The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

To me, 4:3 is hardcore!

I got up this morning and decided to eat when hungry, got stuck in to school work (still only two subjects of one child's report written, not the amount of progress I wanted) and waited for hunger to kick in....

Still waiting!!

mam29 yes, 500 cals twice a week is normal, but I'm maintaining and what works for me is 6:1 instead of 5:2. If a zero fast makes me drop too much more weight (BMI already 20 point something) I'll do normal fast days instead. When I say I'm maintaining, it's a week tomorrow that I reached my goal weight so I haven't exactly got it all figured out yet!

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 13/05/2013 00:34

mam29, this is the surprising thing about this diet - no, most of us don't tend to binge on NFDs. I'm not calorie tracking, and I'm coming off a VERY indulgent way of eating prior to this, and I haven't consciously made any changes to my diet on NFDs...but I find that I am naturally eating better things, and less of them. And DH is the same. Thursday was our last fast day, and he said he was fantasising all day about an egg and bacon toasted sandwich. So Friday he got up and made himself one...and left half of it. I really think this is the magic of the thing, and it's what people 'on the outside' don't understand, because it seems like yeah, you would binge. But one doesn't.

I'm even now finding that my habits are changing on the day before a fast day...today is Monday morning here, a fasting day for me, and last night I felt peckish late in the evening. Usually that's time to pull out the cheese and crackers, but I find that if I have a late snack, especially if it's high GI, I struggle more the next morning. So I had a big glass of milk instead, and sure enough, I'm managing nicely this morning. Ditto wine: I can't drink much on the day before a fast day, I find that more than a glass or two and I feel a real need for carbs in the morning. So now I'm not drinking on fast days, and not drinking on the days before fast days, and that's four AFDs a week. Which for me, someone whose calorie intake was largely wine-related, is huge.

Emilythornesbff · 13/05/2013 06:54

That's good tortoise
Initially I was naturally " good" on a NFD but this past week I lost control with my old fiend friend sugar. On a fast day I can reassure myself that "I can have that tomorrow" but last week on a NFD I was like "I ^cant have that tomorrow so I'm gonna eat it all now^"

Got to stop that right now.
Anyway. Fasting today and I need to ice a batch of cupcakes for a bake sale. Grin

ChesterDrawers · 13/05/2013 06:54

Starting my third fast today. Am aiming to go 36 hours again but I will see how I cope. Finished my glass of wine and chocolate at 9pm last night so planning nothing but water til 9am tomorrow.

Am glad there are lots of posts for me to catch up on when I am struggling Smile

INeedThatForkOff · 13/05/2013 06:56

Well I've just woken up from a dream about fasting, so I feel like I've done half a day already Confused

postmanpatscat · 13/05/2013 07:04

Morning all :)

I need to get a grip on this maintaining lark. Bssh suggested trying 6:1 with the fast being zero (since I was already doing some of those) and since reaching goal weight I've done two zero fasts and eaten around TDEE the other days. I did this week's fast yesterday because it suited me best. With each fast I have lost another 600g, so about 3lbs in total. Doesn't sound like a lot, but that takes me to 8st 7.5lbs which is lower than I was aiming for.

Seems like I need to eat more or fast less or both! I also feel sick and light headed this morning despite being absolutely fine all day yesterday. Bleugh...

chester hope your fast goes well.

headintheclouds · 13/05/2013 07:13

bloody hell postman ,wish I could get lower than what Im aiming for!
Im changing fast days to Tues/ Thurs which does seem a bit odd that Im not fasting today..but trying to ' surprise ' my body into dropping weight more quickley..someone else did this and doubled their losses( think it was Peplum?). This is week 16 and still only a 10 lb loss in total..
slow..slow..quick.slow..slow....
Good luck all fasters today..

swallowedAfly · 13/05/2013 07:22

morning Smile

well today i am 10st10.6. i am spontaneously dropping weight - i am NOT complaining but it is quite strange. in a week where i haven't managed any 500cal days i've lost 3.2lbs. i even put a new battery in my scales to check they weren't just on the blink Grin

i can honestly only put this down to the massages getting my lymphatic system going again and i'm looking forward to another one on friday. i've lost more in a week off than i have in any week for quite some time Confused

bit baffled as to whether i should be fasting today or leaving well alone given i'm losing weight. i will stick to black coffee and water all day which i find easy anyway and see how i feel tonight. i 'think' i'm still getting the health benefits simply because i actually naturally fast for around 20hrs a day anyway most days simply because that's how my appetite works. presumably if you do that but don't calorie restrict at the end you get the health benefits still?

i'm kind of in the 'if it 'aint broke' way of thinking at the minute.

monster54 · 13/05/2013 07:28

Well done saf that is amazing. I've had a rollercoaster of a few days.

Starting a fresh with a fast today. I need to get back on track. I am on day 2 of the squat challenge but I will do those before bed if my legs will allow! They are sore today!!

I have a full body massage tonight saf I wonder if it will make any change for me!

monster54 · 13/05/2013 07:29

Oh and I'm going to have another hardcore 4:3 week this week! Try and get back on 1lb for every week!!

akarucker · 13/05/2013 07:30

saf see, the best things come to those who wait...

It's driving me nuts not to weigh myself. This is only the second morning of not knowing. I didn't realise how addicted and reliant I was on the scales. Usually, I'll base my day upon the scale reading. It will be interesting to see what I do without that gage each morning.

swallowedAfly · 13/05/2013 07:34

you'll need it with all those squats monster Grin really hope it has the same effect for you it has done for me.

what is this squat challenge? squats hurt but i know they're great for core muscles.

aka when are you going to weigh now - weekly?

akarucker · 13/05/2013 07:35

I'm going to try just weekly for a while.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/05/2013 07:43

Weekly sounds good. Better than my morning-after-a-fast-day routine.

4pm here and I've had 100 cals, one skim coffee and one miso. Feeling great. Much easier than my last fast day. Was going to make baked soy-ginger white fish parcels with greens, but have no fish. Do I risk the supermarket or come up with alternative?

BsshBossh · 13/05/2013 07:43

postman I'm not following my own advice. I really enjoy the habit and discipline of 5:2 (including a zero cal 36 hour fast) and am now 3 lbs under my target goal and still losing. I'll see how it goes in a few weeks. This maintaining business is all experimentation for me.

Dotty342kids · 13/05/2013 08:19

headintheclouds that's pretty much the same loss as me, in a similar time. How much more are you aiming for? I'm conscious that all my clothes are now fitting me nicely. I'd like to lost another 3-4lbs. After that I'm probably still not going to be in a healty BMI range but it'd mean having to ditch all my current wardrobe and buy a new load of clothes which I really don't want to have to do!
Anyway, am a long way off that yet as, like you, loss is quite slow and I'm away on holiday in just over two weeks so that'll scupper me a bit.

saf, that's terrific news! So pleased for you. I've had quite an over indulgent few days so was mightily relieved that I'd not bounced back to 11st something this morning. Was still hovering around 10st12-13. Please let me have seen the back of the 11's Grin

And for the first time on the squat challenge I've got sore thighs this morning and have got a zumba class and 130 squats to face today!

INeedThatForkOff · 13/05/2013 08:48

Surprisingly, after just two days tracking on MFP at around 1950 cals (I'm BFing) I've already got rid of 2 lbs. I'm not really expecting them to stay off, but it shows me how much I was putting away before Blush

Doilooklikeatourist · 13/05/2013 08:58

I weighed this morning , and stayed the same .

Not surprised , I only managed one fast day last week ( was meant to fast on Thursday , but it rained like it was the middle of winter , and I had to stay up til 1 am to collect DD . Just couldn't do it )

Had a bit of a heavy on the wine weekend ( oops ) so pleased to stay the same really .

MayTheOddsBeEverInYourFavour · 13/05/2013 09:03

Morning everyone

I weighed myself today as it has been two weeks since I started and I am 7lbs down Grin I have loads to lose so its not as good as it sounds but I am so happy. It hasn't been a struggle at all, I can't believe something so 'easy' is actually working

So I have to say thanks again to you all, without these threads popping up in active convos I never would have started Grin

Looking forward to my fast day today

GoodtoBetter · 13/05/2013 09:05

Hello all! Today is my 3rd fast day and I'm feeling peckish Grin. Weighed myself this morning (I'm going to weigh weekly) and I've lost a kilo (2lbs) in my first week, so I'm quite pleased with that. I'm not calorie counting on fast days as such because I have to eat with the kids for my main meal and I don't want to eat something different and start ww3 about them not eating theirs (they're 5 and 2). So, I fast til lunch and then I try to eat a small portion minus any carbs and bulk it out with some extra veg. Today is Spanish chickpea stew, which from my googling seems maybe to be about 200 cals if I avoid the bits of chorizo (which I do anyway). Then I'll have some fruit later.Yesterday was DM's birthday and tomorrow is DD's 2nd birthday so there was cake yesterday and there'll be cake tomorrow, in fact I will be baking DD's cake today....maybe I'm mad??

monster54 · 13/05/2013 09:19

30 days and increasing the number of squats with some rest days in there too....google it saf and it'll give you the numbers. I don't know how I'm going to do 55 tonight with such sore thighs!!!

Will give it a bash. My bottom and thighs are my problem areas so hoping this combined with 5:2 or 4:3 for the next couple of weeks to speed things up....Should see some good progress...

I was 11st 3lbs a week or so ago and the 10's are in my sight.....I NEED to get there!

I will be over the moon when I do!!! Has been a good few years since I've seen them!

Badvoc · 13/05/2013 09:31

Started today...
Not ideal as I am feeling pretty rubbish.
Had scrambled egg for bfast as I didn't eat much yesterday.
Am planning on an apple later and a 90 cal cup a soup.
I think that makes 500 cals.
I am also going to low carb on my non fast days as I feel better when I do.

plecofjustice · 13/05/2013 09:51

Just started another 4:3 week. Need more coffee!.......

ponygirlcurtis · 13/05/2013 09:58

Morning all. Weekend was a bit of a feast time, bit scared to go and put it all into MFP tbh! More because I think I didn't eat as much or drink as much as I normally do, but I'm worried that it'll still have been too much. Having said that, I'm finding that I'm not eating breakfast most days now - just not feeling hungry. And yesterday, didn't manage lunch either because DS2 was so poorly that he was howling and couldn't be put down. Have to say, it wasn't as difficult as I thought to make it to 5pm without eating anything bar a couple of breadsticks. But I was sufficiently distracted by lots of howling, maybe that's the trick.

I have to admit I jumped on the scales at my mum's before our normal Sunday dinner. Blush I seem to be a couple of lbs down, but I'm going to try and not weigh in properly till maybe next Friday, as I suspect I'm losing a lot of bloating from water, etc. I must drink more (liquids, not gin!) - when I did Lighter Life, which is basically 400-500 calories a day, we were meant to drink 4l of water a day!!!! peed like a racehorse for months

Fourth fast day today, already had some water and a mint tea, got my tin of soup for lunch and a nice ready meal to bulk out with salad and veg for dinner.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/05/2013 09:58

Ok, I've googled. I'm up for the squat challenge. My sprained SI ligaments are feeling a lot better and I'm hoping if I split these up and go slowly it'll help them rather than hurt them. God knows I need to tone as well as lose weight.
