The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wips - fast on Friday instead?

I have had nothing but tea & milk today. Had a lovely walk at lunchtime and am about to go swimming. Hopefully will make it to tomorrow before eating, but I am hungry.

I have quite a social end of the week which is going to be struggle, so I'm trying to 'bank' some fasting credit.

BsshBossh · 07/05/2013 19:33

Ezzza hello . Glad you're back and happy you're still losing! Hope you've readjusted to life in Blighty?

dines well done on reaching goal. Why don't you hop over to the maintainers thread - lots of help there from people who've reached goal. In the meantime, how are you maintaining, are you still fasting and if so what type of fasting? Are you struggling with over-eating? Details please Smile.

headintheclouds · 07/05/2013 19:33

Hi All,
well done to all who've managed losses.
I was a new low of 10 st 6 on Friday morning ( after a fast) Have had a good weekend and not fasted yesterday .Id already decided to change fast days to tues/ thurs to try and speed up weight loss... so this morning after an indulgent weekend back up to 10st 11 !!! also TOTM. ive fasted all day today, about to have my 500 cals so Im hoping itll come off as quick as it went on...

WipsGlitter · 07/05/2013 19:38

deck I could fast on Friday, but we usually get a take away and I really look forward to it!! Mind you I do really need to cut back at the weekends, and I'm out on Saturday night too. Am losing 1lb a week but if there was less scoffing at the weekend and some running it would be more - I think!

DeckSwabber · 07/05/2013 19:57

I know, Wips. Friday was always my bottle of wine and lardy dinner night, after a full week sitting on my backside at work. Not very healthy!

I do miss my Friday slump but I'm only on my fifth fast and I'm noticing that my desire for crap is a lot less than it was.

frenchfancy · 07/05/2013 20:06

Waves to Ezzza glad you are still around.

I'm on maintenance now, and for the first time since September last I am only doing 6:1 this week. I'm 1lb under my target, and I haven't had a day off work in in about 4 weeks. It is a very long weekend here starting with a bank holiday tomorrow so I'm taking some time off. I'll be back to fasting next Monday, and I will be interested to see what 5 days of eating and drinking does to my weight. Not that it matters I know now that I can get it off again.

Miffytastic · 07/05/2013 20:17

Hi Ezza, thanks for the encouraging update :-)

Did anyone see this article in the guardian about nice fast day recipes?

www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/may/05/diet-feasts-fast-days

The comments are rather entertaining

wonderingagain · 07/05/2013 20:21

So that's 2 weeks of ADF for me, gone down from 14.2 to 13.4. It dropped hugely within the first two days and has bumped along since then. I had two days NFD over bank holiday.

Although it's not been a continuous slope downwards I am very happy that it has stayed down.

I see myself as two people in some ways, the one that loves to eat indulgent food at will, and the one who is in control and keeping the other in check, slightly embarrassed by the other, but also aware of her own controlling nature so not wishing to be too critical. It's a good cop/bad cop situation. My mindset is completely different on each day. I really am not the same person.

BsshBossh · 07/05/2013 20:27

wonderingagain me too (re good/bad cop)!

wonderingagain · 07/05/2013 20:51

I guess it's easier having one personality on one day and the other on the next, normal diets have you doing this throughout the day, every time you look in the kitchen cupboard. Not good for anyone's sanity really.

ponygirlcurtis · 07/05/2013 21:02

Hello 5:2 peoples - I'm not sure what the etiquette is on the thread, can I just jump in and join? Hope so! Smile

BetsyBell · 07/05/2013 21:12

Hello Ponygirl! Yes just jump in, we're a friendly lot, even when we're hungry Wink

Fast day went a bit awry as I decided it was a nice enough evening to take the kids out for a picnic supper, and I nibbled away with them, vaguely calorie counting but conveniently forgetting to count in what I'd eaten earlier... I think I'm at about 800 calories today so not brilliant but not completely disastrous. Feel like I've eaten loads though which is good. Will make sure my next fast day is a proper one.

Sunshine78 · 07/05/2013 21:13

Hi pony girlcurtid welcome

after circuits had to have a banana do slightly over the 500 but actually felt Dick with hunger!

Just hope I can control myself tomorrow!

wonderingagain · 07/05/2013 21:15

I beg your pardon Sunshine! Grin

Southeastdweller · 07/05/2013 21:16

Evening all. Having an unusually draining fast day here. Up at 5am due to my vile anti-social neighbours and couldn't get back to sleep. Manic day at work and did a little overtime followed by a short gym session. Made good food choices and didn't eat until lunchtime but feeling a little like having a cold glass of white wine to take the edge off. I won't, though - making do with a thrilling cup of decaff coffee instead. The booze can wait until tomorrow as well as my sausage roll at work.

Good luck for everyone fasting tomorrow.

akarucker · 07/05/2013 21:19

Oh sunshine you've just brightened up my dull evening!!

EagleRiderDirk · 07/05/2013 21:30

[Shock] sunshine I don't think I've been that hungry Grin

ponygirlcurtis · 07/05/2013 21:32

Ta muchly.

I decided last week that I need to do something about my weight. I am comfort-eating in an out-of-control way, due to various stresses etc.

I happened across the 5:2 info on Mumsnet and it seems to have struck a chord with me. Today is my second Fast Day - did the first on Friday, probably had around 650 calories, today I am at just over 500. I planned in advance and got a tin of low-cal but filling soup for lunch (166 cals), just had a low-cal ready meal (bulked up with extra veg) for dinner (331). Would have been bang on 500 but the extra veg (and milk in tea this morning) will have pushed it over a little. TBH, I haven't found the Fast Days too difficult (yet!). But with it being a bank holiday and all, I've yet to see what it's like combining Fast Days with the everyday stresses of school run/getting dinner ready etc that normally push me towards my comfort eating.

The only problem is I have no idea what I weigh (hazard a guess at around 12-and-a-half stone), but I do know that the size 16 jeans I recently grudgingly bought are already a bit tight. Sad So I reckon I've got about 2-3 stone to lose (2 as a minimum, 3 would be me at my lightest ever).

Anyway, am going to try and get hold of some scales. Will try and update on here as a motivator and get some support to keep going, since I know that kind of thing really does help me. Am getting a bit hungry though so I'll have an early night I think!

Southeastdweller · 07/05/2013 21:40

Welcome pony.

Firstly just wanted to advise to read as much of this thread and previous ones. We are all 'ordinary' folks with similar and same struggles and busy lives and most of us, maybe all, have done really well on this WOL. Our stories are very inspiring, I think.

Also have you got a Boots near you? You could get weighed there - they charge 50p. Save you forkng out for scales.

BetsyBell · 07/05/2013 21:41

Did that help sunshine Shock

miffy the comments in that article really are entertaining!

Bramblesinafield · 07/05/2013 21:42

Grinning at sunshine. I hope I am never that hungry ;). My dh would like me to be starving ;)

Hi pony. The thing that I noticed was the waists on my clothes - they were too tight, but now I have used all of the holes on my belt, which I need to keep my trousers up. :)

fluffypillow · 07/05/2013 21:48

5th fast today. I've lost 5lbs in two weeks. So pleased with that. I'm feeling really good on the 5:2. Gaining back lots of control around food, which feels amazing.

Good luck to all those who are fasting today and tomorrow Smile

DeckSwabber · 07/05/2013 21:49

Heyfluffy - my fifth fast day as well. I will weigh in tomorrow....
