Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

saf not so much about MM but the other book that was published. She does talk a lot of sense but I do disagree with her 5:2 opinions! Her argument is that if you eat well and don't overdo the carbs, you'll lose weight. I tried her regime a few years back but didn't find it something I could do longer term. I've lost more through 5:2 and am happy to continue with it.

Emilythornesbff · 12/05/2013 16:59

That's it PPC isn't it? It's about being workable.

Emilythornesbff · 12/05/2013 17:00

Although, I'm currently into a bit of 4:3.

INeedThatForkOff · 12/05/2013 17:03

Michael Mosley loves MN doesn't he?! Are the quotes in his book from earlier versions if this thread?

Prawntoast · 12/05/2013 17:06

Well lasted to 1pm when DP said we should go out for a bike ride, his idea of a bike ride is a good couple of hours going up and down hills, no way was I doing that with no food inside me, half an hour of exercise is my limit on a fast day, so had a small lunch, great ride, burnt about 800 calls, will have a light supper so will probably just eat my exercise calories today, that'll do me.

Emily, yes my MIL is an odd one and I wouldn't have told her what I was doing but she asked what I was doing, she is the only one who has had a negative response. My colleagues have been interested, I think they are daunted by the idea of a fast, as I was when I first started, I'll convert yet them yet!!

BsshBossh · 12/05/2013 17:27

The trouser sizing is deliberate because if, with a 36 inch waist, you bought a 36 inch waist jean they would fall down. The waist size has to be smaller to stay up.

BsshBossh · 12/05/2013 17:31

BTW I wrote that comment without knowing what I'm talking about. Was just guessing.

akarucker · 12/05/2013 17:34

I'm just grateful I don't have to buy my 'actual' waist size jeans....

BsshBossh · 12/05/2013 17:41

Me too aka Grin

dines · 12/05/2013 18:01

Hi I did jus post but it was on the other thread.. fast day for me tomorro..missed one last week and have put on 4 pounds:(so really need to have a good week. Has anyo e else had a week off fasting and did tjey find it hard to get bk to it?

ellajayne · 12/05/2013 18:11

I'm trying this diet as of tomorrow. I've done quite a bit of research and it doesn't seem detrimental to my health which is a good thing. I'm planning on fasting on a Tuesday and Thursday for the first week. Is two days a week enough to see results?

INeedThatForkOff · 12/05/2013 18:35

Well, I've eaten this evening and don't plan to have anything more until 5.30 tomorrow when we're having a mushroom and Stilton omelette for tea. I've logged it on MFP already so I don't have to give it a thought tomorrow. Got some EBM put by on case it affects my supply and feel ready to give it a go Smile

monster54 · 12/05/2013 19:15

Ahhh goodo dotty fingers crossed I'll see some improvement in my lower region....I did find 50 tough!! But I do no other exercise!

I'm with you tortoise....I don't say anything to anyone just quietly crack on with my fasts and hopefully it'll keep on melting off!!

I know a few 'associates' have commented in a rather envious tone...I just say watching what I eat!!

swallowedAfly · 12/05/2013 19:42

i've just had a week off dines and have lost weight during it Confused i have been having long fasts as is my way of eating anyway but not reducing calories consciously. it didn't feel right this week so i didn't do it and given i've lost weight i think i must have been hearing my body correctly. god knows.

will let you know if it's hard to get back into when i try fasting tomorrow.

Emilythornesbff · 12/05/2013 19:53

Good luck for tomorrow ineedthatforkoff

I have just eaten homemade sponge cake for my pudding Shock bit have dumped the 2/3 we didn't eat down the waste disposal in prep for to orrow's fast.
Going for a zero fast tomorrow, the. Fasting again on we'd and fri. Shock

BetsyBell · 12/05/2013 20:01

dines I took a week off for holiday and part of me was a bit reluctant but mostly I was looking forward to getting back on track.

ellajayne I've mostly done 5:2 and have lost, on average, 1lb a week. According to a larger survey of intermittent fasters on the www.52fastdiet.co.uk site (sorry haven't got exact link to the results to hand - it's on this thread or no.18 I think) the average loss for 5:2 and 4:3 was 1lb a week. Loss can be sudden or gradual, can slow down or stop, there might be some gains too but the overall trend is down if you stick to it.

BetsyBell · 12/05/2013 20:05

Emily Shock @ cake!

I have stuck to my plan today - indulgent lunch with pudding and wine and nothing more (except hot drinks) until tomorrow lunchtime when I'll have a light salad then soup for supper. Nice and easy 22 hour zero fast Smile.

elastamum · 12/05/2013 20:17

Have been lurking here for a while now. On my 3rd week 5:2 but so far havent lost any weight!

Want to lose the stone I put on after starting HRT a year ago. Prior to that my weight was very stable for about 2 yrs - started HRT, weight went up a stone in 8 weeks then stable again and I cant seem to shift it. I am pretty fit, walk about 5 miles a day (according to fitbit), keep horses and dogs. Have stopped drinking as well, cut down carbs on my eating days, BUT even though I feel loads better, I still cant lose the weight Sad.

Must be doing something wrong (or should I just grit my teeth and try 4;3). Need to crack this before summer comes or I will need to buy more clothes.

Anyone got any suggestions? Grin

Talkinpeace · 12/05/2013 20:31

Ineedthatforkoff
MM did indeed base bits of his book and website on the early variants of this thread.
Many of us on the maintainers are in fact quoted on his website!
BUT
his reserachers did ask our permission first.

He helped us find a way to be healthry.
we made him enough money to keep digging at the food industry
win win in my book

ceebeegeebies · 12/05/2013 20:41

I haven't had any negative comments about it - maybe I have been lucky?? I do have one colleague who asks me how I am doing every week which is starting to get annoying because I am saying the same thing every time, particularly as I am not weighing myself.

Anyway, have had a good weekend...lots of food, chocolate and wine Wink but lots of exercise and I have definitely had a shift in weight as I can tell by looking Smile am so pleased considering what I have eaten on my NFDs, it definitely doesn't feel like a diet.

if anyone is lurking and not sure about giving it a go because of the fear of fasting, I used to fear hunger to the point that I had to have food with me at all times but this WOE has totally changed me and I can actually leave the house without knowing where my next meal is coming from which is a real turning point Smile Smile plus I actually look forward to my fast days (even though I am still finding them difficult)

if only I can crack the mindless snacking that I still do Hmm

postmanpatscat · 12/05/2013 21:43

ellajayne and ineed good luck for fasting tomorrow.

I've done a zero cal fast day today rounded off with a 5 mile run this evening Grin I know I will go to bed dreaming of what I'll have breakfast (and I know there are two pain au chocolat in the cupboard!)

welcome elasta I remember you from the dating thread about 2.5 years ago when I met DP (have nc multiple times since then!) Sorry to hear it's not working for you so far. 4:3 is a step too far for me but some can tolerate it. Are you counting calories on non-fast days?

INeedThatForkOff · 12/05/2013 21:53

I've done a zero cal fast day today rounded off with a 5 mile run this evening

That is hardcore.

I'm hungry already, not quite four hours in Grin

mam29 · 12/05/2013 21:59

Thinking giving this diet a go?

does zero fast mean eat nothing at all for 24hours? thourght it was 500cal a day for 2/7days?

anyone altered and done 3days free eating and 4days fasting?

baffled how it works as surly non fast days people tend to binge?

Talkinpeace · 12/05/2013 22:07

Southeastdweller · 12/05/2013 22:12

elasta Take a good honest look at what you're eating on your NFD's. Maybe do a food diary. I would also consider upping your exercise. 4:3 is as you say another consideration which for me is no problem - give it a go and see how you get on.
