The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Have a Wine for me doris please? [fast day]

Itsaboatjack · 03/05/2013 20:39

BVB do you have any tips on how not to be an evening snacker? It really is my most problematic time. I've had my 500 cals and am now sitting here ready to chew off my own arm. Think I may even have to resort to getting the ironing board out to keep my hands busy.

Dotty342kids · 03/05/2013 21:14

I am too, it's very hard to resist. My strategies are either not to have anything tempting in the house Smile or to go and have a bubble bath with my book!

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 21:33

Tips? Not really, before IF my weight loss regime was calorie restricting and eating as healthily as possible. Evening snacks were axed and eventually I stopped wanting them. I realised I preferred going to sleep with an emptier stomach (helpful with IF!). Wine of course messes up the no snacking so I try not to drink too often either. And I avoid buying the bad snacks (mostly).

If I do eat it's most likely to be a fruit yogurt or a small dish of raw nuts & dried fruits.

Realising how bad the naughty evening snacks make me feel was a revelation too. Turns out the short term pleasure was not worth the grotty, groggy, sluggish mornings.

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 21:40

My main snacking problematic time is between 4pm and 6pm, haven't worked out how to curb that at all Confused so much so that I often have to just not eat dinner as I've already foraged so much whilst pottering* around the kitchen.

Advice please: this could make the difference as to whether I eat the piece of cake in front of me or not Wink

I have worked out my total daily energy expenditure, using the recommended website, to be approx 3000 cals. Is that really what I should be aiming to eat on NFDs? Seems quite a lot, that's why I thought I'd ask. I am 6'1, about 15 st and exercise 3 - 5 times a week, so am pretty sure I have worked it out right, but thought I would have to eat less than that to lose weight...

Loving this thread, it's so motivational. Thanks everyone!

ELR · 03/05/2013 21:59

betsy that me is bad for me too, I've started brushing my teeth when I get in from the school run which has helped a little or I have 4 pistachios 2 almonds and 4/5 strawberries chopped up with a cup of tea.

ELR · 03/05/2013 22:05

mttum I found that tdee calculator a little generous Googled tdee calculator and used the one called fitness frog it's more accurate I think.

ELR · 03/05/2013 22:08

mttum ignore that as the one linked at the beginning of thread s showing the same as fitness frogg now maybe it was another one I was looking at! 3000 does seem quite high maybe stick to 2500 if you are a man or 2000 for a women.

myjoy · 03/05/2013 23:02

Hi Everyone! I'm returning to this thread and WOE after many months away. Fasting today and struggling a bit, but thankful for everyone on here.

mttum · 03/05/2013 23:29

Thanks ELR. I had the cake and it took me to just over 2500 so will stop now!

Itsaboatjack · 03/05/2013 23:42

Made it through the night, the only extra cals I had was some milk in a cup of tea :)

Finished work now and looking forward to my bed. Night all.

Welcome back myjoy

Endofmyfeather · 04/05/2013 00:32

I was another big evening snack culprit and seem to have got out of the habit for now. Some things I've been doing which have helped have been:

  • brushing my teeth early on (good tip from here!)
  • going out for a walk/to play tennis so I'm physically out of the house
  • restarting my old love of colouring in (combats hand hunger by keeping hands busy!)
  • showering
  • painting my nails

Most important of all though, it's being more mindful about my eating. Being aware of my risk times and either combatting it by not buying the worst items (crisp addiction!) or buying smaller/just one each time. Rather than family size packs which I could - and have - polish off in one sitting.....

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 04/05/2013 04:05

I've taken up jigsaw puzzles, even though it makes me feel about ninety.

Am I the only one hoping to see results, however modest, from just fasting & not tracking cals on other days? I thought that's what MM did, and others say they weren't tempted to binge on Nfds. I can't be doing with every day calorie tracking, the attraction for me of this is that dieting doesn't dominate my life, you know?

Endofmyfeather · 04/05/2013 04:25

Haha tortoise, I was going to suggest jigsaw puzzles. Another change I made just occurred to me while eating my dinner - I no longer eat my meals on the (embarrassing bad habit alert!) sofa. I eat my meals at the table and make that my eating routine. Before, I felt like every time I sat on the sofa I should be eating. Sounds obvious, but I guess I am a very psychological eater!

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 05:59

tortoise i don't count calories on non fast days. i have stalled a bit after a stone and probably calorie counting would help but i'm not prepared to 'live' on a diet iyswim.

in the end yesterday i did a 24hr total fast but then ate over 500cals once i started. i think i only had about 1200 though so well under my tdee which was about 2000 last time i checked so that will have to do for this week. i'm afraid the remains of the home made cookies got me.

will brave the scales soon to see the damage.

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 06:10

back to 10st12.

oh to not bounce back to over 11 over the weekend!

akarucker · 04/05/2013 07:14

saf in sending '10' vibes your way for the weekend. I know how much it would mean to you to not bounce back to 11.

akarucker · 04/05/2013 07:15

'I'm' not 'in' - use preview!!!

Bramblesinafield · 04/05/2013 07:57

Same vibes saf. I'm currently bouncing around 10 9, but having seen a 10 8 the other day am a bit sad its not the same or lower today post fast. Still, better than bouncing around 11 4+ which is what I was doing prior to all this.
Evening munching, keep fluids up, I also save a little bit calorie wise to have a few oatibix minis halfway through the evening.

BetsyBell · 04/05/2013 08:04

ELR Toothbrushing is a good idea. My snacking is usually healthy but I can't seem to stop at just a few nuts and pieces of fruit! But at least when it goes awry I've got the option of eating less at dinner. Problem is I can't avoid being in the kitchen at that time most days. I do generally eat mindfully but it would nice if I could just wait till 6 when I have dinner! I'll redouble my efforts next week Smile

applegate · 04/05/2013 08:26

oh dear, I broke my fast yesterday with a glass of wine! The sun was out and before I knew it I had drunk it, I did have a big salad too so stuck under (just) 500 calories but I am aware that the point of fasting is not really to drink wine on fasting days (blush)

ceebeegeebies · 04/05/2013 08:45

MTTUM - 3000 sounds about right to me as the exercise will give you extra calories each day. I am 5ft 8, 14 stone and exercise 3-5 times a week and most TDEE calculators show 2500 for me and you are a bit taller and weigh a bit more.

Quick side effect question. Is anyone else suffering from heartburn, particularly on NFDs? I rarely have it but seem to be getting a lot since starting this WOE. I was up from half 3 this morning feeling really uncomfortable Sad am wondering if it is because my stomach doesnt like the amount of food that I am putting in it on NFDs?? Last night I had half a thin pizza and some garlic bread for tea plus some wine which is not a great deal of food (for me anyway Wink ) and never caused me heartburn before. Any thoughts?

Itsaboatjack · 04/05/2013 08:48

tortoise I do like a jigsaw, I may have to go and buy one. I also like the sound of colouring.

My weaknesses are toast with butter and bowls of cereal so I can't really not have those thongs in the house. I think over the weekend I'll try making sure I have some healthier snacks in like berries and unsalted nuts. And also focus on fluids more, I'm very good during the day but not always so much in evening.

Thanks for the tips :)

Emilythornesbff · 04/05/2013 08:54

I have had indigestion on the odd nfd. Not sure whether it's caused by the 5:2 though.
Nfd today but feeling ok.
