The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm getting a bit confused here because I'm doing the MM version where you eat 500 cals. Is that okay? A lot of you seem to be doing total fasts Confused

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 14:20

Had my omelette thing. It was tasty but small. I actually feel more hungry now not less hungry! Is that normal?

Emilythornesbff · 29/04/2013 14:29

I think it takes a while to settle down to it shoes
But I am not an expert, obviously.
I've been keeping to

Breadandwine · 29/04/2013 14:42

Shoes that's how most of us started off -

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 14:48

Just back from my "over 40" health check! Oh yes, cheery stuff. Despite hardly drinking, exercising 3-4 times per week and having lost 8lbs I stll have 0.5% over what's considered to be acceptable levels of cholesterol. Grrr!
I hardly eat any cheese / high fat products other than my love for cake / chocolate so am feeling a bit miffed.
Anyone got any advice?

Farewelltoarms · 29/04/2013 14:57

Hello fasting day today. Had massive bingey weekend away with friends but my net weight loss was still over 2lb for the week. It's so far 3.5lb in two weeks with occasional dips to far below that. If I can keep it this consistent I'll be really happy.
I'm 5'7" and weigh 10.10. Would like to be 9 something by the summer which feels pretty doable. Significant birthday in July, party etc, would like to be target weight for then.
Itsu lunch. Buckets of black coffee. I do find myself longing for bedtime on fast days though, which doesn't seem mentally very healthy.
Re. sizes, I think at this weight I'm usually a size 12, though gawd knows what I'd be in Top Shop. Plus size probably.

MelanieCheeks · 29/04/2013 15:10

Dotty, cholesterol is largely genetic. I think they've admitted that cholesterol in food does not become cholesterol in your blood, so enjoy your cake and chocolate guilt-free! "They" keep lowering the target level anyway, the swines. 0.5% over doesn't seem too worrying, is it?

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 15:36

Thanks Emily and Breadandwine :) The hunger has gone off me again now. I think I'm so unused to being hungry ever that I have to learn to just go with it. Not looking forward to a hungry night in bed Confused

BetsyBell · 29/04/2013 16:12

dotty have you got a pre-IF cholesterol reading? It might be that you've actually massively lowered it already! 0.5% over sounds pretty ok - was the doctor concerned?

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 16:13

Melanie that's cheered me up greatly, thank you Smile. My mum's is also slightly on the high side despite her being in a very healthy BMI range, with a good healthy diet and very fit and active so you may have a point. Damn it though, it's annoying when I consider myself healthy and active to have something telling me "could do better!"

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 16:45

Going to try and stall dinner until a bit later than normal, rather than 6pm. DH had decent lunch at work so hopefully he won't be starving!

akarucker · 29/04/2013 17:00

Thank you to whoever raved about the Linda McCartney lentil pie. I bought one and just ate it. You're right. Absolutely delicious (and I usually run a mile from any kind of 'vegetarian' food). I'll get it again, and at almost 400 cals, next time I'll have it with a giant pile of veg to make a 500 cal dinner. Very satisfying. Although I did cave early today so consequently the hunger demon is awake!!

Anyway, enough about food...(I tend to obsess about delicious food on a fast day!). This was also the first time I've fasted with a slight hangover. Much harder than usual I must say.

Hope everyone's Monday is going well. Remember, you can eat it tomorrow....

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 17:19

ooh, I've not seen that pie (am a half arsed, lapsed vegetarian so like that sort of food), I'll look out for that!

swallowedAfly · 29/04/2013 17:21

glad to see i have good company for fasting tomorrow Smile

today i had vegetarian spaghetti bolognese prepared and served by buddhist nuns - delicious. now ds is hankering for sausage, oven chips and peas. not something we'd normally have but don't like to say no so that will be dinner along with a glass of wine. i don't calorie count so no clue if that adds up to some obscene quantity. unusual for me to have 2 full meals in a day. will try to avoid snacking before bedtime.

incidentally i made the mistake of asking the cook why the spaghetti was so delicious and she told me she cooks it with lots of oil then puts it in a big tray and adds more olive oil and lets it sit a while. so basically she double coats it in fat Grin was the best spaghetti i've ever tasted though.

swallowedAfly · 29/04/2013 17:22

x posted dotty - lapsed vegetarian here too but very rarely cook or eat meat at home. do like it when i eat out though.

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 17:30

Rucker where did you get the lentil pie?

SAF am drooling at the spaghetti! :o

Okay, I'm not hungry BUT I keep thinking about food. Is this normal? I think I am overly attached to food psychologically Blush

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 17:32

that spaghetti does sound nice saf. If you don't go too mad on oven chips I doubt your cals for the day will have been too bad actually. won't have been many in the veg topping on the spaghetti Smile

akarucker · 29/04/2013 17:44

MNS I got it from Waitrose. It was in their vegetarian prepared meals section. It comes in a pot a bit like the Innocent pots.

wonderingagain · 29/04/2013 17:48

Probably had most of my cals for the day. 50ml milk left and about 200 cals to go.

greenfig · 29/04/2013 18:27

saf am intrigued by your job! Italian lunch with nuns Confused
Enjoy your bangers & feel strong for a good day tomorrow, I am joining you Smile
sunshine how was your day? Hope you find a buddt with PCOS to share notes/progress.

Twinmama32 · 29/04/2013 18:34

hi sunshine i was diagnosed with pcos about 4 years ago, I've since had twins who are now two but my weight rocketed to 14 stone 7Ibs since they were born! Tried to go back on metformin which worked wonders before babies but found I couldn't remember to take the pills or forgot to refill prescription such was my exhausted baby brain! so resigned myself to being bigger till I felt ready to tackle it. 10 weeks ago I discovered 5:2 and I've lost 17Ibs very easily and with no additional medication. Also my moods have been brilliant as I've found myself to be emotionally down beforehand, not so now! The only thing that has been affected are my periods, they were actually quite regular before starting 5:2 now my cycle is abit all over the place but I am getting them just can't set my watch by them anymore!
I'd say def worth a try, good luck! Smile

LexingtonBear · 29/04/2013 18:54

Aka - glad you liked the pie! I've got so much inspiration from these threads that it is nice to be able to give one tiny recommendation back! I've just eaten one too, with a pile of celery, and feel very full! I'm off to my orchestra rehearsal now so will have to avoid the biscuits at the interval but am feeling confident (hopefully not famous last words!). A good fast day, all in all - but massively busy with work which always helps.

Hope everyone else is doing well with Monday fasts

wonderingagain · 29/04/2013 18:59

That's very inspiring twinmama. Well done and congratulations. It really is amazing how this thing works.

What you say about mood is interesting, it has affected me too. I think I avoid a lot of emotional stuff by eating and without the food as a distraction I feel more confident to accept my emotional state and deal with it. I also feel more in control generally.

Sunshine78 · 29/04/2013 19:02

Twinmama32 Ta am willing to give anything a go to shift the weight. Just been put on the mini pill for symptoms I was lucky I got pregnant twice but the lady year the symptoms of pcos have been getting worse and I know losing weight will help but nothing so far has NM budged any

Have survived the day on 500 not too bad just have to resist snacking this evening now!

How does everyone cope when not fasting and making sure you don't just eat got England?

Mrsrobertduvall · 29/04/2013 19:20

I am doing the 2 day diet....not calorie restricted on those days, just no carbs. Have lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks.
And haven't eaten pasta or bread at all, even on the normal eating days.
