The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Slippery here...fancied a change.Thank you for the answers Peplum and Betsy. I am losing but slowly and I wonder if I need to count....but I don't want to. If this is going to be for the rest of my life I don't think I can always be watching myself like that.

But I will try and improve my NFD eating (NFD excellent idea) I do need to work on my snacking. Still I basically think I lose a little bit when I'm not so good and I lose more when I eat healthily. So hopefully I'll get there slowly.

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 18:12

oh and i meant to say welcome to all the new posters! Smile

Elderberries · 30/04/2013 18:18

SAF I've been reading your posts with interest. Do you have any idea if you are overheating on NFD's?

You can do it. Think about what you can have in the morning.

BetsyBell · 30/04/2013 18:38

Doing all right over here saf thank you :) Unusually for me I haven't had an appetite today so I'm doing better than usual and I'll definitely be having an early night which makes it a bit easier! Good work with the steps, I'm envious actually and good call with the bath and book idea. I once took up knitting as a diversionary tactic to stop snacking in the evening - you just can't physically eat with needles in your hands.

Elderberries A good place to start is by cutting out a snack you've got into a routine of having eg, snacks and booze on a weekday evening or coffee and cake mid morning. We humans very easily create associative habits which once formed seem to be a necessary part of the day but can be broken with a bit of mindful consideration. Make treats an occasional thing rather than a daily expectation.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 30/04/2013 18:43

Fasted yesterday. NFD today and started off well. Didn't feel hungry this morning so waited until about 9.30 before having a couple of tangerines. About 10.30, I thought I would treat myself with a small cake and a cup of tea. Well, one led to one more, that led to another....this is what I was like before, bingeing on sweet stuff. I don't crave it as much and I feel more aware of what I'm eating but if I start, I just don't seem able to stop.

I've eaten a lot of sugar today and it's given me a splitting headache. The headaches have only started in the last year-my body is obviously trying to tell me something (stop eating the crap maybeHmm). I seem to be going a bit lot mad on NFDs. I keep reading that it settles down-has anyone experienced this when they first started this WOE?

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 18:47

thanks elderberries. i don't eat in the morning - generally don't eat until after work and school pick up. it's the evenings that are my downfall. i don't think i'm overeating enough to merit the gains. my tdee hasn't changed that much from losing a stone and yet the 5:2 has ceased to be enough for me to lose weight. i am definitely eating less than i was initially so... don't know what's going on really.

betsy - i've already cleansed and moisturised my face more thoroughly than i ever do and located a razor to brave shaving my 'been tucked away all winter' legs when i have my bath. may exfoliate and all sorts just to keep busy and away from the kitchen. if that fails i will meditate. must.beat.the.evening.munchies. not to mention staying away from the pinotage.

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 18:52

x posted - desperate i think you should go to the doctor and say about the headaches. it can be a sign of pre-diabetes and if it a change for you it is worth checking out imo.

Elderberries · 30/04/2013 19:02

SAF could you be under eating and be in starvation mode?

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 19:05

starvation mode is a myth - unless you literally are starving which takes a long time Smile no i doubt i'm under eating. thanks for thoughts though.

monster54 · 30/04/2013 19:48

So first ever consecutive fast soon to be completed! I'm going to head to bed with a warm drink soon. Finished around 500cals on both days.

I feel fine even though it TOTM I've not been ravenous at all. And found it surprisingly Ok. Both days I went 24 hours before eating.

I'm going to have a NFD tomorrow and fast Thurs....ready for a busy food orientated weekend!

akarucker · 30/04/2013 19:51

So I was just out for dinner with my mother. She knows I've just lost a stone, and vaguely knows how, but doesn't really 'get it'. I tucked into a burger, half a pint, and shared a pudding. She said "why are you doing this? I thought you were losing weight! Why are you ruining all your work?" Ha....LOVE this woe!!!! Fast day tomorrow! Grin

DesperateDietingHousewife · 30/04/2013 19:58

Thanks SAF. May get that checked out.

Very impressive Monster- Enjoy your NFD tomorrow!!

mttum · 30/04/2013 20:16

Well I've just sat patiently with DD while she ploughed her way through enormous dinner and I had cup of hot water with Marigold stock. Either she is heading for a growth spurt or she's just got hollow legs. This is my second fast day of three this week (if you count Sunday as the start of the week which I was taught to!) Just having the one bouillon drink, and plenty of water and (black) tea and coffee, for 36 hours. Looking forward to breakfast! I've done well in terms of compliance and weight loss in the first week, but am planning to switch from 4:3 to 5:2 next week, and maybe do the 500-600 cals on fast days too. I'm a bit concerned that my body will have got used to the 4:3 and that I'll put the weight back on when going to 5:2. Has anyone else tried starting on 4:3 then going to 5:2? Any thoughts?

Has anyone else come across a book called "Eating Less" by Gillian Riley? It looks at food addiction and simple strategies to overcome it, and I am using some of the ideas from the book together with this woe, as I don't want to be counting cals on NFDs but at the same time don't want to be undoing the good work.

It's lovely to have found such a great support network, and I haven't even explored the rest of the site properly yet! Thanks everyone Flowers

monster54 · 30/04/2013 20:45

Thanks ddh has taken me 10 weeks to build up to that!!!

Well mttum I believe there is a lot of evidence to suggest the loss is no quicker on 4:3 than 5:2. I'm doing 4:3 today simply to compensate for a heavy weekend coming up!! Maybe try and reduce your calories slightly on your eating days on 5:2 first if your worried?

ceebeegeebies · 30/04/2013 20:51

Quick question to you experienced 5:2 dieters Smile

When do the fasting days get easier?? I am on fast no 5 today and it has been VERY difficult Sad I managed to get to midday with nothing then had 4 ryvitas with cheese spread, then an apple at about 3.30 then a carton of soup at 7...then I have just caved and had a bar of chocolate as the hunger pangs were just too much. Still only 600 cals in the day but why was it so difficult today? I thought they were supposed to get easier, not harder??

BetsyBell · 30/04/2013 21:07

Aka I LOVE that Grin

ceebee You do get used to it but some are always harder than others. Try having some protein on your fast day next time - boiled egg or two, bit of fish or lean chicken or whatever - good and satisfying without using up too many calories. Crackers always leave me hungry and soup needs to be stew-like to stop me from resorting to prowling the cupboards when I shouldn't be.

Desperate I get get headaches when I've over eaten sugar - for me it means it's time to quit the stuff for a while as it's highly addictive. I had my fasting blood glucose levels tested last year and the levels were really good so it isn't necessarily a pre-diabetes indication. I do have diabetes in the family and is one of the reasons for me to do this WOE - type 2 is completely avoidable.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 30/04/2013 21:18

mttum-I bought that book by Gillian Riley a couple of years ago-one of many, many books I have bought to try and stop myself over-eating. Didn't end up reading the whole thing though. May dig it out and have another look.

ceebee-did you have lots of water/other liquids today? I'm not sure why it would be harder. I had my 5th fast yesterday and I think that at the start, it just takes your body a bit of getting used to perhaps? Maybe someone more experienced will be able to shed some light on it. In the book, I remember Mimi Spencer saying some days will seem very easy and others like wading through treacle (or something along those lines!).

I'm fasting again tomorrow-trying 4:3 this week to try and get a bit lower, i keep putting on and taking off the same 1-2 lbs. Am worried I'll find it hard too because of all the rubbish I've eaten today. Have a headache and feel crappy-that what eating crap does!! However, am looking forward to that cleansed feeling and giving my body a rest.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 30/04/2013 21:26

Thanks Betsy. Type 2 diabetes is also in my family. My dad and brother (who is only 30Shock) but he has eaten a bad diet from a young age, 2 litres of coke a day and no fruit or veg....

I am desperate to avoid diabetes so although I really want to lose weight, I also want the health benefits that go along with it. I'm apple shaped, which is the worst for visceral fat and the unhealthiest shape to be.

Everyone always says I don't need to lose weight but my waist measurement is ridiculous. I'm good at hiding it with my clothes and holding my tummy in but I'm sick of buying things to hide my tummy. I want to be able to wear fitted clothes and not have a spare tyre.

postmanpatscat · 30/04/2013 21:31

greenfig yes, I log all my food and exercise and try to stick to TDEE. I'm not confident enough to relax on that yet but will do so when I'm maintaining.

ALittleStranger · 30/04/2013 21:33

delurks I am insensible with hunger. I don't know how you've all been doing this for so long.

I have 5-10lbs to lose (depending on how bothered I am about being skinny as oppossed to slim) and dreading this. I'm doing 6:1 at the moment because I find fast days very difficult, but maybe I need to suck up 5:2.

I find it very difficult to focus on anything and also dislike not being able to exercise, which is why I'm going 6:1. If I could lose weight from exercise alone I totally would prefer that, but I am a greedy pig who enjoys eating out and drinking too much so I need the solid calorie deprivation.

monster54 · 30/04/2013 21:38

ceebee...I'm in mt 10th week and I am just finding it easier..

Its a lot of head hunger as opposed to physical. Remember your going against life time habits.

Plenty of water, and I count milk in my tea etc and count those cals. Those are the little things that keep me going!!!

Itsaboatjack · 30/04/2013 21:39

Evening all, and welcome to new fasters. It's great how more and more people are joining, and I'm so impressed with how some of you are getting stuck straight in to the 24hr and even 36hr fasts. It took me many weeks to work my way up to that.

Well I've been bouncing around the same 3lbs for 5weeks now. I wouldn't really call it a plateau though, more just plain over eating on NFDs. I have had a few occasions out which have included quite a lot of eating and drinking and also a few failed fasts as well as just plain greedy days, like some of you i also struggle most in the evenings. Hence I've had a few days away from the thread to stop stressing about it and just chill for a while.

When I weighed myself yesterday morning I was 6lbs up on my lowest at 3 weeks ago!!! So with new resolve I have fasted yesterday and today with only water, black coffee, herbal teas and a couple of boullion drinks. I've had a few tummy rumbles but nothing too bad, I did have a massive case of head hunger this afternoon though, luckily I was out running a few errands and not near any food at the time.

Now I just need to carry that resolve over to my eating days.

monster54 · 30/04/2013 21:40

Sorry I meant I have it and it gets me through the day. And count it...

I don't take anything to work and temptation isn't there...if there's cakes or whatever I just tell myself 'tomorrow, tomorrow'...

DeckSwabber · 30/04/2013 21:44

3rd fast today. Porridge in the morning then just tea with milk and glasses of water. Went swimming this evening so that I don't have to watch my boys scoffing their dinner. Peckish now but I won't eat until morning.

Colleagues at work are tormenting me by eating hot lunches at their desks and passing round chocolate. Grr!

Itsaboatjack · 30/04/2013 21:45

ceebee I find avoiding carbs completely on fast days makes them easier, and of course drinking plenty of water.

AlittleStranger why can you not exercise? Do you have an injury or do you think you can't exercise on fast days? Me, and plenty of others on here do with no ill effects.
