The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

ceebee definitely an NSV! Well done. I'm only slaving to the scales whilst I'm mega overweight. When that comes down I'll be looking for more NSVs as signs of progress. I always put more faith in clothes size than weight. Especially when exercise is involved.

peplum41 · 03/05/2013 11:38

Morning all Smile

Thanks bready for the mimi link, but one thing it made me realise, how great these threads are for staying motivated, as lot of questions asked (from non regular posters) are frequently asked and usually answered on here. I liked her take on looking at the woe medium term, patience with a plateau, and being conscious of your eating as in not too many treats- my downfall the last few weeks!

elr Pilates is great if you stick with it, again that's my downfall. But when I do get the bug, my posture improves, I feel as though I want to hold my stomach in all the time, and my knackered back aches less.
Well done on your new loss!

monster congrats on the healthy BMI, a big help towards looking nice in your family photo.

First ever 24 hour fast, but it got hard about 3pm, which reminded me of the first few fasts. Felt sick and headachey and just sat in the back yard for a few minutes to warm up. The feeling passed after about 20 minutes and by 4:30 I felt euphoric and excited as I was cooking tea with the radio on. Id worked out that I could have lentils cooked in reduced fat coconut milk, with added curry spices and red peppers, garlic, cherry tomatoes, onions on a bed of broccoli for 500 cals. Dead nice, dead filling.Grin

desperateHW you seem to be doing really well, and appear to have the mindset of a stayer! Brew away!

Barbie1 · 03/05/2013 11:43

dotty are you sure you aren't just a very dirty person? Maybe you washed away 1lb of dirt Grin (joking by the way)

So many positive stories here, I'm truly motivated by you all Smile

3rd fast yesterday, I weighed this morning and I have lost 1.7kg (3.7lb I think) since last Thursday which was my first fast. I so want to be 54 kg by the time we leave paris and relocate to Korea. We have a two week trip back to uk where I plan to completely overhaul my wardrobe and fill it will lovely fitted clothes Smile

The only down side to all of this is the effect it's having on my sleep, I managed 3 hours last night yawn....

Hope you all have easy fast days and happy bank holidays.

peplum41 · 03/05/2013 11:44

Hi ohthemanatee come on out from that lurking cupboard. Smile

monster54 · 03/05/2013 11:46

Yer yer ceebeee loving that NSV!!!!

Those are some of my faves!!!

postmanpatscat · 03/05/2013 12:13

Well done monster and ELR

Perhaps dotty you shouldn't scrub so hard next time?!

Welcome manatee

Great start barbie

Up and down like a yoyo for me this week, last night's curry took it's toll but gym tonight so the scales will be back down again in the morning. Now I'm off to have my school dinner, yum!

akarucker · 03/05/2013 12:25

Yikes virginposter - you mean not obsessively weigh myself every single morning, and take that weight as gospel, and live my day by it?? Not sure if I'm ready for that...I know you're right though Grin

Dotty342kids · 03/05/2013 12:43

monster amazing feeling huh? So pleased for you Smile
Someone upthread spoke about changing things around to kickstart a loss if you've stalled. I'd been on a 3-4 week stall prior to my birthday weekend. Had three days of complete overindulgence and put on 3lbs!
However, came back and did usual 5:2 regime and lost not only the 3lb birthday gain but another 1-2lbs on top of that.
So, for me, it seems as though over indulging and then going back to 5:2 somehow got it all moving again. Weird. Good. But weird!

Barbie that was my first thought too..........."just how dirty am I"? Great initial loss for you - well done.

dogsdays, glad that you're delurking and well done on your losses, that's really lovely to read.

headintheclouds you're so right. If I get disillusioned about the slowness of my loss I just look in the mirror and know that I already look so much better than I did 4 months ago. I feel good, fasting feels good, and if it takes another six months or more to get to a weight I want to be at, then so be it!

ELR · 03/05/2013 12:49

Sorry guys but bring thick what does NSV stand for?

Dotty342kids · 03/05/2013 12:50

Non scales................... something?

Miffytastic · 03/05/2013 13:21

non scale victory?

headintheclouds · 03/05/2013 13:23

It's non scale victory I think ( which I'm unlikely to see asNFD today and I'm in Mc Donald's eating 3 chicken selects) whilst checking out Mumsnet

ELR · 03/05/2013 13:36

Oh ok makes sense now!

bugsyburge · 03/05/2013 14:25

afternoon all, well done on many many losses this week!!!

I've been struck down with a sickness bug this week which has made me repulse at the thought of eating ...consequently I've had 3 fast days back to back!!! I'm hoping it doesn't have a negative effect on this week's weight loss...I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to weekend of lovely food though as Dh and I are going to a Michelin restaurant that we have been dying to try so i can't wait for that Smile

I hope everyone has a lovely bank holiday & manage to not over-indulge too much Wink

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 16:32

Hello everyone, what a lovely load of stories on here today Smile

I'm fasting today and doing better than usual. I had a carby carb day yesterday and quite a late meal for me so I realised I would have to not have my usual lunch to get the number of fasting hours up. My afternoon at work has been fine (the sun makes it so much easier I think!), I've not been wanting to have my usual post school/work pigout snack so am thinking I'll try and push through now until much later - aiming for 22hours total fast and aim to have fewer than my 500 allocation. However, I know that once I start eating the hunger will awaken and I'll want to eat as much as I can.

I can see the attraction of just not eating till tomorrow but I don't think I'm ready for that yet!

swallowedAfly · 03/05/2013 16:45

nice to read some successes Smile

have gone calorie free so far and kept busy. nearly caved a minute ago but managed to drink a glass of water and determine to wait.

think i will have a coffee in a minute -have had way less caffeine than usual and hopefully a black coffee will curb the desire to eat a bit.

trying to remember i can eat tomorrow.

my friend had forgotten about lunch so no temptation there.

Dotty342kids · 03/05/2013 16:57

ooh, well done saf nearly there! Are you going calorie free all day or having some dinner?

Prawntoast · 03/05/2013 17:26

head, I don't think I have done anything different other than change my fast days. I don't calorie count on non-fast days, I don't know what my TDEE is, I was attracted to this WOE as it offered a lack of deprivation on the non fast days, I don 't go mad though. I wonder whether as you lose weight your stomach shrinks further and you just don't eat as much. I would though assume that the lighter you get the lower your TDEE so I would have thought that it all balances out! I have always had a loss every week, ranging for 3.5lbs in the first week to 0.5lbs. I do weigh every day and my weight during the week goes up and down, usually within a range of 1-2 lbs, but so far on a Friday (official weigh in day) it's been on a downward trend. I would certainly give a change of fast days a go, maybe it just jolts your body by being different. If my loss slows down again I will probably change the days again and see whether it does anything.

I've probably cursed myself and I'll put half a stone on this week!

Bramblesinafield · 03/05/2013 18:02

Wll done everyone, particularly those who have hit an important milestone,

Just breaking fast. It's easier to wait until evening now, as when I eat I'm hungry afterwards!

I plateaued for a month, but am on the way back down (I hope). Yesterday's carbs and wine fest would certainly be a body shock!

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 18:23

Well I managed 21 hours total fast (just herbal tea and water). Have now had 350cals so some spare if I need something before bed. Getting through a whole work day on zero calories is a first for me so feeling quite chuffed.

swallowedAfly · 03/05/2013 19:03

i will eat dotty. i did a total fast on tuesday so hoping a 500 will suffice today though doubt i'll manage to re-lose the gain itms. i'm hovering very close to my period now though so am hoping that will help.

how did you find it betsy? i find it quite easy at work as i'm busy and distracted. well done on 21hrs.

DorisShutt · 03/05/2013 19:40

Can I ask a daft question?

I've just weighed myself (depressing much?!) and stuck the correct details into the TDEE calculator from the OP - it's given me a BMR of 1551, and a TDEE of 1861 (from memory as am on phone). Is it the TDEE I need to stick into MFP as my target or the BMR figure?

Please let it be the TDEE or my Friday night Wine is kaput!!! Sad Grin

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 19:52

Saf It's been fine, the nice weather helps but I feel cold and tired now. I don't work many hours so it's fine when I'm there as I'm flat out but all the bits around it that cause trouble. Luckily, I've retrained myself to be an evening snacker so I'm safe now.

I'm quite pleased to have managed a day without caffeine too, feel like I've been relying on caffeine over food energy lately.

Doris Don't panic, it's the TDEE you need to focus on!

DorisShutt · 03/05/2013 19:55

Yay!!! Thanks Thanks

BetsyBell · 03/05/2013 20:01

retrained myself not to be an evening snacker [doh]
