The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Catsrus - good point about muscle tone. I am also 5ft 8 and if I weighed 9 stone I would be far too thin for my frame and probably a size 8 (have never weighed that as an adult so have no idea). However I exercise a lot and have a lot of muscle so I think I weigh more than an average size 16, 5ft 8 person.

swallowedAfly · 29/04/2013 07:29

morning.

back to 11st this morning. can't fast today so will be tomorrow. shan't let it get me down.

good luck to today's fasters Smile

Barbie1 · 29/04/2013 09:58

I've just registered for the London marathon! The lack of food must be getting to me Grin

virginposter · 29/04/2013 10:10

I'm 5'5 aged 59 do moderate exercise and now weigh 10 st 1lb (after being away and putting on 3lbs last week I've lost the 3 plus another 1) which is a new low for me Smile. I'm a size 10 top and bottom so how does that work??
Last week I was determined to get back to my pre 'away' weight so went back to 4:3 (although was a bit lax on my 500 cals - didn't count them just estimated) and also cut out all sugar for the week. This week I intend to keep as my final sugar free week too, up my exercise as I've let it slide recently, and hopefully drop down to 10st. My goal is just a couple of lbs under 10 then onto maintenance properly - I still love this woe even after doing it for about 9 months with a total loss of 30lbs (23lbs on 5:2) - yay Grin

BetsyBell · 29/04/2013 10:26

Saf I'll fast with you tomorrow as I can't today, I really need it after a eatathon weekend and groaning scales this morning.

VP That's wonderful - I've put on 3lbs over the weekend so hoping to be where you are now in a week! Now, if I could just step away from the toast I'll be ok! [note to self: stop buying nice bread]

Good luck today fasters :)

mummytime · 29/04/2013 10:27

virginposter - that sounds great!

I've now been following this WOE for 6 and a bit weeks, about 12 fasts. I have now reached my first personal milestone, the bit of my weight in stones is now 1 less, and I have nearly lost 1 stone in total. I have also lost 2 inches from my hips and waist, which is good.

I am really keeping to a 5:2, although I have had a couple of weeks where this has been hard. On those weeks, I try to make sure I am fasting for at least 16 hours. I think the key thing is this is not a Diet, but a way of eating; so it has to be something I can keep up for the rest of my life. So if I am not going to turn down every invitation for a meal out or a slice of chocolate cake, down for the rest of my life; then I need to be able to see how I can incorporate them into my life now.

I do quite like the feeling of not having eaten for 12 or more hours. The hunger pangs seem so much easier to handle than on a calorie controlled diet. It also seems healthier, as on non-fast days I can eat a wide range of foods, and so get all my nutrients.

I am combining it with drinking a lot of herbal and green teas, and beginning to run, using the Zombie 5K app - as I'm not fit enough for consistent 1 minute runs yet.

Anja1Cam · 29/04/2013 10:46

Hi,

another fasting day here.

Just wanted to join in on the sizing thing:
Of course it depends on the shops as well etc. I am size 12 generally, 1.68cm (5'7") at 64-69kg. At my lowest (ie 64kg/10st where I'm trying to get back to! I can easily fit 10 in the waist (ie skirts or trousers), but not be able to get trousers over my calved or thighs depending on cut. Even now the size 12 trousers are a bit baggy at the waist, I could never go without a belt. And in the back/shoulders I tend to be nearer 14 (M&S especially) although there is not much at the front so many dresses just don't work... Sad

In East I'm a perfect 10 Grin

How hum I don't look quite as freakish as I have just described Grin

GreenEggsAndNichts · 29/04/2013 10:52

Barbie Grin Good luck!

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 10:53

I'm dithering around the 11st mark and am just under 5"4. I'm a comfortable size 14 on bottom, sometimes a 12 on top. I'd like to get to a consisent and comfortable 12 all over!
Fasting today as usual though the realisation just dawned on me that next Monday is a bank holiday and we have family coming for lunch, aargh! Might throw in an extra fast this Sat to minimise the normal weekend scoffing. And as DH away this week can do a mini fast tomorrow or Tues as well as normal fast on Thurs. I so want to see the 10s..... Smile

ceebeegeebies · 29/04/2013 10:55

Saf & Betsy - I will join you in fasting tomorrow Smile After the excesses of the weekend I am actually looking forward to it.

As for today it is not a fast day and me and DS2 have just made chocolate banana bread Grin it is in the oven and smells delicious! !

sausages51 · 29/04/2013 11:26

Well back from all inclusive (inc all alcohol and lunches) have put on 7lbs in one week. But had lost 15lbs since Jan,so am ok. I am so ready to get back on 5:2 because I feel so much better for it-more energetic and healthier. Wish I could have brought back the lovely 80 degree Canaries weather for everyone as well as my additional pounds! :-) cheers-updates later

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 12:07

sausages, don't panic! I was away for a birthday weekend and also put on 1lb per day. One week later and it's gone again, phew.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 29/04/2013 12:08

Hi al.
Week 3 of proper 5:2 and jeans are looser. Today is fast day and is hard as DS up a lot in the night teething, so I am knackered. What wouldn't I give for a cup of milky tea and a sticky bun :)

But giving the 16 hrs a go. Had black coffee at 8am and nothing except a cup of bovril since. Pllleeeaaasssee tell me a cup of bovril is same as black tea or coffee?!! Had a horrible thought that it means I've broken fast.

I don't feel hungry, just tired. Got a big bag of baby spinach to nibble on after 2pm (16hrs) and an M&S carrot soup (180 cals) for tea then early to bed a a big bowl of porridge tomorrow morning!

postmanpatscat · 29/04/2013 12:31

sausages welcome back! Your stats might indicate a 14lb gain for me when I spend two weeks all-inclusive in Lanzarote in August - but I hope not!!

ceebee that sounds yummy...where's the recipe from?

Fast day for me today, going for total fast to make up for the weekend's excesses (hotel stay with cooked breakfasts and 3 course dinners). I only gained 100g, but I'm 300g heavier than I was last Monday morning so action is needed! I'm too close to target to relax just yet, I want to get there first and THEN I can relax.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 29/04/2013 13:00

Hi everyone, hope everyone fasting is doing well. I am doing ok today, drinking loads of water and have had two cups of coffee with a little milk.

Barbie-Shock am seriously impressed-I just could never ever run a marathon. I flirted with running for a while and enjoyed it until I injured myself but only got up to 6k. The thought of running 26 miles makes me feel quite faint!

I had a very bad day yesterday eating all kinds of crap. Was so cross with myself. I didn't even really enjoy it. I'm going to try 4:3 this week as I have a wedding in about 5 weeks and I'm panicking I won't lose much more. I've been weighing myself every day and I was worried as it looks as if I would be putting on what I'd lost in my fasts last week.

I've also picked up a sample of a electrolyte hydration tablet from my gym. Was wondering whether to buy any. It has no sugar, just sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium to maximise fluid uptake-you just put it into your water bottle-wondered what anyone thought or if you use anything like this whilst fasting?

monster54 · 29/04/2013 13:01

Fast day here too ladies......I'm going for my first 24 hours without any food!!!

I ate at 8pm last night and won't eat till around then tonight. I do have a splash of milk in a couple of cups of tea so not a 'strict' nothing....

But about as extreme as I can handle at work...tired!!

It is TOTM and I'm feeling really run down, but it wasn't too crazy a weekend. A little indulgence here and there but not too excessive.

Hopefully I'll be back on track with a loss this week!!

Talking about sizes I am 5ft 7inches and 11st 6.25lbs....my lowest was the week before at 11st 5.5lbs. I am stuck between a 14 and a 12. Small on top so a 12 fits but then definitely a 14 bottom. Although I have a couple of 14 bottoms I couldn't now wear without a belt.

I have so many things going on now I'm having to buy 14's to fit nicely (if a little baggy) but 12 is too tight....

I wish I could hold off for another couple of months and hopefully be in a comfortable 12....with a healthy BMI and full of confidence!!

monster54 · 29/04/2013 13:04

Can I also admit here that shamefully I have had an extreme addiction to aspartame and sweetners. I have gone cold turkey a couple of weeks ago and had some serious tummy upset etc. But so many things have changed in terms of hormonally and clarity of mind I feel a million times better! Teamed with fasting I'm feeling a WHOLE lot better!!

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 29/04/2013 13:15

Hi all, hope everyone's having a good day....

Quick question, does anyone know if illness would be a reason not to fast? I have tonsillitis and am on day 4 of a 7 day antibiotics course. I feel better in myself although am not up to anything very strenuous - would usually fast on a monday, what would you experts advise?

Thank you!

Emilythornesbff · 29/04/2013 13:24

barbie that's so impressive. I always say "one year I'll do that" but so far haven't got round to it.

I'm fairly new to 5:2 and still have a stone of pregnancy weight to shed.
Thought i'd do a 25 hr fast over 2 days (5pm- 5 pm).
It fits in better with other plans for this week.
Anyone do this?
Em

Sunshine78 · 29/04/2013 13:25

Hi all

Its my first day on the 5:2 and so far so good - am trying to drink lots of water!

Have recently been diagnosed with PCOS has any one else on the 5:2 also got PCOS and had any success?

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 13:47

Hey Sunshine another first day faster. Going okay so far although I am a tiny, tiny bit light-headed - have had peppermint tea and an americano so far so probably need to drink more. Going to make my lunch here - scrambled egg with onion and mushroom. Have bought my stir fry veg for tonight too :)

Really cross I had my sweets last night as otherwise I would have made it to 16 hours but it will be about 14 hours so not bad. Then will have tea at 6pm and not have brekkie till tennish tomorrow if I can. Like an idiot I forgot to weigh myself this morning so don't even know my exact starting weight so will have to weigh self tomorrow morning.

Good luck all fasters :)

greenfig · 29/04/2013 13:50

I was planning on fasting today but will join Saf, BVB et al tomorrow as I could feel it was going to be a struggle today. Had all sorts of high cal picnic in snatched moments yesterday as was out all day in the cold & walking up & down a big hill in the wind! Came home & ate 2 platesful of lasagne Shock & 2 giant glasses of red wine.
I am 41, 5'5 hovering around 9.7 with a low of 9.3. I am size 10 top, narrow shoulders & back, & usually size 12 bottoms to accomodate my hips, not so narrow! I always have to wear a belt too monster
I would really like to stabilise between 9 & 9.4 but am wondering if I am actually maintaining on this woe rather than losing after my initial loss. I have an occasional dip but can't really call it a stable loss. Perhaps it's a plateau? Regardless I will carry on as am enjoying the freedom & although could do with losing a few lbs I'm not in too much of a hurry - until I need to dig out my bikini again!!

Barbie1 · 29/04/2013 13:58

emilythornebff this is my second fast and I'm doing 24 hours zero cal from 5pm last night until 5pm today. I don't find it hard or stressful at all. I'm an all or nothing sort of person.

As for the London marathon, I really don't know what I was thinking Hmm I'm pretty fit, having lost 10.5kg since October last year mainly through excercise, but running? I have to get some serious pratice in!

I'm currently 9 stone and 5,3. Ideally I want to be 8 stone but realistically I look a little ill if I go under 8 and a half. I'm hoping with training and excercise I will look leaner than I have ever done regardless of the end weight.

2 more hours Til I can eat...

sausages51 · 29/04/2013 14:15

dotty I'm sure 14lbs won't happen! I was quite greedy unrestrained :-),and postman thanks for the encouraging story. Shall be interested to see what happens now.....

Breadandwine · 29/04/2013 14:18

CrazyHorse I'd coddle myself if I were you - start again when you feel yourself again. Smile

For any gluten free fasters, I've just posted a chick-pea flour 'omelette' recipe on the 5:2 recipe thread - calorie counted and all that!

Plus it's vegan!
