5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

saf go go go, you can do it!

FallingOver I work from home too. When I get restless I nip round the block for a walk or go to the gym. Are either of these options possible for you? Replacing munching with activity...

Weigh in tomorrow and a sneaky mid-week weigh in showed a 2 lb post Easter gain so I'm not holding out for a loss this week. But next week food-loving DH returns to work and DD goes to gym camp so I can resume work (from home) and all my food fasting/eating habits. Really looking forward to getting back in control of my own timetable, especially as I was only 4 lbs away from goal!

BsshBossh · 04/04/2013 15:41

*good fasting/eating habits

monster54 · 04/04/2013 15:43

Hi all,

So I'm fasting today after my crazy easter binge.

I vaguely remember someone else having this issue of looseness when going to the loo?

Is this a common side effect? I'm in week 6 of this method? Is it my body detoxing of all the rubbish I've tortured it with?

emmief77 · 04/04/2013 15:44

Can I add I don't usually feed my DC on crap like McD. a one off rare event as a special treat. My DC evn said thank you for taking them to McD. Shame now that we are home, they are killing each other, but he lets look at the positives.. at least they are arguing politely Grin

Anja1Cam · 04/04/2013 15:54

emmief77 well done on getting that far, and the McD non-event. It's hard with the kids around isn't it?! Fast day here too, and mine are just munching home made popcorn right within my reach. But so far so good. Earlier I had one cooked butterbean to test if they were done...

On a fast day I skip breakfast too, and now most days skip lunch as well to have a nice dinner on my full count. This week with the kids around I do have lunch: had a home made celery soup on Tue (64 cal) and a Cup-a-soup(59cal) today, followed each time by a sugar-free jelly portion (5cal) but at work I'd easily forget about the whole lunch thing as well.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/04/2013 15:57

emmie sounds good! No worries; I wasn't going to chastise you for the McD's trip! I took DS to one when we visited the US and he just loved the Happy Meal box, he saved it for days afterward. It's a nice treat, and if you look at the calories you could honestly do much worse elsewhere.

I know what you mean about being in the habit of breakfast. If you wanted, you could do yourself a boiled egg, or scramble one with a small amount of ham. It would be under 100 cals and should get you through for a while.

When I am critical of cereal on fast days btw, it's not because I don't like it. I love cereal, absolutely love it, to Seinfeld-eque proportions. If I were single, I would just have an entire shelf of cereal boxes and possibly eat it twice a day. Grin I just know that I can't limit myself easily with it, and I know how hard it is to keep your mind off food on fast days to begin with. And as I've been on these threads since August, I have read many people saying the same thing about cereal on fast days. So I thought I would share.

At the end of the day, though, we're all doing this in our own way. And if you are able to have 3x meals on a fast day and make it through easily, then that's what will work for you. :) I personally save my calories for one meal later in the day, because that works for me and leaves me full enough for bedtime.

Lots of tea and coffee, though!

FallingOver · 04/04/2013 16:02

Yep, BsshBosch I've been known to do a Jillian Michaels dvd when I'm getting really antsy. Just drank a big glass of water so hoping that will keep me distracted for another while. Have managed to fast for 18 hours so far (apart from 2 cups of tea)!

I just totted up what I'm having for supper on MFP - it comes to 210 calories... So, I'm going to the cinema later on - does that mean I'll be allowed have some popcorn?! It's a nice independent cinema with small stingy portions - what do you all reckon?

akarucker · 04/04/2013 16:08

I ditto the cereal comments. I was one who didn't listen, then came back with tail between legs to say you were all right. Love, love cereal, but it does set me on a bad path for the day if I have it on a fast day. So, I moved to an egg, then moved that later and later, until I can now manage without anything until about 2 or 3pm. I certainly have my cereal on eat days though, because that's what this woe allows, and that's why I love it. (Not sure how much it allows for the leftover Easter egg I've just polished off, but hey ho, fast yesterday and fast tomorrow...)

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 16:19

thank you everyone Smile

done the groomers and garden centre (lots of lovely chicks to hold and stroke) and not long been home so th at ate up hours in the end. haven't eaten anything yet so i'm on track. think i'll resort to a marmite drink soon though.

i'm actually going to sit and watch a film with ds and knit to keep my hands and head distracted next i think. will save the laundry mountain for my next fast day Wink

hanging in there - hope everyone else fasting today is doing ok. it is very cold which doesn't help.

emmief77 · 04/04/2013 16:25

greenegg and aka

You have me laugh out loud Grin - going to try boiled egg next fast day... the tail is firmly between my legs now, cos I'm feeling a bit faint even after eating the carrot soup a couple of hours ago.. maybe it is time to get busy and into the kitchen to whizz up something for dinner ...

HotPanda · 04/04/2013 16:39

Reporting a failed fast Blush but then it was a consecutive attempted.

I managed 18 hours, and then cracked and had a panini, crisps and a small pack of mini eggs. That is 643 calories right there!

Am going to the gym later as penance.

What is the best thing to do now? I have got chicken and veg planned for dinner, so that is about 300 cals, leaving me at 950 ish for the day.
I know that the fast part means I will have got my health benefits in, and finishing on 950 is still pretty low.

Next fast is Saturday. I really find it so much easier to fast at home - I should work less!

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 16:48

i find it easier to fast at work hotpanda - i'll go to work for you and you can look after my ds Wink

BsshBossh · 04/04/2013 16:53

HotPanda if you're not hungry and can last the rest of the day without food then don't gave dinner and call today a successful fast day. The rest of the family can eat as usual.

BsshBossh · 04/04/2013 16:53

have

GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/04/2013 17:07

emmie oh and one more thing: the first few fast days are tough, no joke. :) They do get a lot easier with time.

Donated my scales to charity, They were ancient 'dial-up' and I couldn't read the numbers properly without help. Will now weigh myself only at the doctor's or other peoples' houses - since I no longer have one of my own!

Last time I weighed I was 62kg (pre-5:2 weight was 83kg). Only need to drop another 2kg and I'm at what used to be my goal weight. Now I don't know - I imagine I could go to 58 and be just fine - but I am going to let my body decide for itself.

I am so busy right now packing up the house and closing down the business that it might 'decide' really fastGrin. Yesterday I fasted as usual despite a ridiculously huge amount of work to get through.

I had a very small serve of gluten-free muesli with skim milk around 9am when I started feeling giddy (stress or not enough food; I don't know). At 8.30pm I had a small piece of fish cooked in foil with zucchini, tomato & capsicum. That was it for the day. Lots of black coffee and plain soda.

I'm about to fetch some more muesli (to break my fast) and make a cup of tea. Today will be even more demanding than yesterday. Along with everything else I must do a complete stock-take this morning!

It hasn't been hard to keep my food clean. Doing 5:2 yesterday was in fact a relief because I didn't have to think about cooking.

There is still much sorting and re-packing before we leave NZ. I expect yet another massive 'letting go'. (Speaking of which, my insides are doing their own version - I don't know where it's all coming from!)

Must get into it. Thanks for being there all of you - the care & support shines through these threads SmileThanks

emmief77 · 04/04/2013 19:10

Fast day menu:

Breakfast : Oats So Simple mixed with skimmed milk
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Carrot and coriander soup
Dinner: jacket sweet potato mixed with tuna, passata, onion and brocolli

All very yummy, have not got into MFP yet..

Bramblesinafield · 04/04/2013 19:25

Soup for lunch, spicy veg casserole for tea. Pushing through now. A few weetabix minis tonight then the promise of buttered toast with marmalade for breakfast!

Dawndonna · 04/04/2013 19:35

I managed to get through until 2.30, from 10.30 last night. I had two crackerbreads (19 cals each). I've had a chicken stir fry for tea, so I'm on about 300 cals altogether. I want to try to keep it there for today because the Indian takeaway we had last night was so over indulgent that I was up at 3am feeling as though I was going to burst! I may have to do an extra fast day this week, but lots of soup helps that.

ELR · 04/04/2013 20:04

Emmie looks good but may be over about 650 I reckon but depends on the size of your potato and how big a portion of soup you had.

I have gone over today the first time in 7 weeks but only by about 50 calories.

wildwater looks like you are being kept super busy! That's a great weight loss. Where are you moving to after Nz? Bet it won't be quite as beautiful as NZ.

HugAndRoll · 04/04/2013 20:15

It was my 4th fast day today, second of the week.

Broke my fast at 1.20pm with 2 boiled eggs and 10 grapes. Had dinner of a chicken breast and salad (tomato, lettuce and cucumber). I exercised today at lunch and have been so hungry so had a small portion of popcorn and an options hot choc. Think I'm under 500 cals but I'm certainly under 600 so I'm not counting it as a fail.

ELR · 04/04/2013 20:26

I am starving! We'll not really as not long finished dinner of cod in tomato and caper sauce with asparagus and a tbsp of cous cous.
I'm due on in a few days and have that empty starving cant stop eating feeling! Does anyone else get that feeling?
Gone over by about 50 today already and im desperate to have a big fat bowl of cereal or some hot buttered toast! I will settle for a cup of tea though!! Can't wait for brekkie......

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 20:35

ELR sounds like how i feel. have managed my fast and now am in bed feeling ravenous. had some soup at 6pm to break my fast then cheesey beans with some shredded ham not long ago.

think it's a bit early for my period but i have cramps and other symptoms and yy to the empty need to scoff feeling.

must.resist.

Bramblesinafield · 04/04/2013 20:57

Push through it. I sometimes have a couple of weetabix minis later on so that I can sleep without feeling ravenous. I look forwards to my yummy breakfast the next day - but find it fills me up more than it would normally do. Warm drink?

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 21:02

thanks brambles. my head has totally gone food mad. am mentally eating all sorts then having to decide, shall i? no.

think sleep may be my best option.
