The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thank you ineedthatforkoff .

I felt like that after the first one. I went to bed really hungry, planning what to have for breakfast, then woke up and wasn't that bothered about it. It's really strange. I now feel after a fast that I could quite easily go until lunchtime without eating, I have to force breakfast down sometimes! A major change for me!

I think the weak and nauseous feeling is normal, I had that the first coulple of times. I think you can experience lots of different sympoms with this at first, that get better over time as your body adjusts.

Well done on your first fast, and have a happy eating day today Smile

akarucker · 14/05/2013 07:24

Ha! DH is so sick of me teasing him on fast days, with my descriptions of what I'm going to have for breakfast the next day, and then waking up and never feeling like it. So today he was so excited about the big breakfast we were going out for, as I promised yesterday whilst fasting. If course, woke up this morning and don't particularly feel like it, but he said he can't take the torture anymore and this time we're going!! So, off we go for a nice breakfast...

swallowedAfly · 14/05/2013 07:41

i've bounced up to 10.12.8 this morning after a terribly junk filled evening last night so it's definitely time to fast.

hope i won't find it too hard after about ten days off.

not normal for me forkoff. the day after a fast i feel fine and not hungry and as if the fast hadn't happened iyswim even if the night before i was feeling deprived. make sure you are drinking lots of fluids.

Boosterseat · 14/05/2013 07:44

Morning All,

Having a yogurt andf some melon to break my fast 1st back on track fast this morning.

Im not weighing myself as Ive stepped up my gym routine (i.e i actually bloody go!) so its non scale victories for me I hope.

Dotty342kids · 14/05/2013 08:06

Brilliant start to this woe fluffypillow and am really pleased to hear how well it's going for you!

itsaboatjack, welcome back! I was wondering where you'd got to Smile so now you're here, just crack on with your next planned fast day and you'll soon be losing again (and feeling better for it!)

BetsyBell · 14/05/2013 08:27

Right, I need a slap for being annoyed by my weigh in this morning... I guess I was hoping to see the 9 something and it's still just above that. Just checked my weigh ins for the last couple of weeks and I'm being an idiot - was bouncing around 10stone2.4 most of last week until my post-second fast weigh in where I got a new low - which is the same as todays. I need to stop being pouty, be grateful that I've got back down to the low weight - and listen to my own advice!

Or perhaps I should stop weighing in stones Grin

INeedThatForkOff · 14/05/2013 08:31

I feel ok now after a load of sugar - Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are too sweet after a day of no sugar. Not the ideal solution I know, but I needed a quick fix so I've got the energy for child care and BFing.

I didn't drink water overnight as I didn't want to wake baby DS by getting up for some. Will have to remember to take plenty to bed with me next time.

agteacht · 14/05/2013 08:34

Hi all

I'm new to this, starting today and very nervous!

Not a mum but your thread is great so I thought I'd join you guys here if that's okay!!

I am a serial dieter, having ignored my weight for years but then did weightwatchers about 6 years ago, losing 2 stone 5lb from 12 stone to 9 stone 9lb. I have consistently kept 1.5 stone of that off since then but have hovered between 10 and 10.5 stone fluctuating the whole time.
No matter what I try I have very rarely seen my weight start with a 9 over the last few years - and it really needs to.
I am 5'2, not hugely overweight but just unhappy and uncomfortable. I'm probably going to get married by the end of 2014 and I know I can't be like this then.

I haven't weighed in a month and I've been ignoring the fact that my clothes are tighter than usual. I don't quite know how but I forgot to weigh this morning!!! So ill have to weigh when I get back from work tonight instead and the fast is well underway.

Anyway really looking forward to chatting to you all and following your stories. Hope I make it through the day and that this is the start of a real change. Xx

Itsaboatjack · 14/05/2013 08:46

Thanks Dotty :)

Betsy consider yourself slapped.

FrozenFlowers · 14/05/2013 08:49

Day 1! I've had a cup of tea (no milk or sugar because I don't take those anyway) and I'm on the way to work. I've got an elaborately constructed chargrilled vegetable salad which I spent about a week making last night - according to my 5:2 recipe book it will be about 130 calories. I'm actually looking forward to eating it, but I'm going to try to push it as late as possible!

Emilythornesbff · 14/05/2013 08:53

Hi agteacht

ineedthatforkoff I have breakfast issues. I didn't feel hungry first thing (that was a couple of hours ago now Grin ) but I do like breakfast foods IYSWIM and making and eating an omelette while I'm running around after ds and bf-ing dd is just not poss. Porridge for me as a less problematic cereal. Sometimes I just chuck some ater or milk on the oats and eat it cold, with cinnamon as a sweetener.

ceebeegeebies · 14/05/2013 09:01

Morning Smile

Welcome to the newcomers. Honestly fasting days are not as scary or daunting as you think they are going to be Smile

Am on fast number 9 today. DH announced last night that he was also fasting today so I lectured him on how this was a WOE and he had to take it seriously as I am not sure he is. He works away 1 or 2 nights a week so is going to struggle to fit fasting with staying in hotels!!

Right better get some work done.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 14/05/2013 09:06

Mttum, Bsshbossh, frenchfancy, I don't believe any of you, but I'm so very excited at the prospect of eating my words (& nothing else...). So thanks for all weighing in (under goal weight...), seriously.

Yesterday was fast #5. Definitely easier for me but DH still struggling a lot. Is he doing something wrong or does it stay hard for others? I do more exercise than him, so its not that.

Snappy mum syndrome is easing at Week 3, for those worried.

ChesterDrawers · 14/05/2013 09:09

Just about to break my 36 hr water (and 1 black coffee) fast with a bowl of porridge. Not that hungry but planning on fasting again tomorrow so want to ensure I eat enough. Found it really easy this time and got lots of jobs done at home last night too. Slept dreadfully though do shattered today.

Dotty342kids · 14/05/2013 09:22

Betsy I've started setting my scales to kilos and then quickly flicking it over to stones. The reason for this is that when it says, for example 10st 13 I'm not sure if that's an "only just under 11st" kind of weight or an "you're almost at 10st12" kind of weight and I want to know!! So I check kilos too so that I can see which direction I'm moving in - either good or bad.
Obsessive? Me? Only slightly Grin

DesperateDietingHousewife · 14/05/2013 09:28

Hi all

Welcome to all the newbies. This WOL seems to be spreading like wildfire! Can't wait until it's the norm and everyone talks about fasting/feasting days!

I hit a new low last week. Finally stopped bouncing around from 9.12-10st and got to 9.11. Was so happy! Had a weekend of non-stop eating staying with friends and was worried-I weighed in yesterday morning at 9.13, fasted and was 9.11 again this morning. I found fasting easy yesterday, had a full day shopping for a wedding outfit but was fine, only had one coffee and water, half a sandwich at 1.30, the other half at 4.30 and nothing else for the rest of the evening.

Going to fast Wed and Fri as well this week, so fingers crossed I can get down to 9.9 by end of week.

fluffypillow great posts!

BetsyBell · 14/05/2013 09:33

Thanks itsa [applies compress to reddening cheek]

dotty Oh my scales do . readings - so this morning I was 10 stone 0lb.6! I do find the metric at the end of the imperial measurement a bit odd (why not ounces?) but never mind. It's all silly really isn't it? I'm glad I can discuss it here though, I'd be mortified to say any of this out loud!

monster54 · 14/05/2013 09:34

Any tips for a consecutive fast please ladies?

I did fine yesterday and came in at around the 500cal mark.....I just need all the help I can to get through today?

Has to be this way due to eating out etc....I need to get back on track due to a rubbish weigh in last week!!

EagleRiderDirk · 14/05/2013 09:51

Fast 8 today. Have been oddly looking forward to it. How strange. Am hoping that will keep me going because I barely slept last night and think today will be hard with a complete lack of energy.

Fasting Thursday as well this week instead of Friday as Friday wont be possible. Wonder how much the extra day will make me be desperate to fast before Tuesday. I never expected this side effect!!!!

BetsyBell · 14/05/2013 09:53

Despite all the carb laden foods I think I'm going to break my fast with I usually end up having a lovely bowl of berries and banana with a dollop of yogurt and maybe a sprinkling of nuts or seeds. It's just the right level of sweetness and deliciousness and doesn't leave me feeling groggy as a load of toast would. I don't touch processed breakfast cereals - I consider them the nutritional equivalent of cardboard taken with a vitamin pill and a heap of sugar. I do like a sprinkle of muesli on my fruit though, and porridge.

Hello agteacht You'll be feeling great on this WOE soon enough!

New fasters:
The side effects after the first few fasts (different for everyone - nausea, bad sleeping, feeling bad the next day, tetchiness etc) do go away after a few weeks. Headaches could be dehydration, caffeine or sugar withdrawal so make sure you're drinking enough - on non fast days too, and do have a coffee/tea or two! If you can't manage without lots of milk (or sugar) then cut it down gradually. A splash of extra water does replace milk surprisingly well and a bit of lemon in tea is lovely. I say this as many of you will get to a point where you think, hang on, surely I'm breaking my fast with this milk/sugar so it's something to work towards.

Personally I would aim to get rid of as much sugar in your diet as possible, especially on fast days- go google Robert Lustig if you're not convinced. (Disclaimer: I haven't given up all sugar but try not to be dependent on it and absolutely rule it out for fast days to give my body a break.)

Sweeteners (aspartame) are awful too - kill braincells and still make you crave the calories your body thinks it should have consumed with the sweetness. If you must have fizzy drinks try bubbly water with a little juice - lemon or lime would be ideal.

There are links to articles about sugar and sweeteners in the tips & links thread (see OP).

monster54 · 14/05/2013 10:03

I can support betsy I was totally addicted to sweetners and went cold turkey.

Had some crazy side effects and withdrawal from them. I have since felt a lot better and my appetite is much easier to control.

There is a lot of controversay around the fact that diet foods are making us fat due to hidden sugars and ladden with artifical sweetners!

Eat clean, know what is in your food and you can't go wrong!!

Chocupid · 14/05/2013 10:07

Looks like I'm slowly recovering after the nightmare of husband leaving us after 20 yrs!! as my appetite is coming back slowly Sad
So looks like I need to get back into a proper fast routine, (don't want to gain any of the weight I have lost)
So may try the zero fast your all raving about today and shock my body back into mode.
Also like the idea of a massage, thanks for sharing saf think I deserve one anyway and with the bonus of weight loss what's not to like Smile
Good luck to all fasters today.

NoForkNKnife · 14/05/2013 10:21

8lbs in 3 weeks?! I'd be really happy with that Grin.

2nd FD yesterday and I found it really tough. I was fine until late afternoon, then struggled until bed (which with the baby is normally 12-1am!). I ended up eating more like 600 calories.

Still-I did weigh in this morning (I know I know) and I've seen the lowest weight yet since having DD2. It's only a 1.6lb loss since starting (but for some horrible reason I gained 2lbs over the weekend) but I am grinning from ear to ear.

I'm a type 1 diabetic (on the list of not allowed! But I think that advice is very out of date with today treatments and medication) and my blood sugar has been low all night. I needed up eatin about 200 calories in fruit pastille throughout the night. Fork this would give you the symptoms your experiencing this morning-including craving that bowl of sugary cereal. I didn't notice this with last weeks fast, but I will pay attention to it overnight tonight after a NFD to see if it's just my medication that needs altering or whether it is connected to fasting.
Good luck all the fasters!

NoForkNKnife · 14/05/2013 10:22

*you're not your Blush

BetsyBell · 14/05/2013 10:23

monster Wow, didn't realise you'd had massive withdrawal effect from sweeteners - yuk, horrible evil stuff.

Yes, eat clean! Ideally cook from scratch, then you know exactly what you are eating.

If that is not possible then avoid anything that says 'low fat' - it will likely have a huge list of horrible ingredients and will inevitably contain loads of sugar or sweeteners and if you compare the calorie difference between a 'diet' food option and a 'normal' option the cals are often not much lower and the sugar content often much much higher. Your body will store excess sugar as fat, you are better off eating fat and getting the nutrition that it contains. Weightwatchers products are often the worst - please look at ingredients lists every time you pick up a ready meal or any pre-made packaged items.

Fat is not the enemy. (Except trans fats...)
