The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning, fasting today with chronic PMT. Wish me luck!

Feeling a bit of a fail at the moment - didn't track at the weekend, and didn't exercise either. Mind you whilst I did eat normally, although with a couple of pieces of pie and crumble.... but I didn't pig out and get all bloaty so that's good I suppose.
The scales are still showing 10.3 /10.4 depending on where I measure so... not expecting much movement, but at least I'm fasting today so that's something eh?

SAF hurray for random losses :D and Postman I'd say maybe you could switch to something like 10:1 IYSWIM? a fast every week and a half or something...?

SlightlyJaded · 13/05/2013 10:19

Morning Miffy I am on a fast day and not feeling it today either. Really hard with PMT.

I am on week fiver now and stupidly didn't weigh myself until halfway through week three as it was the first time I felt able to get on scales for about 2 years Blush.

I am 12.5 stone and want to get down to 10 stone so trying to stick to 1300 a day for non fast days which I've been managing except for this Saturday when I shoveled a Chinese takeaway down me

But god I'm hungry today

GoodtoBetter · 13/05/2013 10:21

DD's cake in the oven, but think I broke my fast early by liking the cake mixture off the spoon Grin

GoodtoBetter · 13/05/2013 10:22

ooops..licking, not liking!

NoForkNKnife · 13/05/2013 10:29

This thread moves so quick! I catch up, then get distracted with baby; come back and it's moved on again!

FD here and I'm actually really psyched up. I had a pretty bad weekend. Not even put of then ordinary for me Sad but I had been planning on being more sensible. Don't think I've lost any weight (I weighed this morning before expressing Blush ) but it's not a full week yet.

Very jealous of hearing all the talk of 10,9 and even 8 stone something! It's been 7 years since I was 9 stone something. And now it's 13 stone something, I realise I've been in denial. Thing is, I told myself it wasn't too much of an issue because until 6 months ago, I was still wearing the same size clothes! Don't really know how-I must have looked ridiculous.

Extra good luck to those of us bf. there seems to be a few of us? I didn't notice a difference last FD (I'm exclusively expressing as DD2 is a 29 weeker and due to weight gain issues (ironic) on need to know how much she's taking).

Happy fasting Smile.

ELR · 13/05/2013 10:51

Morning all. Fasting today really fancied a cup of tea earlier but didn't weaken and had a black coffee instead and now feeling fine!
Just googled the squat challenge and completed day one! My problem with things like that is I forget and then can't be bothered I'm hoping that reading this thread everyday to see how everyone id doing will be good motivation to carry on.
aka I used to weigh every day then moved it to every other and now am just weighing weekly although this s only my second week of weekly weighing its just so much better and almost takes the pressure off if that makes sense?

I've got a job interview tomorrow first one in 11 years which is a little scary! But at least I am nice and slim and look good in my chosen outfit! Luckily the job is just something I fancy doing rather than having to get a job so feel a little less pressure but still want it of course!

Good luck everyone who is fasting today!

BetsyBell · 13/05/2013 10:56

Fast day, I managed 20 hours before breaking - I suspect my calories weren't very high yesterday despite the big lunch as I'd been for quite a long (for me) run in the morning! Was feeling a bit wobbly so I ate an apple and drank some chamomile tea, order has now been restored!

You were right to listen to your bod saf, I know you didn't fast as such (apart from your natural routine) but did you find yourself making better eating choices compared to say 2 or 3 months ago do you think? It's why I like to keep a food diary - our perceptions of what normal or overeating changes quite dramatically and it's interesting to contrast how it changes. That might apply to you miffy - it's worth getting it all down on record as it may turn out to be not nearly as bad as you think.

BetsyBell · 13/05/2013 10:58

I am considering the squat challenge too - did a few yesterday but didn't count them so I haven't actually started - just warming up!

Good luck with the interview ELR! Flowers

Dotty342kids · 13/05/2013 11:00

ELR, good luck with the job interview! Squat challenge is def a challenge. I'm on about day 11, did 105 yesterday and am definitely feeling it today Grin. My knees are starting to hurt though so not sure how I'm going to get on with 130 today!

monster54 · 13/05/2013 11:08

I'm like John Wayne today! I might have to have an enforced rest day today and start again tomorrow!! Will see how it wears off throughout the day!

Fast day here too! Much needed! I feel rank and super bloated but I'm mid cycle. Does anyone else get this bloat?

monster54 · 13/05/2013 11:14

I'm with you poj....we can do this!! Ridiculous rumbles from my tum this morning!!!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/05/2013 11:51

SlightlyJaded, I think the general wisdom out there is that eating too far under your TDEE on non fast days (sorry, I can't abide "feed days") actually slows your loss? So if it feels too restrictive, the 5:2 gurus will agree that you can eat a bit more!

Good luck all you fasting people. Especially those of you with PMT. I always find that the day before AF arrives I just cannot get full - and it really feels like proper stomach hunger, not just cravings.

Over here it's evening. DH and I just ate dinner, but I am still only at 350 cals for the day (he'd eaten lunch, so I kept dinner down to 250 for us both). Fancy some popcorn later, I think. We're going to fast again Wednesday - I do a sport on Wednesday nights, but might try eating all my cals before going out to the sport and see if that's okay...I'm wondering how it'll feel to have four eating days in a row after that, or if I'll be tempted to do a 4:3 this week and try for Friday as well. Crazy talk from someone who was eating family bags of crisps a month ago.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/05/2013 11:56

BsshBossh and Postman, you two are very much confusing me. You're at goal weight, you're both still losing weight, and you're...not taking this as permission to dive headfirst into a pile of fried chicken? Are you seriously saying that you enjoy fasting to the point where you will do it voluntarily, despite it having an effect you no longer desire? It's like this crazy through-the-looking-glass world, reading your posts.

INeedThatForkOff · 13/05/2013 12:05

I have a really bad stitch down my left side. Has any one else had this problem while fasting? Maybe just coincidence.

frenchfancy · 13/05/2013 12:06

Tortoise they are not the only ones. I am at goal weight (well I was 2lbs under goal), last week I only did one fast as it was a bank holiday weekend here. I not only put on 3lb, but I feel sluggish and bloated. I'm fasting today and starting to feel more alive. I will probably stick to 2 fasts a week for the long term.

It is not that I enjoy fasting as such, but I enjoy the way fasting makes me feel.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/05/2013 12:20

OMG I want some fried chicken now.

Miffytastic · 13/05/2013 12:24

Betsy you're right - I scribbled down what I could remember fromwhen I stopped tracking on Friday (tea time, which was followed by cocktails....!) and it's not that bad. I've taken a wild guess how much the homemade rhubarb goodies, but with that MFP comes out at 9000 for the week, which is lower than my recommended cal intake of 12,250

GoodtoBetter · 13/05/2013 12:29

Fried chicken.....Mmmmm.

So far today I've had a cinnamon tea, a white coffee with one sugar and I've licked the beaters after making the sponge cake. Now about to have some Spanish chickpea stew and then head to work. Tomorrow is DD's birthday so will be eating cake. Smile.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/05/2013 12:54

Oops, sorry all! Off to the recipe thread in penance.

postmanpatscat · 13/05/2013 13:05

tortoise I've been vegetarian for 30 years so have no difficulty at all in resisting fried chicken! However, in the last four days I have had chips, no tjust one but FOUR pain au chocolat, a 200 cal bar of Dairy Milk, a massive bag of peanut M&Ms split over three days and I've just had a baked potato with cheese and butter for lunch. Do I sound like I'm on a diet?! I have also kept close to my TDEE (1600) and burned off 1300 cals in two gym visits.

I miss fasting if I don't do it, but I think I need to do it less often! DP is away for another 10 days and he said to me not to lose any more weight while he is gone. I have lost 3.5lbs since he left 10 days ago Blush

ChesterDrawers · 13/05/2013 13:21

Just passed the 16 hour mark and holding firm on nothing but water despite the foody smells in the office. In fact I've not really had any hunger pangs yet so hoping my body is cottoning on to this fasting lark.

I've just bought some new nail varnish to give me something to do tonight. May as well improve myself while trying to keep my mind off food.

Emilythornesbff · 13/05/2013 13:40

HUNGRY
I've made, bought and sold a batch of chocolate cakes having eaten nothing since last night's supper.
Ds is tucking into spaghetti and pesto and my mouth is watering. This red bush tea is not currently cutting the proverbial mustard. Sad
I was going for a zero 36 hour fast but I think 24 (broken by a bowl of lentil soup at supper) might be my limit.

ponygirlcurtis · 13/05/2013 13:44

Just had a look at my MFP stuff and realised that I am inadvertently doing 4:3 in my first week! I started this WOE last Tuesday, fasted on Tuesday and Friday, and am fasting again today. Also, my calorie intake across the week should normally be around 1,800 (according to TDEE), so in order to lose a LB a week, I should be consuming around 9,500 calories/week. So far, it looks like I'm going to come in at around 7,500 for the 7 days.

I haven't been particularly hungry, but I have been making a conscious attempt to not eat rubbish, and to not give in to constant snacking. I know I'm just starting, and maybe this will give me a jump start, but I don't want to sabotage myself by not eating enough. Should I be eating more on my NFDs?

Badvoc · 13/05/2013 13:45

Use ordered a graze box!

Dotty342kids · 13/05/2013 13:55

God, I am ravenous today! I definitely think that snacking the night before a fast day does something horrid to you. I'm definitely more hungry than I would normally be on a fast day after a roast chicken dinner for tea yesterday which I followed during the evening with a bag of crisps and a mini Magnum. It's going to kill me to get to 6pm tonight Grin
