The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

SAF the clothes victory is almost better than the scales victory. It will make you feel good all day, enjoy your 'retro dress day'. Grin

Northstar fingers crossed for you, 3lb is possible. Try low carbing on your NF days just for the couple of weeks before hols, that tends to help me when things slow down or plateau.

Hang in there Emily and Dotty it will come off. You can do it!

Fasting today as decided to take advice and postpone it from yesterday. Had to say have a lovely barbie in the garden yesterday with family and enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine while basking in the sun. Was very surprised to find I had lost 0.8lb - bloody amazing!

Have been eating loads of berries (strawberries and blueberries) as they are so yummy at the moment, this is definitely my favorite time of year and it's even better now because I don't have to worry about bulging out of clothes, now the problem is that my clothes are too big Smile- but hey I can live with that.

BetsyBell · 07/05/2013 09:12

Hugs Emily - we all have pouty days, the scales do tell us strange things so do remember to focus on other stuff not just the numbers which don't allow for water retention, milk production etc etc. You are doing brilliantly.

I've just written up my food diary for the indulgent weekend and it's not as bad as I thought and I think that's because I naturally don't have a supper if I've had a big lunch, or I don't do breakfast if I've had a big meal the night before - it's like I'm listening to what my body's telling me or something rather than eating to the clock! So liberating. Scales have been kind too - maintaining well at a lowish weight.

However, exercise - what's happened to that? I'm cycling a lot but I know that although I'm moving it's not burning much in the way of calories, desperately need to inspire myself and find some time to get my running shoes on. Cupboards are bare this morning so have to do supermarket in my tiny window of 'free' time. So although I'm looking slim in clothes, it's all wobbly and needs some effort putting in.

Fast day today - was hoping to have started it from about 4pm yesterday but caved at 8 and snacked on some cheese & crackers so I guess I'll be trying to keep going through to this evening now.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 07/05/2013 09:16

Emily stick with it. It will come off. Also, it is a better WOL/E than all the other diets out there. I was constantly hungry doing weight watchers/slimming world etc.

I'm the same as you, am desperately trying to get down into the low 9's but I'm trying to tell myself to think long-term and concentrate on the health benefits.

Have you tried Jillian Micheal's 30 day shred for exercise? It's only 20mins. I sometimes used to do it at 7pm before dinner when I had put DS to bed.

After my fast yesterday, I'm down a pound to 9.13. However, have 3 days before I can fast again and SO worried about how much I'm going to put on, will try and be sensible with eating. Am focusing on the fact that I do feel better in my clothes. It's actually amazing what a difference just 3 or 4lbs can make to the way you feel.

Hope everyone has a good day-good luck to all the fastersSmile.

Emilythornesbff · 07/05/2013 09:54

Well done betsy and ddh
You're right. It's a much better WOE than other "diets". I will continue.
Just found out (TMI alert) AF has arrived. Surprise, given that I'm bf. I wonder if that has made a difference. (straw clutching?).
Going to have a third fast this week. Now off to make some chicken broth. Smile
NFD today and only managed half an apple thus far.

Miffytastic · 07/05/2013 10:44

Ahhh I love this thread! So much lovely support :)

Food day for me. I made it through yesterday, even though didn't get home til 11.30 pm, I just drank a big glass of soda water with slices of lime in it at the gig.
Been for a run this morning which turned into a walk as I bumped into my best mate on the tow path. {oops}. Just tried on some summer clothes which are loose, I am very much between sizes now, want to be a "proper" size 12 in trousers, so holding out to get down to that, fingers crossed.

Good luck to today's fasters

BetsyBell · 07/05/2013 10:54

Emily I'm pretty sure that does make a difference! And you'll probably be considerably lighter in a couple of days - should clear out everything.

Oh arse I'm hungry already Sad , guess I'll have to sort out a salady lunch for work or I'll be ravenous later.

Dotty342kids · 07/05/2013 11:24

saf, enjoy your day of swanning around in your retro dress, sounds fabulous!

aka don't worry about the weekend gain, my birthday weekend was very similar but think a lot if it is pure bloat as was more or less gone after just one week of 5:2 Smile

Miffytastic · 07/05/2013 11:50

Desperate oooh 9-13! how I long to see the 9s! well done :D

postmanpatscat · 07/05/2013 12:22

Well done losers, stickers and fasters today! Love the sound of that dress saf

emily keep going, 10lbs in 5 weeks is bloody fantastic and it WILL work, I promise. I remember after having DD1 I went back to work when she was 4 mths and lost about half a stone after that, it takes time.

First time in over 10 weeks that I didn't weigh myself this morning. Had an indulgent day out yesterday (about 2000 cals so not without some self-control, and walked >7 miles) and I know I'll have bounced up this morning. I was not prepared for being at goal weight to be so short-lived so it was better not to know! New plan is 36 hour fast once a week, weigh only after that, keep logging on MFP and stick close to TDEE most days, keep running 3-4 times a week. Hopefully that should do the trick to keep me close to goal weight but there will be some trial and error.

EagleRiderDirk · 07/05/2013 13:00

Oh what has the bank holiday weekend done to me? First time since my first fast I've really felt ravenous, I've been through an AF an not felt like this. Trying desperately to wash down hunger with water and tea.

Sunshine78 · 07/05/2013 13:17

Was planning a fd yesterday then dh invited friends round for a bbq so it went straight out the window - he had ago at me for eating what I wanted - tried explaining I could (and although I'm sure I ate more than my daily cals I didn't eat plus 75%!!!) He still doesn't get that any slight over indulges are corrected on the fds!!

Any way scales showed a 1lb loss (1st in weeks) so I am pleased I know with my PCOS its not going to fall off but each lb is a lb closer to goal!

Having a fd today which will be interesting today/in the morning as tonight I am doing circuit training (trainer is ex army) so will be interesting to see how I manage hunger after that!

monster54 · 07/05/2013 14:44

Urrrrghhhh ridiculous weekend of eating and drinking out. Didn't bother with my usual Mon fast and just enjoyed the BH....

I've got a 6lb bounce this morning. Yuck! But I'm fasting well and will enjoy a yum 500cals tonight.

I know that a lot of that will drop now. But it is disheartening. I have a lovely quiet weekend where I can control my eating a lot more and hopefully not have such a big bounce.

On the plus I felt confident in my dresses etc at the weekend and looking at the photos I look a lot slimmer. A lot more definition in my collar bones etc. not bloaty bloat bloat!!

bugsyburge · 07/05/2013 14:47

ah I completely fell off the wagon this weekend, didn't log on mfp at all. fast day today but I'm absolutely starving.... I'm determined to have a good week this week as I go on holiday next week for a fortnight so I need to be bikini ready!!!!

EagleRiderDirk · 07/05/2013 15:12

Why do I always feel thee need to catch up on master chef on fasting days too Confused

dines · 07/05/2013 17:03

Hi everyone I havnt posted in here for while.. iv been doin this woe since the end iv lost a stone and reached my goal weight and im struggling with maintain this. Could anyone tell me some ways of doing this please :)

Itsaboatjack · 07/05/2013 17:03

Well I'm just impressed with those of you who were brave enough to weigh today. I gave my scales a wide berth.

Another one here who skipped yesterday's normal fast, am doing today and I am really hungry!!!

While the dc are eating dinner I think I am going to distract myself with a little clothes trying on session. I'm going to a party on Friday night so hopefully I will find something in the depths of my wardrobe that now fits nicely.

Dotty342kids · 07/05/2013 17:31

itsaboat ooh, good plan. I'm another one in a dress today, that hasn't made it out of my wardrobe for a good 12-18mths so feeling really good about that.
Fasting today, about to eat a nice portion of veggie shepherds pie for my dinner and will hope to see a good 10 "something" again in the morning Smile

dines · 07/05/2013 17:38

Was ment to say the end of march lol

NurseEzzzaChapel · 07/05/2013 17:42

Eeek! This thread is almost full and I haven't finished reading the last one yet, so sorry for not joining in the conversation with this post. Just marking my place and saying I'm 0.2lb off losing two stone since September last year. That is an average of less than a pound per week, but after 8 months of this WoE I'm still enjoying the freedom of fasting and the scales are still going in a downward direction. So if anyone is finding the weight loss is slower than some others who are posting, don't worry about it and enjoy the fact that you aren't deprived of anything on your eating days. Smile

akarucker · 07/05/2013 17:44

Broke the cardinal rule and didn't plan my food today. Have had 250 cal pot of fresh soup, but need some 250 cal dinner inspiration that doesn't involve me going out to the shops, before the bar of chocolate sitting in the cupboard tells me to eat it!

Sunshine78 · 07/05/2013 17:49

Am starving and not done circuits yet buy eaten 500 cals! Could take determination to get though to morning

WipsGlitter · 07/05/2013 18:07

HELP!!

WipsGlitter · 07/05/2013 18:08

Sorry link not working

virginposter · 07/05/2013 18:13

Ezzza congrats on your 2 stone loss (same as me). Nice to see you posting again, I was wondering where you were (asked on maintenance but no-one replied) Grin

Farewelltoarms · 07/05/2013 18:16

So relieved that a bounce is normal. I went from 10.13 and a half to 10.7 in two and a half weekd. Knew it was an artificial low (weighed after a fast) and knew I'd pigged out over weekend, but this morning was 10.11. Arggggggghhhhhh, that's 2.5lb in three weeks. I can lose that normally just by going to the loo.
Find the fasting days ok, I think it's the non ones that are my downfall.
