The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

DesperateDietingHousewife · 01/05/2013 13:36

Wow-so many posts on here this morning, has taken me ages to read them all! I met some friends for coffee this morning and only had a filter coffee with a bit of milk instead of my usual latte. One of my friends has said that she has ordered the book. They always ask me every week how I'm doing, I'm sure there may be a few others ordering it soonWink.

Welcome Tortoise, IsaacCox and Belo-many apologies if I have missed anyone out!

fluffy, I get a bit spaced out too in the afternoon but it goes along with feeling a little shaky and dizzy-it's not major but I can't wait until it goes. I hate feeling like that.

Endofmyfeather congrats on your weight loss, that's brilliant and very inspiring! I know what you mean about finding it hard at mealtimes. I use them as markers for the day. About 1ish, I think of it as another milestone reached in the fasting day and tell myself "Breakfast and lunch times out of the way, I only have to wait until 4pm when I can have a snack, then dinner at 6pm and the day is nearly over".

emilythornesbff I started at 10st 3 too, the same weight as you but after a good start of a 5lb loss, am jumping around a bit and this morning was 10st 1. Am amazed by your loss of 10lbs. Are you doing 5:2 or 4:3 and are you staying within your TDEE on NFDs? I have been eating a lot of sugar on NFDs, maybe this is why I'm not losing so much? I'm on my 7th fast today (am doing 4:3 this week to try and get a bit lower) and just entering my third week.

doilook ooooh, hard working with cakes when you are fasting! Why don't you choose something that you can have tomorrow to keep you going-chances are, when tomorrow comes, you won't even want it!

Eliza congrats on your baby granddaughter! How exciting for youGrin X

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 14:14

Hi desperatedietinghousewife I have a 3 mo dd so I think some of the weight loss has come about through not bingeing Blush
I don't calorie count on NFDs. Good to have a start weight buddy Grin

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 14:15

Congratulations eliza

mummytime · 01/05/2013 14:16

Well I had to eat my apple this morning, so only 14 hours fast over night (but my eldest was being a pain). However since then I did my voluntary work, came out and went to Tescos to buy: 1 bottle of water. Then went to the park to do my first week of week 2 of Zombie 5K!
Actually completed the whole thing, felt fine. I did walk the final free run/walk cool down, but most of that was up hill and it was starting to get hot.
Haven't eaten anything since my apple. I feel fine, so I'll see if I last until my evening meal.

BTW I have a lot to lose, I'm just setting myself lots of intermediate goals. I achieved the first was to see the weight in stones go down one, now its to have lost 1 stone (then it will probably be to get to the next number of stones down).

It is easier say if you see a chocolate cake, or a glass of wine, to be able to think; okay I can have that tomorrow.

monster54 · 01/05/2013 14:17

I'm on a NFD...

I know a lot of people struggle with these days. But today I just feel so full, I don't know if its the weather or what but my appetite is massively reduced now to what it once was...

I was so focused on food and when I'm going to eat and what I was going to eat I've almost don't care now. I'm finding my choices are changing...I picked a salad today with quorn snacks....

I still have treats at the weekend, but I find they are still upsetting my tummy so much! I'm worried about not eating my TDEE and stalling my loss?!

MeNeedShoes · 01/05/2013 14:46

Dotty great point about the Bank Holiday - had totally forgotten. Will have to rethink fast days - or might do a lunchtime to lunchtime fast from Sun to Mon.

Two coffees with milk so far and only the odd tummy rumble. Will hold fire for a while. Not as spacy today either which is good. And managed to get a bit of work done this morning, hurray! The whole head hunger rather than tummy hunger distinction is really interesting. I had my coffees in a nice cafe this morning and usually I would be ogling the buns and sandwiches but didn't feel tempted at all. It's early days but if I can make this system flexible enough I can see how it suits people :)

Sunshine78 · 01/05/2013 14:47

Have had a pot of fresh coffee got lunch and not planning on eating till early evening feeling quite liberated today at not eating but knowing tomorrow is another day and I can eat what I fancy.

Am surprised at how i'm not starving as did circuit training last night and normally would be starving the day after as I would feel I could east loads more due to all the cold I had burnt of the day before!

Miffytastic · 01/05/2013 15:08

Have you seen Mimi Spencer is on the webchat tomorrow?

Just got a delivery of a size 12 dress which I'm debating whether to keep or send back... it's 'thinspirational'... i.e. tight on the tummy still and I don't know if I'm foolish keeping it and hoping i will fit into it?! It fits, but looks better with a few pounds / half a stone off... hmmm.... I bought it for a night out in 2 weeks time. What would you do?!

ElizaCBennett · 01/05/2013 15:11

Thanks all for your congrats!

Aiming for another 36 hour fast today, started ok just a couple of teas so far. I must admit I don't normally eat until the evening anyway, so will see how I feel later. If I cannot manage not to eat today I will just have some salad, but I really want to do the 36 hour fast and hopefully see the weight start to shift again.

If I can do the 36 hours successfully I can see this working out for me long term, just got to get over this stall first!

Also that will be my fasting done until after the weekend, happy days!!!

ElizaCBennett · 01/05/2013 15:13

Miffy Only you know whether you are likely to get into it in that time. I still have stuff I bought at my lightest four years ago that still have the labels on!

DesperateDietingHousewife · 01/05/2013 15:27

Miffy why don't you keep it for a bit if it doesn't have to be taken back for 28 days and see how it looks in two weeks?

Mummytime V impressed at your run-I'm not brave enough to try any hard-core exercise on a FD yet!

Emily I started on the 11th APril so just worked out that I'm starting my fourth week of fasting and allowing for all the ups and downs, have only lost 2lbs. I would really love to lose a few more before a family wedding at the end of the month.

akarucker · 01/05/2013 15:41

miffy I would send it back! I have a wardrobe full of thinspirational clothes and all it does it depress me! Better to get, and wear, something that fits well so that you feel great, instead of the clothes feeling tight and making you feel like you haven't done enough.

Sunshine78 · 01/05/2013 15:57

Emily keep it up may lose loads in one go I know sometimes I do.

Currently having a ten minute hunger pang just keep telling myself it will pass!

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 16:35

I'm doing 5:2 as I thought 4:3 might be a bit much while ebf.
But might step it up?
NFC today. No bingeing. But I ate lunch late so I'm worried I won't be hungry for delicious garlic chicken supper.

ceebeegeebies · 01/05/2013 16:36

I haven't had a chance to catch up on all your messages today but can I just say why I love this WOE so much...this afternoon, I picked DS1 up from school and took him to Starbucks for a treat. I had a chocolate cream frappuccino with whipped cream and a marshmallow twizzle and did not feel one pang of guilt because I know I am easily within my TDEE for the day. How great is that?

I was a bit downhearted yesterday because my fasting day was difficult but today I realise why it is worth persevering with Smile

Will catch up now Wink

Dotty342kids · 01/05/2013 16:40

That's the spirit ceebeegeebies Smile, enjoy those eating days I say!

Dotty342kids · 01/05/2013 16:58

ooh, and after a little post zumba step on the scales this morning I might, just might have some good news re. weigh in tomorrow Grin

akarucker · 01/05/2013 17:01

Note to self: don't put a roast chicken in the oven on a fast day! This smell is killing me...

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 18:07

Oh, yes roast chicken is heavenly food.
Enjoy the aroma.

swallowedAfly · 01/05/2013 18:10

congrats eliza Smile

well i managed nothing till just a minute ago - have had a slice of toast before whizzing out to my singing practice. had a long day at work and was fine without food but did suddenly feel really dehydrated and drank a litre and a half of water in less than an hour.

i'm also having a few sips of the pinotage i resisted opening last night daren't have more than a few sips after a 44 hour fast or i'll be on the floor.

i have felt brilliant today. will eat more when i get home from choir practice but keep it light for today and hopefully won't feel the need to eat too much tomorrow either.

Dotty342kids · 01/05/2013 18:34

44hrs saf Shock, surely you're not fasting again tomorrow? Normal eating day including cake and carbs I would hope!!

stickygingerbread · 01/05/2013 18:54

saf I have the same question as Dotty342kids. Don't go to extremes please.

I am a seldom seen poster, but everything is going very well and I've come to post a status update for those who wonder about progress over the long term and maintaining the lifestyle.

I started ADF in January after a diagnosis of PCOS, hormonal imbalace arising from high insulin levels. I picked ADF because my dh had already been doing it since spring the previous year, and he had a stack of books on low-glycemic eating and the benefits of fasting. Also since having 2 dcs, I have been 3 stone overweight from pre-baby days and unable to bring off so much as a pound. The doctor explained that PCOS people often have trouble losing weight. So in addition to doing ADF, I also made dietary changes in what I ate on both on and off days. I increased the veg and protein, cut the milk for a while (revised later), and minimized rice, potatoes and flour products.

I weigh about every 6 weeks so far, because otherwise it mentally undermines me as I tend to obsess. I have also been doing fasting glucose and cholesterol testing.

Here is the progress:
Starting weight was about 165
Early February: fasting glucose: 85, weight 160, waist 33"
Mid March: fasting glucose: 90, weight 150, waist 30"
May 1: fasting glucose: 74, weight 141, waist 28"

Desirable fasting glucose i considered to be

Dotty342kids · 01/05/2013 19:09

that's brilliant stickygingerbread, you must feel so chuffed after not being able to lose that weight in other ways!

DorisShutt · 01/05/2013 19:13

Hello! Today was my first day doing the 5:2 and I'm quite excited as I managed to do 568 calories according to MFP. It's probably less than that, as I cooked pasta for DH and I; he ate the lions share, but it was easier going for a rounded calculation rather than getting too specific!

I've had a few hunger pangs during the day, but I've been in the office and found that sparkling water has helped more than still - and I had a cup-a-soup at lunch time to help fill the void and to stop my blood sugar crashing.

I'm also quite proud that I resisted finishing off DS' choccy pudding! Grin

This WOL might actually be doable!
