5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

emmie what's the calorie count of all that (try MyFitnessPal)? If it's over 500 cals then re-do the plan. More protein and green veg and less carbs and fruit will keep you fuller for longer but for less calories and are your best bet on fast days. You can eat whatever you want but this combination certainly will help you feel fuller.

Whitecat · 03/04/2013 20:03

Kellogs - Special K, 30g With 125ml of Semi Skimmed is 173 calories.
Carbs are low fat but high calorie. They tend not to fill you up for very long which can be a problem when we've only got 500/600 calories to juggle.

FallingOver · 03/04/2013 20:03

Hi mehefin, I think your post might have been meant for emmie

BsshBossh · 03/04/2013 20:07

FallingOver if you are new to 5:2 I'd keep it as simple as possible and just do 2 days fasting and normal eating (at your usual times) on the other days then monitor over a month how much weight you are losing. The general average on 5:2 seems to be a 1lb loss a week.

16:8 is indeed an 8 hour eating window and provides you with a 16 hour fasting opportunity. I generally do this on all my weekday non-fast days as a way to a) continue getting fasting health benefits and b) reduce the temptation to overeat. My window is 2-10pm. You can certainly do this too but you might not need to. 5:2 is enough for most people.

Try 5:2 first then see how you go.

FallingOver · 03/04/2013 20:12

Thanks BsshBossh, that's helpful. I suspected that's what 16:8 meant, but you're right - I should try the 5:2 for a while first to see if that works for me more generally.

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 20:12

Thanks for all the advice everyone Smile

My first attempt at a fast today.. only just getting started, and getting my head round it all

Will redo my plan for tomorrow, and count today as a normal day.. Bring on the green veg and protein... oh and my homemade carrot soup Smile

BsshBossh · 03/04/2013 20:15

emmie I think your soup will be just the ticket. Lots of fasters fast on soup cause it tends to feel really filling.

fallingover rather like the sound of that shakshuka and the butterbean & artichoke puree. yep the soda bread possibley blew it, but Ive had a few "over the limit" fasts, just aiming to trim it down with practise. Congratulate yourself on fasting until the evening.

My dh brought some freshly baked unsliced white bread home the other day, the white stuff is a rare sighting here because its too tasty and has that unhealthy tinge. You're right swallowed the insulin spikes make you much hungrier, been nibbly all day. Hope that neighbour thing works out ok...AngryUnfortunately, I think stress can increase production of the more negative hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin, which arent so good for the waistline. Get that meditation groove on!

Time for a Wine. What a great woe! Grin

peplum41 · 03/04/2013 20:48

emmie77, my first fast was laughably crap, I ended up having chippy chips(eight of them), mushy peas and curry sauce on salad! Went right over- but still lost weight. Wouldn't mind but visits to the chippy are also rare, and this was also down to dh, who is slim and can eat what he wants. Grr

kiwidreamer · 03/04/2013 20:56

Well my first fast day went really well yesterday, was a smidge under my 500cals with soup, corn thins, a carrot and chicken salad. Lasted til 3.15pm before first food and even spat out chocolate buttons that went into my gob before I'd even thought about it!!!!! Boiler blew on Monday night so only completed one lot of exercise so far but it was fixed this afternoon so back on the cross trainer in the morning and yaaaay for a hot shower afterwards!!!

I think Id be quite keen to fast alternate days, feel like I'd like to fast again tomorrow but couldn't cope with fasting in the weekend. Will stick with 5:2 for now I guess.

I must say I dont feel any slimmer for barely eating for a whole day but There was a lot of food consumed over Easter so I might fast 2 wks before I get on the scales :)

mehefin · 03/04/2013 21:15

Whoops FallinOver I didn't want to miss the beginning of Masterchef so I wasn't concentrating ! So much for multi-tasking!

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 21:20

peplum

Like your first fast a lot Grin

BsshBossh · 03/04/2013 21:38

Have just broken fast. Made it to 23 hours. Hurrah! Next long fast on Monday but will try and do 16:8 tomorrow and Friday.

peplum41 · 03/04/2013 21:40

emmie unfortunately that wasn't all I ate that day, just what I remember. Felt a bit of a failure at the time but far more chilled these days as I know I can do it and that there are more good than bad fasts. Not that I'm one of your more experienced fasters mind, they all seem to be busy tonight. keep us posted won't you?

mickportly you still with us? And netnet over in oz?

wildwater your life sounds way more exciting than mine and will miss your posts.

HotPanda · 03/04/2013 22:13

Somehow, I am under 500 calories. I found myself opening cupboards in the kitchen to see what I could eat, before thinking that I wasn't hungry and was just doing it for the sake of it.

quiltgirl · 03/04/2013 22:21

Hello, I've been lurking and thought I'd say hello and thanks to all the posters for your excellent advice and encouragement. I've done 2 fast days already this first week of trying, and I've found I really feel better the next morning. I'm starting to look forward to my next fast day, which I never thought would happen! How often should I weigh myself? Should I forget the scales and instead rely on my jeans and how they fit?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 03/04/2013 22:23

Fast day here. A very long one, too. :) I've made it, though. Have brushed my teeth so no temptations here.

Now I've got to finish a photo diary presentation for.. a stuffed toy the nursery sent home with DS. Hmm

emmie and anyone else just starting out: try to avoid carbs at breakfast time. It's not a low-carb diet, however, eating cereal will set you up to fail as it will spark your hunger for the day.

I'm speaking from experience but more importantly, from the experience of most posters I've seen on these threads. Every time someone comes in and says "I plan on starting the day with a Wheetabix, etc etc", people say perhaps you shouldn't, they go ahead and do it then come back here and say "okay you were right." Grin

So.. of course you can eat cereal first thing in the morning, but it will make the rest of the day very very difficult. You will not only be down quite a lot of calories from the get-go, but you will be hungry again by lunchtime.

I suggest having an egg, if you must have breakfast. Personally, I avoid food until much later in the day, but then I've been doing this since August! The first few fasts are the hardest.

A little post from me. I don't post very often but I thought I'd share my success . This week I reached my goal- 9 st 6lb. A 10lb loss. It has been slow less than 1. lb per week and I hovered around 9st 9lb for aboun't 3wks. But I didn't panic. I have done mostly 4:3 and run 5 times a week averaging btw 35 and 40 miles perweek. On my running days whilst I haven't eaten my exercise call I haven't worried if I have gone over the 500. I've got a lot faster too because I am lighter . Sorry about typos - it's all a bit funny on my phone. Good luck all.

longsunnydays · 03/04/2013 23:33

Call - cals !

virginposter · 03/04/2013 23:49

Welcome all newcomers. Just a little reminder to you all to try to read through as many threads as is possible for you, and especially read through all the links in the OP as there is a wealth of information and hints and tips which are invaluable.
All this knowledge is amazing and will help you to find your way on this woe and enable your success.
Good luck Smile from an 'oldie' who has lost 28lbs and counting Grin

frenchfancy · 04/04/2013 06:37

No motivation this morning. I'm tired due to the change of clocks, I'm cold because of the weather and the fact we've run out of wood, and I'm hungry. I'm really busy at work at the moment so no time for exercise. At least my job is physical so I am moving.

I really don't want to fast today, but I know I need to. I'm 6 months in and normally fast days are just another day, I don't think about it much, but today is going to be hard.

emmief77 · 04/04/2013 07:59

greeneggs and peplum Flowers thanks so much for your advice..

greeneggs am mindful of your advice regarding cereal, at the moment I can not imagine starting any day without breakfast.. For breakfast today I've had a sachet of Oats So Simple with skimmed milk, I'm planning today to be a fasting day and chose this because I had read on another post that oats were a friend to a faster as they are low-carb Confused

I've read through most of the threads and linked threads, but am super keen to get started. Partly because it is the Easter hols and I'm not working (term time only job Smile) and partly because my clothes don't fit anymore Blush

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 04/04/2013 08:01

Well done long

I agree with greeneggs boiled eggs are a life saver in those first few fasts.

virgin is right about trying to read tips & links.

french I found yesterday's fast really hard. Hot drinks & hot water bottle kept me going but I did it.

May try another back to back today but not sure if ill manage it as I feel a bit 'off'.

This cold is certainly not helping us, but I figure our ancestors must have managed & they didn't have central heating :o

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 04/04/2013 08:07

No fast today, dcs have got up extra early :o to make me breakfast as I found yesterday hard. Don't have the heart to tell them I was going to try another fast day today.
