The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Aargh, I'm with you aka and saf, I made really good food choices today, and then just went and had half a bottle of wine and two fish cakes with cheese on top!! Blush I haven't counted but I know that'll way take me over TDEE.

wonderingagain · 02/05/2013 22:27

OK so I completely missed Mimi Spencer on the webchat while watching giraffes high diving on youtube.

Breadandwine · 03/05/2013 01:26

Here's the link, wondering.

Well worth a read - lots of familiar names appeared on there, and she seemed to answer every question thoroughly.

Great answer to your Q. re zero cals on fasting day's PostmanP!

swallowedAfly · 03/05/2013 06:36

good webchat - thanks for link.

well this morning i'm alledgedly 11.0.2. so just under 3lbs more than yesterday. i know i said i pigged out yesterday but by pigged out what i mean is that i ate 2 meals and a few home made cookies and drank a glass and a half of wine. i ate it condensed in a short time (hence it feeling like mass pig out) but realistically i doubt that even exceeds my tdee given my activity level yesterday.

i fully expected a bounce but that just seems ridiculous. and it won't be just food in tummy or something. grrr - sorry needed to stamp my feet a bit.

have loose plans to go out for lunch with a friend today and am wondering whether to cancel and fast.

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 06:56

Morning!
Loved the webchat. I thought Mimi was vy good.
Had a complete fast yesterday. Nothing to eat after supper at 6pm on Wednesday to just now.
Enjoyable.
But this morning I was definitely hungry. Thirsty too (TMI alert) dark wee this morning, so I should have drunk more obviously. I had planned to have eggs this morning with toast from the yummy smelling loaf that baked overnight in the bread maker but I caved Blush and have just eaten a couple of strawberries and some low sugar muesli.
Must drink more next time. Next fast on Monday I guess.
Love this WOE. Thanks for this thread.

akarucker · 03/05/2013 07:06

saf exact same gain for me today too. So cross for celebrating my new low with millions of calories. Very silly. Fasting today.

Southeastdweller · 03/05/2013 07:15

Morning folks and congrats on the losses this week Smile

1lb off this 5:2 week for me so 17lbs off in total over 14 weeks. I reached an all-time low last week so am at a new one this week. I couldn't be happier about how satisfying and generally effortless this WOL is.

Did my first 24 hour fast which wasn't as easy as I expected. I got light headed at one point but dived into Sainsbury's for some water and was fine after drinking that. Had a few hunger pangs but managed to ignore them and kept going with water. One of them started after I left Starbucks where I'd been nursing a black coffee and I think it was the smell of the yummy food that did it (don't start me on their fruit bread!). So I'll get my drink to take out next time.

I hope we all enjoy the long weekend. I'm gearing up to do a 36 hour fast from tonight. I should be doing overtime at work tomorrow and then go to the gym so I'll be insanely busy, thankfully.

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 07:24

Well done SAF and southeast

Prawntoast · 03/05/2013 07:24

1lb off this week. Since moving back to Tues and Thurs as fast days 3 weeks ago my weight loss per week, has doubled. Am going to stick with these days now, I can see the 9's beckoning to me. Well done on the losses this week, have a good weekend, hopefully the weather will be good and we will all be noshing salads for three days (with loads of Wine).

akarucker · 03/05/2013 07:31

prawntoast what exactly is it that you did that you think doubled your weight loss? Curious.....

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 07:32

Tupid question alert: if I eat nothing (or

Prawntoast · 03/05/2013 07:39

I think it's having a fast day then a non- fast day followed by a fast day. I was doing Monday and Thursday but because of Easter Monday and not wanting to fast then I shifted to Tuesday. I originally started off on Tuesdays and Thursdays but moved to Monday as I thought that not fasting for 4 days would be bad for results, but looking back on it the weight loss slowed down when I shifted to Mondays. I put this down to a plateau, but I never stoppe losing, just slowed.

MelanieCheeks · 03/05/2013 07:44

That's about 36 hours emily - that's the simple approach I'm taking, though without watching the clock too precisely. There's nothing magical about 36 hours as opposed to 35 or 38, say. And some of the group who've been experimenting with a strict 36 hour fast recently had (I believe) no or very few calories at all in that period ie a much stricter definition of "fast".

But its all about experimenting and seeing what works for your own body, not anyone elses.

headintheclouds · 03/05/2013 07:47

Morningsaf dont cancel your lunch...isnt this WOE supposed to be about having 'normal' eating habits 5 days a week..although I can understand why you are stamping your feet.*
emily yes its a 36+ fast( 37 hoursGrin.
prawn what exactly did you do to double your weight loss,JUST change your fast days.? if thats the case Ill be changing mine to try it out.

Have achieved a new low today but only down 1/2 lb.. so still very slooooow..but a new loss is a new loss as someone said on here yesterday!

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 07:47

OK thanks Melanie

headintheclouds · 03/05/2013 07:50

x posts..thanks emily im definately going to try that this week because of Bank holiday and see if it works for me...

ELR · 03/05/2013 07:52

Yes 36hr zero fast, well 37 actually! Well done.

Emilythornesbff · 03/05/2013 07:54

Yes I do appreciate that was an exceptionally stupid question Blush Grin
I just never really considered the sleeping hours IYSWIM.
We eat early as I cba to do separate sittings for grown ups and DS.

Itsaboatjack · 03/05/2013 08:21

I didn't weigh this morning, couldn't face it. aka I'm fasting with you today as I don't want to fast on bh Monday next week. I've had milk in my tea this morning but then nothing until tonight when I have a Thai curry innocent veg pot which I'll add some prawns to.

Well done southeastdweller, btw I tried the miso soup yesterday, very nice, and surprisingly filling.

akarucker · 03/05/2013 08:24

itsa ha, well fancy that, I've had milk in my tea and will eat nothing until my Thai innocent veg pot tonight, too! (Except I'll be adding a teeny bit of leftover roast chicken). Fun times...

BsshBossh · 03/05/2013 08:36

Well done Emily. I completed my zero calorie 36 hour fast too (and stopped another lb). Now looking forward to a Bank Holiday weekend of good eating.

BsshBossh · 03/05/2013 08:37

Dropped not stopped

swallowedAfly · 03/05/2013 08:47

i've only done one fast this week though - was aiming for yesterday but cracked so it should really be today instead. haven't heard from friend so i'm hoping she's forgotten.

well done for losses and commiserations for bounces. we'll get there!
