The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Evening all Smile

Well after my non-scale victory last week with my skirt that I could actually do up, I seem to have slid backwards and put on a pair of trousers for work that started digging in by the end of the day which they have not done before Hmm what is going on?? Confused

Fast day today and went 16 hours before having some carrot sticks then a bowl of carrotand coriander soup. Then I had a beefburger and poached egg for tea with some mushrooms and salad...am really hungry and need to go to bed before I give into the Ben and Jerrys in the freezer Wink

bugsyburge · 07/05/2013 22:04

well today's fast went well, nothing at all apart from 3 cups of tea then an intense workout & then a lovely trip to nandos for half a chicken with salad & corn, nicely under the 500

after a good fast i now feel back in control Grin

ponygirlcurtis · 07/05/2013 22:06

Thanks, Southeastdweller - I will go back and read the whole thread when I get the chance need to procrastinate rather than working. Thanks as well for the Boots tip, might have a wee wander down on Friday.

Brambles that's brilliant! I have been at that point before (have put weight on, lost it, etc, most of my adult life), and I will get there again. I hit a landmark birthday in 5 weeks' time, and I really want to feel better about myself.

INeedThatForkOff · 07/05/2013 23:06

Emilythornesbff, I noticed you said you're BFing. How is that working? I'm still BFing 6mo DS and have been holding off starting 5:2. Has it had an impact on your supply? Hope you don't mind the interrogation Smile

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 08/05/2013 03:14

Emily, thanks, I'll pass that on. I hope I didn't make you feel defensive - I agree with you that it shouldn't be at all harmful, you can easily tell if your supply is affected. I'm in awe of you, though. I am always permanently ravenous when breastfeeding!

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 08/05/2013 03:24

And I was seriously grumpy two days ago that I was still the same weight - okay it'd only been ten days, but I've been seriously upping the exercise as well. But then I weighed in this morning, 2lb down, which puts me at 9st13lb. Nice to finally see things moving in the other direction.

SAF do you use a pedometer? 20,000 steps is hardcore! I have just got a fitbit, and I am astounded at how difficult it is to reach the recommended 10,000. Yesterday I took the DDs for a walk, and to kindergym, and we had an at-home dance party, and I puttered around doing housework, and I made it to 8,000 only.

tiredemma · 08/05/2013 06:20

First day yesterday- got up, took dog for a 'brisk' walk- then came home and had boiled egg with some asparagus tips that were left over from Bank Holiday Mondays gluttonous bbq.

Drank water continuously up until 1230 where I then had a tin of thai soup (half a tin actually- 134 calories).

water again all afternoon.

Home- had oven baked cod fillet with some cherry tomatoes.

a cup of soup (79 calories) at about 8.30pm.

Found it reasonably easy- and was really pleased with myself when i didn't relent at times when I would have done so before
ie- walking past the vending machine instead of 'just' getting a kitkat.

normally devouring the biscuits on the side in the nursing office (I did have to ask my staff to 'hide' all these types of food items every tuesday and thursday in future!)

I had my monthly management supervision with my SDM_ normally I would have a bag of crisps as we do it- today I just sipped water.

The greatest test was this evening- DS1 came in with a bag of goodies. I didn't relent- I went into the garage and cried sorted out laundry instead!

all in all really quite manageable.

Sunshine78 · 08/05/2013 07:07

glad I cheered you ask up meant to type sick! Was obviously so weak after circuits! Just had a really bad night so cold then so hot and weeing every 2 minutes hope i'm not getting a uti

Have a good day what ever your eating

swallowedAfly · 08/05/2013 07:42

morning - yesterdays fast was a fail as i started feeling really weird - sort of state i used to get pre migraine and hungry with it so i decided to scrap it. nothing is worth a migraine. not sure if it was sunshine and period and fasting mix or what but i staved it off.

by some miracle i am still the fraction under 11 today (think that's due to getting my period - probably the bouncy gains were premenstrual water retention).

can't fast today as it's my long day at work with lots of meetings and then i have a super fast turnaround to get out to my singing thing. so looking like a total fast tomorrow and through to friday evening will have to be all for this week. hoping that's as good as two separate shorter fasts.

Emilythornesbff · 08/05/2013 07:56

Not at all tortoiseontheeggshell.

Well done tiredemma

ineedthatforkoff I'm finding it ok with breastfeeding. I love it. I feel really good (although hungry) on fast days and on NFDs i eat less than i used to just by accident.
It doesn't appear to affect my milk supply. Dd is 3 months old and is thriving and seems settled. My period has returned but that happened with DS when I was breastfeeding so I can't attribute that to IF.
Sometimes I do worry. I'd hate to compromise her in any way. I always take my vitamins of course. I did one 36 hour total fast but that probably wasn't such a good idea so given up on that now. I'm trying a 4:3 this week as my loss was a bit sluggish. Overall I've lost about 10 Lbs in a month.

Naughty yesterday as I ate chocolate and a couple of biscuits at the end of n otherwise healthy day.
I'm on my second of three fasts this week. So missing my morning cappuccino and muesli. I might bake a loaf tonight and have toast on the morrow Smile. Today I'll be on the apple, peppermint, chamomile and red bush teas (not all one flavour you understand) until a "supper"
of spicy chicken broth. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.
Em.

Oops. Dh has already made my coffee Grin so not a total fast today.

Emilythornesbff · 08/05/2013 08:07

H, forgot to say, someone else pointed out that new mums often go without the odd meal due to being busy anyway. I have always been "taught" that our bodies prioritise milk production over mother's needs, hence the calcium depletion issue in nursing mothers. However, I've not ad any research about fasting and nursning and I understand that in groups where fasting is commonplace (such as Moslems at Ramadan) nursing mothers are "excused" om fasting, so maybe they know something I don't.

Northstarmum · 08/05/2013 08:13

Morning all! After a reasonably good fast day and swapping my lunchtime pizza with colleagues for salad, I was berating myself yesterday for nibbling round the kitchen while getting my bowl of soup for tea and going over the 500. That, combined with carb loading weekend- so I was really surprised to get on the scales this morning and find a new low! So maybe my holiday target weight is in sight after all. Thanks for the support everyone. Don't usually fast 2 consecutive days but going for it today as it fits with dcs after school activities -dh and I won't sit down for a proper meal together anyway later so I can fit in a fast without affecting anyone else. I feel quite motivated after my WI but having tried 2 days in a row before I've always found the 2nd day harder than usual.....

postmanpatscat · 08/05/2013 08:14

Morning all

Well done tiredemma on your fast, you're off to a good start.

saf glad 11 is keeping out of your way!

Fast day for me today, havent fasted since Saturday and I need a fast...how weird is that?! I am just about coping with not weighing myself daily, it's odd though after three months of doing it. I will weigh tomorrow after my fast then put the scales in the guest bathroom out of sight until the next one.

Who is else fasting today?

Chocupid · 08/05/2013 08:29

Hi all,
Just an update, I started this WOE on 15th jan mainly doing 5:2 tried a couple of consecutive fasts and a week of 4:3 especially when i had a few weeks of sticking, but i found it to hard.
i find that progress reports helped me when I was loosing the will so thought it may help people if I post mine. Still a good stone off goal tho.

15th jan 161lbs
30th jan. 153
6th feb. 150.6
13th feb. 151
20th feb. 151
27th feb. 151
6th mar. 149
13th mar. 151
20th mar. 151
27th mar. 153
3rd apr. 150.6
10th apr. 146.6
17th apr. 142.2
24th apr. 139.8
8th may. 134.4

So been slow and steady, (the last 10lbs fell off as my husband left me 4th april so not a true reflection at the end but definitely not a recommend route)

MelanieCheeks · 08/05/2013 08:54

Oh dear Chocupid sorry to hear that. Sad

But well done on sticking to the way of eating - great results there!

Northstarmum · 08/05/2013 08:55

Hugs chocupid

EagleRiderDirk · 08/05/2013 08:55

chocupid well done on the weight loss, though sorry to hear about your husband

sat hope you haven't picked up the bug going round. I've currently got oh and ds suffering badly, though Dd and myself are surviving!

EagleRiderDirk · 08/05/2013 08:56

saf even...

Emilythornesbff · 08/05/2013 09:07

Oh Cocupid I'm so sorry.

But. Excellent weight loss.

Dotty342kids · 08/05/2013 09:09

choccupid really sorry to hear about your DH, but think how sick it'll make him to see the new, slimmer, happier, more fabulous you!!
saf I'm back down in the 10s again this morning, thank goodness, hopefully will stay there after this weeks fasts (another one due tomorrow)

Chocupid · 08/05/2013 09:12

Thank you all, trying not to fall apart must be using up extra energy.
My motivation is now high and im more determined than ever to get to goal for my own self esteem/confidence and to stick two fingers up at OH!

MeNeedShoes · 08/05/2013 09:51

Morning peeps :) Tortoise I agree about the 10,000 steps thing! I got a pedometer years ago when doing WW, went for a massive long trek along the beach and only made it to 5000. On the flip side when I went to the big Tesco I manage over 3000 without even noticing it :o

Fork I was like you, held off until DD was weaning. She's 7.5 months now and I'm mix feeding her so wanted to start while I still have some calorie advantage - and also because when I eventually stop BFing I am going to balloon! I am slightly cross at myself that I ate such rubbish for the first 7 months as I lost over a stone eating crap - so god knows how much I would have lost if I had eaten properly.

Choco hugs Thanks

Fast day today. Am actually hungry already - not a good sign!

bugsyburge · 08/05/2013 10:33

morning all, consecutive fast day here.... made it to 13hours before eating an awful lot of grapesBlush although I have a ham salad planned for tonight so I'll be well under my 500

how's everyone else doing today?

MeNeedShoes · 08/05/2013 10:47

QUESTION: Does anyone else find it hard to drink on fast days? I know I'm supposed to drink lots of fluids but I sometimes find it hard to have more than 3 or 4 drinks on a fasting day. I'm still BFing too. I just don't want to drink.

GoodtoBetter · 08/05/2013 11:05

2nd fast day. Feeling knackered, bad tempered and have a headache. don't think it's related to fasting though...just one of those days. Could kill for a bacon butty and a cup of tea though.......Sad
