The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Following a day of thoroughly enjoying food (and drink) I have lost 5lb in a week. So 13.12 down to 13.7 this morning. At one point I had lost 10lb (after a fast day) but this is a more realistic weight.

It's good to get a realistic view of how long it will take me to reach my goal (10.7) at this rate it will be 14 weeks if I can do 3lb a week. Is that realistic?

Just worked out it will be 5th August - the day we go on holiday (non-beach). Smile

wonderingagain · 01/05/2013 07:35

I should add I'm doing ADF - I find it easier to manage routine wise.

BsshBossh · 01/05/2013 07:54

I'm like virginposter regarding differentiating between head hunger and genuine hunger. When I'm genuinely hungry, I crave a proper, nutritious meal; head hunger sees me craving junk. I too try and follow Breadandwine's 20 minute rule. And always glug down water first.

However, it doesn't always work for me - my head certainly wins alot of the time. That is why I'm interesting in re-reading that Gillian Riley Eating Less book someone mentioned earlier, and investigating the literature around Mindful Eating. Though I've reached goal weight, I still haven't entirely got a grip over my tendency to eat for the sake of it (might revisit Paul McKenna too).

SaltyandSweet · 01/05/2013 07:59

Morning all! Today is a NFD after two consecutive fast days. I fasted Monday and Tuesday and will fast again Thursday. I might be delusional but I think that consecutive days prod my weight back on a downward trend after it's been stuck for awhile. I eat 422 calories on a fast day (no experimentation for me, same stuff every fast day!). Today being an eat day, I have only had coffee so far (with lots of milk!) and waiting for the hunger monster to rear its head Grin

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 01/05/2013 08:06

Hi all. DH and I started this yesterday (and texted each other all day about food...) so I'm hopping in here to join in, please. I'll look at all those lovely links upthread in a minute - all I know so far is the absolute basic principle (2 days, non-consecutive, 500 cals) so looking forward to all the wisdom you guys have to offer.

I have to say that between my exercise days (I fence once a week and I'm trying to do C25K), traditional "treat" days like Saturdays when I don't want to be fasting, and DH's commitments, it's going to be a bit of trial and error to work out which days work best for fasting. Do you all have set days, or move it around week by week as to which suits? DH and I will find it easier if we do it together, we think, but trying to coordinate. Ooof.

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 01/05/2013 08:09

Oh, I should say I'm only looking to lose a stone, but also I've just weaned my youngest and that, traditionally, has been when my weight soars...so it feels more like heading off the next stone's gain than anything else.

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 08:11

Well done wonderingagain
Very impressive saltyandsweet

Well today my weight is at 9st7lb 8oz. At the start, 3 weeks ago I was 10st 3lb 5oz. S that's just under 10 lb of the scales are right. Want to get to 8st 4lb so 1st 4 lb ish to go.

swallowedAfly · 01/05/2013 08:21

good plan tortoise - hopefully you will also lose the stone you want to but even just countering the post breastfeeding surge will be good. probably a really good time to focus on your eating and appetite anyway as you adjust down to what your body needs rather than what you need to produce milk. i stuffed myself silly when breastfeeding - used to have a bar of galaxy by my bed ready for night feeds Grin

welcome btw.

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 01/05/2013 08:28

Thanks SAF. Yeah, losing is hopefully the goal. Last time I went a stone under pre-preg weight in the first six months PP, then put two stone on the next year. Terrified it'll happen again, I'm already 6lb up from my maximum happy weight, so trying to take proper control now.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 01/05/2013 08:29

Hey wonderingagain
You are very unlikely to maintain 3lb a week loss. It will most likely drop to 1-2lb. 3lb isn't really healthy in the longer term anyway.

IsaacCox · 01/05/2013 08:32

Hi all, hope it's ok if I join :)

Today is my first fast day. I've been awake since 4 thinking of food Hmm

I've weighed myself , been for a 1.5 mile power walk, done some tidying and like someone said up thread, just waiting for the hunger monster to rear it's head Grin I've had 2 pints of water so far so should be ok for a bit.

I'm going to go and finish painting some furniture I've been putting off, it'll keep me busy and away from food!

SaltyandSweet · 01/05/2013 08:44

Thanks Emily, let's hope my belief in occasional consecutive days shifting the weight isn't me being delusional! Weigh in next week - I try not to weigh too often, especially after fasting where of course there'll be a drop, as I find seeing too many bounces sticks in my head and brings me down. Last weighed in at 11.9, which is fine, must remind myself that I started this in mid Feb at 13.2 and I want to be 9.9 so a ways to go. My challenge is to not mindlessly snack on eat days - usually when the kids are eating or snacking. This WOE has helped me think about what I eat but I do still occasionally mindlessly eat. Next goal is to stop that!!

Doilooklikeatourist · 01/05/2013 08:45

Second fast day here ( fasted Monday , ate Tuesday ) on my second black coffee , and hoping not to feel hungry til much later .

Only problem is that I work in a cafe , surrounded by lovely bread and cakes and I know we're going to be very busy today .

Hoping to drink lots of water , and will try green tea for the first time , oh the excitement !

plecofjustice · 01/05/2013 09:36

Should add about the exercise, normally I'm fine either gymming, swimming or doing a Shred on a fast day, yesterday I was doing a consecutive day fst, which is why I had some bad effects (and hayfever's making my asthma flare, so I couldn't catch my breath Sad)

Consecutive fast seems to have broken the hump, 2lb down on last week. Fasting again tomorrow and will see if that pushes me out of the bounce zone (thanks for the imagery SAF!)

ElizaCBennett · 01/05/2013 09:58

Morning, just have to share - I became a grandmother yesterday! A little girl, I am so excited, can't wait to see her.

MeNeedShoes · 01/05/2013 10:07

Congrats Eliza! :) Thanks

Tourist I'll be your fast buddy today :) Initially aiming to get to 7pm on 500 cals, then will see about pushing it from there.

Tortoise thanks for sharing about the post BFing gain. I've been really complacent because the weight has gradually come off and I'm about 1.5stone lighter than pre-preg. I need to start reducing my BFing to morning and night feeds only, which I'd like to do for a while, and it suddenly hit home that I couldn't keep eating all sorts of crap and still lose weight. Good luck :)

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 01/05/2013 10:10

Congratulations Eliza! Thanks

akarucker · 01/05/2013 10:20

Feeling inspired, virtuous, & enthusiastic today! Was chatting to an acquaintance today who was telling me about a diet she's on, and how she's been on it for two months but is really missing pasta, bread, potatoes, alcohol...all the stuff she loves. Just reminded me, that although I'm fasting today, if I fancied a dinner of pasta, bread, potatoes & wine tomorrow....I could!! My weight loss may be slow, but given my greed and absolute love affair with food, I am just loving that I don't have to give up ANYTHING!! Turns out she has lost the same amount of weight as me in the same amount of time, except she's deprived herself and I haven't! I mentioned this woe to her...she was interested, and I think she'll come back for more.

On an unrelated note, I'm cooking a roast chicken tonight for the family. Are the calories in a roast chicken breast, without the skin, the same as if I were to grill a skinless chicken breast? I suppose I mean does the delicious basting with fat during cooking 'seep' into the meat to up the cals?

MeNeedShoes · 01/05/2013 10:43

Rucker am drooling at your chicken :o Yeah I think unfortunately the fat basting does add to the cals (and the yumness!). Interesting about your friend too, I really can't face doing any kind of restrictive diet as I know I can shift 2 stone with ease, then will just abandon it. It's too hard to maintain.

Belo · 01/05/2013 11:09

Hello. I've been lurking and trying to read all of the back posts. Blimey. There are a lot of them! It's been very motivating to read about all of the weight loss. I hope I'll be up here posting about mine soon! I would like to loose 7.5lbs. Not an awful lot, but proving impossible to budge by any other method.

I did my 1st fast day on Monday and found it hard. But, I did it. I'm going to try another one tomorrow. But, my favourite spinning class is on a Thursday. Would I be mad to attempt it? If I do, am I allowed any extra calories in the afternoon Grin? I found on Monday that I had real difficulties concentrating at work in the afternoon. I'm wondering if spinning will only make me hungrier and make work harder.

Itsaboatjack · 01/05/2013 11:45

Welcome Belo, no you don't get to eat the calories burned from exercise I'm afraid. Whether or not you'll be up to it seems to vary from person to person. Many of us on here do do exercise on fast days with no ill affects, others seems to struggle. I didn't try exercising on fast days straight away but waited a few weeks until I'd got to grips with that first.

It's up to you really, if you feel ok then go but be prepared to not do it as hard as you normally might. And remember lots of water.

BsshBossh · 01/05/2013 11:45

akarucker I add the calorie equivalent of a tablespoon of oil when I log roast chicken breast sans skin.

ElizaCBennett huge congratulations Flowers, how exciting!

Miffytastic · 01/05/2013 11:45

Fluffy me too, though sometimes it's worse than others, I've been fasting for 3 months now and I do still have my 'yonderly' moments I'm afraid.
In fact, it's something I'm looking forward to seeing the back of to be honest....if I can eventually get down to where I want to be and switch to 6:1 then that's only one day a week of POSSIBLY feeling odd at times as I wouldn't say it happens every single fast day

Dotty342kids · 01/05/2013 11:52

I am feeling slim today! Wore a little vest top to zumba, instead of usual slightly baggier top and even my instructor commented!
Scales still not budging below 11st but am def feeling good so continuing with this week's plan of fasting Monday, nfd Tuesday, fasting today, mine fast tomorrow (no cals till dinner time but then a dinner that's prob over 500cals), then a nfd on Friday. Might chuck in another fast day on Sat as the bank holiday weekend will mean I can't do a Monday fast as I would normally.
Good to shake things around now and then I reckon!

postmanpatscat · 01/05/2013 12:13

That's great dotty !

Congrats Eliza

Really hard getting dressed for work this morning - put on a Monsoon dress DP bought me for xmas that I've only worn once and it looked like a sack! Shapeless and unflattering without so much of me to fill it Sad I wonder if he'll be deeply offended if I put it on Ebay...

Second fast of the week for me, and I have been given a scone baked by one of the kids I tutor! Best eaten the same day so I bet DD will take it off my hands if I take it home with me.
