The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all! Some great new lows being recorded, well done everybody.
4-6pm is my 'starving' time too. I find lo fat cottage cheese (usually eaten from the pot in front of an open fridge door!) helps me. It's not something that sets me off wanting to eat more such as fruit, nuts, baked goods, but is really satiating & keeps me going.
I love doing jigsaws but we only do them at Christmas, think I might dig one out too, great idea Smile

DeckSwabber · 04/05/2013 08:58

On fast days I eat in the morning because I don't think I could cope at work otherwise. I have a desk job and everyone around me eats constantly. To manage that I have a cup of vile green tea - reminds me that I'm fasting - and go for a walk at lunchtime.

In the evening I'm not eating at all but I go swimming and beg my children to finish eating by the time I get back!

My problem is not being able to sleep well during a fast. I guess my tummy is not used to being empty. So I might have to rethink and eat something in the evening.

9.12 this morning! Hurrah!

mttum · 04/05/2013 09:19

apple, I wouldn't have thought it would matter if you got your cals through wine or celery - respect to you for only having one glass! my problem would be that one glass would lead to another, then another, then some crisps and peanuts and finally sending out for an Indian takeaway before clearing out DD's chocolate drawer!. That's why alcohol is off the agenda for me, at least for a while...

Thanks cbgb's, just wondering, and what you say makes sense. Like other recent posters I am hoping not to become a calorie counting fanatic, but I do see this as a bit of a re- education for me and at the moment I am trying to consciously arrive at a "feel" for what is the right amount to be aiming for on NFDs.

itsaboat, I agree you shouldn't get rid of the thongs Wink. Seriously, on the subject of fasting, I find it easier to do zero cals on fast days. That way food is just out of the equation, and I don't have to fret about it. I find that when I am on an eating day i am constantly thinking about what to eat next, which is what I was like all the time before this WOE came along. Hoping that will change over time, as my body is re educated. Also realise my approach to snacks won't work for everyone, but may be worth a try for some.

BetsyBell · 04/05/2013 09:34

apple sounds like you kept to the 500 cals so no worries! Well done.

Deckswabber How long have you been fasting? If not long then I would think your body will get used to the night time emptiness after a few weeks. I sleep soundly after a fast day now but it didn't start out that way.

greenfig Hmm, cottage cheese is one of the few foods I cannot stomach but I was very satisfied after eating a cold boiled egg the other day so maybe that's something for me to try as a regular thing.

ceebees if I over eat on nfds I feel horrific. Mostly I remember but some weekends I forget, pig out and suffer. Greasy carbs are definitely the worst culprit followed by salty snacks and cheap chocolately things. It's all a learning curve. To me it feels like the better you treat your body with decent wholesome food and exercise the more it rejects the crap.

Sounds like your bounces are getting lower though Saf?

mttum · 04/05/2013 09:43

Sorry, final para of previous post should have read "on the subject of snacking". Hope that makes more sense Smile.

Good luck to anyone brave enough to be fasting on a Saturday!

DeckSwabber · 04/05/2013 09:59

Betsy I've only done four fasts so I'll give it another week or two.

I don't think I could manage a fast at the weekend - too many big family meals and shopping to do!

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 10:05

god knows betsy - i'm all over the place! i've ranged from 10.11 and 11.2 this week - sometimes nearly traversing that gap overnight. 11.2 is 'high' for me and i was shocked to see it. 10.11 is a previous low i saw before a couple of weeks back.

i'm just going to keep going and see what happens. will do a total fast on monday - ah! no more likely tuesday forgot it was bank holiday. i could do sunday i guess. whatever! my next one will be a total fast and i'll see where that takes me.

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 10:06

thanks for the vibes btw Smile good vibes always gratefully received.

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 10:08

oh AND i shall see what happens when my period turns up. sometimes that equals finally shifting down a range.

Dotty342kids · 04/05/2013 10:45

saf fingers crossed for both of us that we stay in the 10s!
I'm fasting today as won't be able to do my normal Monday fast as got family coming over for barbecue that day. My plan for today is to get out in the garden and stay there! Got lentil / butternut squash curry planned for tonight's tea - that plus one chapatti = about 400 cals.

Wishihadabs · 04/05/2013 10:57

Deckswabber I have a banana in the morning of a fast day (80 cals). I find this gives me enough energy to function at work. Then either a cuppa soup at lunch or 1 250 cal meal around 4pm.

Wishihadabs · 04/05/2013 11:01

58kg this week btw (62 when I started) that's 9" 2.8 in old money. BMI 21. Aiming for 56 (was 54 at slimmest ever)

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 11:05

not fasting today but going to try to be healthy-ish. also plan is to keep moving all day. taking ds to the hairdressers in a bit then will walk to the garden centre for chook supplies then walk home and clean out the chooks before taking the dogs out for a good walk. we can stay in these tens dotty !!! good luck fasting today.

made ds a bacon roll this morning - he had bacon at my sister's not long back and claimed to like it so have to seize whilst the iron is hot to get another source of protein into his diet. the boy is not a meat fan and there is only so much peanut butter and egg you can feed him. i did one of those part baked petite pan rolls in the oven for him and grilled some bacon and wasn't at all tempted myself. i just don't get hungry this early in the day. really is the night time that is my downfall.

forgot to share my lovely news this week which was that 4 different people on separate occasions at work asked me if i had lost a lot of weight Grin why, yes actually i've lost over a stone Wink it is nice to have people actually notice.

BetsyBell · 04/05/2013 13:05

saf Weight loss compliments are fab! Did they ask you your secret? I've been evangelising about 5:2 loads in the last couple of weeks - since finally taking off the winter jumpers and coats.

I had a nice NSV today too - tried on a pair of brightly coloured capri-type trousers, something I've always wanted to wear but never looked nice in them due to weight concentrating on thighs. They looked good enough and I bought them. Only supermarket cheapies as I'm not prepared to spend decent money while my weight is still changing!

postmanpatscat · 04/05/2013 13:19

wishIhadabs you must be about the same size as me...I started at 63.7kg ten weeks ago, now 55.9. I have dabbled with the idea of aiming for 54kg but decided 55.3 (8st 10) is plenty low enough, especially as my boobs have virtually disappeared in the last couple of weeks and I have to go and buy new bras for the second time in two months!!

saf and dotty well done, hope you stay in the 10s. saf glad people have noticed. I was down 16lbs before anyone said a thing to me, DP was the only one who could see it (and now he is mourning the loss of my boobs Blush )

bvb capri trousers sound nice...weatherman today said Monday should be the hottest day this year so far, so get out there and show yourself off!

I don't know whether I'm fasting today or not...DD and I off to the beach on Monday and definitely not fasting then. Could do Tuesday and Thursday this coming week instead of Mon and Weds. Haven't eaten a thing yet so I'll decide later!

Wishihadabs · 04/05/2013 13:29

Yes postmanpat my boobs have deflated somewhat, but wearing 27" jeans. Going to get measured this week. I am working next weekend so fasted Tue and Thursday last week, was thinking of doing Friday and Sunday week coming. Does anyone think itmmatters not fasting for 7 days ?

ceebeegeebies · 04/05/2013 17:14

Well I plucked up the courage to weigh myself at the gym this morning...it wasn't pleasant Sad 14st 6lbs which is 6lbs heavier than I thought! As I am fairly sure I have lost some since starting this WOE 3 weeks ago, I dread to think what it must have been Sad

Anyway at least I am going in the right direction and hopefully put a stop to it!

what a lovely feeling when people comment positively on your weight, gives you a proper warm glow doesn't it? am not expecting any comments for quite some time Wink

Dotty342kids · 04/05/2013 17:28

saf ooh, so nice to get compliments / questions! I've had a few too, even when I've been mid "stall" which really helps to keep motivated
Betsy well done on the capri pants. My similar NSV is to wear a fab slinky leopard print dress (made casual thanks to leggings / pumps as opposed to vamping it up with heels!). It's definitely my "I couldn't have worn THIS six months ago item. We should all have one!
ceebeegeebies, try not to worry, you have undoubtedly lost some so now focus on that as your last heaviest weigh in and enjoy watching it come lower and lower Smile

fluffypillow · 04/05/2013 17:48

I've completed 4 fasts so far, each for over 20hrs with no food at all. I can't believe I managed it Shock It's just not something I thought I could do! I am really loving this WOE.

I started off at 13st 3.8lb and this morning was 13st exactly (in 10 days). I am so pleased with that, as I never lose weight quickly, even on strict diets.

The way I'm thinking about food and hunger is changing drastically too. I know now that most of the time when I feel 'hungry', it's really head hunger, or mouth bordem Grin

I have given up snacking in the evening, and make the last thing I have a mug of Horlicks at about 8pm, after that it's lots of fruit tea. I used to snack on chocs and rubbish all evening, then go to bed really uncomfortable. I don't crave treats in the evening anymore, I'm kind of liking the 'empty feeling', which I was actually quite scared of before Confused

You are all such an inspiration to me, and I wouldn't have known about this WOE if it wasn't for this thread, so thank you Thanks

I really think this will change my life for the better. I am starting to really get excited about feeling good about the way I look after so long Smile

PoshVoice · 04/05/2013 18:00

Good god do these 5:2 threads move fast, I've not posted for a week or two and I've got 60 odd pages to read thru.

Little progress report :

Started 5:2 at New Year's Day, weight 86+kg bmi 28+, on Thursday I'm down to 75.3 and a bmi of 25.2.

Recently started skipping lunch as well as breakfast on fast days, interesting experience going without food for so long. First time I started feeling very cold and shaking around 1900 hrs. Now I can manage that time pretty much ok (do still get a chill) , still unable to fast the entire day though, maybe in a couple more weeks.

Does anyone know how you can predict your ideal weight? Is there such a thing?

postmanpatscat · 04/05/2013 18:11

posh there's some sort of calculator on the Dukan Diet website.

swallowedAfly · 04/05/2013 18:59

dukan calculator is depressing imo - can just tell you you're doomed to be fatter than you want to be all based on a very dubious calculation/formula.

think it's better to watch and see how it goes and how you look at each goal point bearing in mind bmi of course.

very active day and not overeaten thus far. must keep it up tonight.

akarucker · 04/05/2013 19:23

Small victory - may not seem that big, but we just had an Indian takeaway, and for the first time (ever, I think), I left half on my plate because I was full! Now, usually I would reach being full at about the same stage, but I would usually carry on until my stomach almost hurt with popping.

So, I'm three months into this and today is the first time I've felt that I've had full control on a NFD. Maybe this could be a sign that I'm ready for 5:2 (instead of ADF)???

Dotty342kids · 04/05/2013 19:24

Gosh I am knackered after six hours full on fence painting and digging in the garden! It's one way to keep your mind off food on a fast day Grin. Reckon I'll have burnt a healthy few calories as well as resisting food till 6.45 when I had a lovely veg curry.
I am going to eat, drink and be merry for the next two days now!
Hope you all have a lovely, sunny bank holiday Smile

ELR · 04/05/2013 19:28

Well I have calculated my ideal weight by looking at a bmi of 22 then choosing somewhere within that range. Bit if you google ideal weight loads of suggested formulas one up.
