The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Coming to the end of a 2 day consecutive fast and definitely shouldn't have tried to exercise this evening! Now feeling extremely dizzy every time I stand up, not helped by only having 250cal left for dinner, I don't think.

Oh well, eat tomorrow!!

Chipstick10 · 30/04/2013 21:50

Not that I exercise but if I did I defo wouldn't do it on a fast day. I never have much energy on a fast day.

ceebeegeebies · 30/04/2013 21:54

thanks for the words of wisdom Smile

I was really good all day at work...resisted cupcakes and celebration chocs so maybe the day wasn't such a let down after all!

I am such a carb addict I can't see how a couple of boiled eggs are going to cut it for my lunch...

ALittleStranger · 30/04/2013 21:57

Itsaboatjack I've found yoga OK, but running the day after a fast day last week made me think I was going to throw up. I find exercise makes me very hungry so I've been wary of doing it on a fast day.

Itsaboatjack · 30/04/2013 22:18

AlittleStranger have you been fasting long? When I first started I didn't attempt to exercise on fast days. Now though I do either a HIIT workout or a 4 mile run on fast days and have done up to 11 miles on a day after. I've still got 2 stone to lose though so maybe I have adequate fuel for it? If you're only looking to lose 5-10lbs I imagine you are already fairly slim and so won't have as much fat to use for fuel? Just a thought, have no idea really :)

ceebeegeebies · 30/04/2013 22:19

Alittlestranger - I am with you on the exercise, I honestly don't think I could do it at the end of a fast day safely and effectively so I am trying to do it on my feed days as much as possible.

So how do you tell the difference between head hunger and real hunger?

ALittleStranger · 30/04/2013 22:26

Jack, no this is only my third fast day. I'm hoping you're all right and it does get easier.

Southeastdweller · 30/04/2013 22:27

Hi everyone and welcome to newbies. We're all very unviper-like here, you know Grin

Fasted today and had a bit of an odd one. I had a coffee and a gorgeous miso soup from Itsu but because I again hadn't brought in an apple I got peckish in the afternoon and grabbed the nearest things to hand - three biscuits. Funny thing is though is that after I ate them I didn't feel hungry. Kept drinking water and went to the gym but I didn't feel like anything other than a decaf coffee and a tablespoon of reduced fat hummus and a teaspoon of chutney. The online food order arrived an hour ago and I didn't fancy picking on any of it, which is the first time this has happened.

I've got a feeling I'm going to plateau or gain this week because I don't feel any lighter. After a few successful weeks of 4:3 I'm back on 5:2 so possibly feeling a bit insecure.

ceebee I'm also a carb fiend, or at least I was - I've been known to eat a loaf of bread a day on top of meals and other snacks. I agree with itsaboat - cut out carbs on fast days, force yourself if you have to at least for two days. It's really not bad, especially when you remember you can have that toast or whatever tomorrow. Try some soups at work. If you're in London then the miso soup is good because of the tofu and seaweed so you feel it's a bit carbs and satisfying. I have other soups from other places sometimes on fast days, always without bread which I never thought would happen.

MeNeedShoes · 30/04/2013 22:51

Loving all the tips here :) Gearing up for fast day #2 tomorrow. My initial goal is to get to 7pm tomorrow night on 500 cal, then see how far I get after that. I am still getting a bit of natural advantage from BFing so hoping it will balance out if I need a bit of toast before bed.

Good luck fellow Wed fasters :)

BsshBossh · 30/04/2013 22:55

ceebee for me fasting started to really feel normal and natural in my 10th week - so 20 fasts in.

ALittleStranger try again with the exercise after you've fasted a few more weeks. It may get easier as your body adjusts to fasting.

mttum thanks for the reminder of the Riley book. Though I've reached goal weight I still want to manage my non-fast days better (still have a tendency to eat through greed).

Southeastdweller · 30/04/2013 22:56

Sorry, I meant to add that the miso soups at Itsu are good.

fluffypillow · 30/04/2013 23:06

My third fast went ok today. Ate at 8pm last night, then went through to dinner at 5pm today when I had a gorgeous Quorn curry (could have eaten it twice Grin ) .

I seem to feel a bit spaced out later on in the afternoon on a fast day. It's like people are talking to me, and I can't take in what they are saying Confused I hope that will get better as time goes on. I was reading DD (2yrs) a story before dinner, and the words were coming out wrong, she was saying 'no Mummy, that's not right' (grin) I just felt so dreamy!

Feeling a bit rumbly now, but quite pleased this fast is nearly done, and looking forward to breakie in the morning!

I was pleased to see that I had lost 2.2lb in my first week, so that has confirmed it to me ............I have to give this my best shot. I've never been on a plan before where I've eaten the lovely things I have this week and still lost weight.

I'm very happy Smile
and a little bit hungry Grin

Nighty night all Smile

MeNeedShoes · 30/04/2013 23:14

Bsssh that's a long time Confused

Fluffy I got that dreamy feeling too, told DH I felt a bit ahem stoned! It was only my first fast yesterday so I wonder if it goes away after a while.

Emilythornesbff · 30/04/2013 23:31

So I did my fast of 24 hours over two days and I don't know how I feel about it; better because I was able to eat on both days or worse because it feels like two days of " dieting". But it fitted in well with social plans so that's good.
Next fast day is Thursday and I'm toying with a total fast for the day (with the possible exception of marmite drink hmmmmm)

Just reading "the fast diet" book. V motivational.
Em

Emilythornesbff · 30/04/2013 23:33

I like he sound of that "dreamy" feeling.
Is that a lipolysis induced calm thing?

Itsaboatjack · 30/04/2013 23:48

southeastdweller I love Itsu, not tried the Miso soup yet though I may have to give it a go later in the week.

virginposter · 01/05/2013 00:07

I've only just caught up on todays posts as have been out all day so I'm a bit behind. Earlier someone was asking about counting calories on NFD's and whether going from 4:3 to 5:2 would make them put the weight back on.
As an 'oldie' (9months) I've tried most permutations and found out which worked for me best (but everyone will be different so give it all a go until you find what works for you).
I've never counted calories on NFD's but there was a time when I was not eating enough and I didn't lose anything (no starvation mode, just didn't eat enough for my body to want to 'give it up'). So I ate more but not to excess and I lost again.
I started off doing 5:2 and lost about 1lb a week and occasionally 2lbs but eventually I stopped losing so changed to 4:3 and then saw either 1 or 2 lbs per week loss. If I go back to 5:2 I don't lose anything but I don't gain anything either.
As I'm so close to my goal, I'm happy to do 4:3 until then. On maintenance I'll try 5:2 to hopefully hold steady and to reap the health benefits.
HTH.

virginposter · 01/05/2013 00:27

ceebeegeebies for me the difference between head hunger and real hunger is easy. If it's head hunger then I feel like something like cake, choc or biscuits. Then I remember B&W's advice to not have anything for 20 mins and wait. Usually that does the trick and I just have a cup of peppermint tea and all's well. But if it's real hunger then I feel the need for real food, something filling but lowish calorie like an apple or yoghurt or rice cakes, then I usually have it without feeling bad.

Endofmyfeather · 01/05/2013 02:55

Hi everyone! First time poster but long time lurker on these threads and I firstly just really wanted to say thank you to you all for your (unknowing!) support. I've been doing 5:2 since 18th Feb and have lost about 16lbs since then which for someone who has never lost more than 5lbs on a 'diet' is absolutely revolutionary!

I have only found it really hard once, but I've gradually cut down my food. My first few weeks were more like 700-800 cals on a fast day and then the last few weeks have been 431 in just one evening meal (I eat the same meal each time). I don't obsessively count cals on NFD but use mfp just to keep them around my tdee, and am usually between 2-3000 cal deficit per week. It started to get 'easy' around week 7 and now I don't really think about it, it's just part of my weekly routine.

I definitely agree with the distinction between head hunger and genuine hunger - and as a compulsive evening snacker I would also add in 'hand hunger'. Sometimes I'm just looking for something to occupy my hands so have started painting my nails a lot more or colouring in Smile

The other thing I've really noticed is the association that we as a society have with fixed meal times. I've had to really fight myself to eat when I'm actually hungry rather than just because its lunchtime, and this is an ongoing challenge for me.

Anyway, didn't mean to post an essay and will likely go back to lurking as I'm in west coast Canada at the mo so harder to follow posts, but really wanted to say thanks to everyone for the support Thanks With another 9lbs to go 'til my first target (a BMI of 22), I'm going nowhere Wink

mummytime · 01/05/2013 05:58

Hi Endofmyfeather!
Well today is my second routine fast day. I ate at 8pm last night. I thought it was going to be a disaster as I woke in the night and felt hungry, however I managed to get back to sleep.

I chose Wednesdays as I have quite a busy morning. Actually I always take an apple in the car with me, just in case. As I don't want to be utterly ravenous when I am sitting with the little children. I always stop before getting out of the car to see how I feel, but I haven't needed it yet.
I am thinking of going for a run after I've visited the children.

DH is out tonight so I might have a calorie counted meal for myself tonight, and just cook for the children.

swallowedAfly · 01/05/2013 06:59

itsabout - well done for just taking action rather than getting demotivated.

stranger - if you can't face aerobic exercise on fast days do some resistance training instead. have read a bit about fasted exercise and how people who really take their training seriously feel about it and it definitely seems to be higher impact to exercise in a fasted state - you will be burning fat. but some who find they can't or don't like to do aerobic training work on muscle improvement instead on fast days. the higher your muscle content the higher your metabolism (short cut way of saying it - not entirely accurate but your body does use more calories just to tick if you have more muscle) so it's a good plan anyway. sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs Smile personally i just wear a pedometre and set a target of say 20,000 steps on a fast day and walk everywhere and don't sit still too long on a fast day if i want to boost things along.

well i made it through yesterday - ds got clingy and wanted to sleep in my bed which helped actually as i just had to lay down and go to sleep rather than contemplate the contents of the kitchen.

now at about 34hrs of total fast minus one marmite drink last night. will probably go through now till about 5 without eating which will be what - 44hrs i think. i don't tend to eat in the day anyway and once i've slept i don't feel any hungrier for having fasted the day before itms.

scales today say 10.13.2 so allegedly 2.6lbs loss from one days total fast. we shall see.

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 07:00

Nfd today and I don't feel hungry yet (been up much of the night)
Is it worh a mini fast u til supper? Then another mini fast on Thursday?
So that would be a 24 hr fast from mon pm to tues pm, then no food u til we'd supper and possibly the same on Thursday or reverse (breakfast or lunch on Thursday) pooh, it's too hard to decide. It's so convenient not eating in the day IYSWIM.

swallowedAfly · 01/05/2013 07:01

can honestly saying when i'm feeling cold and/or hungry or a bit foggy on a fast going for a walk sorts me out. i've read others elsewhere that exercise is the key to getting through the coldness and foggy times and it certainly seems true to my experience. i go for a brisk walk though rather than running for miles Wink

Emilythornesbff · 01/05/2013 07:02

Well done SAF

swallowedAfly · 01/05/2013 07:03

thanks. it's hard to 'feel' anything about a loss at the minute because it just goes back on again recently. i'm hoping i can manage another complete fast this week to finally shake off this bounce zone.
