The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yay! Same weight after a NFD of seriously calorific food.

Is anyone else here doing alternate day fasting? It's up and down but really working for me.

Cutting calories by half has meant drastic weight loss for me. I've lost 10lb in 10 days, which sounds drastic but is not considering my original weight. I really want to lose another 9lb in 3 weeks. Then I will be back to my post-baby pre-comfort eating stage. To get to my pre-baby weight I will need to lose another 2 stone. I'm hoping to get halfway there by August.

Dotty342kids · 03/05/2013 09:13

Betsy I did have the cake when I got in from my meeting last night. Yum!
Seem to have dropped another lb whilst in the shower this morning Grin. 10st 13 before shower, 10st 12 after shower.
Think I might need some new scales!!

Paintingrainbowskies · 03/05/2013 09:18

Morning all, well done on all the losses! Everyone is doing much better than me!

I've been doing this for 3 months now, in total I've lost 10 pounds but today I am exactly the same weight I was 4 weeks ago. There have been some fluctuations. I think this is my body settling in. I suppose quarter of a pound loss a week is better than nothing!!!

I am over weight but I'm lighter than I've been in years so I'm just consoling myself that this is a manageable way of eating for life instead of my usual diet for 3 weeks then put it back on!

Anyone else not really losing lots of weight?

I do 22 hour fast then have my 500 caps at about 8pm so I'm pretty sure I should be getting the health benefits of fasting if there is some!

akarucker · 03/05/2013 09:28

painting try switching things around a bit. If you're doing 5:2, try 4:3 next week, or the other way round. Really check your TDEE. It's possible that if you're under your TDEE slightly then you need to up it a bit to kick start a loss again. Do you exercise? Try varying that slightly for a week or two.

The idea really would be to sort of shock your body into something slightly different. Perhaps it's just so used to your routine now that it needs a bit of a change, and that change doesn't always mean eating less.

BTW - I'm talking like I know what I'm on about, I don't really, this is just from what I and others have found to work when this happens. Just mix things up a bit!

applegate · 03/05/2013 09:39

well done to all who have lost this week :)
Having had a really indulgent birthday wknd last week I have felt really motivated this week. I have managed to fast whilst doing nightshifts this week and although it has made for a slightly random eating pattern it has been far easier than I expected and has stopped me from spending all night picking at sweet things which I normally do!
Good luck to all fasters today :)

plecofjustice · 03/05/2013 09:44

Did a 4:3 this week combined with eating more (to around TDEE) on feed days - following on from my post a few weeks ago about feeling hungry ALL the time and going to bed hungry on feed days (eating below my BMR, it transpires). Feeling great, had a really healthy week of fruit and veg, and lost 3lb. Going to use 4:3 to mix things up a bit, maybe once a month now.

Bramblesinafield · 03/05/2013 09:47

Morning! Fasting today, usually do on a thurs, but was working and had a load of biscuits etc presented - felt fairly toxic by the end of the day! Looking forwards to a good 'cleansed' feeling - anyone else feel this way?

MeNeedShoes · 03/05/2013 09:57

Morning :) Went a bit mad yesterday but have started sensibly today! Going to keep it light today so I can have my usual half a takeaway this evening.

Really good hearing all your tips, thanks for sharing. I like the idea of a 4:3 once a month, will probably introduce it in a few weeks. It's a bummer that we have visitors on Mon as Mon and Wed are good days for me but I'm going to have Sun lunch, then do a mini 24 hr fast until Mon lunchtime, then do Wed as normal.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 03/05/2013 10:07

Morning! Beautiful day Smile.

NFD day yesterday and I had a lovely day at the spa with friends yesterday. I had porridge first thing before we left and I was STARVING by 10.30. Definitely true about eating first thing, firing up your appetite! Managed to get to 12.30 when we had a beautiful healthy lunch. Later on had two bars of chocolate, biscuit and a bit more chocolate....Shock.

Got home and had 3 slices of crusty bread and butter, so decided not to cook any dinner as I felt quite full anyway. Later on, thought I would have a bath and then come down and have coffee and more chocolate but I just didn't want it....! SO, went to bed-am fasting today, my third of the week.

Bank holiday and mother-in-law visiting next week so am going to find it hard as I know she won't approve of, or understand, fasting....May try and do Monday and Friday (day she leaves).

SAF, I would keep your lunch date, you have done so well, and you'll get there. Agree with others, you shouldn't curtail your social life.

I thought the webchat with Mimi was very good. Enjoyed reading all the Q&As.

Another friend of mine is very interested in this WOE and I've just put the book through her letterbox this morningSmile. Good luck fasters today!

DesperateDietingHousewife · 03/05/2013 10:09

Brambles, love that cleansed feeling! I feel great the morning after a fast. I sometimes just don't want to eat anything and "contaminate" my body with food IYKWIM!! :D

ELR · 03/05/2013 10:09

Morning all, new low today for me 1/4 of a pound lighter than my lowest fleeting weight two weeks ago but it has been a struggle as was bouncing back up by 2lbs hopefully I will maintain this weight now or at least near to it.
Yesterday was my 22nd fast so nearly 11 weeks and I have lost 10lbs. This woe is def slow but the good thing is its manageable and most of all sustainable and has loads of health benefits too! I haven't been this weight in nearly 9 years so that's got to be a good thing and it can only get better!
Good luck all fasters today.

monster54 · 03/05/2013 10:13

Woooohoooo!!!

Weigh in day! I am 11st 3lbs! My new low, takes me to a healthy BMI even with a couple of pounds bounce. I feel like the 10's are well within my grasp now!!! That's 10lbs in 10 weeks on 5:2 and 1 stone overall, I did a couple of weeks slim fast before stumbling on this WOL!!!

I'm over the moon! My target now is 11st by the end of May....I have an outdoor photo session with my family I want to look amazing for!!!

WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!!!!

ELR · 03/05/2013 10:13

I'm 10st3.5 by the way so am hoping to get into the 9's soon my first goal was under 10 for holiday in May half term and then 9st5 by early to mid August.

virginposter · 03/05/2013 10:15

aka seems to me that you do know what you're talking about and are giving good advice Smile
With regards to your own problem of overeating after a good result on the scales, why not try not weighing yourself for a while. If you weigh every day then why not change to weekly, if you weigh weekly then why not change to every other week?
I weigh weekly and always have done but recently I found myself having a sneaky weigh - it's addictive so I stopped quickly before I became hooked.

ELR · 03/05/2013 10:16

Well done monster I have just got to a healthy bmi too which is fab!

ELR · 03/05/2013 10:18

Good advice virgin as the bounces are really disheartening and at the end of the day they are just bounces not real weight gain! On saying that its easier said than done!!

monster54 · 03/05/2013 10:20

Well done ELR I never thought it would mean so much to me but since having a LO I want to look after myself and see her grow!!

I've always been so focused on the numbers but that feels like my biggest achievement so far!!!

Here's to shedding more and more and getting well within the healthy range!!

DesperateDietingHousewife · 03/05/2013 11:02

Well done monster and elr, so pleased for you both.

I have just broken my fast of 14 hours to have a cup of coffee with a bit of milk as was feeling a little light headed and shaky. Hoping to get to 3.30-4 before eating anything. That seems to be the time when I can't keep going without taking in some calories.

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 11:06

Well done momster ELR pleco and all you other "losers"Grin
brambles IKWYM about feeling cleansed. I also feel calm on a fasting day. Just knowing I don't have to think about my food and only have to sort out ds and dh. Whod've thought it?

EagleRiderDirk · 03/05/2013 11:10

Well done everyone!

Today is fast number 5, I've lost 9lb in total. Found myself a little gutted that it was only 1lb less than my last post but had to kick myself into remembering that a 1lb loss since Tuesday is pretty fantastic in itself.

Got my summer clothes out from 2 years ago - preggers last year and oddly I still fit into my maternity wear Wink - and I'm not far off fitting into them again (I was beginning to bust out of them then so I'm happy I'm almost at the same point already). Two weeks ago I'd never have gotten the buttons done up - I can do it now but its nowhere near comfortable enough to wear. I'm looking at them as very achievable targets.

Have a mega weekend planned but have made a few low cal swaps and looks like I can go to town with one of my mum's roasts and still stay below TDEE without being hungry the rest of the time. Mega bonus as I was going to call this weekend a write off!

The only diet that ever worked for me before was GI, but this is far easier and as I'm not really denying myself anything. My mum has also started this WOE and she'd amazed how easy she found coping with fast hunger when she knew the day after she could eat normally.

Good luck all fellow fasters today.

dogsdays · 03/05/2013 11:12

woohoo new low for me today of 9st10lbs (not seen that for about 7 years) mostly a 'lurker' rather than a poster but do check daily on all the regular posts and get huge amount of support &info so thanks] to all. Ive been on a plateau for bout 5 weeks and gained / not lost anything - I love this WOE Grin

dogsdays · 03/05/2013 11:12

meant Thanks to all

OTheHugeManatee · 03/05/2013 11:14

Delurking. Can I join?

headintheclouds · 03/05/2013 11:21

emily i didnt think it was a stupid question..hope you werent offended by my answer.
painting Yes Im not losing huge amounts of weight. Iv e been doing this for 3 months and have lost 10 lbs also and it does seem to come off in fits and starts for me.its hard not to envy others who've lost 10 lbs after 5 weeks .BUT I am today lighter than Ive been in about 7 years and got a pair of trousers on yesterday that Ive not been able to do up for 10 yrs( they are in my wardrobe to use as a guage.. but maybe its time to sling them out after 10 yrs of not wearing them)Grin
dotty i want some scales like yours please... you are well into the 10s now..well done.

ceebeegeebies · 03/05/2013 11:27

Congratulations to everyone on their losses Smile

I don't have any scales at home so haven't weighed myself - I am going to weigh myself at the gym tomorrow and then weigh maybe every other week after that - not keen on weighing myself weekly as I tend to get very disheartened and fall off the wagon if it has not dropped.

Having said that, I have put on a skirt this morning - I bought it just before I started doing this WOE and I could barely do it up and in fact, last time I wore it, I actually used a hairband as I just couldn't quite do the button up...today it does up relatively easily Grin Is that a NSV then??
