5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I've changed my mind about consecutive fasting days - last week I did two out of my three (4:3) consecutively and found it very hard. Did it again this week to make up for overindulging in pastries over the weekend and found it so much easier! The second fast was, dare I say it, easy - I felt no hunger till very late in the day and then that was controlled very fast with a cup of coffee. Happy to say that I seem to have maintained the weight I was last week (about 12.2) despite my foodie weekend (actually 4 days). I love this woe - I feel so in control of my weight for the first time ever. I love that I could eat pretty much whatever I wanted over 4 days and still be the same weight when previous to this woe I always used to joke that just looking at cakes, pastries added inches! So far I've lost just over a stone in about 8 weeks. Lots still to go, but everything feels doable!

Minimammoth · 04/04/2013 08:48

I have gone way off track, weight is still bumping along but I need to get back to my eating rhythm. Will attempt fast today, but am hungry already so may need breakfast, to get going.

Bramblesinafield · 04/04/2013 09:02

Mrning. Fast day here. Then a week away. Hope to balance up with a lot of activity!

HotPanda · 04/04/2013 09:10

Wish me luck, I am going in for a consecutive fast day!
Feeling ok atm, lets see how I do.

FallingOver · 04/04/2013 09:13

Morning all! I'm trying my second fast day this week - don't think I got t quite right the last time. So I've had a cup of roobus earl grey tea for breakfast, will have the same at lunchtime and am planning to have one smoked peppered mackerel fillet with raw spinach and some homemade beetroot and plum relish for supper. Might even throw a radish in if I'm feelin generous. That should be about 400 calories at most I reckon.

In other news, I weighed myself this morning and was down one pound!! YAY!! I realise this could all be water weight etc, but still I'm pretty happy. Just hope it keeps going in that direction Grin

mehefin · 04/04/2013 09:14

Hello quiltgirl

It is up to you how often you weigh, many different approaches on here. Some weigh daily, some weekly and some less often. I go for once a month because I like the big drop (hopefully).

Glad it is making you feel better already

Fast day here and I am trapped in the house until a courier comes to collect something for ds

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 04/04/2013 09:23

Morning lovely fasters!

Hope everyone is feeling awesome!!

I had seeded toast for breakfast this morning after my 5k and now I feel horrid and bloated. Wasn't particularly hungry but thought I should make the effort. Won't be doing that again! Tomorrow is weigh in day, and will mark 4 weeks in. So will be interesting to see what the scales say - especially as Easter happened! Grin

FallingOver · 04/04/2013 09:23

It's SO much harder to be at home, isn't it mehefin? I work mostly from home, am trying to write at the moment, and I actually think that's why my weight has crept up in the last nine months. It's so easy/tempting to take a break from whatever you're doing, wander into the kitchen, open the fridge/cupboard and see what tasty treats are there. Must have more will-power!

Bramblesinafield · 04/04/2013 09:45

I agree falling over. I do a lot of academic work and swear that my weight piled on when I did my first masters. I used to do a lot of running, but a back injury put paid to that and the weight crept on. It's easier if you're busy.

FallingOver · 04/04/2013 09:53

Yep, am looking forward to getting back to teaching next academic year, when I will probably be too busy to draw breath and will be cycling to and from work. I have wistful visions of the weight just dropping off me alternatively I will end up stuffing my face with sugary crap to keep going

Nettnett · 04/04/2013 10:11

Peplum,
Yes, thanks for remembering me, I'm still here, travelling at the moment, so doing 18-20 hour fasts in order to allow for restaurant meals and wine every night,Blush, trying to stay on track, still following the posts, loving the sense of control this WOE gives you!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/04/2013 10:28

Okay emmie let us know how you get on. :)

I agree, it's best to just get stuck in. I read about the Horizon special one day and made the next day a fast day. It doesn't take much research, just a bit of tweaking on which foods work for you etc. Good luck!

IDismyname · 04/04/2013 10:53

ELR - sorry not to get back to you. I've now done my two fasts for this week, but have just eaten 2 breakfasts this morning!

I got up to take DH to the station at 0600, and came home and went back to bed for an hour which is unheard of for me. I was so cold, hungry and tired at that point.

I got up and ate a piece of bread with a slice of ham and tomato, felt hungry half an hour later, and then ate a bowl of muesli.

At least I now feel warm, but my brain cannot work out if I'm still hungry or not!

postmanpatseasterbunny · 04/04/2013 10:53

Morning all

Good luck hotpanda

Well done salty on over a stone in 8 weeks, that's fab!

I'm done with fasting for this week having fasted on Mon and Weds and I'm the same weight I was on Monday morning! Ah well, it will go when it's ready!

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 11:02

morning all - well done on getting the fasts in postmanpat. i haven't managed any yet this week.

someone please kick me and tell me i can do it today? i need to do it so i know i still can and all is not lost when school holidays arrive.

i am 11.2 on the scales today so up a bit again but still only a pound up from 5 days of eating including easter weekend family meals and chocolate and alcohol pretty much every day.

must.fast.today.must.fast.today.must.fast.today.

my stressed about neighbour and police excuse has worn thin now.

FallingOver · 04/04/2013 11:06

swallowedAfly you CAN do it! Try to keep as busy as you can, make lots of cups of tea, generally distract yourself.

swallowedAfly · 04/04/2013 11:44

i am guzzling black coffee at the minute fallingover - thanks for the encouragement. walking the dog to the groomers later and will look round the gardening centre next door and potter whilst she gets trimmed. that'll use up a couple of hours no doubt and will mean a bit of exercise.

then i might try and force myself to do some laundry and ironing or something. one nice thing about being off of work is being able to actually have the house pretty tidy - kitchen and hall floors are actually staying clean through daily maintenance rather than steadily getting more and more covered in muddy poor prints. i'm sure there's plenty i can keep busy with around the house to distract myself and make use of my time.

need to fast because if i can't do it in the easter break what on earth would happen come summer when i have nearly 2 months off? Shock and stress and bad stuff will always come sometimes so it can't be that that stops me fasting either.

must.fast.today!

Chocupid · 04/04/2013 12:17

swallowed yes you CAN do this fast, just start and see how you go, once you have one under your belt you will feel much more in control.

I had a good week off last week, used Easter as an excuse for putting on 2lb, and was soo not motivated was thinking of quitting, but the thought that if this mindset turns into weeks, i will undo all my good work and be back at my start weight!

so did a fast on Tuesday which I really wasn't into, but I started cleaning, kept busy and forgot about food till 6pm then ate a 500cal meal so it went well, and I felt so much better psychologically.

Makes today's fast much easier knowing its my last for this week.
So come on all us fasters are with you, your not alone. Good luck!

mehefin · 04/04/2013 12:17

How are you doing swallowed?

We have made it into the afternoon. I am answering the final 3 questions in a qualification I have been working on for 15 months. If I get that finished and complete the fast I will have a cheese scone with my spicy lentil soup tonight!

No sign of the courier yet --I just know it will be 4.30

ELR · 04/04/2013 12:37

You can do it swallowed!!

Chocupid I know what you mean it would be quite easy to slip into a mind set of eating without realising and before you know it you back where you started!

I am fasting today but at home with the kids and am freezing, this weather is ridiculous!! Had a coffee, a glass of water and a ginger and lemon tea so far. Does anyone find herbal teas make them feel sick on an empty stomach?
Will brake my fast at about 2pm I think with a tuna and bean salad and some watercress soup. Then tonight we are having cod cooked in spicy tomato, pepper and caper sauce with something green and maybe a tbsp of brown rice.

Miffytastic · 04/04/2013 12:44

Hello fellow fasters! I am doing fast #2 of the week... got some new scales today and rather looking forward to getting on them tomorrow and seeing if I am any lower after doing 4 fasts but also lots of easter eating in the last 2 weeks...

SAF you CAN do it! you are tantilisngly close to the 10-stone barrier now, go for it!

longsunnydays well done :) that's great to hear. I need to up my running again but this awful weather is not helping me want to get out.

catsrus · 04/04/2013 13:18

Ah SaF yes you can do it! One day soon you'll be in my position of having to really tighten a belt to keep the size 12 skinny jeans up - bit of a clean clothes crisis this morning Blush as no clean 10s ready!

Such a lovely problem to have!

I well remember what a sceptic you were at the start - you know it works now and just needs that temporary bit of will power says she who ate SIX slices of cheese on toast last night.

I'm not in my normal office today (where fasting is a doddle) but in another city with more interesting food choices - the last two times I've worked here I was unable to resist temptation Blush so today I am working through lunch and going home early to some superglue noodles and stir fry. If I don't see the fab food places I can't be tempted!

Minimammoth · 04/04/2013 13:24

I don't think I can face a full fast today, so I am cheating and having 3 little meals which I hope won't add up to 500. Maybe tomorrow....

BumBiscuits · 04/04/2013 13:49

I ended up doing consecutive fasts this week. I broke my Monday one when I was invited out to lunch. I did Tuesday, then didn't feel hungry on Wednesday so had a fast day. I don't plan on doing consecutive fasts often but this week I wanted my fasting to be over by Thursday.

I have discovered stir fries for fast days. I can make a huge panload of stirfry that comes in at under 300 cals with prawns, beansprouts, celery, mushrooms, soy sauce, thin red chillies and coriander. I have half in the early evening and half once the kids are in bed. It would be just as easy with chicken rather than prawns.

emmief77 · 04/04/2013 14:56

greeneggs

Been eaten into town with DC, they had McDonalds for lunch, I had nothing Grin - just got home and had a bowlful my homemade carrot and coriander soup (BBC Good Food) very tasty and worth waiting for.. This is the first food I've eaten since breakfast. On way home on bus, starting to feel a bit faint, so glad all I had to do was heat the soup, or I may have been tempted to pick.

Been thinking about your approach to breakfast, it is out of habit I eat cereal.. still can't imagine not eating breakfast, but going to try boiled egg on next fast day.
