5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Me too saf. Shows us how we just snack and eat extra cals in the evenings! Warm drink, early night. Sleep well and enjoy breakfast.

Minimammoth · 04/04/2013 21:35

Sort of failed on he fast. Tomorrow. Then.

Hasywell · 04/04/2013 21:50

Hi all, am delurking to share - fast day today, after 12 weeks of doing this have lost 19lbs (I am 5ft 7in and started out at 13st 1lb) which Is amazing in itself but moreso are the comments of how 'well' I look particularly for it being the end of a term. I have even got through the whole of this very cold Spring Term without catching any of the different bugs and viruses that have been doing the rounds at both of my schools. So for me that is a huge benefit to this WOL.

I have also found it a relief to not panic after putting a couple of pounds on over an indulgent Easter weekend. They soon came off again after a fast. For the first time in a long long time I feel in control. Especially as if I don't lose on the scales I definitely notice a loss on the inches! Have also had some NSV moments this week particularly having to buy a new Gillet in small and a figure hugging phase eight dress in the sales.

For the past 5 weeks I have been fasting at least 18 - 22 hrs from the evening before, albeit drinking lots of coffee and hot water and have found this makes the fast days much easier and like many others I look forward to them rather than dread them. I tend to save my calories for one evening meal and will vary what I eat to break the fast, at the moment am 'in love' with Glorious Tuscan Chicken and Orzo soup which is only 120 calories for half a pot and really delicious and filling, I can definitely recommend!

Thank you for all the tips, hints and support offered on this thread - It does keep you going! I wanted to share my successes so far to help motivate others as well as keep my own motivation up. Most of all I think it is important to experiment and explore how this WOL works best for you and can be a sustainable option which for me it is.

Now for my camomile and spearmint tea and an early night - sleep well all Smile

BsshBossh · 04/04/2013 22:11

Terrific summary of your experience (and losses) Hasywell, thanks Thanks.

An indulgent gut busting lunch at Wahaca today and a, no doubt, greasy lunch planned tomorrow of pizza and chips (unavoidable, honest!) means I've skipped dinner and snacks tonight. Needs must.

ELR · 04/04/2013 22:15

hasywell can second the chicken and orzo soup it's lovely! Well done on the great weight loss.
Keep it up everyone the nights nearly over, roll on tomorrow......

peplum41 · 04/04/2013 22:48

Ooh lots of fresh posts. Will save reading till morning for much needed fasting incentive. Thanks all, really keeps me going.
Hey nettnett tell us about your travels round oz. We need to know about nice weather to remind us what its like. Too cold in UK and fasters are flagging.

Nettnett · 05/04/2013 05:53

Peplum, DH and I have been travelling through sunny Queensland, around 30c most days, absolutely glorious, lots of lovely fresh fish and salads, and also white wine... Am managing to stay on track by avoiding breakfast, quite easy as we tend to hit the road early, just topping up with coffee at any interesting looking spots. I'm coeliac, so am not tempted by most of the treats on offer, the consequences are too dire to contemplate!
Back home to Sydney tomorrow, back into the routine of 5:2, I'm quite looking forward to it, I have definitely been overdoing the wine, I generally only drink on weekends, but it's different when you're eating out...
Snow in April does seem a bit hard...

systemsaddict · 05/04/2013 05:56

Hello everyone, checking in after Easter. Despite a chocolate-filled Easter weekend (and guests the weekend before which meant 3 meals out) I saw a new low weight yesterday after fasting the day before. I am only losing a pound a week or so but after feeling that I was completely out of control for years after having kids, this is fine! I have even managed 2 fast days at home with the kids around (kept it to work days before this) and that has reassured me that this is possible for the long term.

frenchfancy · 05/04/2013 06:28

I feel much better today after yesterdays pout. The fast was fine, not as hard as I first thought. Hunger wasn't a problem, the problem as the cold; I was so cold all day (we have no heating where I am working at the moment - renovation job). We found some old furniture to break up an burn (not kidding) so the house was at least warm yesterday evening and is toasty this morning.

Scales are moving, but slowly. I now have 1kg to go to goal weight :)

ELR · 05/04/2013 07:32

Hi all, just jumped on the scales and happy to report another 1lb down so that's 8lbs in just under 7 weeks. Was starving last night but up now and am fine, couldn't do another fast though!! That can wait till Monday....

Good luck all fasters today, keep it up it really does work!

swallowedAfly · 05/04/2013 08:11

pleased for you ELR but i've just jumped on the scales to find they haven't budged at all after a fast! buggeration. really needed to see some reward/encouragment today as i struggled last night to keep it up.

anyho reminding myself that i'm coming towards totm and that may be at play but i can't believe i never lost a thing!

Flobbadobs · 05/04/2013 08:29

Morning all, glad I found this thread! First fast day today, should I expect to feel crappy at the end of it?
Have to weigh myself at some point today too, will have to dig the wii fit out Grin
Am aiming to lose around 2 stone, I really struggled to shift the baby weight after the birth of our third child and have many weddings and christenings to go to this year.

HugAndRoll · 05/04/2013 08:32

I've weighed this morning and I've lost 2.7lbs in a week and 1/2. Considering this also includes Easter I'm really pleased. I've also lost an inch from my waist, narrow part of waist (I'm very high waisted so measure both), hips and bum!

I've changed my weigh day to Friday as its after my 2nd fast day of the week and also gives me time to do another one if needed. This is only my second week on this woe and I'm really pleased.

ComeTalkToMe · 05/04/2013 08:43

Hayswell Wow that is really motivating, you have similar start stats to mine, 5ft 6 and 13st and I've so far lost 7lb in 5 weeks, although still a lot of bouncing about. Hope I continue to lose as you obvioulsy have.

saf It's so frustrating isn't it? I jumped on scales this am and no movement after fast yesterday but sometimes I see the result the next day oddly. I know if I keep going eventually eventually the number will drop but it is tougher without seeing regular losses.

Flobbadobs You might not feel rubbish at the edn of your first fast? I didn't I felt quite high, like I'd really achieved something. What's your plans for your 500 cals.

HugandRoll Those are great results - well done!

Miffytastic · 05/04/2013 08:45

Flobbadobs - not necessarily! But then I did find the first week or two hardest in retrospect. For me it was afternoons that were hardest

Hugandroll that's great :-)

SwalllowedaFly Pants! You have my sympathy :(

...because I've PUT ON in the last week :( I have done 2 fasts this week and ok it was Easter (did eat on the sunday!) but the weigh in before I thought I had remained the same because of it being TOTM. I've bought some new scales but I don't think I can blame them as the old ones were also electronic, on same floor and also i measured my waist yesterday and that had increased by a cm from a couple of weeks ago. I'm trying to think what I have done differently recently, less running and more chocolate I suppose ...

monster54 · 05/04/2013 08:56

New low for me today 5.5lbs in 6 weeks...so pleased.

I have been reading into asparteme and the effects on stalling weight loss? Has anyone experience with this? As in cutting it out and seeing loss move again?

I had a reassess and can't believe how much I have daily so have gone cold turkey...

mummytowillow · 05/04/2013 08:56

Hi everyone, I'm back and raring to go!

I've decided to start today, but need a few questions answered please:

I need to eat 1900 cals which seems a lot, does that sound right?

I've planned todays meals on MFP and I've still got 300 cals left. Do I have to use the rest?

I've had two poached egg's on two bread for breakfast. Is it then ok to have more bread for lunch?

Am I right in thinking I can 'spend' my calories on what I like within reason?

Thanks

monster54 · 05/04/2013 08:57

Well done on the losses everyone, and those who have stalled keep the faith!!

NurseEzzzaChapel · 05/04/2013 08:57

Miffytastic, it could still be the scales. The ones I was weighing on in China had me believing I was down to 10st8 but when I got home I had the shock of my life to see I was actually 10st13. Shock I couldn't believe how much of a difference the two sets of scales showed me, especially as there was a two week gap between weighing on the Chinese ones and my home ones so I reckon they could have been anything up to half a stone different. (Although maybe not as I seem to be losing weight really slowly since coming back to the UK)

Flobbadobs · 05/04/2013 08:59

cometalktome I've made a pan of veg soup for later on and have had a slice of toast this morning. I think I'll have to wing the fast days until I know what I'm capable of dealing with, breakfast is a must for me otherwise I feel sick but the rest of the day I will have to take one fast day at a time.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 05/04/2013 09:11

mummytowillow, 1900 kcal sounds about right for a non-fast day. I'm 5'3.5", 11st11.5 and on my sedentary weeks my TDEE is 1720 ish so if you're taller, heavier and/or more active than sedentary your body will need more calories than mine.

You don't have to eat those 300 kcal if you don't want them. Ideally this WoE will teach you to eat when you're hungry not because you're cold/tired/bored/upset/it's dinner time/etc. It's fine to average your TDEE over all of your non-fast days for the week. You might find another day you want to eat a little more than your TDEE so your not having eaten those 300 kcal may make up for that. That said, if you want to eat them, go ahead. Smile The one thing I'd avoid is trying to be 300 kcal under TDEE every non-fast day as that is a bit like being on a diet and not a good idea.

You can use your kcals on whatever food you want to, both on fast and non-fast days. We talk on these threads about foods that are not a good idea on fast days (e.g. cereal, carbs, fruit) but these are just helpful suggestions as we have found these foods make us feel more hungry but they are not banned. On non-fast days there is no problem eating those things as you have more calories to play with to feel satisfied. So if you want bread for breakfast and lunch you can do that. Like you said, anything within reason. Enjoy your non-fast days! Smile

I'm assuming today is a non-fast day, is that right? If so, it sounds like you're doing fine. Well done for having planned out your food. I'm a bit rubbish at doing that. Grin

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 05/04/2013 09:12

Came in at around 700 calories yesterday so am going to count it as a fast day especially as it was a consecutive one. Didn't get health benefits though as had eaten breakfast dcs had made me but still better than the 1500 calories I would have normally eaten :o

Good luck all fasters today

mummytowillow · 05/04/2013 09:17

Thanks Nurse, that's really helpful Smile

I weigh 13st 7 and 5' 6 so 1900 is right. I'm looking forward to seeing the results in a week.

I've read The Fast Diet and I understand why carbs csn make you hungry on fast day.

I'm going to do first fast day on Monday ..

NurseEzzzaChapel · 05/04/2013 09:19

Flobbadobs, I was like you in that not eating breakfast would cause me to feel nauseated. It used to be really bad and if I had to leave the house before my tummy woke up I'd have to carry "emergency biscuits" around with me in case my tummy said "FOOD NOW" so that I wouldn't feel sick. The first four months of this WoE I used calories on fast days for breakfast.

At around the four month mark I got brave and decided to try eliminating breakfast. I did this by pushing breakfast fifteen minutes later each day until it merged with lunch. I don't eat breakfast on fast days now and often don't bother with it on non-fast days either. I never get nauseated from morning empty tummy.

I'm not saying you have to skip breakfast. Far from it, if it helps you then keep doing what works.

I just wanted to share that this WoE has freed me from being held hostage by my own stomach so it is possible if you wanted to skip breakfast that you might be able to at some point too.

swallowedAfly · 05/04/2013 09:19

flobbadobs - thing is you believe breakfast is a must or you'll feel sick but do you know what actually happens if you let yourself feel sick? it may surprise you that it passes pretty quickly or responds just as well to a hot drink.

ezza - what do you think is different in UK? are you eating differently, less active (in warm countries i find i'm just naturally out and about more even if it feels i'm only pottering). also are you now drinking tap water - could minerals make a diff?

i'm a bit peed off but ok. have had takeaway twice over the last week plus the big easter meal so i guess i should be grateful things aren't worse than they are. will do a mini fast today.
