The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Whoop di whoop! (Or something like that!) new low this morning for a total of 15lbs lost! The bounce is inevitable, but a new low is a new low!!!

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 06:54

Fasting today. Anyone else?
Thought I'd try to avoid solids completely.

Also, re:Mimi's webchat; I wonder if it's appropriate to ask her about fasting while ebf.
I think I'll cry if I'm told I shouldn't be fasting.

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 06:58

Hi tortoise I'm fasting today too. I don't like miso. But I'll be having lots of herb tea, a coffee, fizzy water, and marmite drinks.
If I have to eat it'll be leaves or lentil broth. The tea really helps and I have emergency diet chocolate drink just on standby.

Emilythornesbff · 02/05/2013 06:59

akarucker that's fantastic

Southeastdweller · 02/05/2013 07:04

Hi tortoise I recommend you getting some eggs today.

headintheclouds · 02/05/2013 07:15

headintheclouds · 02/05/2013 07:18

aka fantastic... hoping for a new low myself tomorrow! well done..it works doesnt itSmile

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 07:23

morning Smile

i actually ate quite a bit last night in the end so tuesday was fast day 1 and wednesday a non fast day. have to decide whether to fast today now or try and do tomorrow but got a feeling i said i'd go for lunch on friday with a friend so will try for today.

scales today say 10.11.4 which is my low from a few weeks back that i briefly glimpsed. not realistically expecting to stay there but hoping not to bounce right back up into the 11's again. it does seem like the total fasts are the way forward for me.

akarucker · 02/05/2013 07:27

saf yay - a new low buddy today!Smile

swallowedAfly · 02/05/2013 07:30

congrats to you aka Smile i've been here before though - would like to stay this time!

Barbie1 · 02/05/2013 07:36

Hello all Smile

15 hours into my 3rd fast and sticking to zero cals.

Stop on scales yesterday and found I have lost 1.8lb by doing the two fasts. Very encouraged by this. I have been stuck at 9.2 for months before now, so hopefully I can push and get below the 9stone mark.

I'm on my phone so can't really reply to last posters without losing the post and getting all confuzzled.

Congratulations on the new all time lows

Congratulations for the new grand daughter. New born cuddles, lovely Smile

Hope everyone had a good fast today.

fatsatsuma · 02/05/2013 07:51

Thanks wonderingagain that article looks interesting. I'm down to a new low this morning so maybe you're right about feeling cold = burning fat. And can someone explain how I can lose 2lbs literally overnight??? Not that I'm complaining...Smile

DorisShutt · 02/05/2013 07:52

First normal eating day after my first fast day. I've had some fruit juice, and I can feel that I'm hungry; but I'm not as ravenous as I thought I would be.

Can I ask about "normal" eating days? If I was dieting normally, I would be using MFP's calorie guide - so about 1500 calories daily. I checked on the link in the OP and (roughly guessing as my scales need a new battery Blush) it says I should eat 1860 calories. Does it matter I I eat less? Will it stall/reduce the effectiveness? Or should I force myself to eat handfuls of malteasers to compensate? Grin

Itsaboatjack · 02/05/2013 07:52

Well done aka and saf. I've hit a new low today too 11st 4.2. Now I just have to focus on my NFDs so it doesn't bounce up too much.

Itsaboatjack · 02/05/2013 07:56

Doris, listen to your body more than mfp. Having said that though you don't want to go too much below your TDEE, if you do need to up your calories do it with things like nuts or avocado.

Well done fatsuma I was also extremely cold yesterday so maybe it does mean something?

Salbertina · 02/05/2013 08:02

Ok bar dinner out am fasting today.

ceebeegeebies · 02/05/2013 08:08

morning Smile

congratulations to those that have reached a new low. great motivation for me to carry on!!

Second fast this week and have taken your advice and am cutting out carbs today so lunch will be 2 hard boiled eggs and a very small portion of cheese mixed with light mayo and tea is going to be a carton of tomato soup
Does that sound ok?

BsshBossh · 02/05/2013 08:20

Morning all. I'm fasting today too - aiming for no food at all until tomorrow morning. This will be my 3rd zero calorie 36 hour fast, and my 28th fast since I started. Good luck any fasters today!

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 08:24

Wooh, HALLELUJAH, I'm finally in the 10s!!!! 10st 13 this morning, though it fleetingly teased me with 10st12 before settling.
I have been "stuck" at between 11st-11st 3lbs for about four weeks now but I felt last week as though more weight was going but didn't dare hope.
Another mini fast today ie. nothing till teatime but then a normal tea - no calories counted.
Well done to itsaboat and saf and have my fingers crossed for you too headintheclouds. You're all my 5:2 buddies and it's reading and posting on here day after day that keeps my going when I'm feeling as though I'm getting nowhere.
Last time I was in the 10s was about seven years ago when doing weightwatchers post DD's arrival so this really means a lot to me.

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 08:36

Aka Flowers - can I ask how you're doing with the chocolate now? Have you managed to curb it a bit after that week off?

Anyone having trouble sleeping after a fast - I was like that for the first few weeks but it's all settled down now and sleep normally after a fast and never wake up feeling hungry anymore.

Well done Barbie sounds like you're doing really well.

There is some positive stuff about feeling cold - I can't quite remember what it is but according to the tips and links thread B&W is looking for some hard science to back it up!

CeeBee Sounds good but why not add in a big pile of salady things or veg to your day - very few calories for a lovely big plate full of food - better than cheese Smile (have a look at what does 200 calories look like if you need convincing!)

Tortoise Meal soup tubs, Glorious soups and Innocent meal pots are good - calorie counted and satisfying, if you're going to Sainsbury's I'm particularly keen on their Chickan Arrabbiata meal soup! Packs of ham are great - 16 calories per slice - lovely in a leafy salad with sliced boiled egg and a yogurt and lemon juice dressing. Carrots a good snack and an apple is nice if you crave something sweet.

Dorris If you feel like you need to boost up calories then do it with a few unsalted nuts - highly nutritious as well as calorific BUT don't be a slave to MFP - count your calories over a week if you must so you've got spare at the weekend or for a meal out or whatever.

Hello to everyone else new :)

I might be fasting today - haven't decided yet, I should do - weight is creeping up again as I haven't been exercising much recently. If not today, then definitely tomorrow.

Whitecat · 02/05/2013 09:18

Woohoo Dotty you are my inspiration. I'm waiting to properly break the 11 stone barrier. Your post gives me hope.
Well done everyone for sticking to it.
I had a TOM glitch at the beginning of the week but successful fast yesterday so back on track.

BetsyBell · 02/05/2013 09:18

Fab news Dotty Flowers

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 09:25

Aw, thanks whitecat. I started this WOE at 11st 8, my heaviest to date and was feeling thoroughly rubbish about myself. I dropped 4lbs in as many weeks and then bounced around 11st - 11st 4 for what felt like forever.
Had a blow out birthday weekend and was back up to 11st 4 ten days ago. Took a deep breath and went straight back to 5:2, shifted the birthday excess by Saturday and then dropped under the 11 in the last couple of days.
Sooo relieved.
Keep the faith, chuck in a 4:3 week to kick start things maybe? I've done that on occasion just to mix it up a bit.

Dotty342kids · 02/05/2013 09:25

Thanks Betsy

MeNeedShoes · 02/05/2013 09:25

Congrats to all the low weigh-ins this morning :) And great link re science stuff so thanks!

I ended up having a piece of toast at bedtime again as my stomach suddenly got a bit sore, like achy. Also found I lay in bed for a while feeling far too alert - rather like I had all day! Did get to sleep eventually. Not hitting the 36 hours yet but not in any hurry as a lot of you seem to have built up to it.

So NFD today and not sure what to eat. Might hold fire till lunchtime or at least late morning. It's so liberating not feeling like a slave to breakfast. I've always hated eating when I first get up but used to try and make myself eat as I felt like I should. The trouble was I could only stomach real junky, hot food in the morning e.g sausage rolls, hot dogs etc from canteen in work. Now I know it won't actually have an impact on weight loss I'll just skip it :)

So now I have 4 days on the NFD train. Hope I don't go mad altogether.
