The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome back Aftereights.

Well done akarucker.

saf I'm going to do a 36 hour fast once a week now as I really found it straightforward and kept thinking about the health benefits. I felt light, alert (though a little too alert to sleep properly) and energetic. I plan on doing 6:1 as a 36 hour fast when I reach maintenance.

Itsaboatjack · 20/04/2013 08:35

Nice to see you aftereights, definitely true what you're saying about breakfast, I hardly ever eat it now and if I do it's not till practically lunchtime anyway so then I'll just end up skipping lunch instead.

Well done aka that's great.

saf I also struggle with the evening munchies. I'm tempted to try and see if I can do 36hrs. The failed fast I had this week happened after I ate, I was fine all day but when I ate in the evening it definitely turned on the hunger switch and I just kept going.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. I'm working all weekend so may not get on here again, it's our busiest day of the year tomorrow as we are very close to the finish line for the London Marathon.

AngryFeet · 20/04/2013 08:41

Something weird happened to me last night and have been trying to work out if this diet was the reason or if it was just random. So thurs was a fasting day and i just had veg and chicken. Yesterday at lunch i had a large chunk of french bread and chicken and felt bloated and horrible. Went out for tapas last night and ate too much plus was drinking diet coke. Felt very bloated and wished i hadnt eaten so much. 15 mins later i suddenly got a feeling i couldnt breath but that passed inseconds. Then i was cold and shaky with a racing heart for 3 hours. Was horribke. Any ideas?

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 09:11

bshhh i was thinking that too - one 36hr (would be more like 40 something for me as i never want breakfast even after a long fast) a week could be good maintenance. i'm also wondering if, if i could make it today and it's doable, i could do one whole day without any food followed by the next day only having the 500 in the evening as my weight loss plan rather than 2 x 500 days. will have to see how today goes as i suspect having not had a drink yesterday i'll find it even harder to resist the half bottle of wine sat in the fridge today Grin

itsaboat - yep exactly what happens with me re: not eat all day and fine then when i do eat it turns on the munchies. give it a try one day.

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 09:12

also sorry for tmi but i'm suprised i'm still having bowel movements (not great volume but my bowel clearly still has stuff to get out and is still busy) even after nearly 36hrs since eating. that is kind of spurring me on actually feeling sorry for my digestive system being so backlogged.

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 09:14

angryfeet could be a food sensitivity that is showing up more after a break from that food? was there bread again with the tapas? what i was having sometimes was food flushes - as in the day after a fast if i ate a big meal i would suddenly be roasting hot and feel like my skin was burning.

ellenbrody · 20/04/2013 09:18

angryfeet - too much caffeine from the coke?? It can have that effect on me.

AngryFeet · 20/04/2013 09:19

Yes there was bread actually. I normally eat a lot of bread. I thought i was having a panic attack at first as i felt like i was going to die. But since it went on for 3 hours i dont think it was that.

AngryFeet · 20/04/2013 09:20

Maybe ellen but again i drink diet coke daily and it has never affected me before...

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 09:21

i'd keep an eye on the bread. do you eat it on a fast day?

AngryFeet · 20/04/2013 09:23

Well i only have done 2 fast days so far and only didnt have bread on the 2nd. I will avoid today definitely! Thanks :)

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 09:37

just see. maybe the day after you next fast eat bread again and see if it repeats.

greenfig · 20/04/2013 10:47

No advice AF but sounds horrid, poor you, must have been frightening.
Have don a JM & have decided that 2lbs off each thigh, 1lb off tummy & 1/2 lb back on each boob & I'm done! Wish it worked like that Wink
Am off out into the sunshine in case this is summer.

postmanpatscat · 20/04/2013 12:21

well done saf on your 36 hours - knew you could do it! Once your head is in the right place, it seems easier to carry on not eating than eat 500 cals and then think about all the other things you'd like to eat too.

great news akarucker too - a major milestone!

Eldest DD is home from boarding school this weekend, so both girls with me, DP away and we have planned a girls' night in with Pitch Perfect on DVD, pizza, popcorn and chocolate! I'm still going to track on MFP and keep under TDEE (which is a paltry 1620) and do LOTS of exercise this weekend to minimise the damage!

Have a good weekend everyone and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 12:26

thanks postmanpats Smile i'm still going - been about 39hrs now and not hungry at all. have got loads done cleaning hen house and getting it all sorted for the hens i'm going to pick up later and actually sat outside and felt the sunshine on me Shock

i agree in some ways it is easier not to eat. i'm going to try to just have 500cals this evening though the wine may beat me yet.

peplum41 · 20/04/2013 12:29

Just a couple of feelin good about this woe events...

Seeing as the weather has improved, Ive been through my wardrobe and removed all the heavy, depths of winter clothes that are ok for the charity shop. The other stuff will go to the mysterious clothes recycling guy( who sits in the dark in his shop, and just what does he want with all the tatty stuff?). Im not normally so confident that I wont be needing those clothes again, but this time I am.

Finally broke into the top elevens, so now merely overweight rather than obese! Grin all round.

saf well done on sticking with it. Bet you're glad you did now.

poshvoice I thought you was a lady!Shock Sorry dear, hope you shift those man mammeries.

aftereights good to see your name again, Just wondering, have you lost that weight by sticking to 5:2 and being kind of relaxed about your TDEE and all that, or have you been reasonably strict most of the time, with the odd blow-out?

bread&wine unusually quiet, have you decided to paint those rooms so that when Mrs bread returns she doesnt find out you've been milling about the place feeling all euphoric likeSmile without her.

Would love to go outside, but trying to avoid the moody neighbours next door who are in the process of moving out- hurrah! Be a great weekend if I didnt have stinky old work tonight/tomorrow. Will miss the London marathon, Envy itsaboatjackbeing there at the finish! Going to treat myself to a snazzy new pair if trainers when I get down to the 10s.

sausages51 · 20/04/2013 14:34

Just reporting another pound off so 1 stone one since Jan :-) AND had throw more too big trousers out yesterday so I really really must be getting slimmer - still weigh too much but so pleased everything heading in the right direction. Oh and off to Lanzarote for a week, so it will be interesting to see what happens during a week of sun sea and San Miguel!

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 20/04/2013 14:36

peplum was very strict in the beginning but since Christmas I've been far more relaxed - I've continued to lose weight but not as fast. I'm in for the long haul so not really fussed. AND I've had plenty of blow outs.

kikilondon · 20/04/2013 16:14

Hello, can I join?

want to lose 1-1.5 stone really quickly!! daren't weigh self to start as worry it'll put me off, silly though that sounds!

am going to try 4:3, I think... so mon, wed and then either fri or sat...

doing ok today, planning veg stir fry for supper

does this honestly work?? thanks Kiki

Itsaboatjack · 20/04/2013 16:25

peplum you'll have to come down one year. My pub is a meeting point for the runners and their families for a children's charity, it is always a brilliant atmosphere, so much so that I have been inspired to run it twice, and my friend who was here supporting me last year was also so inspired she is running it this year.

akarucker · 20/04/2013 16:36

Welcome kikilondon you'll find people lose weight at different rates on this woe, but the average seems to be about a pound a week. Very few are averaging more than that, so I wouldn't go into this wanting a 'quick fix'. This is quite a long term mindset and requires some getting used to.
Most people who start it seem to love it! I do.

There's lots of info & tips at the beginning of this thread so take some time to read through and see if it's for you. Sounds like you've launched into your first fast day so hope that's going well. There's lots of support available on this thread, should you need it.

postmanpatscat · 20/04/2013 17:08

welcome kiki

My goal is 17lbs so similar to yours, I lost 15lbs of that over the last eight weeks since starting 5:2 (can't be doing with 4:3!) and this is what works best for me:

  • exercise at the gym about 3x week (I'm now running 5-6 miles each time)
  • walk as much as possible
  • 500 cals of healthy food on fast days (lunch and dinner only)
  • One fast day in four I don't eat at all, just loads of fluids
  • I track ALL my food and exercise on MFP
  • I eat what I want, up to TDEE, on non-fast days
  • My weekly deficit is usually between 4500-6000 cals.

Good luck, sounds like you're off to a good start!

PS I'm 45 by the way, so it's not like I've got my pre-children, 20-something metabolism any more!

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 17:23

broke my fast at 4.30pm with a handful of nuts and am now finally having that glass of wine. 42.5hrs of no food. didn't die, had plenty of energy and actually got loads done today really.

am sipping wine very, very slowly given my empty state. hoping not to go mental with food now. when i first ate the nuts it woke up the ravenous beast and i determined to eat nothing more for an hour and have a sip of wine or two and now the beast is sleeping again.

think i will try and have something semi healthy as my first meal. possibly fish and veg.

BsshBossh · 20/04/2013 17:55

Fantastic saf. Do you think you'll repeat it regularly now?

akarucker · 20/04/2013 18:03

Blimey saf I'm impressed. That goal is so far off my radar, it's not worth thinking about. Well done though!
