The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wondering - size 12 depends on your height I think. For me to be a confortable size 12 I would need to be around 11 and a half stone but for shorter people, that weight would be more like a 14-16.

swallowedAfly · 28/04/2013 11:22

cold is covered here briefly and the remedy is exercise.

wondering this is a heavy weight for me really. my pre childbearing weight usually sat somewhere between high 9's and low 10's and i had gotten back to that a year or so after having my son. i gained weight in the last year or so. i don't think it's that this is the weight i'm meant to be - don't really buy the idea that you're only meant to be a healthy weight as a teenager.

postmanpatscat · 28/04/2013 11:24

wondering well done on your loss so far. This woe does work well for those with less to lose too, I've lost 17lbs in 9 weeks and am only half a pound from target and comfortably under 9st.

saf glad you stuck with it, you know this works but your body is not a machine and results can be unpredictable.

Can't remember who was asking about bathroom-related side effects but I had those during my first few weeks too, there were a couple of times I hardly dared step away from the toilet! It all settled down though.

swallowedAfly · 28/04/2013 11:28

i agree it works for people with less to lose. it's just clearly going to initially work faster for someone who has been overeating enough to create a large excess of fat because the dip down to 500 will be more of a gradient for them than for someone who was only mildly overeating or eating at their tdee.

thanks postman - i don't know what it is this week - i've felt really negative and uphill struggle-ish about it. don't know if it was just losing nothing from a fast at the beginning of the week or if i'm getting hormonal again already or the weather going hot then cold and triggering appetite or what. sod it. new week starts tomorrow and have to hope it is better.

swallowedAfly · 28/04/2013 11:30

i also felt like avoiding this thread even though i usually post way too much Confused maybe some weird rebellion kicking off in my head. going to take it as ok this is self destruct rearing it's head so you get to choose whether to go with that or to overcome it and move forward. think self destruct is hard wired into me so best i learn how to tell it to fuck the fuck off and then fuck off some more.

EagleRiderDirk · 28/04/2013 11:33

Bsssh Wow - fantastic weight loss and a real inspiration for me as you were where I started (and am still not far off, but only 3 fasts in so far) and have gotten to where I want to be. Thanks for sharing and very well done Flowers

MeNeedShoes · 28/04/2013 12:50

Thanks for the feedback guys :) Definitely going to stick around for motivation. Some of you seem to be doing really well with this.

I probably have about 2 stone to lose (I'd be well into healthy BMI) but how realistic is it to lose 8lbs in the first three to four weeks? I have an event in a few weeks that I'd love to look nice for. Still carrying some baby pudge after all these months so might try the 30 day shred. Anyone try it post CS (months and months on)?

BsshBossh · 28/04/2013 12:51

Thanks everyone Smile.

peplum41 · 28/04/2013 14:47

Sad hey Saf, please dont leave us....you're such a strong and interesting presence on these threads.Id be quite happy if you came on and just waffled about your chickens and weird male colleagues. Yes, it may seemed to have slowed down to a tedious pace now, as that first stone flew off, but dont lose the faith. Picture yourself in 6 months with 5:2; then picture yourself in 6 months without! Btw, Flowers for the Inhuman Experiment link.

melanie thanks for the free shred tip, didnt realise it was in 20 minute chunks, sounds do-able.

Talkinpeace · 28/04/2013 15:39

Just a quick message to anybody hitting plateaus etc

I hit "target" in December
then ate FAR too much on holiday over Christmas
but lost that seven pounds again by the end of January
held steady till Easter
then are FAR too much on holiday at Easter
and lost those four pounds in three weeks

the point of this WOE is that if you are not enjoying it, stop for a couple of weeks and restart when you are ready.
because it works for maintenance as well as weight loss.

swallowedAfly · 28/04/2013 15:49

thank you peplum that's sweet. i know you're right - the 6months with or 6months without vision is a pretty clear one!

lots of cooks on here so i'm after advice - can you make risotto with normal rice? i usually use arribiata or something beginning with a that i can't remember but am out of it. have a feeling normal rice would not work the same not only as in taking longer but maybe not absorbing liquids? help!

Talkinpeace · 28/04/2013 15:55

Saf
call it a pilau or a paella and then yes you can !
but it will not go gloopy like a risotto

Emilythornesbff · 28/04/2013 16:10

meneedshoes I've just started 5:2, I'm ebf my 12 week old baby.
I can't see that it would be a problem as your body takes what's needed to make the milk. That means I should burn fat but that my milk supply isn't affected.
I have been having marmite drinks and lots of herbal tea on fasting days and I just have lentil broth for supper. CBA to think too much about additional meal planning sothe soup helps with that.
Em

Emilythornesbff · 28/04/2013 16:19

Also, if I start a fasting day and feel genuinely hungry and it's too much of a struggle I just ditch it and have healthy eating day instead.

LexingtonBear · 28/04/2013 16:38

Hi Wondering - yes, sounds like we are in a similar place. Fingers crossed for swift and healthy weight loss!

Feeling odd today - was building up for a proper eating day before trying my first 36 hour fast tomorrow. But I am just not hungry, really struggling to make myself eat. Plus, and this really is odd, I have no desire to have a glass of wine whatsoever. Believe me, this has NEVER happened before!! I'm pretty sure I'm not sickening for something - maybe my body is just resetting itself. I think I like it, but it sure is odd!

Good luck for tomorrow's fasters.

MelanieCheeks · 28/04/2013 17:14

I'm 5 foot 2. I fit into a 12 when I'm about 10-10.5 stone. I've managed to get under the 10 using 5:2, so am fitting into my size 10s again( including a cute Anna Sui tartan dress which I intend to wear at a ceili this Friday!)

Fast day tomorrow, but as usual we bought far too much food yesterday at the supermarket ( husband cannot resist those 3 for £10 deals). So I might have to work on something for dinner with him from that lot ( breaded fish at 300 caks? Or a turkey stir fry- no noodles for me?)

Hope it goes well, all you other Monday tasters Brew

MeNeedShoes · 28/04/2013 17:17

Thanks Emily really useful :) How did you find your first few fasts? Doing the 5:2 while you're EBF will probably accelerate your weight loss a lot so you can probably afford to just have 'healthy days' when you're hungry. I lost over a stone in spite of eating a lot of crap but want to start 5:2 while I am still getting some BFing help. DD is weaned so only has a few feeds from me now. Need to change my eating habits before I stop BFing or I'm going to pile the weight back on Confused

akarucker · 28/04/2013 17:19

Awww saf just chalk it up to one of those crap weeks. Have a big old glass of wine, a yummy supper, and start afresh next week. It happens!

Barbie1 · 28/04/2013 19:50

postmanspatcat the um, toilet issues belonged to me Blush thanks for sharing your experience, glad I'm not the only one to suffer. It's been a tough weekend. I'm scared to eat too much because of the problem mentioned above but I have my fast again tomorrow and I know I need to eat enough to substain myself Confused

Anyway, my fast started 5pm today and ill aim for a total 24 hour fast again. I've strangely been looking forward to it!

saf I have gone through so many ups and downs with my weight. I throw myself into something, get results and the get lazy. So many fads and diets followed. I also think there is always next week. However the 6 months analysis is a fab one, even if the scales don't move at all your health will have been improved greatly. I don't know much about all of this but if we can offer you even a little support stick with us Smile

wonderingagain · 28/04/2013 19:59

I hate to refer to the Dark Side but here is an interesting thread

www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/woman-504/lifestyle-17/723011-your-height-weight-dress-size-4.html

Emilythornesbff · 28/04/2013 20:04

meneedshoes I find the fasting both difficult and enjoyable, if that makes any sense. It's definitely easier (ok I'm only a couple of weeks in) than gazing into an abyss of lifelong calorie counting or low carbing. I do get hungry but being busy helps, as do lots of warm drinks.
It's easier for me to have my broth and a couple of pieces of fruit than it is to make "diet" versions of whatever DH and DS are eating.
Now I'm wondering which days to fast on but I sort of play it by ear.
Definitely hoping that the bf helps. I used my pregnancies as an excuse to overheat tbh and I miss my pre pregnancy clothes.
I reckon I've dropped about a stone since giving birth and I'd like to lose another (at least).

MeNeedShoes · 28/04/2013 22:18

Well, have been a bit thick tonight - ate lots of sweets we bought for my nephew's visit so will prob have mad sugar crash tomorrow Hmm I never eat sweets, don't know what possessed me - self-sabotage before I even start?! Think it will be hard to not eat in the morning now but going out with DD so that should keep me busy till lunchtime.

Thanks Emily - sounds like you're doing really well :) Will definitely keep at the arm drinks.

Good luck all fasters tomorrow :)

catsrus · 29/04/2013 01:15

Hi wondering reading other people's replies on here about weight and size 12 - it really does show that the answer is "it depends"!

I'm 5.8" and my weight is now 9.2 - 9.7lbs (the 5lb fluctuation seems to have been the norm for the last few months). At this weight I'm a steady 10 bottom, 12 top. I've always been top heavy Grin

frenchfancy · 29/04/2013 06:40

Interesting Catrus, I am now 10st 7, 5'7" and the same size as you are.

I have no idea what size I would be if I lost another stone.

catsrus · 29/04/2013 07:14

I don't exercise ff and I'm almost 60 with little muscle tone - so any of you who do exercise will have muscle mass adding to the weight of your ody but not the volume Smile
