The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

saf you've had two of the best ideas! I think I could handle the chocolate free week if I know it's allowed on Sunday. I think I'll try that. And as for the £20 gift to self at each stone! Oh yes...I'm off to the shops soon anyway, so although I've bounced up a bit today, that low of a stone two days ago counts, right!!!!

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 12:56

definitely counts Grin good for you postmanpats and tell you're dp well done from me.

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 12:56

don't think clothes should be the £20 gift though as they're necessities - should be something lovely and frivolous.

akarucker · 21/04/2013 13:05

I agree. Something you wouldn't normally buy for yourself, but something like you would buy as a nice present for a friend...hmmm, there was a lovely scarf in M&S last week that had my name on.

kikilondon · 21/04/2013 13:08

morning all! well, managed to get to midday before I broke my fast, so that was nearly 19hours without food from yesterday supper, plus a 420 cal day..

going to eat normally today, have a glass of wine but attempt another tomorrow!

feel great!

akarucker · 21/04/2013 13:24

kiki well done! Feels good to get your first one done, doesn't it? It gets even better...

Southeastdweller · 21/04/2013 13:53

Great idea saf. Like postman I also had a recent splurge at Westfield but I'm sure I can be persuaded to spend a bit more with the loss of one stone probably due very soon (1lb to go).

BsshBossh · 21/04/2013 14:18

zero calorie fasters and here's a link (already posted before) reminding us that zero calorie fasts are recommended (by one lf the Horizon scientists), failing that then 24 hr fasts:

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 14:25

interesting. it's the brain and weight effects i'm most after so looks like complete fast is best for me. am wondering if i could do what i did this friday/saturday every week. plus one 500 day i guess or just a couple of under 1000 days - whatever worked.

hmm. shall ponder.

BsshBossh · 21/04/2013 14:32

saf if you can do it then go for it. So long as you don't undereat too much across the week then you should be okay. I'm going to do 1 complete 36 hour fast a week now, also when I'm in maintenance. DH is considering it too having read that link and researched around further - for physical and brain health reasons only (he has no weight to lose). The key thing for both of us is to ensure we bump up our calories on non-fast days with nutritious, clean foods like unsalted nuts, seeds, plain live full-fat yoghurt, avocados etc.

JackieTheFart · 21/04/2013 14:33

Hi all!

I'm joining you here as I am disgusted with myself - weighed myself this morning and I weigh 7lb more than I thought. Even 7lb lower I would be in the obese category Sad

BsshBossh · 21/04/2013 14:41

Welcome Jackie. Well done for turning that disgust into positive action. Soon you'll be feeling proud :)

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 14:42

bssh getting enough calories is not a big issue for me because i still like eating so called rubbish. will see. i think it would be good if i could and i think i'd prefer a, say, 42hr complete fast weekly than 2 x 500 if i still lost weight.

postmanpatscat · 21/04/2013 15:35

I'm fasting today instead of tomorrow and not sure whether I'll eat later or not, will see if I want to! Up to 9pm would be a 24 hour fast. On a 'normal' fast day at work, I skip breakfast, eat

ceebeegeebies · 21/04/2013 15:47

Hi I started doing 5:2 on Tuesday...I did it before xmas but got a really bad kidney infection that knocked me for 6 and I completely lost motivation!

I hope you don't mind me gatecrashing here but I have a question and you all seem to know what you are doing and will probably know the answer Wink

I am fasting tomorrow but plan on going to the gym in the morning. The class I am going to is high impact aerobics and I burn at least 600 cals in the class so if I only eat 500 cals tomorrow, I will be in a negative situation with my cals...is this ok??

postmanpatscat · 21/04/2013 15:49

Welcome ceebee yes, that's fine...I usually have negative calories on one of my fast days too. I am fasting today and burned over 700 cals at the gym this morning!

Chipstick10 · 21/04/2013 15:54

swallowedafly I know exactly what you mean re clothes fitting. I got my summer clothes down from the loft on Friday. My old style of dresses look all wrong. Too big and wrong on my newish shape.
Slightly straighter fits look better now. I have a spring coat that I have not been able to wear for years and it looks great now. I am not slim enough for fitted tops though. And I don't know if I ever will be. That requires toning and yuk the thought of putting the work in is not top of my list to do. I'm also extremely hungry today. I've already eaten chocolate and a slice of lemon cake. Shame on me.

ceebeegeebies · 21/04/2013 15:59

Postman - thank you Smile am a little nervous as the 2 fasting days I have done so far were not easy and going to the gym is going to make me even hungrier!! But DH is away for 3 days so I won't get another chance till thursday and I am going out for lunch tues and wed so I have to fast tomorrow!!

cornishclara · 21/04/2013 16:42

I have been a bit of a lurker - so am posting for the first time. Totally impressed with how supportive and kind you all are.

My story - need to loose about a stone tbh; love to eat! Have managed 7lbs so far and feeling good, my fasts don't always go brilliantly- too much cake at work at the mo. Doing some excercise as well gym, walking and swimming(not all at once). Usually use miso soup on fast days and have learnt to drink loads of water which really helps. Thought I would feel faint during fast days but I don't - so that is good.

Your stories inspire me - thank you

frenchfancy · 21/04/2013 17:15

Don't forget we are all in negative calories for fast days whether we go to the gym or not, no-one has a BMR of less than 500 cals. I have a physical job, so would expect on a busy day to burn over 3000, but that doesn't stop me fasting.

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 17:19

postman you're owed one £20 treat already and getting to ultimate target weight has to be worth at least a £50 treat imo and i'm a skint single mum Grin

IDismyname · 21/04/2013 17:33

aka

I definitely have a sugar addiction - I've supposedly given it up for about 14 months, but late at night - just before bedtime - I can get the real munchies. Have been known to consume 3 or 4 mini chocolate bars before my brain has even clicked in.

Trouble is, DS and DH love chocolate and are both skinny as rakes. Theres mutiny if its not in the house.

I do now try and have very dark chocolate and its hard to binge on that.

(I know, I know B&W - we're not supposed to snack between meals :))

Chipstick10 · 21/04/2013 18:18

Just had more chocolate. Wth!

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 18:22

i've just had egg and chips for tea chipstick. i don't think i've ever made myself that in my life Grin

BsshBossh · 21/04/2013 18:24

This weekend was a seriously heavy eating weekend, but fantastic so nit feeling that guilty. Roll on a healther week and some fasts though.
