The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Tomorrow is my first fast day. I have planned what I am going to eat and when, but I am very nervous about not being able to manage. I really need to make this work. I have just weighed myself for the first time in years, and I am absolutely horrified to discover that it is much worse than I thought - I weigh 16st 5lb. For my height, I need to weigh 11st maximum. So there is a long way to go. I feel absolutely sick with myself - I can't believe I've let this happen to my body.

Moominlandmidwinter · 13/05/2013 18:08

Hello, can I join please?

I started the 5:2 two weeks ago. Had been waiting for a while, as have been breastfeeding. DD is now 7.5 months, on three solid meals a day, and I have started giving some formula during the day as I'll be going back to work soon. So I thought that it would be ok to start.

I was already at a healthy weight (5ft 6.5 and 9st13.75lb), but I feel my best at about 9 stone. I was that weight when I got married 3 years ago, and would love to get back to that!

I've been doing my fast days on Mondays and Thursdays. I have my dinner the night before at around 7.30pm, then manage to get through the day on mainly herbal tea and water, to save my calories for my evening meal. I've been discovered that I really like Twinings peppermint and nettle tea, and if I'm feeling a bit peckish, a mug of this helps. The only problem I'm really finding is that I'm getting awful headaches.

I'm down to 9st 9.5, so quite happy with the loss so far, but I know that I could do better on my NFDs. I have been quite indulgent so far, but am going to use MFP, set at maintenance, so it's allowing me 1820kcal. Have got to do my second fast day on Wednesday, as on Thursday I'm going for a spa day with a friend for her birthday, and would quite like to indulge in a couple of glasses of prosecco while we are there!

Am cooking spaghetti carbonara for dinner for DH and the DDs, but am going to have a bowl of sugar-free muesli, chopped up apple, natural yogurt, and couple of teaspoons of honey. I have worked out that it contains about 400 Kcal, and really fills me up.

akarucker · 13/05/2013 18:14

frozen you can do this!! My starting weight was 15st10lb (I'm now 14st9lb) so I also have loads to lose, and I am VERY greedy. This WOE is really and truly helping me work through my greediness and cravings. Trust me, if I can do this, anyone can!

So not going to lie, your first couple of fasts will be hard, but I PROMISE that they will get easier. Really, they will! A couple if tips to remember would be:
Drink lots (water, tea, bovril etc if you need it- avoid diet fizzy drinks)
Try to wait as long as you can before your first food. It seems that the first bite 'wakes up' your hunger.
Avoid carbs - high cals, makes you hungrier
Plan what you're going to eat
Good luck. Come back for support throughout the day. There are people far more experienced than me, always willing to help.

DeckSwabber · 13/05/2013 18:28

Moomin it might be caffeine withdrawal that is giving you headaches. That's often the cause for me!

ElizaCBennett · 13/05/2013 18:28

frozen a good tip to get through the day is to plan what you will have to eat tomorrow. It can be whatever you want. Odds are you won't want it anyway but you can console yourself with the thought of it!

My first few fasts I planned huge fried breakfasts only to realise at about midday I had forgotten all about it. Grin

Dotty342kids · 13/05/2013 18:42

Hello to Frozen moominland and any other newbies I've missed!

Firstly, don't feel guilty about "the state" you've let yourself get into. We all want to be healthier and slimmer, that's why we're here, so you're not on your own and you've taken a great step to sorting it out by joining us Smile. moomin, congrats on your losses so far, that's great!

I've just had my fast day dinner of a spicy thai butternut squash and lentil curry + two chapattis and it was delicious as I'd been stuck at my desk working like a mad thing all afternoon and was knackered and cold. Unfortunately my hunger demon is still jumping up and down so going to have a glass of diet coke (I know, I know!) to shut him up.

See you all tomorrow after a (hopefully) happy weigh in.

INeedThatForkOff · 13/05/2013 18:45

Ahhh, teatime was so welcome. I think this WOE will adjust my perception of hunger and satisfaction, as well as what MM actually means by eat 'normally' on NFDs.

Just got through 24 hours straight with zero cals. The 500 I've just had will see me through til Crunchy Nut Cornflake time Smile

mam29 · 13/05/2013 18:57

Huge thanks to everyone for advice and encouragement.

today not been good must have walked 6miles all in.

got some strawberries on way home but when got in had roll and coffee.

heads not in right place today so thinking today should be normal day and try for a fast day tommorow.

would it help if had 12hours of not eating so 12midnight until 12noon?

or try to not eat until 3pm or 6pm?

weird how not until say I cant I want.

felt hungrier than normal today

some normal days i can go most day without eating as been busy.

determined to keep to plan tommorow.

im definatly evening eater so most of my cals should be in evening.

Think I need more col cal snacks in the house.
feel so tired can be arsed to do soup or shred.
have run round house with hoover.

Tommorows another in and out the house day like yoyo with 2school runs and ballet so another 6 mile walk tommorow.

I have managed low cal in past dont know where went so horribly wrong today.

Trying to keep carbs to min.

ElizaCBennett · 13/05/2013 19:16

mam perhaps you are just not ready today? Forgive yourself and plan how and when you are going to start. You can do this, I am sure most of us struggled at first - it is a marathon not a sprint. Good luck Flowers

headintheclouds · 13/05/2013 20:03

welcome all new 5:2 ers... You have taken the first step by even contemplating this WOE. It is quite difficult at first but once you get into the groove and rythmm of it ,it becomes almost second nature ( thats my experience anyway) I can honestly say that I do not struggle at all with the fasts now. Ive just had my meal today (NFD for me) and will not have anything food wise until tomorrow evening ..then Ill have my 500 cals .(fasting Tues / Thurs)I find it easier not eating until later because like others once I eat it switches on the hunger pangs.
My weight loss has been slow but Im a dress size smaller than i was and 5 inches off my waist ( im an apple with all the fat around my middle).
dotty good luck with your WI tomorrow, youll still be in the 10s !
I would like another 10 lbs off then Ill have a healthy BMI. I dont mind if it takes another 16 weeks...like someone said upthread its not a race is it!

shoutymcshoutsmum · 13/05/2013 20:21

I started 5:2 2.5 weeks ago. My concern is that on FDs I become REALLY short-tempered with my kids around 5 (and I don't become short-tempered on NFDs). Does this get better because I don't want to be mean 2 afternoons a week!

yummymango · 13/05/2013 20:25

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie! First fast day today.
Seriously you have all totally inspired me to try the 5:2, I wasn't sure but after reading your success stories how could I not? You have all done amazingly well.

Have been trying to loose all my baby weight for the past 19 months and have just about reached what I was before but am getting married in September and would like to shift another 10 pounds or so.

So had last meal at 4pm yesterday afternoon and then didn't have anything until today at 1pm which was a fat-free 65 cal yoghurt as I was going to the gym and didn't want to go on an empty stomach. Had some grapes at 6pm and didn't eat anything else until my dinner which was chicken and salad around 400 cals. I even ignored the table of birthday cakes at work!

I found it fairly easy until I left work and then I could stop thinking about food and was grumpy Sad

monster54 · 13/05/2013 20:33

Thanks emily...

Had my massage saf here's to my great big drop in weight ha ha!!!! I do feel amazing despite being plus 4lbs urrgggghhh!!!!

ponygirlcurtis · 13/05/2013 20:35

shouty - I am like that even without fasting Blush! I usually have a cup of tea while the kids are having their dinner on a FD - tbh, I quite often eat after they've gone to bed anyway (so I can actually enjoy it), so I usually do that anyway. Helps keep me straightish.

yummymango, wow, you sound like you've got it cracked on your first fast day! Well done on resisting the cakes. I've found when I've dieted before that I was just in an automatic habit of saying 'yes' when offered any food, and once I got into the habit of automatically saying 'no' I didn't even think about it any more. Hoping to get to that point again!

I'm just having my dinner now - a frozen ready meal of chilli and wedges, and some salad. Have to say, although I was getting really quite hungry, I feel quite full and there's still about a quarter of it left! That's me at just under 500 calories today, and will go from about 9pm tonight till about 1/2pm tomorrow.

(Dotty - I haven't, unfortunately, been going all day until 7pm without eating, I've been having a small soup lunch too. However, I did go until 5pm yesterday from about 10pm the night before, but that was entirely unintentional, as it was a NFD!)

Toofattooold · 13/05/2013 20:54

shouty I know exactly what you mean with regards to being short-tempered with the children. I have been exactly the same today. So snappy from 5 onwards. I couldn't wait for them to go to bed so I could eat my 500 calories. I really don't want that to continue!

Boosterseat · 13/05/2013 20:55

Back on the wagon and reporting for duty Grin

I feel so stupid, i did it for 6 weeks and felt fantastic I'm not sure why I slipped.

Went to the gym for the first time in 2 weeks, I've given up the fags for an ecig and I had a great 45 minute run and 15 minutes on the bike.

I'm still red an hour later.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/05/2013 21:23

I find myself a little more short with the kids too, but I'm usually OK if I have some tea. I fast on days I know will be full on with them so it keeps me distracted, but I also think with fasting it becomes more tiring. At least I think that's why, because I also need to go to bed earlier on fd.

virginposter · 13/05/2013 23:37

For all you snappy mums,I too used to be snappy on fast days with DH (poor thing) but now I'm ok. I think it's like the feeling cold thing, it wears off after a few months.

Itsaboatjack · 14/05/2013 00:47

Hi all, well I had a shit week last week. I haven't managed a proper fast in 11 days :(

Don't know why, and then felt rubbish so got I to that awful spiral of comfort eating and then feeling worse.

New week, new resolve. I fasted successfully today, liquid only, had around 80 cals I reckon.

It feels better already having caught up reading the thread. I should have come on here last week when it first started to go wrong. No more excuses now.

I like the sound of the squat challenge though and so I shall be joining in with that so I did 50 earlier when I was reading that a few pages back.

fastyspeedyfast · 14/05/2013 00:55

Ahhh! I am sooooo hungry. And my head is splitting aching. I find I sometimes get the headaches, and sometimes not. I always drink glass after glass water each fast day so I have no idea what's causing them. ( Well possibly it's the lack of food!)

Okay, getting another glass of water. Hot bath. Breakfast only 10 hours away.

Emilythornesbff · 14/05/2013 06:27

NFD for me.
I had soup and yogurt for early dinner and I don't feel hungry now. I may well skip a meal today or replace planned supper (scampi and chips for dh & ds) with a salad or soup?? Will see.The thing is I must stay away from white carbs as they fire up my hunger enormously.
Well done fastyspeedyfast

fluffypillow · 14/05/2013 06:47

Well, I'm 3 weeks in today. I've just weighed myself and I've lost 8lbs in total, I can't believe it! Smile

I started at 13st 3lbs, and now I'm 12st 9lbs! I'm so happy.

I lost 2lb in week 1, 3lb in week 2 and 3lb in week 3.

I've never followed a WOE that has suited me like this. It's not only helped me lose weight, but it's given me control over my eating.

I've gone from someone who eats the wrong things all day long, especially in the evenings (lots of chocs etc...) to someone who can take it or leave it.

I no longer eat after dinner at 5pm on any day. I have a milky drink at about 8pm, and that satisfies me until morning.

I am not 'panicky' about food any more, I'm much more relaxed about mealtimes, and what Im going to eat.

I don't feel scared of 'hunger' anymore. In fact I quite like the feeling of having an empty tummy, which is new to me. I don't think I let myself have that feeling for years before starting this, as I would keep myself full all the time, and now I know that I don't need to.

I went to a party in Saturday, and was nervous that I would go over the top. I made sure I had about 1000 cals left out of my TDEE. I had a couple of glasses of wine (my children were there, so didn't want to have too much!) then I had a delicious plate of food, very high fat! The difference was, I didn't go up for seconds (or thirds!) like I would have done normally. I just enjoyed what I had. I still lost 3lbs this week..........wow!!!

I could go on all day about the changes I've noticed in myself after starting this, but I think my post is long enough as it is Blush

Good luck to all new starters, you can do this. If I can, anyone can!

INeedThatForkOff · 14/05/2013 06:47

Ugh. Morning after the first fast and I feel weak and nauseous. Is this normal? Not hungry at all.

INeedThatForkOff · 14/05/2013 06:49

That's a great loss, fluffypillow

fluffypillow · 14/05/2013 06:59

Just wanted to add frozenflowers I understand the 'nervous' feeling. If you look back at my first post on a previous thread, I said exactly the same thing. I was petrified that I would fail, and it wouldn't work for me.

The first coulple of fasts are difficult, because it feels very strange. Your body expects food at certain times (or all the time in my case!) so you feel like you are fighting against it. After the first couple of times, it becomes quite normal, and you will feel much more relaxed about it. Your confidence will grow with each fast, I promise.

I am on my 7th fast today, and am feeling fine about it. As others have said, I would recommend not eating until later in the day, and just one meal. I don't like to wake up my 'hunger monster' until 5pm!!!!! drink lots, I find fruit teas great.

Lots of luck, stay strong today, and it will get easier each time. Remember, it's just for one day, you can have what you fancy tomorrow Smile
