The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I did my second 36 hour fast yesterday, another 1 lb down! Loving this really, not much more difficult than 500 cals a day and better results!

Did enjoy my buttered crumpets this morning though.

Good luck to all fasters today and to quote Scarlett O'Hara "Tomorrow is another day"

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 09:45

Congrats Eliza. I've not really considered doing a 36hr fast but think it's a good thing to try if you're hitting a plateau. Well done on your loss.

Belo · 02/05/2013 10:05

I'm attempting day 2 today. So far only 15 cals according to MFP. I needed a cup of tea in the morning. I'm encouraged by all the new low reports. Congrats. I'm in awe of all the people who are doing zero calorie days. I don't think I could do it. I'm trying to hold off until 11am until I have breakfast - Toast and scrambled egg white. Not eating it right now is proving an enormous struggle for me.

Unsure what to do about my normal lunchtime exercise... Spinning? At least I'll have a bike to hold onto if I have a dizzy spell! Or, go easy on myself and do Pilates...

monster54 · 02/05/2013 10:11

Yey yey yey dotty you are my inspiration!!!!

I've been bouncing around 11st 5.5lbs. I'm hoping for a new low tomorrow after a 3rd fast day today!!

Im hoping to see 11st 4lbs and then the 10's will feel in my grasp!!!

I am due a plateau though so I won't beat myself up too much if it doesn't happen!!

Itsaboatjack · 02/05/2013 10:11

Woohoo. Just checked the old BMI calculator and I am now officially a 'healthy weight'. 24.8 so only just, and it's post fast so I won't be getting the flags out just yet but it's a good feeling.

I've just been for a run and was having fun enjoying my shadow, I was in lycra, and with the sun behind me and still quite low so it was stretching my shadow and making me look lovely and slim Grin
Then came home and broke my fast with a banana and handful of strawberries.

Well done Dotty and Eliza

Hope everyone else has some of this lovely sunshine that we are enjoying down south today.

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 10:19

Itsa That is very exciting Grin, well done. I love those long morning shadows too! I'm hoping to get back to my running regime next week, it is so glorious on these sunny mornings.

Apparently I'm not fasting today - a bagel caught my eye that definitely required toasting then butter, marmalade and a bit of cheddar (I know, sounds gross right? Wrong, it is DELICIOUS!). Fast tomorrow.

peplum41 · 02/05/2013 10:46

morning allSmile

I decided not to have tea last night, so the post walk munchies of cheese on rice cakes and some not that nice but it will do chocolate from Lidl did actually keep me full until bedtime. I was shattered, so went to bed on an empty stomach and slept soundly all night. eatmum and other new fasters note, at first I hated going to bed hungry and barely slept. I would lie awake for hours feeling empty, that particular side effect seems to have subsided, about 6 weeks in. Many times I went over the 500 cals with a slice of ryvita or 2, but don't need to now. Infact all of the negative side effects seem to have disappeared.

So, got a good early headstart to my fast, hoping to actually make it to 24 hours today, usually get to about 21/23, but that's because Ive eaten late the previous day. Well done to the new fasters who've managed that straight away, it took several fasts for me to build up to not eating until teatime.
I don't think Im ready to go without my 500 cal tea yet!

tomorrowweeat why the Sad emoticon?

wonderingagain, Thanks for that link, have put that site in my favourites file, will have a good nosie at it later. I do like how it gives a breakdown of some of the biological benefits of fasting without the reader needing to have a phd in bio/chemical terminology. Very inspiring when your several hours into a fast, that if you just keep going you're doing yourself so much good.

akarucker, dotty, saf Yay on the new scales victories. Currently stuck in bouncy castle land but happy to plod on none the less.

itsaboatjack have you recovered from chicken pox already?

elderberries, like your new name, a healthier choice to a baileys based cocktail.

peplum41 · 02/05/2013 10:55

betsybell, no that bagel sounds good. You must make sure no bagels are in the house for tomorrow. Ugh, you've set off a hunger pang damn you.

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 10:57

Well done itsaboat and monster thank you Blush. This thread is such a fantastic source of support, I really couldn't have done it without either the wise old timers, the new and enthusiastic posters or the ones who've been doing it a similar time to me, with similar stories.

Itsaboatjack · 02/05/2013 11:04

peplum turns out it wasn't chicken pox and I'm just a big drama queen Grin, just some other random viral rash, but I didn't get too many many spots and they didn't pus then crust like pox do. But thanks for asking x

BVB that bagel clearly should have had marmite and cheese not marmalade. Either that or black currant jam and Brie. Mmm making myself hungry now.

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 11:23

[puts remaining bagels in the freezer] peplum

Also, apologies, must stop posting about delicious foods.

Glad you haven't got Chicken Pox itsa. I only like marmite on fresh crusty bread with lashings of butter, hang on I said stop posting about food

I think I must have missed some posts, I like the sound of wonderingagain's link...

monster54 · 02/05/2013 11:42

I know what you mean dotty...even my DH said the other day how proud he is I've stuck with this so long.

But I very much feel that this is my WOL now and I do enjoy majority of fasts....except maybe today! Ha ha STRUGGLING.COM!!!!

postmanpatscat · 02/05/2013 12:43

Hello everyone

Well done to those with new lows...and dotty I told you it was waiting just around the corner!

I hit a new low after Monday's zero fast, bounced up 500g yesterday, fasted with 500 cals yesterday and was back to my new low this morning. Had a good look at myself this morning and decided not to obsess with the numbers too much but think about whether I will actually look better if I lose any more, so settled on 8st 10lbs as my new target (currently 8st 11.5).

I also measured myself this morning as it's 10 weeks since I started 5:2, now 29.5cm lost in total from chest/waist/hips/upper arm/thigh measurements (can I be cheeky and double the arm and leg ones?!) including 8cm each from waist and hips.

Now off to daydream about bagels...almost had one for breakfast on Tuesday but it was green on the bottom, which I only spotted when it popped out of the toaster!

monster hope today's fast gets easier for you. You know you can do it.

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 12:57

yay for the 10's dotty Smile well done - awful when you're stuck bouncing for ages like that. hope you do better than me and stay there.

fast day and early finish from work so long stretch ahead without distraction. i'm actually child free tonight as well. tempted to find a way to knock myself out and sleep till tomorrow morning Grin could use the rest and at least i wouldn't eat.

akarucker · 02/05/2013 13:10

bvb ah yes, the chocolate!! The craving has not gone! I don't think a week was long enough to curb that. However, I think it has left me realizing that I can go without chocolate, without dying!! So, although I think about it day and night, I've found that since I did my week without, my will power has been given a bit of a boost. speaking of Boost, I may have had one with my lunch today...

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 13:16

29cam postman? That's amazing!!! I've not remeasured my tummy since starting. As an apple shape it's quite hard to work out exactly where to measure but I know from clothes that it's shrunk significantly Smile
Thanks saf, hope you stay safely under the 11 mark too! It's gorgeous outside, go do some gardening / find a sunny spot and read a book / go for a lovely walk?

MelanieCheeks · 02/05/2013 13:49

Mmm I'd forgotten how much I like Bovril!

ELR · 02/05/2013 13:50

Well done dotty ibet you are so pleased, it makes it ll worth while. I'm taking inspiration from you and not going to get disheartened ive been the same weight for 4 weeks now!
itsa glad you are back and recovered from mystery virus.
betsy I slice and freeze all manor of tasty bread items! The bagel sounded good my fave weird breakfast is bacon and banana on toast.

Just done my second Pilates class and found it better than last week so will stick with it. Just broken my fast 17 hours with two boiled eggs and salad, I'm feeling really full but my tummy is still grumbling!

Good luck everyone else who's fasting today!

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 16:11

i've quit for today. suddenly felt really hungry and the day ahead seemed long. i think i probably didn't eat enough yesterday (after a long fast) to fast again so soon. or i'm making excuses Wink

either way today is now a nfd.

MelanieCheeks · 02/05/2013 16:32

Where are you saf? I've just told myself I'm in the home straits now! Have survived on Bovril, herbal tea and coffee until 4 pm, just had a satsuma to give me an energy boost before the gym, and am looking forward to relaxing with a can of diet ginger beer later on.

I usually hate fizzy drinks, strange how I crave them on fast days. And coffee, I only drink it on fast days as well.

Miffytastic · 02/05/2013 16:33

Dotty that's great news!

I weighed in this morning after yesterday's fast and was 1.5lbs UP from last Thursday morning :-( Bah! It seems the 9s are still evadin me. Mind you I did something I thought I couldn't do yesterday - did the most bonkers zumba class at 7pm on a fast day. 3 months ago I wouldnt believe it was possible.

I don't know what to do to push off this plateau... exercise more I guess, I can't really face 4:3 or zero fasts. Maybe more mini-fasts might be a way to curb calories. Confused

BTW I tried on that dress and it's ok with special control knickers on, so I reckon I'll keep it.

MeNeedShoes · 02/05/2013 16:39

well done itsa and pat

Strange day here. Eating too much but it was always going to be a weird one.

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 16:52

Miffy good news about the dress! It can only look better by the time the event comes around Smile

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 16:52
Sad I've just read the January web chat with Dr M. In response to someone asking about calorie increases for breastfeeding mothers he said that he was conservative and didn't recommend fasting if you're breastfeeding. I am ebf. I ^really^ enjoy fasting. Baby seems happy and my milk volume doesn't seem to be affected. Off to sulk now. I was on a fast day.
BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 17:07

emily He can't condone it because there isn't any proper research on it (presumably) but we've had lots of BFeeders on here doing this totally successfully - including you! Don't be disheartened:

Baby seems happy and my milk volume doesn't seem to be affected

You said it yourself... and you really enjoy it so why be concerned? x
