The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I have forgotten that I don't have bathroom scales, so can't see what my starting weight is...do you think it matters?

silverbeetle · 06/05/2013 12:09

Undecided about fasting today, haven't eaten anything yet but DH is going to do a BBQ late afternoon. May try and hang on and just have some lean meat and loads of salad. Trouble is I always associate BBQs with a glass or two of wine Hmm. What to do, what to do?

Good news is that I hit an all time low on Friday 10st 0.8lb but bounced up to 10st 2lb this morning after a couple of meals out over the weekend, that still means I lost 3.8lbs this week which is a bit of a record especially as I've been doing this for about 3 months Confused. Think the last time I was this light was over 13 years ago! I do hope I can keep this going but suspect next week's loss may be very small if anything at all as my body does seem to regulate losses to about a lb a week.

So glad I stumbled across this WOL.
Hope everyone has a great bank holiday.

tiredemma · 06/05/2013 12:16

so inspired by this thread!!

well done everyone.

Im starting tomorrow. x

GreenEggsAndNichts · 06/05/2013 12:52

Goodto personally I'd just get started. Scales will help give you incentive, of course, but no reason to put off getting started while you wait to buy some. Grin

tired sounds good! I'll be fasting tomorrow as well so I'll be posting here, most likely.

silver I usually fast on Mondays but this week I'll be doing Tues and Thurs. Life is short and the weather is good. Just be sure to get your 2x fasts in this week and eat sensibly the other days.

Congratulations doilooklike!

I've just cooked up a batch of salsa fresca, and we'll be having that with tortilla chips and drinks this afternoon. We're off for a village fete in a bit so DS gets a bit of fun, and then this evening I'll be going out to see a show with some girlfriends. There was no way I could have fasted today.

I'll definitely balance it out over the rest of the week.

Enjoy the weather, everyone!

Yes, agree GreenEggs life is too short, will eat sensibly today and fast tomorrow. Sounds like your day is well planned, have a great time.
Off to dig out my flip flops and find the cork screw Smile

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 13:44

Got some cheap scales in the cheap shop on the way to nursery pick up and I'm 75kg (which is 165llbs...I think that is 11st7). So, about what I'd got to when I did 5:2 before, but still too heavy. Will work out BMI in a it but I'm only 5ft6.
Just had a large serving spoon of low GI spag bol without the spag. And 2 small tomatoes chopped up. Will have an apple later while at work. I'm not calorie counting as such, just trying to stick to veg and v small 6q+-uan6tites of protein. I found last time if I had carbs on fast days it was awful...made me so much hungrier. Off to work in a min, back at about 1030pm. Plan is not to eat when I get back.

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 13:46

75kg or 165lbs is 11st 11 actually. BMI is 26.7

nellieloula · 06/05/2013 13:55

Hi everyone. This is a great thread - so much positive news. Hope you don't mind me asking....I was wondering if anyone could shed some light for me though. I've been doing this since January and have lost 6lbs....doesn't seem to be a lot and it fluctuates week to week; lose a few pounds, put them back on etc (think some of this is hormonal so not unduly worried)...I was doing IPD prior to this for 3yrs and lost 3.5 stones. Switched to this and love it but don't understand why the loss isn't greater...still have about 8lbs to go I reckon...any help would be great. thanks.

swallowedAfly · 06/05/2013 13:57

not fasting here today. it is bank holiday and the sun is shining. we're going to have pizza in the garden (oh so classy) and i'm going to have a very unpopular with everyone but me drink of red wine and tonic water. i also like red wine and orange juice. clearly i wouldn't do this to a decent bottle of red - i'm not that criminal.

tomorrow is back to work and fasting. today is to be enjoyed. and i finally got my period so i'm hoping that that magically takes 3lb of bloating off of me Grin

may the force be with those who are fasting - fair play to you.

Miffytastic · 06/05/2013 14:05

I'm fasting, butnot having a full-on bank holiday either, trying to work at home with the kids about, and then off out to a gig later so that will keep me occupied and away from food.
Wondering whether to do 3 fasts this week to jump start the weight loss.

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 14:22

I'm fasting but I'm not in the UK so it's not a holiday for me. Just on my way into work Sad

DorisShutt · 06/05/2013 16:06

Second fast day. I'm at work so it's not been too bad, and I'm hoping to get to 24 hours without food.

Another question though - would chewing gum be counted as "food"? I'm finding that my breath is a wee bit whiffy, and as I'm at work I don't have access to my toothbrush; equally I don't want to eat a breath mint for fear it sparks the food craving!

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 16:08

So many nice bank holiday plans. Mainly laundry for me (and a much needed nap).
No food yet for me (apart from a little milk in my morning coffee). The chicken I'm roasting for dh and ds smells effing amazing. Oh well, I'm sure my lentil broth will be just as delicious.

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 16:11

Grin I don't think chewing gum counts as food.

Dotty342kids · 06/05/2013 16:32

Gosh, well done to all those attempting fasting today! I've had a lovely barbecue although probably not too terrible calorie wise as had a veggie burger and lots of nice salady bits. It was the cider and the Eton Mess that'll have screwed me over Grin

Still, fast day tomorrow will get me back on track though there are lots of nice BBQ leftovers that I'm going to have to resist. Might send them all with the kids in their packed lunches instead, to remove them from harms way!

MeNeedShoes · 06/05/2013 16:47

Well, did a mini 23 hour fast from 3pm yesterday till 2pm today when we were out for lunch. Just had a piece of toast this morning - then had delicious 3 course lunch in lovely restaurant. Nom nom :)

Finest moment: managed to bake last night whilst fasting and did not eat a thing! Didn't even lick the butter icing off the mixer blades Wink

I definitely do feel more wakeful in bed at night when fasting - mind is just very clear and alert so does take longer to sleep. The trade off is I also feel wakeful and alert during the day too so that's okay :)

Well done Postman and other target nearers / hitters!

Miffytastic · 06/05/2013 16:50

Just pondering... do you think skimmed milk in tea would mean you were breaking a zero fast?

ELR · 06/05/2013 17:05

Hi everyone. I have not fasted today as usual will d tomorrow and Thursday instead. I did skip breakfast yesterday though. I have been eating like a pig these last 3 or 4 days not particularly ad stuff just more have felt quite hungry!
saf good you are still in the 10's and noticed you came on so should be anytime for me too, actually due today but usually a day or late. That's prob why I've been eating loads.
Well done postman on getting to goal and you too dotty on staying in the 10's. I'm hoping o get o he 9's in the next few weeks.
aka the smoothie sounds nice I will try it and add a table spoon of oatbran to make t extra filling!
Anyway think I will go and have a chill axing nap after my 1/2 bottle of wine and picnic in the park I'm nicely merry.

ELR · 06/05/2013 17:08

Sorry for the typos not sure if its the wine or the ipad!!
miffy yes it counts as calories!

Dotty342kids · 06/05/2013 17:26

ELR thanks for support, am hoping I'm still in the 10s tomorrow after a foodtastic day or two!
No doubt there will be lots of us normal Monday fasters fasting tomorrow Smile so catch up with you all then.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 06/05/2013 18:46

Congrats doilook!!

Haven't been on for a couple of days, so not up to date with where everyone's at, but hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the sunshine Smile.

Decided to fast today, thought it might be difficult with DH and DS around but actually we've been busy in the garden, I've decluttered the garage and played cricket, football and been on the trampoline with DS and done another couple of calorie-burning jobs!

Had a few carrot sticks and a couple of spoonfuls of low fat houmous at 3ish and have just made a chicken stirfry but had a miniscule portion. Have also had two coffees with a bit of 1% milk, one low cal hot chocolate and tons of water.

Have mother in law coming tomorrow till Friday so will probably fast again Friday.

Am concerned as I see to be losing and gaining the same 3lbs. Am bouncing between 9.12 and 10.1. Was hoping after trying 4:3 last week, I would get down to 9.11 but it didn't make any difference. Am thinking I should up my exercise. Haven't had much time for it recently but maybe it will help?

myjoy · 06/05/2013 20:46

Hi everyone,
Hope you had a lovely bank holiday. Not in the UK so fast day, but trying something different. After a hard cycling class this morning I felt like having breakfast so used today's calories and will not eat more till tomorrow a.m.. Will see how it goes.

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 21:45

well that's my first fast day since September finished and it hasn't been too bad. I think work helped take my mind off it. I had no breakfast, so fasted 16hrs til lunch when I had 2 small tomatoes, a very small portion of low GI spag bol (but no pasta). Then an apple at work and just had a banana now. I don't know the calories of the spag bol sauce but I'm failry sure I was within the fasting calories limit.
really looking forward to eating tomorrow Grin

Southeastdweller · 06/05/2013 21:47

Huge congrats postman. Please don't abandon us now you're maintaining!

Well done doilook. I always think of the film of Shirley Valentine when I hear about the F plan Grin

desperate yes I would up the exercise a little, or do consecutive days or a week. Another explanation could be you going over your TDEE.

I went a bit O.T.T yesterday - snacked on a chocolate bar, some biscuits and had a double gin and tonic. Today I've done a mini fast by accident! Had a big breakfast and didn't feel like having much else after, probably because I was so active this afternoon and still feeling quite full from yesterday. Just had a nice light dinner of veg, reduced fat hummus, and some puy lentils that were recommended up thread. If today's compensated for yesterday then great - if not then I'm not bothered because I agree with what's been said today about life being too short!

Fasting tomorrow as usual so will check in with everyone in the evening after I've been to the gym.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 06/05/2013 21:56

Thanks southeast. I don't think I'm going over my TDEE but I could be wrong, I do have a tendency to snack on chocolate, biscuits etc. Am really going to try and watch it this week and will try and fit in some excercise (am sure my MIL won't mind me doing a quick shredGrin).

GoodtoBetter-well done on your first day back!
