The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

angryfeet I used to eat bread every single day and sometimes twice. About 10 years ago I suddenly started to get problems (constipation/dio, indigestion, and itching down below - sorry too much info) which was diagnosed as a yeast intolerance. I now try to avoid all yeast products esp bread which I love, but if I have small amounts I'm ok for a while but if I indulge too much I start to suffer. I can have bread about once a week with no problems but find that I don't miss it too much and have replaced it with wraps.

virginposter · 20/04/2013 19:04

peplum41 A word of caution about buying new footwear. Since losing 2 stone I have gone from a size 6 to a 5.5 or sometimes 5. Anyone else noticed their feet shrinking? Grin

kikilondon · 20/04/2013 19:25

thanks for your welcoming words Smile

welll, had my stir fry for supper at 5.30pm (we were all starving after gardening all day), then went for a lovely evening walk. planning maybe an apple later on if I'm desperate, then early night to avoid temptation! though actually feel ok...in a way I find it easier eating v low calorie than being more moderate iykwim

can I ask if milk in morning coffee (splash x 1 only) would count as breaking the overnight fast? thanks

BsshBossh · 20/04/2013 19:45

virginposter yes me. Had gone down a shoe size the last time I checked and now need to check again. On the plus size I have still kept some really lovely, barely worn shoes from before my weight ballooned that I can now wear without them digging into and blistering me :)

MelanieCheeks · 20/04/2013 20:00

Hey-ho, getting ready for next Monday's fast. I've been doing this since January, and I'm delighted that my husband is keen to join me next week. Though he says he's picking what we're eating from the Hairy Dieter's book!

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 20:52

not sure if i'll do it regularly - i'm currently eating ice cream for the first time in ages so hope this doesn't bode to long fast equals stuff yourself. will see what the scales say over the next few days.

i am laughing at fat feet - my fat has never reached my feet so not something i've experienced. yay for slimmed down feet Smile

Talkinpeace · 20/04/2013 22:28

kikilondon
if milk in tea breaks a fast then I've never done a successful one!!
I did black coffee a couple of days but DH said I was far too psychotic so reverted to tea - but nothing with sugar or more fat or solids

kikilondon · 20/04/2013 22:56

oh phew talkinpeace!! feel same about my first cup of the day then can move onto green tea/hot water etc!! well, am in bed and have completed first day!! going to try and not eat till lunchtime tomorrow as had dinner about 6pm, so will be an 18-hour stretch if I manage it!

do you guys drink wine on your days off?

Talkinpeace · 20/04/2013 23:04

kiki
wine at weekends is what makes fasting worth it :-)

Breadandwine · 20/04/2013 23:20

Ive been through my wardrobe and removed all the heavy, depths of winter clothes that are ok for the charity shop. The other stuff will go to the mysterious clothes recycling guy( who sits in the dark in his shop, and just what does he want with all the tatty stuff?). Im not normally so confident that I wont be needing those clothes again, but this time I am.

Finally broke into the top elevens, so now merely overweight rather than obese!

Congratulations, Peplum feels good, eh?

bread&wine unusually quiet, have you decided to paint those rooms so that when Mrs bread returns she doesnt find out you've been milling about the place feeling all euphoric like without her.

Got it in one! I had to smile when I saw your comment this lunchtime when I came down for a cup of coffee. I've given my daughter's room one coat, and I'm standing by just in case it needs another coat tomorrow. My wife has no idea - she just thinks I'm slobbing around the house in her absence. (Well, I am doing a bit of that, but she's promised to ring before she leaves tomorrow, and it's a 2 hour journey, so the place will be spick and span by the time she returns! Smile)

42.5hrs of no food. didn't die, had plenty of energy and actually got loads done today really.
Fantastic, saf - you really do feel more energised whilst fasting. And, IME, the effects continue after the fast ends.

do you guys drink wine on your days off?

Sure do, Kiki! After all this is for life!

(I've even been known to have a small (50g) glass on my fasting days! Grin)

peplum41 · 21/04/2013 01:28

Hi all, quiet today, must be the nice weather.

Welcomekiki, well done with your first fast. I definitely likes a drink on my days off, but can't seem to handle it these days! Been enjoying becks blue, which is alcohol free and really nice. Doesn't say how many cals are in it though!

Hi Mel c, that hairy bikers book gets good mentions on the other 5:2 site. My dh isn't interested in fasting because he somehow gets away with eating what he wants, but I'm concerned he might be a tofi. Any way, be nice to have the old fella onside. Has your life changed much since you started fasting?

virginposter thanks for the shoe tip, my feet don't look fat, but how weird for them to shrink in length

bread&wine oh she will be pleased!

wildwater · 21/04/2013 06:36

Hi again. Still at my sister's, but heading north tomorrow with LL to stay with friend by the harbour's edge.

Wanting to share my 'clothes story' with you.

I began reducing the amount of (mostly older op-shop type stuff) around a year ago. Got into full-on clear-out mode a few months back when it looked like the business really was going to sell (which it did!).

Originally I was throwing out things that were too small. Then I lost weight and nearly everything becamw too big for me! An example: a favourite stetchy knit dress was once just-under-the-knee-length. Now, becaise I don't fill it out anymore, it's ankle-length! This dress actually still looks OK, but I have had to get rid of a huge amount, including sevaral very expensive bras that are now 4 sizes too big. (I have gone from a 16GG on the biggest notch to a 14DD on the smallest notch).

So now I am down to just one large suitcase of clothes etc plus one quite small wicker jamper of 'spares'. That's all the clothes I have in the world right now.

This is very exciting because it means I can now carefully select some things I really want...quality not quantitiy is what I'm going to go for this time!

Re food, all good. Fasting today. First and only meal: two slices of vogels whole-grain with a scrape of cottage cheese, a slice of ham and a salad os sprouts, capsicum and coriander. Three olives. I didn't count calories (as usual) but feel this was a pretty small amount of food.

I am looking forward to weighing myself on my doctor's scales next week. Very interested to see if I've dropped under 60kg.

No matter if not...I am feeling really good & healthy, whcih is the greatest bonus of this way of life.

Cheers to you all Smile

frenchfancy · 21/04/2013 07:14

ww Good to hear from you. I agree with you about quality clothes, but I'm using ebay as I'm not sure I'vr stopped shrinking yet.

B+W your DW is a lucky woman.

virginposter shrinking feet here too - who would have thought it.

BsshBossh · 21/04/2013 07:40

Interesting discussion with research links on the 5:2 Fast Diet Forum for those doing or interested in zero calore 36 hour fasting

Southeastdweller · 21/04/2013 08:35

Welcome kiki I recommend you doing 5:2 at first so your body and mind has chance to get used to this WOL before maybe doing 4:3.

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 08:43

morning Smile

good to hear from you ww.

bssh - thanks will read that in a minute.

well this morning (despite ben and jerry's attack last night) i'm at a new low of 10.11.4. don't know if it will last but i'm very happy with that and it makes the long fast worthwhile. i suppose my next real goal is 10st7 - i hadn't thought of it till now because i was still focussed on just staying under 11 but it now seems more attainable.

another bright day here thank goodness - imagine how easy this is all going to be if the sunshine continues!

postmanpatscat · 21/04/2013 09:07

saf hooray! 10st 7 in your sights :)

BetsyVanBell · 21/04/2013 11:06

Morning everyone, I'm almost in the land of the living again. Lost a couple of pounds through fever and not being able to eat but it's not a strategy I'd condone by any means. I haven't been completely sugar-free while ill but it's just been the odd spoon of honey in some natural yogurt and a bit of marmalade on toast here and there so I'm not going to worry about it, though I may extend my sugar-free period by another week as I would like a clear 2 weeks I think. To be honest this bug has wiped me out so much it'll probably be another week till I'm back to normal so what I really want to to do is make the effort to steer away from easy carbs and be eating a whole lot more salad and veg while I'm recovering. Hopefully I'll be up for a bit of produce shopping tomorrow.

Chipstick10 · 21/04/2013 11:25

Morning all. Hope you feel better soon Betsy.
Does anyone know why two consecutive days is not advocated in this woe?

Southeastdweller · 21/04/2013 11:31

Where did you hear or read that chips? I've been doing consecutive days for weeks with no problem Confused. I hope there's no nasty long term health implications.

akarucker · 21/04/2013 12:31

Oh dear....so, after my sugar free week, I got a bit cocky and thought I could handle a pudding. It tasted like sweet nectar but it has triggered a sweet tooth frenzy! I obviously wasn't ready. It's continued through to today, and I'm giving into it. Yikes. Fast tomorrow, and I suppose back to sugar free.

From experience, how long of staying off sweets does it take until you are able to have something like a pudding or chocolate bar, and stop at that?? One week obviously wasn't long enough. I think I've set myself back a bit by giving in.

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 12:41

aka not sure it does go away - don't know - how about making sunday sugar is allowed day and the other six not?

chips i think we've discussed it before and concluded it was about making it sustainable and comfortable again rather than anything 'wrong' with it. much like having the 500 is just to make it more doable than a complete fast.

i'm loving the sunshine and my new chickens Smile i'm in a funny inbetween stage where i don't think anyone would call me fat but i still feel podgy. slightly awkward with clothes as i want to be putting on skinny clothes and they fit but don't quite look right. however i can see that another stone and i'll be genuinely slim and hopefully no podgy bits. well as podge free as a post childbearing body can be - don't think that 'pouch' ever goes unless you were a nice elastic 20 something when you had kids rather than an already saggy 31 yo like i was.

just want to say thank you very much to everyone on the thread - without getting too gushy it has really, really helped to have the support and comradeship and i think i'd pretty much given up and begun to feel like being slim and happy in my body was something in my past. personally being fat makes me feel old - don't know if that's just me. i definitely feel more youthful and vital when i'm not carry a load of fat around with me.

obviously i'm not there yet but definitely much nearer it than i was when i started and it definitely feels possible now so thank you! Smile i think everyone is doing brilliantly and we should all find a non food related way to give ourselves a pat on the back.

swallowedAfly · 21/04/2013 12:46

just a thought - when people give up smoking or booze they tend to think of all the money they've saved. you don't tend to when you lose weight but i know in my case i will have saved loads that i haven't spent on tubs of ice-cream and bars of chocolate and god knows what else in the local corner shop in prep for evening munchies.

maybe we should all buy ourselves something? how about everyone who has lost a stone commits to buying themselves something lovely for just £20? those who are nearing a stone can use it as incentive that they will be forced to buy themselves something when they get there. sorry if i'm just turning into a gushy fluffy twat in response to two days of sunshine Grin

postmanpatscat · 21/04/2013 12:50

saf I think I pre-empted your plan a bit...I've already been to Westfield and stocked up on skinny jeans in various colours from H&M! Since DP has lost 2.5 stone since Feb 1st, we have also had to buy 5 new shirts, 4 suits and 2 pairs of jeans for him, so we are now on a shopping ban until after payday!

Lovely idea though, gush away!
