The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

On week 3 of 5:2 and definitely losing. I have a LOT of weight to lose Envy of you lot talking about wanting to get down to a 12 from a 14. I'd love to be an 18 one day!

It's strange. It's a little bit of yo yo weight loss - losing lots after fasting and putting a little back on when eating but overall, it seems to be slowly coming off. That's the way i want it. Diets do not work for me at all.

I have no scales btw.

Sad news was I found out on Tuesday my mum died last weekend. It was a shock even though we were not close at all but I still managed to fast on Wed. In fact, i find fasting days easy - nothing to think about as no food! If I struggle, I think of tomorrow.

I am even more determined to live a longer life now more than ever and to lose this weight!

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 17:26

betsy I love you.
Thanks
I am still taking my bf vitamins.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 02/05/2013 17:27

Sorry if my last post sounds quite cold and callous, it's not meant to be. My relationship with my mum is a whole other thread and one best not discussed here. She is one of the reasons I am emotionally attached to food.

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 17:32

Sorry to hear your sadness mrsA

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 17:33

Sorry. Sad news.

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 17:36

And you don't sound callous

headintheclouds · 02/05/2013 18:08
  • dotty yahoooo,so pleased for you.My God youve done well to drop that 4 lbs in 10 days..amazing Flowers Well done to all other new time lows..hopefully Ill be joining you tomorrow
ELR · 02/05/2013 18:09

emily just do what you feel is best for you and your baby, if you are both happy then there is no reason to stop. I bet loads of new mums forget or are too busy to eat half the time anyway!

Kittykat28 · 02/05/2013 18:12

Started the 5:2 on Monday and then fasted again yesterday, going to do Monday and Thursday next week (had a birthday lunch today). I know I shouldn't weigh myself everyday but did, and have lost 4lbs so far with only two fasting days. Going to try and keep my calories under control on my non fast days and hope that it's not a fluke!

akarucker · 02/05/2013 18:24

Urgh, why, why, why do I do this?? It's the second time in a row that I've reached a low, and what do I do...I spend the day stuffing my face! I seriously do not know why I sabotage myself when things go well on the scales. I'm sure there's some deep routed reason that a £200 an hour psychiatrist could figure out, but until that happens... must.not.do.it.again.

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 18:32

Hope so too headintheclouds. After not eating till 3pm I then had a couple of falafel and hummus followed by leftover shepherds pie. Probably too big a portion of it judging by how stuffed I feel now!
WAs going to have a small slice of choc cake after but just couldn't face it. Got a meeting to go to tonight so may have it when I get in later. Or maybe tomorrow Smile
aka we've all been there. Ditch the guilt and start tomorrow afresh!

monster54 · 02/05/2013 18:41

Ok ladies 23 hours and I'm about to break my fast with a chicken breast and some veggies.

Don't worry mrsa I understand where your coming from...I've not spoken to my mother in years and she's never met my DC.....

Some relationships are just toxic and left alone!!

Sorry to hear your news all the same, must of been a shock.

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 19:07

aka I do the same - I think it might be because I'm actually quite hungry though! It is annoying at times though but hey another fast will sort it out :)

MrsA Sorry to hear that Flowers

Emily Smile - just think how you won't be joining the ranks of those (like me) who put on loads of weight when they stop BF! Wish I'd known about this WOE back then - was quite slim after DC2, until I stopped BF.

Did you hear what you said Dotty? Was going to have a slice of cake but didn't (paraphrasing) - [impressed face]

Kitty well done! Great start.

monster 23 hours is ace, well done! I'm hoping to try for a longer one tomorrow (long for me anyway - might manage 22 hours)

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 19:10

Has everyone seen there's a webchat with Mimi Spencer tonight? She's the co-author of the Fast Diet book with Michael Mosley.

Post your questions if you have any for her here

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 19:39

aka i've ended up doing exactly the same thing. i feel stuffed and horrible with it too. ho hum.

BsshBossh · 02/05/2013 19:45

aka I do it too, whenever I lose on a weigh in day (Fridays) I celebrate with food. I embrace it now - I will always love food and will always celebrate everything with it, so recognising this I just resolve to eat less on another day (even if it's a NFD). My pattern tends to be:

Friday - weigh in, celebrate by going over TDEE
Saturday - it's the weekend so celebrate by going well over TDEE
Sunday - as Saturday
Monday - atone for all indulgences and under TDEE (NFD)
Tuesday - FD - 500 cals
Wedesday - eat normally
Thursday - FD - 0 cals

It's been working for me (have reached goal weight).

DeckSwabber · 02/05/2013 20:03

Gave blood today and only passed the hb test by a whisker. Feel fine but wondering if fasting has affected my iron levels? I've only done three fasts so I'm thinking not, but will keep an eye on my iron consumption.

Fasting again tomorrow!

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 20:03

bssh i don't think i'm ever going to be able to stop either so one fast a week at least is going to need to be a total fast. i like over eating sometimes. i don't think i'm actually able/willing to give that up. i'll just have to make up for it.

there was nothing sweet in the house earlier so i actually made cookies. they were yum and i had several. have put the rest in a lidded tub now as a nice surprise for ds when he comes home tomorrow. at least i'd stopped eating by 7pm and am confident i won't eat anymore so i'll get a good long digestion time.

akarucker · 02/05/2013 20:11

bssh I really like your pattern. I'm thinking that could work for me too. Life has sort of dictated that I'm doing 4:3 instead of ADF at the moment, but I think incorporating your sort of pattern may help. I'm dreadful at recording TDEE. It makes me feel like I'm dieting and I hate that! But, I'm certainly aware of what is over indulging. Thanks for the tip.

monster54 · 02/05/2013 20:13

BB thanks...it is getting easier each week. I really hope for a loss in the morning!

I've been really good and its my first time doing 4:3 as a booster!!!!

BsshBossh · 02/05/2013 20:14

saf agreed. For me, personally, it's not about binging or emotional eating. I come from a foodcentric culture - India. We mark everything with food. I became overweight because I didn't balance out the eating. Now I know that if I eat alot one day, I simply have to eat less another day (preferably a weekday cause that's when I socialise the least). It's a simple lesson that I hope now I've learned.

BsshBossh · 02/05/2013 20:16

aka my pleasure. I love food and don't want to "demonise" it or demonise myself for eating (lots of) it. So balance over the course of the week is my only way forward.

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 20:21

Well, this is my first fast of zero food. I had a marmite drink and a low cal hot choc but otherwise all zero cal drinks.
Feel good. Although supper was challenging as I made a delicious looking chicken pie from scratch for DS Smile
It's so liberating to not have to eat. Is that weird?

BsshBossh · 02/05/2013 20:27

Emily I get so much more done when I do zero calorie fasts, when I don't have to think about fixing myself food (I do it on a day when DH doesn't eat at home, and my 4 yo eats at 5pm anyway so I've never eaten with her at that time).

wonderingagain · 02/05/2013 21:16

Wow MrsA.

Sorry for your loss - even though you had issues with your mother grief is often about dealing with the aftermath, the way family shifts position, the way relationships alter as conversations are had and memories brought back up.

Brilliant that you continued to fast despite this. I've got 3 stone to lose, I understand what being a size 20 feels like too. I also have lost half my family in the last few years so understand grief. Feel free to share. Smile
