for that on my MFP.

Massive lessons learnt here!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 14/05/2013 10:41

Mam39 fast days shouldn't be consecutive, but since your first one came in over you might be alright this week.

I'd forgotten about that leek thing, I read that book years ago. Interesting that she didn't call it a fast but it became a major selling point for that diet.

Whitecat · 14/05/2013 10:46

Good morning everyone. Wow. Fast moving thread as usual. I'll have a catch up read later.
I've stayed the same for the last two WIs which is all my own fault. We've been fitting as many BBQs as possible into the sunshiny days and on the cold and miserable days I've been carb feasting. Mainly Sainsbury's little box treats like chocolate flapjacks and lemony shortbread. I don't even like that kind of stuff normally. I think I'm just having a period of rebellion - hope I grow out of it soon. Time to reign it in on the NFDs.
Well done losers and maintainers. Stick with it new folk it does get easier.

BetsyBell · 14/05/2013 10:49

NoFork Have you had a look at the 52Forum? There's some type 1s fasting over there by the looks of this quick search

Haha, yes, ignoring red face and focussing on flat stomach silver! A far better test than the scales Grin

mam29 I'd second PoJ's no bread/toast advice - it can make you hungrier and is far less satisfying when you can't use enough butter - save it for a non fast day and have a boiled egg if you must eat something early.

monster54 · 14/05/2013 10:53

Hey mam I am on a consecutive fast.

It's definitely going to be a long day but hopefully we will both get there!

I had a massage yesterday so trying to keep the fluids up to get rid of the toxins! It was heavenly saf!!

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 11:09

Have been coping ok so far - I don't normally eat breakfast anyway. We're just coming up to the point where I might normally have some fruit (or a biscuit[sh) though and my tummy is rumbling a bit! Time for some tea I think.

plecofjustice · 14/05/2013 11:11

Consecutive fast for me too - only way I can 4:3 in a week. Yesterday, today and Thursday...

Farewelltoarms · 14/05/2013 11:19

I'm fasting today when usually do a monday. Sigh, if I had done a Monday I'd be eating today... oh well.
Anyway, was pleased to see that after a NFD and the weekend when I weighed myself this morning was 10.7 - started at 10.13.5 four weeks ago. As I written before, it is bouncy but although the graph on MFP is jagged, it's definitely going downhill.

Emilythornesbff · 14/05/2013 11:21

mam monster and pleco' i'm really keen to hear more about your consecutive fasts. It's something that appeals to be for flexibility.

My best fasting days are those where I eat nothing until soup at supper.

Miffytastic · 14/05/2013 11:24

Fluffy well done!

Ineedthatforkoff - I felt weird this morning, sort of wobbly really. On other Tuesday's (ie after a fast) I've managed to put of breakfast til after the school run but I couldn't today, which was a shame as I was trying to get to 16 hours from my fast tea at 5.30 last night. I figured it was better to eat a little something and have the oomph to do the school run and then go for a run, which I did. Then had to have a bag of nairn's oaty biscuit (pretend crisps) and a 40cal chunk of cheese when I got in!

Also on the shouty mummy thing - I am sometimes a bit short at bedtime I find. But I think it has got better in time, compared to what I was like back in February. But still I was grateful DH was doing stories last night.

monster54 · 14/05/2013 11:51

Same here PoJ I'm doing a couple of weeks of 4:3 to try and push me in to the 10's....

I am doing the same fast days too.

emily I was feeling a little weak this morning and needed a cup of tea to get going but hitting lunch now and feel Ok...of to have a break from work, do my squats and have a glass of water!!

Hopefully that will keep me going until tonight when I will have a nice tea!!

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 14/05/2013 11:56

Does anyone else feel weirdly not hungry on non-fast days? Have noticed it a bit in the past but never as extreme as today. So far I've had half a slice of toast, been to the gym for an hour's pretty hard workout and am just having a coffee whilst examining (and rejecting) all options for lunch, I just don't fancy anything.

I assume this isn't really particularly sensible, especially as fasting tomorrow, is there a reason for it?

Hope everyone else is having a good day, thanks in advance for any responses.

Itsaboatjack · 14/05/2013 12:15

After saf planting the seed I thought I might go for a massage, something I usually only treat myself too when I'm on holiday. So I googled massage in my local area to see where to go, I never realised there were so many other types of massage parlours, iykwim, round here!! And I thought I lived in a nice area Shock

Re the consecutive day fasts, I was doing them for a while and whilst I found the fast days themselves quite easy I wasn't doing so well on the NFDs. Looking back I had the worst weight loss over the period of time I was doing consecutive days. So I suppose whilst its doable it depends on your eating habits and how it will personally affect you. I'm going to AFDs from this week and focusing on better eating on NFDs.

DAY 3 OF THE SQUAT CHALLENGE DONE

Itsaboatjack · 14/05/2013 12:43

I'm joining you on the squat challenge Monster. Day 2 done here.

monster54 · 14/05/2013 12:51

Nice to have you itsa

I know a few of the other members are in too! Buns of steel here we come!!

peachypips · 14/05/2013 12:51

Hi everyone. I am new and about to start the 5:2. I lost five stone on WW last year but still have a stone and a half to go and I just can't face the grind of a lifetime of calorie counting every day :-(
This WOE seems the answer for me. I have read MM's book and feel hopeful, but I am so fearful that this will not work and I'll have to go back to sodding WW. I loathe it! I am 5'3" and weigh 10.12 stone.
Please tell me:
Will I lose weight?
Has this worked for everyone?
How much weight have people lost?
Can I look after two preschoolers on that little food on FDs??!!
Please encourage me- I feel this is my last hope!

plecofjustice · 14/05/2013 12:53

Hi WTCH

If you are chronically undereating as well as fasting, your brain will shut down hunger signals as it assumes you are in a famine. If you are focussed on finding enough food for the survival of you and yours, having your body indicate you are hungry is a dangerous distraction from the goal of survival. The exercise contributes to this, as it's releasing stress hormones.

My advice would be to make yourself eat something, no matter how hungry or not you feel. You will probably find that once you've eaten something proper, the hunger kicks in a bit more.

Dotty342kids · 14/05/2013 12:57

haha, welcome fellow squatters! I'm on the 130 day today. I have to warn you, felt absolutely fine until the day I went to 110, I could barely get out of bed the next day. Anyway, had a rest day after that and today did 130 fine (though may not be saying that tomorrow Smile )

Hello peachypips. A few of us started at about that size / height and have done fine on this.
Obviously it's hard to say if it'll work for everyone as though it's working for stay on this thread and those it isn't....... presumably don't! But lots of us find its far less prescriptive that other eating regimes.
For me, it's such a relief not having to think about every single thing I eat, every single day! Two days per week I plan a 500 cal evening dinner and don't eat anything else that day and the other five I eat what I like (within vaguely sensible boundaries of course!).

I started at 11st 8, am 5"4 (started mid Feb) and am down to 10st 12ish. So a 10lb loss which doesn't sound a lot but I've not been in the 10's for YEARS so it's great for me. Almost dropped a dress size as was squeezing into a 14 at the start and 14 is now loose on me though not quite in a size 12 yet. Hope to be at some point in the summer though.

ponygirlcurtis · 14/05/2013 13:40

Crazyhorse, I also often don't feel hungry for ages on NFDs. It's trying to get that balance, isn't it, between listening to your body and giving it enough fuel. I'm not sure I've got it right yet, still working on it.

peachy - wow, well done on your weight loss so far, that's amazing! I am 5"2.5' and if I get to where you are right now, I'll be a happy bunny. If I get further than that, I'll be over the moon! I have a LO too (and a bigger one), and I've found it not toooooo bad so far - drinking lots of water/tea is the key for me. And remembering that whatever it is, you can have it tomorrow.

Woke up with sore legs this morning, wondered why, then remembered I'd started the 30-day squat challenge yesterday! Grin

Boosterseat · 14/05/2013 13:40

Hartleys 10 calorie Jelly Pots! Why have i just discovered these!
