The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

greenfig you have the hardest job in the world for a faster! Much credit to you for sticking with the WOE and losing :)

peplum no not American but I've hardly ever weighed myself in my life (one reason why my weight crept up to 15 stones I guess!) so when I started last year I was on MyFitnessPal forums and all these Americans on there talk about lbs so it stuck with me.

Yup, I'd never heard about 5:2 until January - just before the book came out. It was the endless threads I kept seeing here on Mumsnet that piqued my curiosity. Kept thinking what's this new popular fad diet on MN then Grin. I'd been losing weight successfully just using MFP but was a bit bored of logging all the time and fancied a change to get the last stone or so off. Then I started researching the health benefits and was sold.

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 17:28

am just having a marmite drink as was really struggling for some reason. think even on his 4 day fast dr M had a miso soup didn't he?

Southeastdweller · 19/04/2013 17:29

Another pound off for me on a totally manageable 4:3 week. But I had the afternoon off work and took myself off to Westfield to do my bit for the economy and have eaten more than what I would do on a typical Friday. I think I got excited by the bright lights (I live in a grotty part of south east London Grin) or something. Feeling very full up and off to the gym now and may not eat anything else for the rest of the day. Glad I'm fasting tomorrow.

Enjoy your weekends everyone.

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 17:29

what is getting to me more than hunger today is that there is half a bottle of wine in the fridge and i would love to curl up on the sofa with ds and watch a film and drink it tonight. think fasting requires no alcohol in the house for me.

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 17:32

saf yes he had miso soup :)

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 17:36

no wine though?

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 17:37
greenfig · 19/04/2013 17:41

Oh dear saf ! That's the killer for me too. The problem is 1 glass leads to a second, then a few salty snacks, then I need rounds of toast or bacon sandwiches the next day Grin Miso is just not the same on a fri night though is it? I know I can't fast on a fri for that reason. Great that this woe allows this flexibility, do what works for you. fast when it works, have the wine the next day. simples Smile

akarucker · 19/04/2013 17:56

Well done saf I can see that today is v difficult for you. It's hard to make it through when you're struggling. But, evening is here, so you've almost done the day. Stay strong. No point in caving in when you've done so well today.

Itsaboatjack · 19/04/2013 17:58

Evening all.

I've not been around all week. Was feeling quite rotten with a stinky cold this week. Monday and Tuesday which are my normal fast days were a failure, I just wanted comfort food, so the no sugar thing was a bust too.

Fasted well on Wednesday and am fasting today. I've avoided most sugar since Wednesday, at least all the obvious refined ones, but I've not been overly strict with checking ingredients in sauces etc.

Now I have to try and catch up on the last 10 pages or so.

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 18:16

yes i knew it was a bad idea to fast today really greenfig and did it reluctantly and with a get out of clause of 'if i feel like it'. i feel a bit petulant today about it all. don't know why. it is definitely too soon to be hormonal so can't blame it on that Wink

6.15pm though - would be a shame to waste it now.

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 18:17

hey itsaboat - hope you're feeling better. well done on the sugar Smile

ellenbrody · 19/04/2013 20:56

I have eaten at least 600 over my TDEE today! Blush

It's ALL been sugar! (Fudge, biscuits and flapjacks).

(Sigh) it's weigh in day tommorow too, oh well.

PoshVoice · 19/04/2013 21:53

Weekly weigh in today

75.9 kg (loss of 0.4)

Bmi drops another point to 25.4. Just one kg left before I am officially 'normal weight' Smile. Weight loss is slowing down deffo but I'm cool with that.

Another new first today: I have been wearing clothes that were showing my belly and man boobs (I.e. I was too fat to wear them) before so I have returned to my weight when I bought them three years ago Grin didn't notice until I I was flipping through my wardrobe to clothes I haven't worn for three years. Grin

The belly has gone now time to start on the man boobs by starting my press up program again.

Sorry for the babbling post but I'm a happy chap today!!!!

Good luck to all todays's fasters

PoshVoice

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 22:24

really pleased for you PV Smile

nevermind ellen - it's just a day.

looks like i've managed the zero fast as haven't eaten yet and at at this time of night i'd be crazy to mess it up by eating.

Itsaboatjack · 19/04/2013 22:26

Phew. Caught up now.

Agree with you saf and greenfig on the wine. I'm glad I don't have an open bottle in the house right now.

Good work on the treadmill postman you'll be up to that 10k before you know. While you're feeling all positive you should see if there are any local runs you can sign up to.

greenfig · 19/04/2013 22:33

Yay saf

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 22:59

Well done saf :)

akarucker · 20/04/2013 06:44

Whoo hoo! Does it count if I know this is a low which will bounce up again after an eat day?...I lost my first STONE!!! I will bask in today's glory, because it will be gone tomorrow I'm sure!

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 07:00

yay aka Grin really pleased for you. you may bounce around a bit but it does count and if you keep with not having the big top up of chocolate cals on fast days it's bound to stay off and keep going down. well done.

my not eating at all yesterday (zero fast of 32hrs so far) sees me back down at 10.12.4. will keep going till at least lunchtime. wondering whether the ideal really would be to only have the 500cals today but that may be a bit much.

swallowedAfly · 20/04/2013 07:01

in some ways a total fast was easier despite my recalcitrance due to not switching the hunger on by eating. my last fast was blown when i ate in the evening and then got cravings and gave in.

Dawndonna · 20/04/2013 07:03

Indian takeaway last night. So, salad for lunch and low calorie soup for tea tonight. Not a fast day, just a take it easy day.

greenfig · 20/04/2013 07:03

Def counts aka WELL DONE YOU 1 whole stone is fab!

akarucker · 20/04/2013 07:23

Amazing what cutting out chocolate for six days can do! I still want it. Craving hasn't gone yet, but I'll keep going.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 20/04/2013 07:51

Morning all. Not been on for ages & haven't time to read thread but I'm still here.

For anyone who doesn't know me I started this WOE in August & I've lost 3&half stone. I sort of bounce for a few weeks before I lose each time. The weight loss has definitely slowed down, but I'm also doing it for the health benefits so I will carry on regardless.

I've found my body has now adjusted in that I'm not usually hungry until around lunchtime on a normal day, so I often have 2 meals a day rather than 3. I find it liberating & no longer listen to or believe the mantra 'always eat breakfast'!
