The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

my job is crazy - i couldn't have made it up really. pay is paltry but hours and independence and stuff is great as is getting to meet loads of lovely people and it actually being part of my role to build relationships with them Confused i keep pinching myself as i've had some awful working experiences in the past that have affected my health and sanity.

can't remember who said it but i am definitely overly psychologically dependent on food. more especially in the week or two before my period but that's nearly half my bloody life! had a lovely tea, really enjoyed the comfort food but am already wracking my brains for something to nibble on. even considered putting my bra back on to go to the shop for chocolate Angry

have remembered someone gave me a selection of luxury hot chocolates for christmas and i'm going to attempt to retrain myself to having a cup of that made with skimmed milk at bedtime on an eating day as my sweet comfort when i crave it. i hate how obsessed i feel with food at the minute.

does anyone find when it gets warmer then drops cold again it triggers hunger in them? i've got a feeling this happens every year in periods like this where the temperatures are varying.

Sunshine78 · 29/04/2013 19:41

SwallowedAFly I know where you are coming from I am the world biggest comfort eater and am hoping this will break the cycle and help readdress the balance!

mttum · 29/04/2013 19:45

First week of 4:3 ended this morning, 4lb lost. I have done a full fast on the 3 days, only water and tea/coffee -oh and a marmite drink in the evening, 20 cals I think. It hasn't been too bad for me, and I have enjoyed the feeling of real hunger for a change (weird or what?) I don't expect to keep the rate of weight loss or the regime in the longer term, but just wanted to kick start things and get a bit of encouragement at the beginning. Well I've got that! Will be doing the same this week and then try going to 5:2, with or without the 600 cals, and see how that goes.

For those of you who don't think 0.5lb is much of a weight loss , go to the fridge and get out a half pound of butter or lard, and ask yourself if it was worth getting rid of. I find it quite motivating.

MeNeedShoes · 29/04/2013 19:51

Mttum that's really motivating actually (the butter thing) :)

I may only make it till 9 or 10 tonight but I guess at least it was 24 hours. Will see how I go.

headintheclouds · 29/04/2013 20:23

first time for me I managed 24 hours before I broke my fast. i usually go for 16-18 hours before I have 120-150 cals, and then 300 cals at dinner.
I thought I might give 24 hours a go to see if it would speed up the weight loss a bit for me.( 9 lbs off in 13 weeks I consider slow)
I had a lovely aubergine, spinach and chick pea curry at 7 pm and Im now stuffed !

swallowedAfly · 29/04/2013 20:30

ooh i like the half a pound of butter thought! will try that sometime but then again i'd be seeing the same with the weight gains - pounds of butter reappearing Grin

have managed not to eat anything more so far and hoping i'll get sleepy soon. if needs be i'll try the hot chocolate trick.

it's definitely comfort eating and psychological really because i easily go all day without eating and don't suffer for it - it's the evenings when i'm lying in my bed watching something on the laptop. in an ideal world i guess i'd do more in the evenings but i'm on my own with a child so can't go out to the gym or anything plus i and my son are early risers so i tend to be knackered and ready for bed and watching something on the laptop. then the munchies kick in.

think maybe i need a strategy for those times but no clue what. sorry to waffle on.

BsshBossh · 29/04/2013 20:36

saf I'm a night time eater too because DH works late and DD is asleep so I can't go out at night. I have hobbies (eg reading, knitting, writing) but being housebound at night is a killer as I am always too near the kitchen. The only way I get round it is give in to it - I save most of my daily cals (fast and non-fast days) for the evening time.

Dotty342kids · 29/04/2013 21:16

saf my strategy for evenings like that is a hot bubble bath and a good book to read whilst in it. You can't get into the kitchen / eat whilst in the bath!

wonderingagain · 29/04/2013 21:22

Coped today with 14 hours without food, then around 250 cals. Just had basic but tasty soup and full to bursting!

Think I'll stick to 3 milky coffees per day as that helps ward off the gremlins.

Can't wait to weigh myself tomorrow.

SAF I think this WOE makes you re-think the way you eat and is good for breaking bad habits. Comfort eating is part therapy and part bad habit. Hopefully with your new job you will feel confident to make those changes.

applegate · 29/04/2013 21:26

ooh I like the butter idea too, its very motivating.
we have been away for the wknd and I have so over eaten, it was a lovely wknd but I dont think the calories were worth the work in getting them off again. Nevermind its done now and I have had a good fast today, just got to try for a good week to make up for it....

plecofjustice · 29/04/2013 21:37

Well, psyching up for my first go at 4:3 - fast today, fast tomorrow, fast Thursday. Hoping to reset after a few overindulgent weekends!

LexingtonBear · 30/04/2013 06:33

Grrr...really good fast yesterday, enjoyed it and felt in control and came in at under 500 calories. Just got weighed and have put on 2lbs. I know its not a consistent path to weight loss and I know there are probably all kinds of hormonal reasons for this gain but its the first occasion it has happened and I feel disproportionately upset!

monster54 · 30/04/2013 06:44

I'm with you poj...braving the same this week. Indulgent weekend ahead I need to account for!!

I too love the butter idea....it is a lot!!!

Althought today might end up slightly over 500, I did 24 hours yesterday and hope to do same today with dinner tonight. But DH will not be happy I'm doing 4:3 he thinks I've lost enough....I still a stone more than when I first met him. I'd like to lose at least half that if not all of it!!! He's not so keen!!

Sunshine78 · 30/04/2013 07:05

I did it and I haven't woken up wanting to east the contents of the fridge!

MelanieCheeks · 30/04/2013 07:29

Well done sunshine! I always find that the day after a fast I feel absolutely fantastic.

This morning I am down half a pound, which takes my bmi under the 25 - woohoo! And my body fat is down to 30.1% - if I can get that to under 30 I'll be really pleased.

Fasting yesterday - I went into town at munchtime lunchtime, had my newly strong and long nails painted at Nails Inc, ordered a regular black coffee from a coffee place, which was the size of a small bucket, and then didn't feel like anything else for lunch.

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 07:55

i ended up eating toast and cereal last night. it's ridiculous - i suddenly feel ravenous and like i can't sleep till i fulfill it. today i'm 11.1.8 so in theory i've put on 3.6lbs in two days. that whole 3000cals equals a pound business means nothing to my body.

anyway today is a fast day and i'm in good company.

that's the theory wondering and it seems to have worked that way for lots of people but there's a few of us it hasn't had that effect on sadly. i've been doing this for nearly 3 months now. my eating did improve somewhat and i'm eating less/better than i was 3 months ago but the effects have only gone so far i guess. i really don't want to get into calorie counting and 'dieting' every day of the week. i might as well do a normal diet if that's the case.

have to hope for another gear shift soon and that this is just a blip.

happy fasting to team tuesday Smile

swallowedAfly · 30/04/2013 07:57

i'm hovering close to totm btw which will no doubt be having an effect on my weight and my positivity levels Grin bear with me please.

DeckSwabber · 30/04/2013 08:05

Another one fasting today. Porridge now, then hopefully nothing but drinks from now on.

Went for run yesterday so feeling really virtuous but hoping that doesn't make me too hungry.

Emilythornesbff · 30/04/2013 08:15

Ggrrrrlexington but you know that inexplicable fluctuations are normal.

Those of you doing a 4:3 - kudos! I think 13:1 would be ideal Grin.

Well done sunshine

I am mid-fast (24hrs over 2 days so had v low cal broth for yesterday's supper and no solids until supper tonight.
Totally sabotaged it with a low fat yogurt and large handful of cereal while bfeeding last night Blush.

Feel stronger this morning though. Having "lunch" with a pal so will be drinking herbal tea instead of eating. Not tried a fragmented fast before (tbh I've only done a couple of weeks of this 5:2 thing anyway). Anyone else split their fasts like that?

Stay strong all fellow fasters today Smile
em

mozzarellamummy · 30/04/2013 08:16

Hello ladies.. trying to join you on this thread, I started 5 to 2 yesterday with a fasting day..I'm 10,8 stones and would like to get 9,7 (sorry for the strange numbers but I'm thinking in kgs and converting! Smile)..
I really hope it's the right diet for me..I've been going up and down with my weight since being a teenager.. cakes, buiscuits, chocolates are my best friends and enemies.. I rely much on them as comfort food, and unfortuantely I've much to be comforted about this year..
A practical question.. how much should I dirnk on fast days?
thank you!!!

Emilythornesbff · 30/04/2013 08:16

Oh deckswabber I sooooo miss running. Pelvic floor not up to that yet Grin

Emilythornesbff · 30/04/2013 08:18

mozarella hi. I'm new too.
I think you have to drink approximately ..........loads!

BetsyBell · 30/04/2013 08:20

Right, need to psyche myself up for a fast day today - distinct lack of sleep last night so it's going to be a tough one, but on the other hand the sun seems to be shining which really helps. I know I won't be doing a proper exercise thing today though - haven't done since before I was ill a couple of weeks ago and still haven't got properly back into fasting twice a week. It's fine but I have put on weight and it's all jiggly so need to get a grip and get on with it!

Dotty342kids · 30/04/2013 08:25

mozzarellamummy welcome to the gang! Yes, drink lots and lots of water as not only will it help to alleviate the hunger pangs but it's also necessary to replace the water that you'd normally get in foods.
Weighed in today and am dead on the 11st marker still. Those 10s continue to elude me, but not for much longer!!
Sabotaged my fast day yesterday by having a perfectly under 500 cals chicken / couscous based dinner and then eating the last slice of my birthday cake just before going to bed! What's all that about? Grin. Oh well, today's a normal eating day and then going to pop another fast day in tomorrow.

BetsyBell · 30/04/2013 08:29

Dotty The cake was there that's what it was about Grin - who can resist the lure of delicious homemade (?!) calorific birthday cake? [not me]

I really need to quit the sugar again, clearly didn't do it for long enough last time! Maybe weekdays no sugar for me. It could work... [thinks about plans to cook pumpkin and ginger cheesecake at the weekend - I have to make it, it took me ages to find a can of pumpkin puree!]
